Emmylou Harris has a breathtaking voice--literally. Her voice is all about air. The way she breathes in before dropping a note or the way one breaks off as she comes up for air. She can sing just about anything and make it sound like her heart is breaking and the end is near. Christmas songs are another matter. The slower songs work best ("Away in a Manger," "The First Noel"). "Silent Night" takes on new life as Harris locates its tranquil center. Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Neil Young join her. --Rob O'Connor

First released in 1979, Light of the Stable has survived the passage of time and received much acclaim over the years. Updated in 2004 with three new tunes and insightful liner notes, its light now shines even brighter. A host of well-known voices and players join Harris on Christmas songs both familiar and unexpected. Among her guests are Dolly Parton, Rodney Crowell, Neil Young, Ricky Skaggs, James Burton, and Kate and Anna McGarrigle, the latter of whose lovely arrangements of the traditional "Cherry Tree Carol" and their own "Man Is an Island" are two of the bonus tracks.
Given its history and craft, Light of the Stable is more than just a seasonal collection. In many ways, it's shaped the sound of country Christmas records for the 25 years since its original release--yet the warm glow of its own artistry has never wavered. Consider it a little masterpiece. --Martin Keller
Album Description
Light of the Stable debuted in 1979, with a title track featuring backing vocals from Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton. The sublime Rodney Crowell-penned "Angel Eyes," composed specially for this album, features Rick Skaggs on mandolin and Skaggs and Willie Nelson on vocal harmony, and is just one of many highlights. This radiant acoustic masterpiece--graced throughout with the presence of stellar guests--features both contemporary and traditional gems, and is now expanded with three newly recorded songs.

At Last -A decent Christmas Album!.......2007-01-18
This is a fine album . Every track is worth listening to, and some are truly magical.Ths is a mix of traditional Christmas songs in beautiful arrangements, alongside some less well known but very fine Country Christmas tunes.Christmas alb ums simply dont get any better.
Sweet Emmy Lou..........2007-01-10
She has such a pretty voice. Maybe just a tad too "country" for me.
An Angelic Voice.......2006-03-26
As many other fans of Ms. Harris and Christmas music will attest to, it just wouldn't be Christmas without Emmylou. The sweetest voice this side of heaven, Emmylou Harris' "Light of the Stable" is so personel that it feels as if she's singing just for you. I cannot choose just one favorite amongst these tracks. Each one is an acoustical gem, from the bluegrassy "Christmas Time's A-Comin'" to "Silent Night." I must say, though, that the title track, with the most beautiful 'Hallejula's' I've ever heard, stands out just a bit above the rest.
I have been listening to this album every Christmas since it was first released and never tire of it. And I must say I love the addition and rendition of "Cherry Tree Carol" - a particular favorite of mine for years (although the other two additions are only fair - Warner and Rhino could have done a bit better, I'm sure, than these two numbers).
Buy this, and maybe a Robin Petrie Christmas CD or two (seriously - check her out... - Emmylou's and Robin's cd's sound great together!) and what a fine Christmas Eve you will have!
If it ain't broke..........2005-06-19
I really wish Emmylou had just gone and put together a whole brand new Christmas album and not tried to improve a perfect one. For me, the original issue is a 5-star classic: arrangements and sequence. I added this new one to my collection becuz I collect, no other reason.
Born is the King of Israel.......2004-12-18
This Christmas country classic has been enhanced by the addition of three tracks. Everything Emmylou touches turns to gold. She brings the same elegance and authenticity to Christmas that she always has to the varied genres her career encompassed.
The hopeful and uptempo Christmas Time's A Coming opens the album, the familiar Away In A Manger with its beautiful mandolin is straightforward but touching, whilst Angel Eyes is a sad slow ballad. Her voice really soars on The First Noel, while Little Drummer Boy gets a sensitive, graceful treatment. Perhaps it's childhood nostalgia, but her renditions of The First Noel and Star Of Bethlehem really stirred my soul.
Most of her best work has always been infused with a spiritual quality, and this is perfectly showcased on her deeply moving version of Silent Night. I was tempted to give this album only four stars since the albums Stumble Into Grace, Red Dirt Girl and Wrecking Ball have spoilt me. But I can't!
Light Of The Stable is a brilliant album that perfectly captures the moods of Christmas, with lovely instrumentation and vocals. The best of the new tracks are Cherry Tree Carol and the moving Man Is An Island, composed by the Canadian folk legends Kate and Anna McGarrigle. Once again, Emmylou provides the perfect soundtrack to Christmas. Born is the King of Israel!

A Masterpiece.......2007-06-20
Clear and crisp and played with vigor and heart. Mass call is of course Mess Call that someone spelled wrong. What worked for me is that I review four or five calls each night before bed. I hum them first and then listen to the call on the CD. The next day, I work out on the bugle until lip fatigue sets in.
Clear and simple.......2006-08-04
Single bugle calls, clear and simple-recognizable to this Navy/Marine Corps veteran. Also some army stuff if you desire that sort of thing. Quite a lot of quality stuff.

5 stars times a hundredthousand or so!.......2005-06-19
This has been in my top 3 ever since decades ago. From "Christmas Time's A-Comin'" thru the last note of "Light of the Stable" this album has my heart. Emmylou has the most sublime voice of anyone I've heard on a Christmas album. She and her fellow artists have channeled the heavenly. (Do I sound too effusive? I'm holding back.) Her "Little Drummer Boy" always moves me to tears, and "Light of the Stable" is, for me, the finest new carol written. If you're not into country-music, I say give it another try with this one. You just might become a once-a-year fan.
'Christmas Time's A-Coming'.......2004-10-25
It sure is, and this is another one of my favorite Christmas albums! What a treat, I thought I'd be listening to Emmylou Harris, not betting on Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton to boot! Their harmonies are just plain glorious! I love all the songs on this, especially "The Little Drummer Boy" and the title track, "Light of the Stable"! Recommended!!!
Beautiful Star, Sing On!.......2003-12-09
This is one of my favorite Christmas CD's, one I must hear each year. All the ten songs are fine, but my favorite is "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem." It was a song we always sang in church when I was a child in East Tennessee. I have never heard it sung anywhere else. Harris does a fantastic job of this country/bluegrass carol. If you don't know it already, you will come to love it. "Little Drummer Boy" is another great one as well. I find myself humming these songs and others all day long after hearing this CD, a sure sign that I'm sold on it.
Ms. Harris is joined by Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Doly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Sharon Hicks, Cheryl Warren and Ricky Skags who sing backup vocals on the various songs. Brian Bowers, probably the reigning autoharp virtuoso, plays on some selections too.
This CD is a reissue from an earlier LP. Ms. Harris was photographed for that album in a getup that apparently was meant to make her look like the Virgin Mary. On this CD somebody had the good taste to abandon that look. She is photographed wearing a red evening gown and looking every bit as elegant as Kathleen Battle. A wondrous improvement!
Listening to this CD is one of the true joys of Christmas.
Familiar songs sung in a timeless way.......2003-11-30
I have all these songs on a variety of other Christmas albums, including ones from Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, the Chieftains, Andy Williams, etc. The song selection here isn't risky. But it doesn't have to be. Emmylou Harris' voice is so gorgeous (the word "ethereal" comes to mind) that these familiar songs have new life and depth in them. BUY IT! THIS WILL QUICKLY BECOME A CHERISHED PART OF YOUR HOLIDAY TRADITION.
Beautiful bluegrass Christmas music.......2003-11-29
Emmylou's voice is beautiful on this CD. Her voice is relaxed, easy and floats over every note. The credits in the CD liner reads like a "Who's Who" of music. Ricky Skaggs, Brian Ahern, Emory Gordy, Jr., and Rodney Crowell are some of the listed instrumentalists on several songs. The vocals and instrumentals are just about perfect. On older records transferred to CD, I'm always concerned about audio quality. I found the sound quality to be quite acceptable. My only criticism is that this CD is only 30 minutes long. However, I'm glad that they didn't ruin a tremendous CD by slapping on a couple "bonus" tracks, just to make it longer. I recommend this CD to any bluegrass music or Emmylou Harris fan.

A Fine Example.......2006-03-29
This has many wonderful examples of Anglican Hymnody performed by a lovely parish choir. I have recommended this to many musician friends, all whom have enjoyed it thoroughly. Of particular interest is Calvin Hampton's tune St. Helena set with the text "There's a Wideness In God's Mercy." This is rarely recorded, yet is regarded as one of the finest hymn tunes of the 20th century. It's a fine example of how the tune can dramatically shape the text. Compare this to the tune "Beecher" sometime and observe the profound difference in how the text comes to life.
Beware!!!.......2004-06-24
Although the perforamnces are reasonable, the other reviewers failed to warn potential buyers that the track "Jerusalem - And did those feet in ancient time" credited to Blake and Parry only uses Parry's music. Some genius in the mid 20th century decided he could improve upon Sir William Blake's inspirational poem and replaced his words with his own puerile rubbish - that (for some bizarre reason) is the version recorded here (hence the different track names in the listing).
Excellent, excellent!.......2002-08-23
This is a marvelous CD and the hymns are elegant and sumptiously performed. A must-have CD for home or for listening to in rush hour traffic.

A truely fine collection of Episcopal/Anglican Church Hymns that have been nicely recorded by a 'fine' choir. It has been one of my favorite discs that I often replay!
