Since his Metropolitan Opera debut on opening night of the 1988-89 season, when American bass-baritone Jeffrey Wells joined a renowned cast including Luciano Pavarotti and Sherrill Milnes in Verdi's Il Trovatore conducted by the legendary James Levine, Wells has graced the major opera houses of the world with his magnificent voice, his towering presence and his superb musical artistry. He has performed major roles in more than seventy-five Italian, French, Russian, German and English operas at the Metropolitan as well as more than forty major opera houses around the world including Paris, Mexico City, Nice, Palermo, Toronto, Glyndebourne, San Francisco, Washington DC, Houston, Cleveland, Seattle, Miami and San Diego. Jeffrey Wells has sung more than three hundred performances with New York's Metropolitan Opera. He is a consummate performer recognized around the music world for his mastery of his art.
He has been featured in many operatic recordings and television productions including Great Performances, Live from Lincoln Center and sang the title role in the 1984 "Best Classical Recording of the Year" Grammy Award-winning production of Samuel Barber's opera Antony and Cleopatra.
For his first solo recording, Jeffrey Wells has chosen to wed his art-- and his heart. Then Sings My Soul is a joyous, diverse collection of inspirational songs -- from classical hymnody to traditional spirituals to gospel songs to contemporary expressions of faith and commitment -- that express his deeply held personal faith and testify that God is, indeed, at work in the whole of his life.
