About the Artist
The Countrypolitans

The Countrypolitans streamline country rock sound is traditionally rooted, but insightful lyrics, addictive pop melodies and seamless musicianship keep the sound fresh and contemporary. The Oregonian newspaper called them a band to be reckoned with and raved that all 12 songs on their debut disc are all keepers, a rare enough feat for a first album. Lead singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist Elisabeth Ames, upright bass player and songwriter Roger Conley and lead guitarist Geoff Clarkson make up the nucleus of the group, which has been booked solid since forming in late 1997. Their disc, Tired of Drowning, has been added to Americana play lists at radio stations around the world.

Elisabeth Ames started singing and writing songs in the late 80s in San Francisco. Arriving in Portland in the early 90s, she began writing songs and performing with local musicians around town. She and Roger Conley formed The Countrypolitans as a vehicle for their shared love of roots music. As lead singer and the bands primary songwriter, Ames pays homage to country greats such as Merle Haggard and Patsy Cline while creating a contemporary sound all her own. Roger Conley got hooked on roots rock in the 80s, when bands such as the Blasters and the Paladins surfaced in his native Los Angeles. A guitarist and songwriter, he moved to Portland in 1989, hoping to form a roots-oriented band. After an unsuccessful search for an upright bass player, Conley bought his own bass fiddle and taught himself to play. Three months later, he formed the Starlight Trio, a rockabilly band, and has become one of the most sought after upright bass players in the Northwest.

Geoff Clarkson played guitar with New England rock and blues bands before moving to Oregon in 1991. Infected with the bluegrass bug, he traded his Telecaster for a mandolin. He honed his picking skills with local bluegrass outfits before The Countrypolitans lured him back to electric music. He traces his fast-picking country style to guitar greats such as Grady Martin, Don Rich and James Burton.

Steel guitarist Pete Burak also performs regularly with The Countrypolitans. He is a veteran of several Rocky Mountain region country bands. Burak began playing professionally as a teen and went on to perform with regional successes Shot Gun Annie and Billy Waldo and the Flying Grizzlies. 5 out of 5 stars Top-notch music from Portland, Oregon.......2002-01-25

I put "Tired of Drowning" in my personal top 10 albums of all time. Elisabeth Ames has a voice all her own. Excellent ensemble by great performers - Roger Conley on bass, Geoff Clarkson on guitar and Pete Burak on steel. This is an album that will continue to grow on you.

This CD became a favorite after only listen. Elisabeth has an amazing voice and her lyrics are contageous. The music makes you want to roll down the window (if your in a car, which I was) play air drums on the steering wheel and sing along. I can only hope that the next album comes quickly. This is a CD everyone check out, I recommend it to all of my friends.

5 out of 5 stars The one is CD to buy if you could only purchase one CD........1999-08-24

There are hundreds of releases each month. From this number one always tries to find that special CD,the Creme de la Creme, that jewel of a CD. Well look no further than the Countrypolitans "Tired of Drowning". If you like music to listen to or just to dance to, this Cd fills the bill. If you like to experience the joys and frustrations of life, this is the CD for you.

The group features Elizabeth Ames as the vocalist and the writer or co-writer of eleven of the twelve songs on the CD. With the music, from Walzes to two steps, Elizabeth takes us on a life journey of experiences both uplifting, sometimes down and once in a while blue. Yes folks, if this sounds like a country western formula, it is but with a rock and bluesy emphasis.

The Cd starts off with the title song, a song about trying to make a better life and if both partners aren't going to change, at least one is. "Tears'll be pouring" is a song whose topic many of us have experienced. It starts off with a decided Professor Longhair riff then proceeds along a country blues line. We meet a person, hope that it clicks, but many times this is not so. The anguish of a failed relationship is outlined in the "Lights of the Town" and it continues in "I took the Blame" to the bright two step "instant Love" a story about lust that one thought was love. Only love can make a relationship enduring. This theme is current throughout the CD. "I can't behave" and "Basic Information" both express the emotion of love lost And of course, there are the stories of attempts to try to salvage a relationship as found in "Behind the night" and "will you welcome me home."

As I said, the vocalist is Elizabeth Ames. Elizabeth has the voice, and what a voice, a mesmerizing voice with the ability to express all the emotions required by the songs on this CD. You can feel her pain, her anguish, her frustration, her elation in each and every song..

The band provides the setting musically for the song to come to life. Each instrument is offered an opportunity to expand, and that includes the voice of Eliabeth, yet each instrument is complimentary so that the whole is better than each one.

If you like music that tells stories about life with music to want to make you dance, then look no further. Just do it and purchase this CD. This, my dear friends, is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent dancing and listening music.......1999-05-20

A great, satisfying mix of songs--really great acoustic and honky tonk blend. Everyone I have listen to this CD loves it and can't believe it is their first-we will hear more form this band and Ames' sultry, timeless voice..

5 out of 5 stars Quality music from a new group........1999-03-26

I was driving around in my truck and "Basic Information" came on the radio. Halfway through the first verse I knew two things; one that I had to find out who this was and secondly that I had to crank the volume up a lot louder. It turned out to be The Countrypolitans and what that one song promised, the CD delivered. Good vocals, good songs and a band that can flat out play. I don't need a lot more. I found it impressive that the singer, Elisabeth Ames, had written all but one of the songs and that they covered a wide range. It's one thing to be able to write a good steppin' out honkytonker like "Basic Information" or "Tear'll Be Falling." It's quite another thing to be able to write about old hurts and deal with them in an intelligent adult fashion. Ms. Ames does both and does them well.I'm still having trouble believing this is a first CD by these people. The whole group sounds like they've been doing this for awhile and have gotten quite good at it.
