Don't expect liner notes, recording personnel, or even so much as the years these 10 cuts were waxed; do, however, expect a collection of fiery, fun, and deftly performed country instrumentals. Tommy Jackson ranks as perhaps the most influential session fiddler in history, one who's graced recordings by everyone from Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, Patsy Cline, Ray Price, Rose Maddox, Faron Young, Doc Watson, Bob Wills, and Red Foley to Joan Baez, Duane Eddy, and Doug Sahm. These wonderful square-dance favorites most likely come from Jackson's days at Dot Records in the late 1950s. The electric guitarist on most cuts is almost certainly the fleet-fingered Hank Garland, another leading light of the Nashville studio scene and master of transposing fast-paced fiddle tunes for electric guitar. Together, they update the old-time square-dance concept with lively arrangements and stellar, crisp playing. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

5 out of 5 stars The essence of a great entertainer catpured........2004-05-03

Liberace was a great showman and entertainer. This double CD is the best record of his classic act and demonstrates what Liberace was all about. Although recorded in 1954 the sound quality is fine and many of the elements from that period remained part of Liberace's act over more than 30 years. Interestingly - he was not yet using "I'll Be Seeing You" as his exit music. If there is anything you like about Liberace - get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great fiddlin, great price.......2003-01-17

Tommy Jackson was the king of fiddlers in the 50's. This CD has good versions of tunes including one of his that should be played more often, Acorn Hill Breakdown. Plus hot takeoff guitar solos. Buy and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars KIDNAPPED AND HELD CAPTIVE!.......1999-12-01

Tommy Jackson kidnaps your mind and keeps your attention while holding your feet captive. Anyone who doesn't buy these tunes (or any other) will miss an enjoyment of a life time.

5 out of 5 stars Real Patriotism Through Extraordinary Music.......2003-02-26

In the wake of considerable ersatz patriotism following 9/11, I have become sensitive to what I consider to be acts of true patriotism. Recording these very American songs, with a tremendous commitment to showing them in their most pristine and revealing light, is one of those, perhaps small, acts of patriotism that are profound in their ability to show the best of the United States of America. I used the word "commitment" in the above sentence because that is the underlying theme of this entire venture. Ms. Danton sings with amazing clarity of voice and tremendous enthusiasm for the material. Each of these songs is a minor masterpiece, as presented, and the whole album is captivating and deeply compelling. These songs stay with you. I find myself humming the melodies for days. They are, indeed, songs many of us grew up with or have heard for years. So there you have it: 5 stars for the material, 5 stars for the performances and 5 stars for the recording quality.
