The bonus cuts are good if not unfamiliar to aficionados, and the sound quality is fine. The product arrived quickly and is in fine physical shape. But I got the UK version of the first album plus 8 song bonus edition, not the US version + 10 bonus song one I ordered....I mean, it's all good, but.....

I've been a Stones fan since about 64 or so. I've got prety much all their original albums. Amazon started posting some old ones with lots of bonus tracks and I thought I'd try one that looked like it had a lot of studio outtakes. This is very neat, something I've waited years for the Stones to do but I'm tired of waiting. Any other band would have released this stuff years ago. It's just too bad you have to buy the original album too and not just the outtakes because anyone who would want the outtakes already has the original album. But these are good: some old blues covers, Jagger/Richards originals that didn't quite cut the mustard, some redos of hits. These aren't just different mixes of songs you already have. Not Fade Away is for sure a different take. Look What You Done I'm not sure about. The harp solo is the same, but I wonder if it would be exactly the same if I put it side by side with the original release. Anyway, these are fun and the recording quality of the bonus tracks is equal to the original release. All good and worth it. From a fan for over 40 years.

      3 out of 5 stars Bitter Sweet Indeed.......2005-06-25

      Ok. People have said in the past that Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony" merely 'borrowed' a few notes from Oldham's rendition of "The Last Time". Granted. They looped the main section and at the same time tried to pawn off their over produced song as their own. Many people have stated that the loop doesn't really sound like the original presented here. Granted again. The added strings featured on the Verve's are gorgeous and practically cover the 1960's recording completely. In fact, the string arrangement was the only reason I liked their song. I have seen reviews that do their best to make the reader feel sympathy for the Verve and animosity towards the people who sued them. I may have felt a little twinge in my heart had the Verve not blatantly stolen the original melody for their lead vocal. This is exactly what they did. I defy anyone to listen to this version of "The Last Time" and not sing the lyrics to "Bitter Sweet Symphony" to Oldham's arrangement. When I first heard this I could not stop laughing. In 1997- when "BS" (appropriate initials) was released, I was proud of myself for liking something 'current' as I was never too enamoured with the music of the 1980's onward. How typical that I would zone in on the one song that was already 30 some odd years old and written by one of my all time fave bands, the Rolling Stones. Oh and yes, this Oldham album is rather interesting in itself. Very mid 1960's with some nice arrangements.

      I'm not a fan of The Rolling Stones. But I gotta confess that David Sinclair Whitaker took a piece of banal pop-crap called THE LAST TIME and transmogrified it into a masterpiece. And it incidentally contains the best-ever usage of tubular bells that I've ever heard in any piece of music.

      Let me start this by warning anyone who's buying this to hear the loop from The Last Time which was used in The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony: The sweet string arrangement that starts the latter song is NOT part of this loop. I purchased this disc expecting to hear that pretty phrase somewhere in the song, but instead...well, I didn't. Somewhere, I even got the impression that the disc contained a sample of the loop they used for Bittersweet Symphony, but this is not the case.

      Not that this is a poor disc musically or sonically. Oldham created some very nice arrangements of these tunes and the mix sounds fine for 1966. The orchestra is augmented by drums and guitars and, in some ways, parts of the disc remind me of the song No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In) by the T-Bones, from that same year, only with strings and horns.

      Beyond that, all I can say is this in an OK album for what it offers, but it doesn't offer the loop I was expecting.

      Mirwais, Oasis, Massive Attack, Overseer, Klint, Madonna, even some of the grreaat one-lines from the movie. "Do you know what nemesis means?" Well get this soundtrack either way. Mirwais' "Disco Science" is awesome, as is "Fuckin in the Bushes" by Oasis (and I am NOT an Oasis fan). "Angel" by Massive Attack...incredible. Just get it.

      that doesn't stop that from being one cracker of a cd. the UK edition has 15 songs and 8 quotes from the film making a total of 23 tracks in all. the tracks are very cool the stranglers golden brown and 10cc's dreadlock holiday and overseer's supermoves being my faves but the cd as a whole is pucker. if there is one cd soundtrack you need to get this year is the one. one quick note the US tracklisting differs slightly in terms of running order i do believe in closing if you enjoyed the film (i know i did i saw it twice) you will dig the music on this disc.

        One is better off buying these SACDs alone rather than in this box set due to the outragous total price of the package. I don't own this box set, but have bought a few of the Stones SACDs in single purchases. At most, 20 dollars was spent on each cd, as opposed to a whopping 32 dollars per cd if bought through this box set. Not only are you saving money when buying the SACDs seperatley, you save money by not having to pay for songs you already will have on albums( refering to the greatest hits compilations). Personally, art work, photos, and packaging aren't worth 200 to 250 more dollars.

        The ABKCO 16 disc release of the UK recordings in a single box set is a very beautifully presented lush packaging complete with dramatically improved sonics. DSD layer of the dual layer SACD hybrid discs offers a vast improvement in sound over the conventional CD layer, and the CD layer offers a drastic improvement over the older releases of the same titles. The packaging is individual albums in the shape of miniature LPs.

        For completists, the other 6 releases by ABKCO (there are 22 in all and 16 in this box set) are Hot Rocks (double), More Hot Rocks (double), Singles Collection (triple CD) and the US versions of Aftermath, Between the Buttons and Out of Our Heads.

        Sound is amazing. Electronically reprocessed stereo versions have been replaced by true mono and where available true stereo versions replace the older mono versions.

        The earlier pressings of these SACDs are in miniature LP sizes and have already started becoming collectibles (with value to appreciate over times). New releases of individual CDs are in conventional slip cases.

        I just simply rate this release as 5 stars for the quality of sound, packaging, and value.

        I had posted the earlier review when this box was available for $300 odd [which i personally felt was a cool price for something containing 16 titles in SACD format with a very limited edition box unlike the Dylan SACD box which sells on ebay for $100 to $150 range]. Today, in hindsight, i think it was a sane decision to go for this box as all SACDs are vitually Out of Print and this box used [as of date] is over $1,000 - phew!
