While not yet part of mainstream American music, Middle Eastern music, as evidenced by the rise of Algerian pop star Khaled in France, has sidled up to other club music forms in the hot spots of Paris, London, and elsewhere. To that end, Putumayo's Arabic Groove brings us up to date with their compilation, a jubilant sonic party rooted in ancient musical tradition and structure, steeped in the au courant flavors of hip-hop, R&B, and other urban western forms. Lebanese, Egyptian, Moroccan, and Algerian artists such as former Londoner Natacha Atlas (who has been featured with both Transglobal Underground and Jah Wobble) contribute 11 songs which lend themselves to sensual dance, exotic drink, and glamorous gatherings of multicultural hipsters. Traditional Arabic instruments such as the flute and oud blend with guitar, bass, and drums, laying down plenty of funk, fun, and full-on booty-shaking rhythms. This is excellent for either listening or dancing. My dance teacher found it also to be an excellent example of music to dance to. Everyone who has heard it has enjoyed it. I really recommend it for Arabic music lovers everywhere.

This was the CD that started Putumayo's Groove series;so far,it's one of the best.While many of the songs are about unrequited love,they are also incredibly danceable&upbeat.

3)Leiley-A remix by Transglobal Underground.Dania's song of longing is amazing.
4)Kidda-This song introduced me to the great Natacha Atlas.I now have 3 of her CDs.This song,of course,is about unrequited love&is quite raw&powerful.
5)Ne me jugez pas-A boy band from Morocco sings a great song remixed by Volodia.

With the help of some friends (James Taylor and Alison Krauss lend some vocal support), the trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor have created yet another fascinating hybrid of chamber music and bluegrass. This follow-up to 1996's Appalachia Waltz is filled with highly lyrical string passages, a homage or two to Copland, and plenty of tracks where Meyer's bass vamps with the best of them. This is reflective (and relaxing) music, lacking the intricate structure of classical music and the rough edges of folk. But, boy, is it catchy! Yo-Yo Ma fans may be disappointed to hear that--aside from the gorgeous "Duet for Cello and Bass"--the cellist takes more of a supportive role on this disc. Still, this is fun music, more intimate than Short Trip Home (Meyer's other crossover project for Sony), but still lively (just check out "1B" or "Caprice for Three"). --Jason Verlinde

These are flawless preformances of great music by some of the most talented artists on the planet. Slumber My Darling will leave you so relaxed you'll have to remember to breathe. The reels will bring you to your feet. This music reaches the soul as well as the ear.

I suppose you will enjoy this if you really like Yo-Yo Ma at his most boring. This is glorified elevator music and about as interesting.

I actually heard this cd while having a root canal done at the dentist's office. I find the music so wonderful and the vocal segments are great. It does make you feel like you are walking the Appalachian Trail...and makes a root canal painless!

I have bought two copies of this disc -- one for my car. The music is wonderful, and the performances are memorable. There's a DVD version, which is equally good. The performers obviously loved working together, and that's fully evident.

Too Studied.......2005-06-22

Two of my favorite CDs in the last couple of years were "Obrigado Brazil" and "In Full Swing" by Yo Yo Ma and Mark O'Connor respectively. I found both of those CDs to be fine examples of genre-busting joyful music making. So when I saw these guys paired here, I snapped it up. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.

The music throughout most of the CD sounds too labored, too studied. It is, frankly, not that inspiring. The playing throughout is, of course, of the highest calibre and the recorded sound excellent. But there is no hint of the exhuberance of Folk or Bluegrass which is the supposed inspiration for the disc. The guest spots by James Taylor and Alison Krauss are good but they sound like outtakes from their own CDs, these songs are out of context here. (But note how many other Amazon reviews reference their contributions as reasons for loving the CD. Perhaps so many five star ratings because these people need broader musical exposure?)

Too many critics over intellectualize. I base my ratings on one simple criterion: How much did the music move me? In this case, not much.

Their setup was primitive enough--guitar, Autoharp, and vocals--but in the late '20s the trio of A.P. Delaney Carter, his wife Sara, and his sister-in-law Maybelle would change (chart?) the course of country music forever. They did it with haunting harmonies, incredible guitar playing (thanks to Maybelle's driving strums on her Gibson L-5 guitar), and a vast repertoire that included murder ballads, gospel tunes, love songs, and Appalachian folk tunes--many of which would be covered by musicians for decades to come. Unlike their musical peers in the late '20s and early '30s, the Carters weren't just playing "hillbilly" music; this was, quite simply, country music, and their timeless output still resonates with listeners today. JSP's bargain-priced, five-CD collection is easily the most complete, essential collection of their music available, capturing and remastering their RCA Victor recordings (their later, less-seminal sessions for Decca and the American Record Company are not included). Hearing five CDs' worth of music from the Carter Family is almost sensory overload--from the initial 1927 Bristol sessions, which Johnny Cash hailed as "the single most important event in the history of country music," to their depression-era recordings. The Carter Family is the archetype of American Music. This JSP collection faithfully documents the original 78 rpm recordings in chronological order. Though the digital remastering is basic, having the complete sessions is indispensable.

An Excellent Collection Of Songs By One Of The Great Bands In All Of American Music.......2007-04-27

Ralph Peer came south to Bristol, Tennessee, in 1927, to find some new "hillbilly" musicians to record for the Victor label. He ended up "discovering" both Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family. These two acts would go on to form the basis for what came to be called country music.

The Carter Family's beautiful sound was powered by Sara's clear, gorgeous voice and Maybelle's unique and influential guitar style. The songs mostly came from "song catching" trips which A.P. would go on, sometimes with a black musician friend named Leslie Riddle. They would travel through states like North Carolina and Tennesse looking for gospel hymns, folk songs and love ballads that they could record. The Carter Family ended up becoming one of the most popular and important musical groups of their era and thus were able to bring to a wider audience many great songs which would have otherwise likely remained in obscurity.

When I listen to this music I often feel very relaxed and at peace. The music is almost like a time machine, taking you back to the past with its stories of ill fated romance, hobos on the railroad and mountain tops covered with wild flowers. There are so many songs that I love on this collection, too many to mention by name. But I especially appreciate their earlier material. For example, the first 6 songs on disc A, which are from their original audition in Bristol, have a sound that is so intensely raw and heart felt. But really the whole collection is great and a must purchase for any fan of great American music.

Pure, Uncontaminated Music.......2006-08-30

I bought this cd set just before I drove up the California coast, and it provided a perfect soundtrack for the rural landscape and meandering highways. My only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner.

Like most boomers, I grew up completely unaware of the original Carter Family. I watched the Johnny Cash Show in the late 60s and knew about his wife June and her sisters, but still nothing about that older woman in their group. It wasn't until sometime in the late seventies or early eighties, perhaps from Rolling Stone, I learned that the original Carter Family had been a trio that recorded sometime back in the 20s and 30s. It was about this time I first heard the term "Carter Style" and "Carter Brush".

Then, a few years ago, I heard Uncle Tupelo's version of "No Depression", and I decided I wanted to investigate further. A friend loaned me some compilation CDs of old-time country music with the Carter versions of "Sunny Side of Life" and "Can the Circle be Unbroken" on them. I bought and watched the DVD of the PBS documentary. The more I discovered about these fascinating musicians the more I wanted to hear.

This is, quite simply, the most beautiful, purest, and least commercial music you will ever find on CD. It's hard to decide which is more riveting, Sara's electrifying vocals, Maybelle's trailblazing guitar, or the gut-wrenching harmonies which at times surpass that of the Beach Boys.

Throw your prejudices aside and listen to this with an open mind. "hillbilly music" has been satirized often; but there is no pretense or cynicism here. These people sang and played with their hearts, something that's rare in this American Idol era.

RURAL TREASURES.......2006-06-19

Since my youth I have had an ear for roots music, whether I was conscious of that fact or not. The original of that interest first centered on the blues, then early rock and roll and later, with the folk revival of the early 1960's, folk music. I have often wondered about the source of this interest. I am, and have always been a city boy, and an Eastern city boy at that. Nevertheless, over time I have come to appreciate many more forms of roots music than in my youth. The subject of the following review is an example.

With the recent Johnny Cash movie biography Walk the Line the Carter Family has again come into greater public prominence. And rightly so. The trio performing simple country (or better rural) music mainly composed by A.P. Carter evokes, if not a simpler time, then in any case, a simpler type of music. While I cannot listen endlessly to such music at one sitting about one-half a cd at a time works. Why not the whole cd? There is a very similar melody and guitar line to their work in most songs. The value of each song sometimes gets lost in the basic repetition.

A note on subject matter- The bulk of the songs concern home, hearth lovesickness and religion as might be expected from mountain people. And that is okay. This reviewer, although not a religious man, can appreciate the simple, fundamentalist but very personal religion evoked here. Not to romanticize the simple rural folk of the past but I do not believe that the religious sentiments expressed here are the same as those of religious fundamentalists today who want to ram a theocracy down our throats in the United States.

If there's one thing film producers and record executives like more than Success, it's Success: Part 2. Thus when Ridley Scott's high-tech sword 'n' sandal epic scored both Golden Globe wins and Academy Award nods for Best Film and Best Score, it was a sure bet that another volume of Hans Zimmer's and Lisa Gerrard's music for the film couldn't be far behind. Though not exactly leftovers, the tracks here sometimes point to the fact that there wasn't enough fresh material to fill this volume out, hence we get some remixed cues, a handful of familiar music with dramatic dialog excerpts edited and superimposed (or misplaced, with decidedly mixed results), and even a beat-heavy, dance-club mix of "Now We Are Free." With a little over half an hour of entirely fresh material and some souvenir dialog snippets over the rest, there's enough here to please Gladiator die-hards. Also of note: guitarist Heitor Pereira's flamenco-flavored flourishes are better showcased throughout; and "The Gladiator Waltz" serves up one of Zimmer's original synth demos (with a dash of Russell Crowe dialog up front)--a dramatic amp-up of Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War" that's a prime example of the composer's state-of-the-art digital orchestral conjuring. --Jerry McCulley

One of those pivotal soundtracks. Unfortunately, there is dialogue over a few of the tracks, but it is well worth sitting or fast-forwarding through. There is a duduk (the sound used for that thing Mr. Tumnus plays in 'Narnia'), and I have fallen in love with it. There is the use of a female voice (Lisa Gerrard) wailing in another language, which had become something of a trend ('Troy', 'Munich', 'Narnia' again, and many others). "Now We Are Free" is the kind of song that first intrigues you, then entraps you, and then takes you on an emotional ride. The soundtrack is intensely bittersweet, exciting ("The Gladiator Waltz"--yes, you're supposed to giggle--Hans did!), and just very consumable. If you were impressed by movie--and I haven't run into anybody yet who wasn't--then consider this soundtrack an equivalent of that experience, but audio.

I HAVE TO SAY HANS ZIMMER IS THE GREATEST OF HIS ERA. I HAVE PURCHASED ALMOST ALL OF HIS MAJOR SCORES FROM RAIN MAN, CRIMSON TIDE, GLADIATOR, AND EVEN THE LATEST BATMAN AND I KNOW I HAVE PLENTY OF MORE THAT COULD BE LISTED. I FIRST WAS WEIRY ABOUT BUYING THE SECOND SCORE TO GLADIATOR THINKING IT WOULD BE JUST LIKE THE FIRST ONE. IT IS AWESOME AND JUST AS GOOD OR BETTER, IF YOU ARE A TRUE ZIMMER FAN YOU HAVE TO ADD THIS TO YOUR COLLECTION. I HOPE HE KEEPS MAKING MUSIC FOR YEARS TO COME.

Excellent Extention!.......2005-10-22

Gladiator may be the best middle eastern score ever written. The Duduk was incredible!

The first CD was amazing as well, however, I believe this disc to have a few advantages.

First of all, "The Gladiator Waltz." This song TOTALLY improves upon "The Battle" from disc 1. The original stopped way before the new track. The synth sounds are very good, and don't take away from the beauty at all!

Another highlight is "Homecoming" this is a sad, angry song that will have your blood pumping. If you've seen the movie, you remember the scene where Maximus escapes execution, and rides home like a mad man, only to find his wife and son Crucified. A truly angry and intense song.

"Secrets" is a sneaky evil track, portraying the violent insanity of Commodus.

I have mentioned the highlights, but all the rest are great too! A must have CD, even if you own the first!

beautiful music.......2005-07-28

This is just what the title says: more great(beautiful) music from the motion picture, including some "spiced-up" remixes. This album also features sound clips from the movie. Listening to it will make you think you're in Rome again.

Disappointing companion to the Oscar nominated score........2005-05-28

The original score for Gladiator was a grand triumph for composer Hans Zimmer. Unfortunatly, this cd follows a trend during the latter half of the 1990's. When you have a successful score cd, follow it up with a cd full of dialogue, demo tracks and occassional new music. That is what this cd is full off. I expected more of the great music from the movie, instead I was disappointed bitterly.

Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

The Same, Yet Pleasingly Different.......2006-05-20

`North' is the sophomore offering from Dana Point, CA punk/pop quintet Something Corporate. This album is everything the first album was, and conversely everything the first album was not. The music remains catchy and hook-laden, mostly built around the very capable musical and lyrical abilities of pianist/frontman Andrew McMahon. `North', however, is more sombre, more introspective, and more grown-up than `LTTW'. The lyrics tend to be more poignant and cynical, and the tone of the album is generally somewhat darker than their previous release - thanks in no small part to the fact that it was recorded during a dismal time of the year in Seattle. By no way does that mean the album is of lesser quality than the first - in fact, this is a much better body of work. The writing is much more intricate and mature, the lyrical lows are more gut-wrenching and the lyrical highs feed the soul much more than the first album. The songwriting talents of guitarist Josh Partington come more to the forefront as he contributes four tracks to the album including the first official single, "Space". In all, while the first album might be called a "fun" album or a "party" album, this is much more representative of the potential of the band, and should go a long way to segregating them from the slough of So-Cal "punk" knock-off bands that seem to be everywhere these days. That's not to say there aren't a couple of fist-pumpers on this one though - `Space' will be sure to be heard on dance floors across North America, and '21 & Invincible' is a cynical anthem to young adulthood. These are counterweighted with the lovely `Me And The Moon', a questioning look at mental breakdown spawned by an article McMahon read about a woman murdering her husband, and `Miss America', yet another lament for the intense stress that being on the road places on a relationship.

Having a decent producer in Jim Wirt has definitely paid dividends here - production quality on this album is better, much better than `Leaving Through The Window'. The musicianship has improved, and so has the vocal quality. This disc is everything I expected it to and to my pleasant surprise, much that I didn't expect it to be.

SoCo is still my favorite band and this album is definately wroth owning, it's just that leaving through the window is still my favorite. North just doesn't have the same charm.

Yet another example of an amazing band.......2006-02-11

When I first heard about this young Orange County-based group, I dismissed them as yet another SoCal pop punk act, but I was quickly proven wrong. Their use of piano dominates their music and creates a unique sound. Their most popular song to perform live just happens to be a 9 1/2 minute piano balled called "Konstantine" and despite the fact that this song was never released traditionally on any full Something Corporate album, it remains a favorite of most of the band's fans. The lyrics throughout their albums are poignant and it's obvious that the fans relate to them immensely. On their first album for Drive-Thru Records; "Leaving Through The Window" they discuss young love, girls with low self-esteem, high school grudges as well as many other typical teenage subjects of angst. But, on their follow up release "North" the band's growth as artists as well as as people is evident. With song topics ranging from a desperate houswife killing her husband ("Me and The Moon"), to growing up and moving on with your life ("21 and Invincible") this band secured its foothold as more than just another SoCal pop punk band. Something Corporate has bridged a gap between the traditional young pop-punk fans to college aged twenty-somethings and beyond. Even iconic 80s drummer Tommy Lee considers himself a fan.

This is my favorite CD of all time. It's very mellow and relaxing, but still upbeat. You can't beat SoCo!

Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Devendra Banhart's fourth album is his most pretty and accessible. It's lush, warm, and inviting. It's likely to make the uber-talented singer-songwriter new fans; unfortunately, it's just as likely to cost him a few old ones. The man is clearly a complex individual capable of visionary music that causes the listener to question many things, including whether or not the artist is putting him or her "on." As the moment-defining, awesome, and potentially self-parodic cover image implies, Mr. Banhart went to great lengths to enshroud himself with some of his most talented friends: Adam Forkner of White Rainbow, Andy Cabic of Vetiver, the free-folk band Feathers, and producer Thom Monahan among them. But this is no freak-fest; the album is subdued, and very much on an early `70s tip. Recorded at Bearsville near Woodstock, NY, there are touches of Gilberto Gil,! George Harrison, Donovan, T. Rex, Randy Newman and Bobby Charles.

The only thing missing is Devendra himself, to be perfectly honest. The man's a fabulous mimic, as is amply demonstrated throughout this expensive retro exercise. But Devendra's trilled and affected vocal delivery, gorgeously minimalist accompaniment and eccentric recording methods have all been toned down, or jettisoned entirely. As anyone who's seen him live is full aware, the man's capable of much more than his albums reveal, including Afro-funk jams. The finest songs on the sprawling Cripple-which is a fine album, to be sure--are the most simple and direct; "Hey Mama Wolf," for instance, is gorgeous, as are all the songs sung in Spanish. More than one song here is explicitly anti-war, making more than musical connections to the Vietnam era, as well as the present, of course: "I heard somebody say that the war ended today/ It's simple, we don't want to kill."Amen to that. -- James Conde

I am astounded by people who say that "Cripple Crow" sounds 'too slick' for them. This mulligan's stew of music is so unslick that I often get distracted by the disparity. Twenty-two songs with six in Spanish and lo-fi recording that sounds like it was recorded in the woods somewhere...slick is not the word. Mystical, intimate and enthralling would be my adjectives of choice, though. Devendra Banhart has crafted a delightfully trippy excursion into his strange little world of freak-folk, a rich world inter-woven with imagistic lyrics and a decidedly anti-war bent.

You'll hear echoes of everything from Bob Dylan, Solo Beatles Lennon, Harrison and McCartney and even a touch or two of Frank Zappa. Banhart is really fearless, musically. There isn't a genre inside his worldview that doesn't deserve trying out at least once, and if you miss listening to music that probably sounds better under a black light and something ingested (ok, I am over 40 and I admit it), "Cripple Crow" will suck you right into ecstasy. It's a total package, from the sitars and flutes inhabiting the songs to the homage to the 60's cover art. It's enough to give you faith in the underground music scene.

My sole problem with this CD is that I feel it could benefit from some pruning. There's just too many ingredients in the stewpot to make a coherent disc, and the constant use of "child" or "womb" as a lyrical fall-back gets tedious over the duration of the disc. (As does Banhart's singing, like when he tires to go for soulfulness or when he screeches the final note of "Some People Ride The Wave.") There are songs that are downright goofy ("Long Haired Child" and "Chinese Children") and simple songs of great beauty ("I Heard Somebody Say" and "Inaneil"). It is easy to get hypnotized by the atmosphere of "Cripple Crow," and Banhart is an eccentric with talent to burn. But for my money, any CD in 2005 willing to say "I heard somebody say that the war ended today...It's simple, we don't want to kill" is all right in my book.

Witchy Manfolk.......2007-01-20

Don't get it. Not only do none of these songs do anything for me, but I resent the Gil and Veloso comparisons. This dude, first of all, takes his Jesus look very seriously. Secondly, his voice is horrible. Every time there is a chance to be soulful, important in American Roots music, Banhart wimps out and instead sings from some drugged-out self indulgent caldron. Thirdly, there are to many "womb" references for my comfort and they are all weird. He has nothing to say, no real ideas in the music. The "sound" doesn't explore any new territory and just comes off cramped and trite.

Not his best, but a great place to start.......2007-01-07

Devendra Banhart is among the artists who were tagged as being part of the neo-folk revival that was all over the independent music press a few years ago. Thankfully, "freak folk" is much less of a buzz word right now, so anyone finding this music for the first time is most likely curious because they have a genuine interest, rather than because of some external pressure.

That having been said, Cripple Crow is a great album by a great artist and I would strongly recommend it to anyone new to Devendra Banhart. There's more emphasis on fun, catchy tunes and an easy-going hippie aesthetic here than on some of his earlier albums (tropicalia is a big influence) - more variety, too. In some ways, that detracts from the music's ability to draw the listener in, but it also makes Cripple Crow a joy to hear over and over again. In fact, I've enjoyed this album more and more on successive listens, a phenomenon that I don't often experience.

And the songs are really wonderful - I tend to listen to Cripple Crow for individual songs rather than as a cohesive whole. "Now that I Know", "Santa Maria de la Feira", "Heard Somebody Say", "Quedate Luna", "I Feel Just like A Child", "Dragonflies", "Cripple Crow", "Hey Mama Wolf", "Little Boys", and "Anchor" are all highlights. Buy it, try it, give it a chance.

Another reviewer praised a song on this record for McCartneyesque-whatever. Its 2006, D.B is a star now, and Paul McCartney doesn't really have new output thats interesting for anyone outside of the VFW bluehaired crowd. Cripple Crow, believe me I know, is brilliant in every conceivable way, even in making reviewers who dont like it realize what sad pathetic lives they have sitting around listening to 70 year olds who had their glory in 1960 and retired and old 28Special vinyls or whoever that is. Cripple Crow isnt for the fans of has beens but rather fresh and really truly more genuinally psychedelic than any crap from some retired old guy sir mccartsaschmuck could ever make even in his prime, who was a beatle...and Banhart doesnt need Beetles or wings or some kinda concept hogwash "band". When the whole "band is the guys name...thats like when the band isn't the star but the guy whose name provides the name of said band...like really great this is like great. Believe me i know. Its nothing like paul whateverhisname is, or some worn out old crap, or the geriatric stones who everyone goes around saying "ooooo, the new one rocks!!!" Like yeah, rocks like mullet and bic lighter concert crowd "wow ma, kickass. can i get a mullet too like your loser alcoholic boyfriend?!!!"-rocks. If a movie was made that needded the good stuff we'de want this, not the easy rider soundtrack, like its silly. This is good and was recorded by someone young and fresh with new ideas. Dont listen to fools just buy it. Trust me im good and listen to music thats really good. Im from L.A. too and still dont say "ooooo it reminded me of the melodious solo wrok of Paul mccart-who? or worse yet Brian wilson. Plllllleeeease. So darn good.

I've seen north mississippi allstars live a few times the best being memphis in may 2005 during sunset on the missippi river. I got electric blue watermelon first, really loved it for a couple of times but then ran across 51 phantom later on. man that one is way more heavy down south blues, and had less of the silliar songs. ( didn't like hurry up sunrise, or stompin' my feet, or deep blue sea,) the rest were ok.

to wrap it up, move onto polaris or 51 phantom, or even shake hands with shorty, or polaris

Probably one of my favorite CD's of all time. North Mississipi Allstars never disappoint and this CD is no exception. It's a shame more people don't appreciate this kind of music because THIS is talent. Most of the crap you hear on the radio is over produced garbage (Paris Hilton has a cd? seriously?!). But this just makes me realize that there ARE real musicians out there and that some people DO get it. Buy it...you WILL NOT be disappointed!

Not what we expected but great anyway.......2007-02-04

I've been a NMA fan since they started playing the Library in Oxford, MS (btw its right next to Proud Larrys where RL Burnside played too). And like you I expected NMA to stick with the hill country blues sound that got them where they are, but I shouldnt have. These guys have enough talent to branch out and still be true to the blues but break new ground. They tried to do that with Polaris but failed, but they nailed it this time. A song doesnt have to have a standard blues progression to be the blues. Blues is a state of mind and a feeling, and this CD has it! I look for great things from this band for years to come.

Despite the fact that no one ever finds it "helpful" to post a negative review, I could not hold back. This is a horrible album. I fell in love with NMA when they performed on Conan (so long ago) and I rushed out to buy "Shake Hands with Shorty." To this day it is still one of my favorite albums, played constantly. I haven't heard anything since, until I got this CD, and I've got to wonder if I'm even listening to the same band.

I should have known better, I suppose. The crowded cover artwork is a pretty good indication of what's to come--an eclectic mishmash that hits on no other levels than being an eclectic mishmash. The real charm of this band had been their authentic simplicity, and thanks to it, a dirty swamp sound that effused their tracks. Frankly, it was a good, honest sound, something seriously lacking in today's music scene. All the guests on this album serve to simply water down and dilute that sound to something devoid of heart, but easier to swallow, I suppose.

It starts off just fine with "Mississippi Boll Weevil," a stomping swamp song if there ever was one, but it's a misleading lead off track. "No Mo" has to be one of the worst listening experiences I've ever endured... and that was only the second track. I listened on in vain hopes that it would get better, and it doesn't. Yes, Lucinda Williams is here, but one track is not enough to save an album.

It's sad to say that NMA are more of a jam band than a blues band these days. If one wants to excuse these musical dalliances on Electric Blue Watermelon as experiments in genre expansion, so be it, but they'll have to be recognized as failed experiments.

NOT Rejoicing in My Ears.......2007-04-03

I put "Rejoicing in the Hands" on my Wish List based on Banhart's faithful instrumental rendition of John Fahey's `Sligo River Blues' on the "I am the Resurrection" Fahey Tribute disc. After all, it came recommended by Amazon.

On that tune, Banhart displayed great technical guitar-playing skill. So I thought I'd get more of the same if I got "Rejoicing in the Hands," recommended by Amazon.

When it arrived, I eagerly unwrapped the CD and put it on the player. What came out the speakers was definitely not what I expected.

A man was singing with an acoustic guitar accompanyment. I had a difficult time making out the lyrics because of Banhart's whiny nasal vocal style. He sounded like the musical love child of Leon Redbone and Neil Young.

I tried to look up the written lyrics on the CD liner notes, but they were scrawled in an almost unreadable `artsy' calligraphic style like what Dave the Stoner used to draw when he was into his second doobie.

Alas, there was only one instrumental, which was good. So I ripped that to my mp3 player. The vocal tracks I left on the disc, unable and unwilling to decipher Banhart's cryptic and mumbled vocals.

This new genre of freak folk is great. Though, ALL folk is great. The guitar is amazing. He is the best. If you like folk you will LOVE this. The minute i listened to it I was stunned. GREAT ALBUM. Also get Nick Drake if you like the guitar for this.

if you are at all familiar with karen dalton (you should be if not, b/c she's amazing), you will draw comparisons to devendra with her. i find that this album really reminds me of a mixture of karen, vashti bunyan, and a dash of jack white. it's a summer album, hell, it's an all-year-round album, but when i listen to this, i feel like chewing on the end of a long, sun-dried weed while walking barefoot at sundown in late august in my original northern wisconsin digs. that is this album. and all affectedness aside, devendra's voice is just plain gritty and lovely and wonderful, along with his original song-writing and musicianship.

I didn't think I'd be into this, but it turns out I was wrong. At first glance he seems kinda gimmicky in that precious, indie kinda way, but once I actually listened to Devendra Banhart...well his music is really amazing. His lyrics are sometimes playful, sometimes sad and always surreal, and his voice is one of a kind. The songs are simple, short and mostly recorded solo with acoustic guitar, though electric guitar, percussion and the occasional understated horn or string is thrown into the mix perfectly. Devendra Banhart released another album, Nino Rojo, within a few months of this one. Both albums are very similar in sound and style (they come from the same recording session) and both have a uniform good-to-great song quality. I reccomend you buy them both and if you're not won over immediately just relax, keep listening and don't analyze things so much.
