5 out of 5 stars Review of Shakin' Stevens "Now Listen".......2007-07-08

This is a very good Release for Shakin' Stevens. He still has what it takes. The title song rates right up there with his other hits. He also does a good cover of the other hits.

4 out of 5 stars shaky's back you gotta listen.......2007-06-22

I'm from Bombay,India.. and a big Shakin'Stevens fan & was eager to know what happened to him, since he did not release any new album.. he's back with NOW LISTEN and i must say the Shaky magic still exits.. I would like him to release albums more frequently and go on tours to places like Bombay, Dubai, etc .. he should release a duet album of classic rock n roll tracks, plus new material...I like all the songs on this album i did'nt give it 5 stars because..i was hoping to hear a couple of the old shaky style tracks...

for those who have'nt heard Shakin Stevens, I suggest you buy his Greatest hits album first.

welcome back Shaky... we are listening

Oh for the love of that voice....
The vocals for Inhaler sent shivers down my spine and touched my nerve endings! Just Phenomenal!

The nice thing about this album is the studio recording - touching instrumentation, superb recording quality, all live. And her voice sounds at its absolute best unmarred by digital filters.

5 out of 5 stars Could it be?.......2005-05-09

Could it be that this, their fifth CD, far from being a rehash of their earlier releases, is the most accomplished, rich and satisfying of all their efforts? YES!

Though I love all their CDS, each one contain a few tracks that are throw-aways, too similar in melody and production to the other songs on the same CD. NOT SO with "Sit Down and Listen To: The Live Theatre Recordings."

It's title a line from the tune, "Lullaby of Broadway," this disc plays like Hooverphonic Unplugged meets 1960's French Cinema Soundtracks to produce one hell of a super chilled jazz-vocal menu on half the songs, and Edith Piaf meets Dusty Springfield to serve up smoldering torch songs on the rest!

ALL the best songs from "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular," "The Magnificent Tree" and "Jackie Cane" are represented here; the only mar being the short shrift given "Blue Wonder Power Milk," arguably Hooverphonic's best CD before "Sit Down." After hearing these haunting reworkings, I longed to hear "Magenta" in a similar vein.

The best of these rearrangements is "2Wicky," from their debut, in which Geike Arnaert kindles the tension in this song with a staccatto phrasing that eventually breaks into an all-consuming, feverish singing! Running a close second is "Sometimes" from their fourth release, a stripped-down, peppier version that mines the essential sunniness is this previously snowy song. Finally, "Vinegar & Salt" from "Magnificent Tree," turns a saucy song into a dirge delivery of chilling proportions, building into a bonfire of a eulogy!

All is not retread, however. Two previously unreleased tracks, "My Autumn's Done Come" and "The Last Thing I Need Is You" buttress an already rock-solid album. Shockingly, "The Last Thing" could be an Alanis Morrissette song, with it's frank lyrics and get-back attitude! But it's still essentially Hooverphonic-quirky lyrics, odd time-signatures & minor-key melodies. If this is the sign of things to come, this spunky triphop, then I will be sitting down and listening for a long time to come!

5 out of 5 stars No it is not a mistake.......2005-03-15

To the moron who stated that listing Hooverphonic with the likes of Lamb, Massive Attack, etc is a "mistake". I like all those groups and they do fit in the same category. THIS ALBUM IS AN ACOUSTIC ALBUM!!!! If you actually listened to other Hooverphonic albums it would be quite clear why they are recommended on Amazon with groups like Massive Attack, Lamb, etc. I have all the Hooverphonic albums and I love all of them. I actually think they are way better than Lamb (that chick's voice is really irritating most of the time). The programming on their albums is intensely layered, the vocals exquisite, the lyrics provocking. So maybe hearing downtempo/chillout music done acoustically is not your cup of tea. I would agree that this may not be the best induction into listening to Hooverphonic. For that, I would recommend Blue Wonder Powder Milk instead.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant acoustic live recording of their biggest hits.......2004-10-27

If you already listened to Hooverphonic, this one will be a surprise. They left their trip-hop style behind to record their best known tracks live (but without public) and acoustic. This band is really taking chances, after "Introducing Jackie Cane", a strange concept album, they are once again trying another road. This is what makes this band special!
If you do not know Hooverphonic yet, it will not give you a fair idea of their style (closer to Massive Attack, Portishead, Lamb and early Morcheeba, you should rather try "Blue Wonder Power Milk" and "the Magnificent Tree" if you enjoy trip-hop) but if you like quiet, acoustic music, you will enjoy it.

The voice is incredible, the acoustic versions full of passion, with just piano and strings...

This is the kind of CD you listen too at night.

5 out of 5 stars for the fans.......2004-08-23

I'm not entirely sure where to begin, but let's just say that I felt I had to review this to give it a fair cop. I've listened to Hooverphonic (and plenty of other triphop artists) for a long time.
When I got this I didn't realize what it was -- an acoustics album of old hooverphonic work. Given that triphop is largely electronica with soul themes and vocals, I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it.
However, after only one listen I was in love. The pianos and strings versions of classic hooverphonic songs by either vocalist are touching and heartfelt, to be trite. I couldn't believe my ears at the new versions of 'Eden' (off the blue wonder power milk) and 'Vinegar and Salt' (off the magnificent tree) performed with so much passion.
I don't know if I'd recommend this to a new hooverphonic listener; not because it's hard to follow, but because it won't prepare to the upbeat tempos and synthesizer backings of the rest of their work.

When all is said and done I wish I could rate it higher.

5 out of 5 stars Two contrasting albums.......2003-06-15

The first half of this twofer is the album I have dreamed. It was recorded in 1961. As many of the song titles indicate, the album is full of dreamy, romantic ballads. Many of the songs are from the golden age of the Great American Songbook, including some that were originally huge American hits - All I do is dream of you (#1 for Jan Garber in 1934), I'll buy that dream (#2 for Helen Forrest and Dick Haymes in 1945) and When I grow too old to dream (#1 for Glen Gray in 1935). You stepped out of a dream failed to make the top twenty for Kay Kyser in 1941, but it is a masterpiece when sung by Doris on this album. Other great songs include the title track - a Rodgers and Hammerstein song from The King and I and Someday I'll find you (written by Noel Coward). Many people remember Doris for her lightweight, upbeat songs. Doris was also one of the best balladeers of her generation, as this album proves.

The second half of this twofer is the album Listen to Day. It was a promotional album and was only originally available for a few weeks in 1960. Pillow talk, Roly-poly, Possess me and Inspiration were all from the movie Pillow talk. Tunnel of love was the title track of another movie, while Any way the wind blows featured in the movie Please don't eat the daisies. The other six tracks were mostly (if not all) recorded in 1959 or 1960 and feature mainly upbeat, fun songs with the occasional ballad - just like the six movie songs. The song No! would be regarded as controversial these days, having the same idea as Holly Dunn's nineties country song Maybe I mean yes.

Although these two albums are different in style, they are both of an extremely high quality. Despite that, they are also among Doris Day's least known albums.

In the USA, I have dreamed was released on a twofer paired with What every girl should know, but as I write this review, Listen to Day has yet to gain an American release.

5 out of 5 stars Doris Day - The Best Pop Female Singer - Ever!.......2001-12-18

Even though she doesn't get her "props", Doris Day is the best female singer of them all. You don't hear her getting the praise that she so richly deserves, they give it all to Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, even Perry Como, but not to Miss Day, who almost single-handedly saved the movie musical from extinction when she became an instant success after her first film. But singers, real singers, seem to come up with her name when "the best" is spoken about. I've heard such people as Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross mention her as one of their favorites when growing up. When Bob Hope was asked to name the greatest singers, he paused and said, "Frank Sinatra, Doris Day and Judy Garland."

Her voice is hard to describe. Many people call it "dreamy". Yes, it is that, but it's much, much more. There is an urgency to tell the truth and to tell it to ONE PERSON. Rosemary Clooney described her as "being very personal" with a song. I agree. I love putting on my earphones late at night and just lisening to Doris Day "go". "I Have Dreamed" is by far, the best version I have ever heard. I've owned the lp for years (...) and I also own the original lp of "Listen to Day".

Now, I'll buy this two CD set for the incredible sound I'm sure it has. After I bought all of the Bear Family sets (sooo much music!), but not all of Doris' vast output, I heard "Kiss Me Again, Stranger" for the first time. I fell desperately in love with this song and Doris' intimate performance. Absolutely flawless.

I know that Miss Day has turned down the Kennedy Center Honor and the American Film Institute's tribute, but I wish she'd accept the Grammy Legend or Lifetime Achievement Award and a special Oscar for her tremendous contributions to both the music and film worlds.

Both of these albums are great and I plan to enjoy them for years to come.

    5 out of 5 stars Doris Day: "I Have Dreamed" -- A Classic!.......2001-08-01

The re-released Sony CD ("I Have Dreamed") is Doris Day at her loveliest and dreamiest. Classical divas (from the Met, no less) have told me how they marvel at Doris Day's vocal sensitivity, her musical phrasing, and her ability to turn a popular lyric into sheer poetry.

The ballads on this CD are beauties. My personal favorites are Rodgers' & Hammerstein's "I Have Dreamed" and "All I Do Is Dream of You." I'm also particularly fond of the song "I Believe in Dreams." This may reflect a slight bias on my part.(I wrote it!) I also did the orchestral arrangements, conducted, and (yes) played the solo piano accompaniment on "All I Do Is Dream of You."

I was pretty young when we made the album for Columbia Records. It's another example of Doris's legendary kindness (not only to animals) that she trusted me with great songs by the likes of Noel Coward, Kurt Weill, her friend Paul Francis Webster, and Livingston and Evans who wrote the incredibly beautiful "We'll Love Again" which Doris sang in the Alfred Hitchcock film, "The Man Who Knew Too Much."

I'm happy that "I Have Dreamed" has received such glowing reviews. All I can add is: I did my best to match the loveliness, delicacy and beauty of her performances.

All I can add about Doris Day? She is incomparable.

5 out of 5 stars Doris Day at her best.......2000-12-22

I own several Doris Day albums, and I consider this one of her best. I play it over and over. I love all the songs on the "I Have Dreamed" album. I find myself pressing the repeat button on "When I Grow Too Old To Dream" and "All I Do Is Dream of You." These are the best versions of both songs that I have ever heard. The piano on "All I Do.." is fantastic; whoever you are, KUDOS! I also love the cover song "I Have Dreamed." I had heard the song many times, but I never noticed how beautiful it was until Doris Day sang it. How nice to have a Noel Coward song. Coward wrote some fantastic music and "Someday I'll Find You" is one of his best. Doris Day does it justice. The liner notes include the original album covers. The original notes for "I Have Dreamed" were written by Pete Martin for the Saturday Evening Post. Well done Mr. Martin! He uses the word "velvet" to describe Miss Day's voice; he is right on mark. This is a 2-album CD. The second album is a lucky find. It includes some little-known material done especially for this album as well as some better known material from Doris Day's movies. "Heart Full of Love" has a beautiful 60's sound. I wonder why it wasn't a hit. Getting both ablums on one CD makes it a real bargain. If you are thinking about it, buy it. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Wow this is something ........2005-06-03

Good cd. A lot of influence from B-52 when it comes to vocals. Beats are defiantly mid 80s early 90s. Most of the tracks are quick but not like punk rock quick. The sampling and the bass are balanced in the weird way but it works well in this album.
Favorite tracks are Outside, the meeting and take it. If you buy this you wont be disappointed.
By the way it work great as driving soundtrack.

I saw these guys open for Echoboy in London back in '02. I didn't know what to make of them the first few minutes. However, I was soon hooked. This is a great CD that on a whole doesn't compare to anyone I can think of. This is the CD that you put in and wait for you friends to say "who is this"? If you like infectious bass you'll love it as well. If you can appreciate an 80's punk vibe with a twist of B52's in the vocals...this is the cocktail for you.

To really get the M&D experience..check out one of their live shows.

Wonderful compilation from the forward thinking BBE Label with Masters At Work as the music selectors. After hearing this you realize where the duo take inspiration and even sample their music from. They are true music lovers. It's not a mixed CD but the fact that all the song are from different genres and time periods it sort of is. Each half of the duo respectively picked their own inspirational tracks. Track from the likes of Tito Puente, Rude Movements, the classic Candido(which to this day can stand up to any modern production)to Nina Simone's Sea-Line Woman(Which the duo would later remix for Verve's Remix project) are juxtopsed to modern nuggets from Pepe Bradock, Blaze, and even a then un-known Jill Scott. If you love music and love a groove regardless of genre this 2 disk set is for you. From Jazz, Salsa, House, Funk, and Hip-Hop with love.

5 out of 5 stars Latin fusion, old skool marvels and deep deep grooves...........2000-06-13

Buy this CD if you love good music. Buy this CD if, like me, you're interested in the inspirations that make two of the world's best DJ's produce classic tune after classic tune.

Disc one begins with a wonderful samba rhythm and gorgeous vocal from Karen Ramirez that sets the scene (but not the pace) for things to come. The Latin flavour weaves its way through many of the tracks (on both discs) but never far away you can instantly see in all the trakcs what makes MAW tick.

Tracks 4 and 5 of disc 1 drop the groove with deep, expansive house numbers that just get better and better. Track 5 for me, is the cream of disc 1 - Blaze take an innocuous old school acid house groove and transforms it into a thing of subtle, funky beauty that DEMANDS to be played again and again - the louder the better. Having the mighty Taana Gardner is a sure fire hit - her sultry voice coupled with funky 70s disco, sounds as fresh as ever and stands as a tribute to the Mighty Larry Levan.

Disc 2 (Kenny's Contribution) is more overtly latin in feel, but none the interesting for this, with some excellent tunes. Its good to see that the likes of Nina Simone and Jill Scott featuring on a `dance' album.

Put together, this double CD makes compulsive listening and I recommend it to anyone who loves good music, chosen by excellent DJs compiled lovingly as only they know how.

    Enjoy.

if you don't know about this band, i won't try and change that now. just go see them live. you'll rock, be spellbound, have fun and be inspired all in the one night.

if you're american, you should probably wait because this single will be released in america soon, along with lay me down. buy the album for the birds, if you haven't already. the version of headlong on the album is better, in my opinion. but god bless mom, new partner and listen girl (with an instrumental version of headlong at the end) make this something you'll keep for a long, long time
