3 out of 5 stars A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

      Album Description

"Theme Composed by Jerry Goldsmith" Jericho was a WWII adventure series following three Allied specialists on secret missions throughout Europe. The theme and second episode were scored by Jerry Goldsmith in his military-suspense mode, replacing a theme by Lalo Schifrin who had scored the pilot. Goldsmith's theme and complete episode score are included on this CD, as are Schifrin's unused theme and a suite from his pilot score, significantly foreshadowing his music to Mission: Impossible. The remainder of Jericho was scored by Morton Stevens, Gerald Fried and Richard Shores, and suites from all of their episodes are included. The music recalls the style of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. but perhaps more grim. "Music Composed and Conducted by Johnny Williams" The Ghostbreaker was a one-hour pilot starring Kerwin Mathews as a parapsychologist investigator; although foreshadowing such television series as Kolchak: The Night Staker and The X-Files, it did not proceed to a series. The theme and pilot score to The Ghostbreaker were by none other than John (then "Johnny") Williams, who wrote a dynamite theme that compares favorably to his TV work for Irwin Allen, and a creepy score including harpsichord and solo soprano. The totality of Williams's score is included here -- a forgotten jewel by one of the world's most famous composers.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Lang Live.......2004-03-31

This disc is a reissue of an album released in 1977 by master guitarist Peter Lang. Lang was discovered by John Fahey in the early 70's and was signed to the legendary Takoma Records. This album was recorded on the Waterhouse label at two different college venues, and is a picture of the artist in his prime. Lang moves easily between six and twelve string guitars and mandolin. His monologues are a bit corny, but still charming given the context of the times ( the mid-seventies). The selections still hold up well over 26 years later. The only criticism I would have is that the recording quality is a bit rough, (as are many live recordings) and this can be a distraction, but overall, the performance quality of Lang's work is outstanding. One thing I realized when listening to this album, is what a fine blues voice Lang has. There are also three studio versions of the pieces from the live concert as bonus tracks. This is a wonderful collection by one of America's guitar masters.

      3 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Peter Lang Solo In Concert.......2004-03-08

This live album was originally released in 1977 on the Waterhouse label. It consists of material from two college campus concerts: one at the University of Texas, the other at Iowa State. This album followed only two other releases by the renowned flat picker. The first was 1972's amazing THE THING AT THE NURSERY ROOM WINDOW; the second was 1975's LYCURGUS.

PRIME CUTS succeeds on two counts. First, there is a warm feel to the playing of these songs in a live setting. Secondly, Lang keeps his singing (which is not his strong suit) to a minimum. One drawback, though, is Lang's storytelling between songs. His bit on "Methane Gas" is only mildly amusing and "Tuning" makes lame jokes about his brother. ["My folks used to push his high chair in the corner and feed him with a slingshot."]

Their are numerous highlights. Lang performs stunning versions of "Wide Oval Ripoff" and "Future Shot at the Rainbow" from his debut and an equally wonderful interpretation of "Round Worm Reel" from LYCURGUS. Other standout tracks are "Hello Baby Blues," "There Will Be a Happy Meeting" and the medley "Rally Round the Flag/Battle Hymn of the Republic."

Lang may have never gained the popularity of Leo Kottke or the cult status of John Fahey, but make no mistake, he is a gifted guitar player. This album proves that. If you enjoyed Lang's debut (the place to start for the novice), you'll find much to enjoy here. RECOMMENDED
