Interested oboe player.......2007-05-13

It is a fine collection of oboe pieces, and I really enjoy listening to them. The only complaint I have is that the case was broken when it got here (I'm not sure if it was before it was shipped or not).

Oboe cd.......2007-01-11

This cd took a little while to be delivered (a few weeks) but it was in excellent condition. I bought it along with another oboe cd so it could be that one of them was out of stock and they waited for that so that both could be shipped at the same time (which was fine with me).

What a great CD for a Great Price.......2007-01-09

I really love the music on this CD.
I just cant stop listening to this. If you enjoy classical music. You will like this CD and if you would like a introduction to classical music than this is the CD for you.
(If you find that you dont like it, you have not spent a lot of money on it).

Good for orchestra studies.......2005-07-24

The record presents the oboe very well. Price can't be beat too. Oboe music is always enjoyable (well, that's somewhat subjective, of course, but if you like oboe, you'll like this collection).

Just a small caution: this is a study aid sort of thing. I find listening to fragments of music -- frequently very familiar music -- somewhat distressful because of this coitus interruptus sorta feeling, kind of like when in the middle of Watermusik the Dying Swan piece suddenly heaves into sight.

In other words, this is a perfect CD for teaching kids the orchestra, but if you simply want some oboe music for pleasure, then I'd recommend to pick something else; for example "The Handel Collection" (a pretty old record), by The City of London Sinfonia (cond. John Rutter), 1990 American Gramaphone Records -- it is a collection too, but not excerpts, pieces are played fully, and the performance is sometimes better. It's just one example; I have it handy so I've mentioned it, that's all. I don't like listening to excerpts, that's what I'm trying to say. But I'm not saying this CD's bad, it's very good for orchestra studies.

Oddball mix, but not without good points.......2003-12-18

On the surface this series sounds like a great idea; stick a bunch of seldom heard '80's prog-rock "hits" that normally would be extremely tough to track down in this format, onto a single disc. Who wouldn't want to hear hard to find Angel City, the Hawks and "Man Behind Meat Loaf" Jim Steinman all gathered in one easy to tote package, right? While that much may be true, it's also safe to say that few would want to hear Pia Zadora mixed in with them. Like the title says, you may have actually heard some of these on the radio, but quite a lot of it has rarely if ever seen the light outside of the cutout bins.

A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Treasures of high level!.......2005-07-15

This double album keeps for you interesting findings. Fantasy on Ukrainian themes is a magnificent musical work, expressive and deeply emotive; the Russian steppes, the Caucasian spirit, the exotic melodies. Reminds us so much to the overwhelming kaleidoscopic mind of Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov, undeniably the boldest and sophisticated composer in this genre.
Mili Balkirev 's piano Concert is extremely emotional composed by clever nuances. Michael Ponti has a percussive sound that fits appropriately.
The jewel of the crown may be this Nikolai Medtner Piano Concerto, a Russian composer that kept isolated from the musical flow in those ages. He was securely a potent source of inspiration for Alexander Scriabin. A difficult score loaded with dark poetry and elusive lyricism.
Christian Sinding is a worthy piece, and somehow is an extended Chamber work. Sinding was extremely influenced by Edvard Grieg, but there are curious involved motives.

Sinding's/Medtner's Concertos will blow you away.......2005-03-08

Purchasing this set just for Sinding's and Medtner's concertos would be worth it. Beautiful and grandiose are two words that come immediately to mind. Sinding's concerto is a piece of music that has gone largely unnoticed, but it is by far my favorite piece on the album. The beauty of the melodies and harmonies are perfectly accompanied by the technicality of the piano. Grieg and Sinding were the two big Scandinavian composers at the time, and Sinding basically got shoved out of the limelight by Grieg. Though in my opinion Sinding's piano concerto beats Grieg's hands down. Even the finale is better (and if you've ever heard Grieg's concerto, you know it's got one hell of a finale).

But the two aforementioned concertos are not the only good ones. Balakirev's and Goetz's are great in their own right. Balakirev's being more modern, and Goetz's being more traditionally romantic. The Rhapsody on Ukranian themes won't delight as much as the other songs on the album, but it is good listen as well.

To sum up, if you have never heard of Sinding's concerto in d-flat or Medtner's 3rd concerto, then you must buy this album.

Medtner Surprise.......2000-10-21

I bought this set on a whim, not being acquainted with any of the works contained therein. I had put the Medtner on as, I ashamedly admit, background music to a session of bill paying and letter writing. The 3rd Concerto caught my ear with its unique musical parlance, a kind of Rachmaninoff mixed with neo-classical influences that introduced me to Medtner's unique musical viewpoint. There is a place near the middle of the 3rd movement, when all activity ceases and the soloist begin to reflect on past materials that is other-worldly. The other concertos on the disc are interesting but at times hackneyed in their familiar tuttis and scale running. I'd highly recommend this Vox set for the Medtner and Ponti's extraordinary musicianship throughout. Listen a few times before making a judgement and perhaps the Medtner will overwhelm you as it did me. Think Rachmaninoff Third but with more restrained pathos but at times more cerebral pleasures-enjoy the adventure.

This is a great collection of classics that are wonderfully executed. A nice addition to any classical library.

Pachebel in Taco Bell.......2002-03-29

You know what would be funnier than Pachabel in the woods, or Pachabel with whale noises, or Pachabel with the sounds of the rainforest in a snowstorm on a July day with a couple camels giving birth? Pachabel in Taco Bell. I would buy that CD.

I'd just like to point out the fact that Pachebel is far and away the worst, most overrated, most boring classical piece ever written. And if it wasn't before, it has been played so much, on so many occasions, with so many stupid accompaniments (yes, this includes with whale noises) that it is now. You want a beautiful piece? I give you Barbar's Adagio for Strings. I give you Meditation from Thais. I'll even give you sentimental, sappy garbage like Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet. Just please, for the sake of good taste everywhere, put down that Pachebel CD.

A great assortment of classical masterpieces........2001-06-27

This is definitely a fabulous cd to add to one's classical collection, especially due to the fact that it contains one of the best versions of Pachelbel's well-known "Canon" in addition to some of his other works. Various historic composers of classical music are well represented here, from Bach and his Brandenburg Concerto to Antonio Vivaldi's "Autumn" from the Four Seasons. Many of the pieces are played by string instruments, such as the "Canon," which is professionally performed by a string quartet. Overall, the Baroque period of classical period tends to be the main concentration of this cd. This cd offers listeners the valuable opportunity to be introduced to classical music that has been played for centuries throughout the world.

For the last decade or so, CPO has been the only label of note to advocate the music of Paul Hindemith (1885-1963). Not only have they gone about this advocacy with great enthusiasm, they've also sought out some of Hindemith's lesser-known works. And while Volume I contains Hindemith's clear masterpieces, Volume II shines with its own gems. Most notable among the major works in this set are The Four Temperaments (1940) and the Piano Concerto (1945), both clear Romantic masterpieces and both excellently performed. Of the lesser-known works, the best are the suites from the ballets, Der Damon (1922) and Herodiade (1944). Also in Volume II are the complete cello concertos, which contain some of Hindemith's moodiest writing. The sound quality in all five discs is warm and focused with the exception of disc two, which contains somewhat muted recordings of Kammermusik No. 2 and Konzertmusik. This is a minor complaint, however. Hindemith fans will want this collection if they don't already have any of these five previously released discs. --Paul Cook

Another Great Dick Bartley CD.......2006-10-18

Some of these tunes presented here available for the first time. Bend Me Shape Me is the mono 45 way faster than the stereo mix. The In Crowd prestented in stereo from a vinyl source as the original stereo masters somehow got lost don't ask me how. More Today Than Yesterday sounds brighter and remixed as the original stereo version sounds dull and lifeless. Mirage is half mono half stereo with the backing line just a mirage in the end of the original mono version the master tape for that is nowhere to be found. Double Shot is the censored version the worst moring after instead of hangover. If you're looking for more hard to find 45 versions get this.

A.M. tunes without the static.......2003-04-09

Here in volume three of Dick Bartley's "On The Radio" series are 16 more tunes from the golden age of top-40 a.m. presented, to the extent possible, in their original as-heard-on-radio form. Some of the tracks included here exhibit only minor differences from versions found elsewhere but several are dramatically different from what we are used to finding on CD reissues. The stereo mix of "Chapel Of Love" here has backround vocals and horns missing on some other versions that have showed up on compilation CD's. The bright stereo remix of "More Today Than Yesterday" replaces the dull original stereo version usually heard. Dobie Gray's "The In Crowd" is presented in true stereo from a pristine vinyl source as the original stereo master has been lost. A few of the versions here are original mono mixes that have heretofore been supplanted by radically different stereo mixes that are all that have been available up to now - "Creeque Alley" by the Mamas and Papas and B.J. Thomas' "Hooked On A Feeling" as examples. Complementing the music is an eight-page liner notes booklet with interesting notes on what we're hearing (and in some cases, not hearing) on these tracks. For those fans who appreciate hearing the versions of these tunes as they were way back when and often with the benefit of stereo soundstage, this is worthwhile collection to add to your CD library.

Almost a perfect compilation.......2000-12-19

"The Name Game," loathed by another reviewer, was among my least favorites as well (nice R&B groove behind Ms. Ellis, though). But the one track I can live without is "Desiderata." The best that can be said about that fluff piece is that it inspired a caustic but funny response called "Deteriorata." Otherwise, this is a VERY good compliation. "Never My Love," "The 'In' Crowd," "Chapel Of Love," "Double Shot," "Hold Your Head Up," and especially the propulsive "Bend Me, Shape Me" are so stunning that any other CD versions pale by comparison. Not only does this CD contain the versions I remember listening to on Top 40 radio (and in some cases, still have as well-worn 45s), it offers a true variety of artists and styles. Recommended listening to those "boomers" out there who want to make their floor speakers or headphones happy again.

OMIT THE "NAME GAME" AND YOU HAVE A GOOD CD.......2000-09-18

I have detested the "Name Game" since I was a very little child. It is idiotic, irritating and has nothing in the world to recommend it. To this day, I can remember fleeing the sound of that stupid stinky junk. In adulthood, I find I hate it just as much as I did then and have never been able to listen to that stupid thing without it being an excercise in torture. It is one very atrocious piece.
