Gentle, graceful, subtle, sweet--these aren't descriptions generally applied to the blues, but they offer a sense of Mississippi John Hurt's uniqueness and enduring legacy. Rediscovered during the 1960s folk boom after last recording in the late 1920s, Hurt cut the three albums compiled here when he was in his early 70s. His conversational phrasing sounds as natural as breathing, while his ragtime-tinged fingerpicking on acoustic guitar reveals more complexity the closer you listen. Beyond blues classics like "Candy Man" (the sly sensualist wasn't referring to lollipops), Hurt's range encompasses everything from folkish narratives ("Talking Casey," "Spike Driver Blues") to Southern spirituals ("Nearer My God to Thee," "Farther Along"). Though Hurt died in 1966, shortly after the last of these sessions, the music still sounds so fresh, you can almost hear the twinkle in his eye. --Don McLeese

His singing and guitar playing is just as good as on the early recordings.

That's how you spell chicken!

This won't be a particularly helpful review because I don't "know" music. All I can say that ever since seeing The Blues Brothers, I have enjoyed listening to blues without knowing much about it. Favorites include Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson... and John Hurt.

He had a great voice. Cool vocals + cool lyrics = really listenable music. I am so greatful to my Yahoo!Music player for introducing me to him. :)

5 out of 5 stars Classic Blues.......2006-02-28

This compilation of Mississippi John Hurt's Vanguard recordings are classics. These albums were recorded in the 60's after he was re-discovered by a music industry full swing into folk, blues, and "old timey" music. The audio quality is superb, the songs are timeless, and the voice is amazing. A must have for any serious blues fan. Robert Johnson is not the end all, be all of delta blues. Check out Mississippi John Hurt.

5 out of 5 stars A review and a question.......2005-12-27

First my review:

The recorded legacy of MJH falls into roughly five categories.

(1) his early 1928 recordings on the OKEH label which comprise around 20 tracks. Although they are quite listenable and of historical interest and importance they are not the most enjoyable of his recordings. (2) recordings from 1963 that are available on the Rounder label. The sound quality of these recordings is somewhat disappointing. For that reason alone I don't listen to them much except for the fact that they were heavily relied upon by people who transcribed his songs for instructional materials. (3) The Library of Congress recordings (also from 1963). These are perhaps the best. The sound quality is excellent and there is an informality to the sessions which makes it like having MJH as a house guest for the weekend determined to play you every song he knows. (4) The (these) Vanguard Recordings, which I think were recorded between 1967 and 1969. These rival and sometimes surpass the Library of Congress Recordings as far as the material goes. There is also a palpable sadness as you can detect a man near the end of his life aware of the fact that he may very well be making his final recordings. The audio engineers did a terrible job at Vanguard for a good deal of these recordings. How can you screw up recording just one guy with a guitar? If you try hard enough you can set the levels WAY off. That is how. (5) there is also a Live MJH CD from Vanguard. It's sound quality is pretty good and it is endearing to hear MJH talk to an audience, but I find it less compelling material wise than the studio recordings.

Listening to MJH makes you want to piick up the guitar and learn to play like him. The good thing about this is that if you really want to you probably can. Many of his songs have been transcribed and broken down in intructional books and DVDs. After going through a "beginning fingerpicking" DVD by Stefan Grossman you are probably ready to take on MJH.

Go for it!

And now for my question:

It's not obvious to me from the Vanguard website whether the boxed set is actually a newer digital remaster than the original digital re-masters from the mid 80s. As far as digital remasters go those ones were a bit of a disaster. When you put the disc into your player you would have to crank the volume on your stereo. As you might expect, the careless lack of attention to levels setting in the remastering process resulted in a mushy sounding guitar. I seem to remember that was also a problem with the vinyl Vanguard LPs, particularly the first one. Hopefully these CDs really are *new* remasters because most CDs re-mastered these days are remastered quite well.

My music management software for encoding MP3s has the capability of looking up CDs in an online database. Whenever I present it with copies of the old mid 1980s vanguard CDs it recognizes them as possibly being from the boxed set, so I hesitate to spring for the "new remasters" without really knowing if they are indeed recently remastered. Perhaps someone else could clear this up.

5 out of 5 stars John Hurt recordings should be a Schedule One drug.......2005-07-08

John Hurt is without a doubt my favorite bluesman. His guitar work is seamless. If you'd like to buy some blues for easier listening, get these. Blues is to often absrasive, but all of that disolves in Hurt's world. This music is terminally infectious, and will most certainly carry me to my grave.

Mississippi John Hurt recorded 13 country-blues songs for the Okeh Electric Records company in 1928. Then he vanished. Actually, he never went anywhere. Indeed, he never strayed from his hometown of Avalon, Mississippi. He simply put the guitar down. It was the Great Depression, times were tough, money was scarce, and he needed to work. Nearly 30 years later, a blues enthusiast tracked him down, took him back to Washington, D.C., and suddenly Mississippi John's musical career resumed as quickly as it had finished. He recorded again, but these first songs from the late 1920s--with John's melancholy voice and hypnotic guitar playing at its most inspired--are his greatest musical accomplishments. --Percy Keegan

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The real thing.......2007-03-22

Fabulous singing, guitar playing that must have had a great influence on Jerry Garcias acoustic stuff. And wonderful songs.

5 out of 5 stars Mellifluous early blues recordings!.......2006-09-04

Mississippi John Hurt recorded only 13 songs before returning to a life of obscurity and hard work on a farm. Of these 13 songs recorded in 1928, 11 were penned by John Hurt with the other two being traditional spiritual numbers ("Blessed be the name" and "Praying on the old camp ground"). The recording quality of these Okeh recordings is simply fantastic, and have the best recording quality I have heard from this era. A little hiss is heard (very little) and not much else.

As to the recordings themselves, they are probably the sweetest sounding, most mellifluous early delta/country blues I have ever heard. John Hurt may not have had the well-known name of a Robert Johnson or Son House, but these recordings have had their influence in their own way. The song Stack O' Lee penned by Hurt became an R&B hit in 1950 (as Stack-A-Lee) for New Orleans pianist Archibald, and also became a rock-and-roll hit in 1958 for Lloyd Price (as Stagger Lee).

It should be noted that after Hurt recorded these songs, he went back to work in his hometown of Avalon, MS. Because this was an out-of the-way town, few passed through it, and because of this Hurt was influenced by few outside artists of the day. What we wind up with on this album is the heart and soul of John Hurt.......and it is magnificent.

If you like to hear Mississippi John Hurt, this is a very good
group of early music he sang. I like it very much, and I bought it as a gift for a family member never thinking I would get "hooked" on him as much as the family member was. This open my eyes to some wonderful music. I'm glad I bought for someone else and got to listen to it myself.

5 out of 5 stars sweet sweet blues.......2006-03-08

This is simply the smoothest blues i've ever heard. His incredibly fluid and smooth playing style is like a steady flow of water. Im also amazed at how one man could create such a sound with a guitar and sing at the same time. This music is also incredibly happy sounding for blues, the lyrics are rather sad, but the pretty way he sings them makes it very sweet sounding. This music reminds me less of the old delta blues (even though thats what it is) but sounds more like music from the hills, almost as if there is a folky feel to it. This is definately a great addition to anybodies blues collection, and i thoroughly suggest anybody who is interested in the blues to check this out.

5 out of 5 stars Dark, powerful, and awesome........2007-05-30

With only their first album, Hurt have proven to be a tremendously talented band, with tons of potential. And, like many talented bands, classifying them is very difficult. One might refer to them as grunge, alternative, numetal, maybe even progressive metal, but the truth is that they have a sound that is very much their own (I personally hate terms like "numetal" and "post grunge", especially when applied to bands that are actually good). Frontman J. Loren, who is a classically trained violinist well-versed in Stravinsky, brings a very stylish and unique approach to the band's sound, which I might clumsily describe as a blend of Tool, the Cure, and tastefully done (read: not cheesy) classical elements. Not to mention that Loren also has a very distinctive, emotionally powerful, and downright awesome voice.

The great thing about this album is its dynamics. This is the kind of thing that, with a lesser band, might become boring and monotonous, but these guys are tremendous songwriters who really know how to keep a song interesting. The whole album is full of subtle, intricate layers, brilliant rise and fall, and killer atmospheres. Chief among those are the mesmerizing ballad "Falls Apart", the hugely epic "Overdose" (which could almost pass as an outtake from "Disintegration"), and the more vicious "Rapture" and "Forever". The two acoustic tracks, "Cold Inside" and "Danse Russe", are fantastic as well, especially the latter, with its warm folky intonations and beautiful classical guitar outro. "Dirty" is consummate melodic rock with a powerful chorus, and "Shallow" and "House Carpenter" are excellent openers and closers, respectively.

The musicianship is uniformly great, as is the interplay between the musicians, and the way that they perfectly complement Loren's vocals. The music is complex and sophisticated, but never ostentatious. The lyrics are both intelligent and emotional, without ever being crude or over the top. Stylistically, they have a sound that is familiar, but never derivative. And, the violins are super cool too. And once again, Loren's vocals are awesome.

Simply put, this is a perfect debut. I can't wait to hear what this band will do next.

2 out of 5 stars Like "The Fray"?.......2007-05-30

I'm not quite sure as to what most of the other reviewers are hearing, but it's certainly not the same thing as I am. This debut album has moments of quality music in each song, the only problem is a lack of mastery of completing an entire song. After the first few chords of most songs you can predict how they'll go. Whispered voice followed by a heavy beat and a shout or two is the usual mixture found in most tracks. There is no newly broken ground here, more like a heavy retread of more of the later bands of the past 2 or 3 years. I ask if you like The Fray, because this band sounds like a heavier, but just an uninspired, version of that band. And I believe that the term "uninspired" best describes this band, as it's easy to pick up a guitar and play a song, though it's something entirely different to believe the music that you're strumming out. This band doesn't, if you're looking for a heavy band that breaks some new ground check out WolfMother, if you say they are too "mainstream" check out Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Both of those bands are everything this band is not.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-05-06

I don't care if they sound like any other band or not. I don't care if they make another CD after this or not. I bought this CD after listening to samples because Amazon recommended it. Don't think about it just listen to it and it is a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars These F**KERS DON'T SOUND LIKE ANYONE ELSE!.......2007-03-14

The song Rapture is amazing pure and simple. To be honest, I would've been happy with a cd that just branched out a little from that general style but I got something much more different than what I expected. The cd generally is a couple notches down from Rapture (in terms of energy and heaviness). Instead of a hard rock cd I got a very atmospheric/gothic/rock/alternative/post-grunge offering. Maybe it's all the violins and strings on the track and the generally dissonant sound of the guitars with his bleak sounding vocals but man does this music have one hell of a personality. The cd as a whole is softer than Rapture and all the songs are different here. Same moody atmospheric style but with enough variations for you not to get bored.
Best tracks are; Shallow (Mellow to energetic in the chorus, a good blend of heaviness from Rapture and softness from the other tracks, perfectly balanced), Rapture (Hard and atmospheric, great and amazing lyrics), Falls Apart (The bell tolling in the background with the simple acoustic guitar and techo touches just fits perfectly, oh my God! It really just makes you feel a man sitting by himself in a winter season outside an old church or something with leaves falling around him. Great track!) Unkind (a little more energetic and rocks a little harder than the rest of the album. Has a quicker pace), Danse Russe (Awesome softer moment that's a real treat to listen to), and House Carpenter (this track is so raw with emotion. Wow, it doesn't even need words). The cd has to be listened to closely. Again this cd is so much more about emotion and connection to the music than latching on to a hook. The lyrics and music are incredible!

5 out of 5 stars Seriously the best CD I've listened to in what seems like forever..........2007-01-25

I'm an old school metal/nu metal/alt metal fanatic personally, been listening to rock since I was born. If you like what I like (SoaD, Nirvana, Metallica, Disturbed, Tool, APC, Fear Factory, NIN, Static-X, Zombie, STP, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, Faith No More, Alice in Chains, Stabbing Westward, Soil, Smashing Pumpkins, Live, STP, Bush, and many, many, many others) then DO NOT MISS THIS CD!!! Ignore all other reviews and trust your instinct, these guys rock. Plain and simple.

In hip-hop, respect is like currency, and by the mid-'90s MC Hammer was as bereft of props as he was of cash. But there was a short period in the early '90s when every clock in the land read "Hammer time," and truth be told, he was the artist who introduced a lot of kids to hip-hop and its many possibilities. The driving force behind Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em, of course, is the irrepressible single "U Can't Touch This," built on the central riff from Rick James's immortal "Super Freak." Hammer also scored with album cuts "Here Comes the Hammer," "Have You Seen Her," and "Pray," but after that, it was a short trip from Benzes to VH1's Behind the Music. --Daniel Durchholz

3 out of 5 stars brings me back.......2007-02-21

I first listened to this album when I was about 6 years old (yes Hammer keeps it clean), probably around 1991 or so, and listening to the songs now really brings on powerful feelings of nostalgia. Of course I thought "U Can't Touch This" and "Here Comes the Hammer" were awesome back then, but I have found that the songs that have really stood the test of time are his more inspirational ones. They don't suffer from the outdated feeling you get with many of his oldschool style tracks. Hammer can really put a sense of inspiration and energy into his music that no other rapper has ever been able to do, and this is coming from someone who has heard a LOT of rap, from hardcore gangsta to soft R&B. I turn to some of Hammer's songs when I want something truly relaxing, taking me back to simpler times in an almost trancelike state. Favorites of mine, in order, are: "Have You Seen Her" (I actually prefer this version to the Chi-Lite original, mainly because of the lyrics, bassline, and hip-hop sounds. This song was beautifully done), "On Your Face" (an absolute gem), "Help the Children," and "Pray." These are the timeless classics I think he shines in, and although he is a great dancer, I think this is the type of music he was meant to create and would excel in today. If you like these sort of songs, I think the album is worth the money. I think rappers today should study Hammer's work so they can learn to sound cool without all the violence and profanity. Don't get me wrong... I enjoy hardcore music, but there is just no variety these days... I still like Hammer's style btw (not the parachute pants dancer, but the clean-cut business looks)

3 out of 5 stars Every rich rapper and rap executive owes their life to Mr. Stanley Burrell aka MC Hammer.......2006-12-20

It makes me sick to think that these so called hiphop purist dissed Hammer for going commercial in the early 90's. Everybody dissed Hammer from 3rd Bass to Tribe Called Quest to Ice Cube. Yeah, Mr. "Are We There Yet" Ice Cube. Hammer was not the best lyricist but he was and still is one of the best entertainers hiphop ever had. These dudes dissed and tore down Hammer then went even further commercial than he did, with less integrity. Every rapper that has commercials, cartoons, label deals, merchandise all got it from Hammer because he did it first. The guys that break ground first are always the one that pay the price for everything that comes after it.

I can't front. Hammer did sellout some on "Don't Hurt'em" but compared to rap artists of today, he still had respect for himself and his people. He really put his whole hood on the payroll and he never sold garbage and self destructive images to his people. Now that's gangsta!

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2006-10-22

I love this album but what I want to know is does anyone remember the artist hammer had named B.Angie B. If you let me know please.

4 out of 5 stars Over the years, I have observed some pure idiocy in hip hop........2006-09-19

The biggest idiocy is the belief that MC Hammer was a lame rapper who damaged Rap and its credibility.

It is because of MC Hammer that rappers are living in multi-million dollar mansions and driving around in Bentleys while their fans ride the bus. MC Hammer made Rap mainstream and acceptable. And it's this acceptability that has provided grand profit for all those involved--whether it be rappers or those behind the scene. You can preach about selling out, but the fact remains, if it weren't for making mainstream music, there would be no wealth attached.

Hammer was criticized for making rap accessible. He was criticized for making Pop Rap. He was criticized for doing commercials. He was criticized for dancing. He was criticized for keeping his music clean from vulgarity and misogyny. He was criticized for actually wanting to make a good living doing what he was doing. He was criticized for wanting to make Rap fun. He was criticized for starting a clothing line. He was critcized for acting. And he was criticized for not making white people fear him. Now, every single rapper has done at least some of these things, and nobody is saying anything.

But I guess the thing that angers me most is the continuous picking by people who think rappers should adhere to stupid rules about what it means to have street cred. No other genre of music is subjected to so much illogical and lame brained "unwritten rules" about how to behave in order to be accepted.

Rappers should be thanking MC Hammer, not criticizing him. He made Rap fun and enjoyable; and he is one of the only rappers I have genuine respect for. Please Hammer, Don't Hurt Em provided some great rap music. Period!

They keep repackaging Timi Yuro, who has always been under-recognized. This is probably the best collection of her best recordings, although you will still need a couple of her other CD's. Timi Yuro was an amazingly talented lady.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Talent.......2007-04-17

What happened to the art of singing? To find the really good good singers you need to take a trip to the past. Timi Yuro is no exception. Her voice is one of the most powerful and soulful voices ever. This cd is a must for any fan of 60's soul and ballad singing. This little lady packs a punch. Just listen to her title song "HURT" and you will really be touched by the emotions in her voice.

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE TALENT STANDS THE TEST OF TIME!!!.......2007-03-14

I PREFER "18 HEARTBREAKING SONGS" AND THIS CD. WONDERFUL SONGS THAT WILL CARRY YOU AND LIFT YOU.
THE "VOICE THAT GOT AWAY" CD IS NOT WORTH THE $$$. I WOULD START WITH "18 HEARTBREAKING SONGS" AND "HURT: THE BEST OF TIMI YURO" AND BRANCH OUT FROM THERE. I SAW TIMI IN LAS VEGAS WHEN I WAS IN THE AIR FORCE AT NELLIS AFB. SHE DIED IN 2004 OF THROAT CANCER.

5 out of 5 stars The Little Lady with the Big Voice.......2006-01-24

It's a shame that maybe a dozen or so individuals will stumble upon these reviews of Miss Timi Yuro and attempt to understand what a talent she was. I'd love to climb the musical mountain and shout her praises to the masses. In my opinion, she represents one of the all time great female singers to emerge in the sixties decade. That's a remarkable feat in itself. Timi's talent as a vocalist and song stylist are truly unique. Not only did she have a rich soulful voice but also the ability to interpret the song within her own style. This talent is extremely rare. A couple of examples of other vocalists who could put there imprint on a song, Sinatra, Nina Simone, come to mind.
Timi's success didn't happen overnight but that story will have to be reserved for another time. Suffice to say, that Timi, with her magnificant talent, had the good fortune to be produced by the legend Clyde Otis and have her arrangements built by the one and only Belford Hendricks. These three together in the studio made musical magic that would last a lifetime. Next were the song selections, many penned by Clyde Otis. However, it's interesting to note that selections also included numbers penned by young Willie Nelson and Burt Bacharach. I like to think that Timi recognized their talent early on. It's also interesting to ponder what would have happened if Burt worked with Timi instead of Dianne Warwick during his musical heyday. Also her interpretation of the old chestnuts, Smile and Let Me Call You Sweatheart. These were songs being sung by barbershop quartets but Timi made them her own and added a soulful touch. What happened?? How could a star shine so brightly and with so much promise practically disappear, after only a few years, behind the clouds? Timi with her dedication, energy, hard work and talent should have been a major headliner for years but sadly this wasn't the case. One of the reasons were the times. Female pop singers were literally "chewed up and spit out" by the business. Talented singers were grouped together with the "one hit wonders " and soon forgotten by the general public. No one seriously thought female pop singer, for the most part, were capable of an extended career. During the late fifties and early sixties public visibility was challanging. There were very limited public venues. Some isolated TV spot work,if you were extremely lucky, possibly Dick Clark, Ed Sullivan, etc. Musical venues were just as restrictive. Many really talented artists were tossed into rock and roll package tours with at best ten minutes on the stage shared with a dozen or more acts.It was more akin to a circus performance then a musical concert. the other alternative was night club work. Unfortunately, the club attendees were mostly in their 40s,50s and up, who'd grown up listening to big band and standards singers. A talent like Timi's was rarely appreciated on a consistent basis. Although I don't know, I suspect she was probably represented by less then enlightened management. I find it hard to believe that any talented management, given Timi's work ethic and talent, could not have sustained a headlining career. Sadly, by the late sixties Timi mostly worked the golden oldies package tour. She never really received another major break, although there were periodic rays of sunshine mostly in Europe. To soon major health problems surfaced which, although she fought bravely, finally took the ultimate toll.
All that's left is her music and the thought of what might have been for someone as talanted as she. My ongoing hope is that one of her classics will find it's way onto a successful movie soundtrack and her stylings will receive the wide audience this body of work deserves. It happened to the late Johnny Hartman(a long neglected jazz stylist)when Clint Eastwood inserted his material into the "Bridge " soundtrack. Until then, consider yourself fortunate that you somehow came accross Timi's work. Now purchase the CD and enjoy the songs for a lifetime.

Timi Yuro was the best torch song singer of her era. Her music will live on forever. When she sings "Hurt" her voice tuggs at your heart strings....

2 out of 5 stars WHY ARE YOU REMIXING "HURT"?.......2007-04-04

That is the question I wondered when I saw this in the store! With the punch "Ain't No Other Man" packed and it to not make it out on a US released cd single but yet "Hurt" is a mystery!

"Hurt" is a heart-felt sad ballad full of grief and regret - hardly something to go dancing over. I suppose if the remixes possibly could retain the intensity of the sadness contained in the lyrics of this song, they could give creedance to the 80's new wave song "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes"! I heard one version playing and it did not work, it was just a remix for the sake of being such, and with so much other material available that lends itself well to a remix, "Hurt" should have not been messed with as it becomes lost in the shuffle and will hardly be a memorable remix. Now having said that regarding making this song into a dance version, there is a remix that works somewhat - thus earning this single a 2-star rating; It is a chill-out version with is still in ballad form but with more ambient flair. The feel is still intact to an extent but it can not match the original in conveying the heart-wrenching lyrics' song of grief over losing someone over foolishness. Perhaps the most tear-jerking part of this song is the bridge and chorus but in the chill-out version that quality is diminshed.

Perhaps a "double A-side" cd single with the original, the chill-out remix
and the remixes for "Ain't No Other Man" would have been a better deal thus giving us the remixes to a highly energetic song with "remix" written all over it.

5 out of 5 stars Great remixes!!!.......2007-04-01

Fabuloso maxi single de Christina Aguilera, Hurt es una cancion que me extremecio desde el primer momento que la escuche los remixes recuerdan bastante a su otro single Beautiful pero para quien le gusten no sera defraudado por la diva.

4 out of 5 stars still WOW!.......2007-01-30

I love this song & Christina has just an incredible voice. I was disappointed that the original radio version was not on this single (ALL remixes), but you still get so much range from Christina that you have to love it anyway. This is right up there with "Beautiful" & Christina will continue to shine. Peace & love. Tonya S.

5 out of 5 stars A Folk Blues Masterpiece.......2004-07-04

Simply put, this recording by Mississppi John Hurt is a folk blues masterpiece. Some of the finest country blues, ballads, spirituals and dance tunes from the rural south are represented here. What makes them special, however, is Hurt's brilliant guitar work and hushed, emotional, vocal style. If your not hooked after "Richland Women Blues" there's truly a hole in your soul.

5 out of 5 stars Folk-Blues Hero at His Best.......2001-11-28

I originally bought this album in 1970 and it simply remains one of my all time best of John Hurt. Can't wait to replace my old scratched vinyl. The quality of recordings are excellent and the material is first shelf product. If your going to feel the hurt, then "The Immortal Mississippi John Hurt" is a must to buy.

3 out of 5 stars Kurt Vonnegut?.......2006-04-22

Kurt Vonnegut references in the album title, which is a line from his book "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater", and the first track title is a mix of his books "Welcome to the Monkey House" and "Slaughterhouse-Five", all good reads.

Have a great day everyone :)

5 out of 5 stars Locked inside your cage where all your world's a stage.......2006-03-25

Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt was far from an instant hit with me. In fact, I was close to not even liking it. My problem was that I heard Better Left Unsaid before actually buying this so I halfway expected each song to be like that or in that same vein of it. Each song is significantly different from the next however, breaking up any sort of monotony that might begin to form.

Lily Holbrook is one of those artists that makes music that either clicks with you or it doesn't. At times this CD is positively mainstream yet at others it's no wonder why she hasn't made it big. When In Rome is probably one of Lily's more mainstream-ready songs, it just so happens that it's her worst effort on this CD though (it's not bad, it just doesn't 'fit' with the rest of the album). Make Them Wonder is one of those songs that is no doubt catchy, but just wouldn't fit with your other well-known musicians. The distorted vocals are used perfectly though.

For me, this is just good, solid, easy listening music. This is one of those CDs where when your life is at its most hectic, you can play this and you'll be at peace. Lily's voice plays a huge part in that effect. While some may say it's not very inventive, I say that her voice, plain and simple, is gorgeous. As for the music, it's not your average acoustic guitar and drums. With this CD it feels like they took their time creating a certain melody to go with a certain lyric. Let's put it this way, there's not a boring part in this CD.

It was a very ballsy move of Lily to put a cover of a classic Ozzy song on here. For my money, Lily does the song even better than Ozzy did, incorporating a sort of female touch to it.

My favorite songs are Welcome To The Slaughterhouse, Better Left Unsaid, Bleed, Mermaid, and Mama, I'm Coming Home. By no means is this a CD anyone could put on and love, I believe that only certain people will like this CD. Don't let my saying that scare you off though, this CD was well worth every penny and I adore all ten songs included. It is a must to go in with an open mind though, if you don't and you end up not liking it, well, that's nothing but a shame.

5 out of 5 stars Lily Holbrook is truly Amazing.......2006-02-24

Lily has a amazingly beautiful voice . All the tracks on Everything was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt have thoughtful lyrics and haunting melodies. My favorite is the spunky "When in Rome". I recommend that you Run, do not walk, to your nearest store and get this alblum. It will brighten up your day, lighten your heart, and mezmerize your soul. Its just brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars finally something unique.......2006-02-06

I initially checked out Lily Holbrook because of comparisons to Tori Amos. And while I can definately see that Lily has been influenced by Tori(not a bad thing in my book!) I still think she has her own unique style. Its refreshing to hear someone who writes songs that have real meaning. Songs about ex-boyfriends and love gone wrong are a dime a dozen. This album covers everything from war to plastic surgery to fairies and mermaids. It also has a really cool cover of Ozzy's "Mama I'm Coming Home". All in all, a very worthy purchase!

4 out of 5 stars she's good, but sadly didn't make it to my "favorites".......2006-02-05

When I heard her Welcome to Slaughterhouse, I fell so completely in love with it I just had to get the whole album. But when I got it, I found I pretty much only love that song, the other ones just didn't capture me as much.

I've got NO problem whatsoever with her voice, truthfully I love unique voices instead of those copying after one another pop artists voices. But alot of her songs just aren't deep enough, didn't have enough dynamic to make me love her. This is honest, and believe me I've given her a fair chance. At times I just couldn't listening on to some of her songs, they just repeates too much without really making the lines truly shine.

I think if Lily work on it, she can produce great things; if she can write songs like Welcome to Slaughterhouse, I have confident that she can make it really big.

No musician ever applied a gentler touch to songs of murder, sex, and salvation than Mississippi John Hurt. The country bluesman enjoyed a career revival through the folk festival boom of the early 1960s, and his influence continues to ripple, as this varied and vital tribute attests. Produced by Peter Case (who teams with Dave Alvin on "Monday Morning Blues"), the album's renewal of classic Hurt extends from the deadpan double entendres of "Candy Man" delivered by Steve Earle and son Justin to Taj Mahal's trademark lilt on "My Creole Belle" to a surprisingly straightforward "Stagolee" by Beck. Amid a roster of luminaries ranging from fingerpicking acolytes Chris Smither and Bill Morrissey to Ben Harper, John Hiatt, Lucinda Williams, and Gillian Welch, the most radically disarming interpretation comes from Victoria Williams. Her breathless "Since I've Laid My Burden Down" sounds like a preschooler on helium, yet somehow taps into the subconscious of the song. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The rare great tribute album.......2006-08-24

Tribute albums can get pretty dire, but this disc is a great exception. Credit goes to musicologist/producer Peter Case for assembling a fantastic group of performers whose takes on these songs effectively bridge and transcend the categories of blues, pop, and folk music, just as Mississippi John Hurt's originals did.

While these are not slavish covers of the originals, the songs here are completely in tune with the style, good humor, and craftsmanship of the Hurt recordings. It's particularly enlightening to hear how these artists interpret Hurt's syncopated acoustic guitar style. While Hurt's unique style -- which sounds relaxed and easy but is notoriously difficult to master -- is seldom directly imitated it's hugely influential and revered; this disc has some of the best playing you'll ever hear from John Hiatt and Bruce Cockburn, and the disc appropriately leads off with a showcase fingerstyle performance by under-discoverd Hurt acolyte Chris Smither.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible bargain for under $3.......2004-05-16

As I write this, new copies of this wonderful album are available for less than $3 (through recommended Amazon sellers - check the 'new and used' link). That, my friends, is an exceptional bargain! I paid about $20 (including postage and handling) for this album around 18 months ago and considered it great value for money at the time, since every track (even the much maligned Victoria Williams cover of 'Since I Laid My Burden Down') is at least listenable, if not a veritable aural treat.

If you're a fan of the late Mississippi John Hurt (like myself), you'll find the contributions by Ben Harper and John Hiatt to be most reminiscent of his original recordings. Although these two modern artists come closest in replicating Hurt's distinctive finger-picking style, neither can match the deceptively subtle ease of his guitar playing. This is not to suggest that their versions are any less enjoyable, only that no one on this album can quite match the brilliance of Hurt.

From my perspective, only one track on this album - Gillian Welch's version of 'Beulah Land' - actually surpasses the original. Although the guitar playing is much more subdued on this track, the haunting echoes of Welch's vocals will send shivers down your spine. This track alone makes this $3 album a bargain, but it offers so much more than that. Even if you can't stand the Victoria William's track (it's not that bad, people), this great album is packed with 14 other songs which are hard to skip past. How many other albums for under $3 can you say that about?

2 out of 5 stars tepid tap water.......2003-08-30

A lot of tribute albums trade on the popularity and fame of the "tributee" and fall into the mixed-bag when it comes to quality. This is truly no exception. There are some decent covers that are pleasant enough to listen to in the same way that luke-warm tap water might quench your thirst, but come on...you're interested in John Hurt, listen to his albums. The best song on here doesn't even touch his level of spontaneous genius. I mean its not even in the same room. Hurt himself has an otherworldly, almost angelic quality. Hurt didn't know theory. Hurt picked out a $200 guitar when they told him he could have any one in the place. These are just a bunch of halfway decent, semi-gifted, "folkies" who have wood shedded long enough that their chops aren't half bad. If this was all you heard, you'd dismiss the man himself in a heartbeat like "so what, these are simple, almost childish folk songs...no big deal". Get his Last Sessions album first, and then this if you still want to. Life is too short to listen to mediocre music.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the original.......2003-05-18

...I hadn't heard of John Hurt before. This CD is now one of my absolute favorites. "Chicken" and "Since I've laid my burdon down" will stay with you for days and you'll be replaying the CD several times so that you can get the lyrics right when you're singing them in your head later. "Sliding Delta" is another laid back personal favorite.
Every song on this album is good. Since all of the performers have trained voices, the singing shows off Hurt's songs like he could not. (Nobody trys to beat his up-and-down melodic guitar however. For this you've got to buy the original.) I also liked the variety that different performers bring to the CD as a whole. Hurt's songs could sound a little too similar with his raspy half-whisper voice after a while.
Mississippi John Hurt is an original, but I truly like this CD better than his Avalon Blues originals or his Complete Studio Recodings.

5 out of 5 stars a worthy tribute.......2002-09-19

Hurt was a unique bluesman - funny, laid-back, and unassuming. There would be no value in merely imitating him. But at a time when many tribute albums are filled with third-rate performers parasitizing first-rate songwriters, it is a delight to find a tribute that justifies the word. Each artist tranforms a MJH song to fit his/her own style, and the results are memorable, and often outstanding. I especially liked Gillian Welch's spooky version of Beulah Land, but the entire CD is good (how often can you say that). If you like any of these artists, you will probably love this album. Highly recommended.
