Enjoying The Pleasures of K. Battle & C. Parkening.......2007-05-06
Whether you are very familiar with these two artists or have never heard either one, you will delight in this musical collaboration. Only a guitarist of Christopher Parkening's stature could be the ideal accompaniment to the perfection of Kathleen Battle's voice. The music ranges from selections by John Dowland to American spirituals, Bach/Gounod, Villa-Lobos, Granados and some Spanish folk songs. The result is a coherent, soothing and utterly delightful listening experience. You will revisit this album often, and always be glad that you have it. For fans of Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening, I think it is a must.
Great blending of the talents of two top-notch artists in their respective fields. Parkening on the guitar and Battle singing........2006-01-31
We always enjoyed seeing and hearing Battle in concerts, usually on the television and Parkening has been a favorite guitarist. To listen to these two fine artists in concert is a real treat.
Superb technique, emotionally flat, but enjoyable even so........2005-05-25
I can't imagine these songs being performed with any greater technical brilliance than they are by Parkening and Battle on this CD. Both are virtuosos, him in the guitar, her the voice. Their skill is particularly apparent in the Dowland songs, the "Ave Maria", and the Bachianas brasileiras no. 5 (for me, the high point of the recording), which are all in a formal style well suited to the talents of the performers.
I compare the Brazilian songs to the version recorded by Salli Terri with Laurindo Almeida in the late '50's on "Duets with Spanish Guitar", which I have listened to repeatedly since I first heard it in 1959. Battle's phrasing, enunciation, and vocal skill are far superior to Terri's, but Terri brought a level of emotion to her singing that Battle seems to lack. Where Battle's perfection enhances her superb performances of the Dowland and Villa-Lobos pieces, it seems to detract from her performance of the Brazilian folk pieces.
I find this to be true again in the spirituals - vocal perfection and control detracting from the "soul" required to bring out the "spiritual" feeling. Imagine these same pieces sung by Mahalia Jackson or Aretha Franklin and you'll understand my point.
Parkening's performance has the same quality - technical virtuosity, especially noticeable in his lute-like technique in the Dowland solo - but lacking in emotional depth.
The classical selections are highly recommended, the folk pieces a bit disappointing, but overall an enjoyable recording.
ONE OF MY FAVOURITES.......2004-03-19
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BATTLE ALBUMS, HER SWEET VOICE IS ACCOMPAINED BY THE GUITAR VIRTUOSO CHRISTOPHER PARKENING, TOGETHER CREATE A TENDER, DELIGHTFUL & BEAUTIFUL LISTENING EXPERIENCE. BACHIANAS BRASILEIRAS N- 5 HAS IT`S BEST PERFORMANCE IN THIS CD.
Fans will be delighted!.......2003-08-25
Fans, maybe, but I must say I'm not a huge fan of Kathleen Battle or opera or songs in different languages, either. My mom is, though. And through her I have heard Kathleen's best. And her very best (if you ask me) is one of the tracks ON THIS CD titled "Ain't that good news," even though it should be called "Ain'ta dat good news," since that is how its sung. It is a really good song (ask anybody) with a little surprise high-note at the end. If I were you I would (if not buy this CD right here and now) then go to [a book store] and see if their computers will let you hear "Ain't that good news" because that song is great.

A great CD from my original college days.......2006-01-14
This album made Ride a little more palatable for the casual listener, which should have really given them some sort of success because this is good record. The arrangements are all really simple, but still sound great with all of that distortion and layering washing over them. I saw them at the 930 club for the tour of this album and they were excellent. I had seen them previously for the Nowhere tour and they were with Lush. That show wasn't so good. Hmmmmm... Wish I could go dig the CD out of storage right now.

(three and a half stars) good overall, but no "Nowhere".......2005-10-13
It' simple really. If you, like me, are a huge fan of Ride's album "Nowhere," when you heard "Leave it all Behind," (the first song on Ride's third album, "Going Blank Again") you were pleased as punch that the band would continue their "Shoegazer" styled sound. When you heard the second song, "Twisterella," your reaction was "what the **** is this!" Of course, if you like "Twisterella," then you probably thought that the song was a refreshing departure from the band's past.
In my opinion, "Going Blank Again" has two songs which meet the extremely high standard set by its predecessor, namely the aforementioned "Leave it all Behind," and "Chrome Waves," which received some college radio play. "OX4" is very pretty, and kind of reminds me of the Flock of Seagulls' "Space Age Love Song." "Mousetrap," "Time After Time," and "Time Machine," are fine. The rest to me is just filler.
I suppose that the "Shoegazer" genre had a shelf life, and maybe the members of Ride felt like going more mainstream. Unfortunately, this made for some rather dull entries on "Going Blank Again." Still, this album is better than Ride's two subsequent (and last) albums, "Carnival of Light" and "Tarantula."
It's the singer, not the song..........2005-10-03
I was listening to this recently, trying to figure out why Ride never really made it big, and it became apparent pretty quickly-the vocals. Sometimes I wonder if these bands just draw names out of a hat to decide who will be the singer. The lyrics are gibberish and they are recited, more or less, in a flat sort of monotone voice. Oh, I understand, the vocals are supposed to be detached, ironic, distant-this is shoegazer neo-psychedelia. Whatever.
Too bad, because musically they stood apart from many of their ilk. Much more melodic, hooky, yet still noisy enough. A really strong singer with better lyrics could have put them over the top.
Surprising, because it's obvious that Ride has listened to The Who more than a few times. Did they notice that The Who had a charismatic front man who had a distinctive voice, singing interesting lyrics with a strong voice? Did they understand that this is the model for pop music?
Maybe the Brits can have a tv show like the one INXS had-find a singer for this band!
truly underrated Shoegazer Classic. Buy this CD........2005-09-12
I am always surprised how often Ride's masterpiece is overlooked or ranked below "Nowhere". Clearly "Nowhere" was a seminal CD and showed their promise, but it was on this CD, "Going Blank Again", that Mark Gardener showed VAST improvement on his vocals, and he and Andy Bell (now of Oasis) truly came into their own as songwriters. The quality of the production is superb, though perhaps not brilliant, and the band play their instruments with consummate skill and were clearly well-rehearsed before going into the studio.
With classics such as "Cool Your Boots", "Chrome Waves" and "Leave It All Behind" (among others), this CD would be worth buying for those tracks alone. But there's hardly a weak track on it! "Time Machine"'s intro is a bit over-long, as is the intro for the genuinely emotional and beautifully melodic "OX4", but otherwise this shoegazer classic is virtually without peer. (excepting of course such CDs as MBV's "Loveless", Lush's "Gala", and a few others).
Ride are one of the very best shoegazer bands to ever put their sounds to record, and this is without a doubt their very best effort (kind of went downhill after this one I'm afraid). The wall of sound, haunting vocal lines blended with layers of chorus and verb and feedback and...well...it's all there. Just listen to it. You'll thank yourself.

Poll winners means perfection.......2004-08-04
These three guys were not lucky poll winners. They were winners because they were rightly the best in their instrument category but not only this. They taken together were a fantastic unit, with great musical ideas in the trio context. And they proved once more their abilities here, on this second album of the saga. I mean, these great can transform "volare" the italian popular little melody (that I'm sure noone would listen again) into an interesting and catching swinging little portrait. But for more serious efforts you simply have to listen to the masterful rendition of "The spring is here". A master in guitar trio playing. Wonderfully balanced. The opener "Be deedle dee do" is a blues instead, taken at medium tempo. Barney, a musician strongly rooted in blues, wrote the theme for this blues. "Angel eyes" has a splendid, touching intro by Barney's guitar.
The fact is that these guys really know how to play, in every sense. I'm not talking only about technical chops, they listen to each other, they know the meaning of the word "dynamic", they invent musical devices, interesting rhiytmical, melodical and harmonical situations, different in every tune. They have personality and they have chops and a personal recognizable sound. They deeply understand the tune's essence and arrange the parts to take the best out of the tune and out of the trio setting. Nothing here is out of place. Everything sounds perfect, everything is in place. Everything sound right, every note says something, every musical decision is right.
How do you spell perfection? Let's do it together c'mon, repeat with me P, O, L, L, - W, I, N, N, E, R, S. Ok.
The Winners Repeat as Champions.......2004-02-01
As I stated in my review of the self-titled "Poll Winners" debut, Guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne were the people's choice on their instruments in the late 1950s. Since they had recorded together in the past (with a variety of frontmen), it was only natural that they try to reap the financial rewards of their popularity by forming the Poll Winners Trio. Their second album, "The Poll Winners Ride Again!," picks up where the first album left off -- a perfect blend of jazz ear-candy and passionate, professional playing. With the exception of Kessel's two original compositions, "Be Deedle Dee Do" and " Foreign Intrigue," this August 1958 session is an all standard affair, and they are all rendered beautifully, particularly the latin anthem "Volare" and "Surrey with the Fringe on Top." Simply put, the Poll Winners easily repeat as champions on "Ride Again!"

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.
Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Moved to tears.......2004-03-18
Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.
Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27
John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.
Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22
As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.
Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02
This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

Customer Reviews:
Simply Stunning....Ride's Masterpiece!!.......2006-10-17
I know that may be a bit of hyperbole in the title of this review, especially since Ride's previous album, Nowhere, is damn near perfect. However, Going Blank Again simply is their finest moment from beginning to end. And in this remastered and expanded version, even more so.
First, the sound is INCREDIBLE...*ALL* of the Ride remasters truly live up to their names. They all are expanded with bonus tracks from Ride's EPs, which is also a welcome addition.
This album is just stunning, mixing perfectly Ride's wall-of-guitar sonic landscapes with their jangly and melodic pop songs, and those vocal harmonies! The individual performances on here are phenomenal, but as a band, Ride meshes together like very few. Wow.
The album starts off with the epic and amazing 8-minute long Leave Them All Behind, and then just moves from strength to strength....Twisterella, Mouse Trap, Time Machine, Time of Her Time, OX4, Making Judy Smile....fantastic.
And the bonus tracks are all excellent, especially the stunning 11-minute Grasshopper, an instrumental tour de force.
In short, if you're new to Ride or just a fan of GREAT early 1990s British rock, this is an essential album.
an album more than worthy of a remaster.......2006-03-22
I finally just bought this classic, remastered CD as my vinyl has all but worn out and I'm thrilled that I did. The beginning ambience and layered guitars exploded through my car speakers and created an entirely new listening experience of "Leave Them All Behind" (who can ever get tired of this track??). The inclusion of the "Leave Them All Behind" and "Twisterella" EP's are a perfect compliment to the rest of the album, with the 11 minute "Grasshopper" closing out the proceedings. I saw these guys play with Slowdive back in the day and hearing OX4 again, fine-tuned and shiny, makes me painfully miss the great rock music being produced in early 90's britain. Don't skip this release; re-live the glory!
Wow, a fave from my original college days.......2006-01-14
This album made Ride a little more palatable for the casual listener, which should have really given them some sort of success because this is good record. The arrangements are all really simple, but still sound great with all of that distortion and layering washing over them. I saw them at the 930 club for the tour of this album and they were excellent. I had seen them previously for the Nowhere tour and they were with Lush. That show wasn't so good. Hmmmmm... Wish I could go dig the CD out of storage right now.
My favorite album of the 90s.......2004-06-27
Looking back on the 90s, there were many great albums. Some folks loved Nevermind while others preferred OK Computer or even Deserter's Songs (Mercury Rev). While those are all great albums, Ride's Going Blank Again would be my choice for the proverbial desert island disc.
Leave Them All Behind, the epic 8:17 opening track, opens with a keyboard sequence that sounds reminiscent of the Who, and the song lives up to the comparison with lots of noise, drumming that Keith Moon would be proud of and layers of swirling guitars built on top of the drums. Cool Your Boots is another great track with really inventive rhythms and effects-laden guitar. Every song on the album has something to offer and is still a joy to listen to more than 10 years later.
The 2001 Ignition reissue/remaster version features four bonus tracks recorded during the album sessions (and originally released as b-sides): Going Blank Again, Howard Hughes, Stampede and Grasshopper. All four tracks are strong enough that they could have made the album. In fact, this is one of those rare albums where there just isn't a weak song.
If you're not already a Ride fan, start with this album. It will leave you wanting more. If you aleady had the Creation/Sire version of this album - buy the Ignition release. The sound quality is improved from the remastering and the extra tracks really add to the album experience.
Remastered, no REALLY!.......2003-02-04
If you're skeptical about purchasing remastered CDs, you should be. But don't worry about this one! THIS REMASTER IS INCREDIBLE! Not only does it sound ten times better, you also get extra tracks from eps released arround the same time. It really sounds incredible! If you're a fan of Ride, you have to have this!

"Broadway Shows from the 1960's ~ Percy Faith".......2004-02-23
Percy Faith blends two award winning Broadway Shows together "Subways Are For Sleeping" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 8533 in 1961) and "Do I Hear A Waltz?" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9117 in 1965), following the formula of previous albums from the vault of rare finds ~ two more winners are under the baton of the Maestro.
First twelve tracks "Subways Are For Sleeping", featuring the songs of Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Jule Styne with outstanding arrangements on very catchy tunes ~ like "BE A SANTA", "COMES ONCE IN A LIFETIME", "GETTING MARRIED", "HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE A FACE?", "I JUST CAN'T WAIT", "I SAID IT AND I'M GLAD", "I'M JUST TAKING MY TIME", "NOW I HAVE SOMEONE", "RIDE THROUGH THE NIGHT", "WHAT IS THIS FEELING IN THE AIR?", "WHEN YOU HELP A FRIEND OUT" and "WHO KNOWS WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN?", all have the hallmark sound and the authentic "Percy Faith Touch" on every selections.
Second twelve tracks ~ "Do I Hear A Waltz", featuring the tunes of Richard Rodgers and Stephen Soundheim enhanced by the performances of arranger/conductor Percy Faith and his Orchestra ~ "A PERFECTLY LOVELY COUPLE", "DO I HEAR A WALTZ?", "HERE WE ARE AGAIN", "MOON IN MY WINDOW", "NO UNDERSTAND", "SOMEONE LIKE YOU", "STAY", "TAKE THE MOMENT", "THANK YOU SO MUCH", "THINKING", "THIS WEEK AMERICANS" and "WE'RE GONNA BE ALL RIGHT", enamored to the luxurious sound of Faith's string arrangements ~ you're immediately hooked on these tracks ~ marvelous performances enthralling listener's for some fifty years.
The people at Collectables should be commended for bringing back some of Maestro Faith's best works on compact disc ~ there is so much more in the vast vaults, hopefully there will be more to follow...gotta love it!
Total Time: 68:19 on 24 Tracks ~ Collectables 7480 ~ (5/21/2002)
