Album Description
Country music's First Couple, Johnny Cash and June Carter began making beautiful music together in 1961, when she began touring with "The Man in Black." Born into one of America's great musical families in the 1920s, the Carter Family (comprising June's mother, the influential guitarist Maybelle, and her aunt and uncle, Sarah and A.P.) helped create the musical template still at work in bluegrass, "traditional" country, and some forms of folk. June made a name for herself by co-writing the huge hit 'Ring of Fire'. A Johnny Cash signature song, it topped Billboard's Country chart for seven weeks in 1963, cracking the Pop Top Twenty, as well. Contains the classics 'Jackson', and 'It Ain't Me, Babe'. Columbia. 2006.

The Ultimate Celebration of Johnny & June's Love.......2006-04-21
"Duets" is an enjoyable compilation of the songs Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash sang together. As would be expected from a duets disc, the romance factor is high. There is a noticeable absence of songs about murder, incarceration or redemption. June brings out the lighter side of the Man in Black. If you've always wanted to get your lady friend interested in Johnny Cash, here's the disc to play. At times, the treatment is a bit corny. The 1970's symphony orchestra and background vocals negatively date some of the songs. The stripped down arrangements make for the most powerful interpretations. Despite the cheesy treatment of some tunes, it's still Johnny and June. They had beautiful voices and they sang good songs. It would be difficult to hear this compilation and not feel good. The "Walk the Line" film made the world more aware of the great relationship between June and the Man in Black. While "Carryin' On With Johnny Cash & June Carter" features additional June and Johnny tunes, "Duets" is the ultimate musical celebration of their love.

In response to comments posted by the reviewer above "Delite Rancher":
Not sure what you've been examining during your 'closer inspection' but I'd suggest that you might want to closely inspect the track listings for these discs again. I see a great deal of overlapping.
Still a great album, certainly worthy of 5 stars, but I stand behind what I wrote earlier. Get one -or the other- but ya don't need both. Unless you're a completist. Period. End of discussion. 'Nuff said.

Give credit where due.......2004-10-12
I am a big fan of trent reznors, the song "hurt" has been attempted to be remade by several but cash is the only one i found fitting. its also cool that sevendust covered it as an acoustic tribute to the late Cash and even put it in their acoustic CD/DVD. but reading the credits like i always do, neither Reznor or Nothing Records were mentioned. alot of people i have encountered didnt even realize it was a NIN song. i fully support interpreting music into different angles and the remake done by Cash is outsanding, but please give credit where credit is due. Trent Reznor is a talented artist and deserves recognition too.
VIDEO TRACK OF 'HURT' ONLY PLAYS ON PC'S (QUICKTIME)!!!!.......2004-01-28
Firstly, the 'enhanced cd' only works WITH QUICKTIME ON PERSONAL COMPUTERS!!! The Quicktime software is loaded with the video, just place the CD in your CD-ROM drive and follow install instructions. When I first purchased this CD, I was dumbstruck when I tried to play the 'video' track on my GE DVD Player and realized the enhanced CD was just that -- NOT DVD FORMATTED. Having led off with that admonition, the CD is stunning, despite the short, four track length. 'Wichita Lineman', track three, is worth the purchase price alone. The production values on this track are simple, clean, and piercing. 'Personal Jesus', an old Depeche Mode standard, is a good cut also. And of course, as a double whammy, there is the audio track of 'Hurt' (Track 1) and track four, the Quicktime Video version of 'Hurt'. You will not be sorry to buy this 'enhanced CD'. For those desiring the DVD version, check out American Records (Lost Highway) version of 'Hurt'. God Bless Johnny Cash and his work - we miss you.
Happy Listening,
Will
Must make Reznor proud...........2004-01-17
I can imagine the great honor that Trent Reznor must feel...having his beautiful song covered by one of the most sincere artists in music history. I am not the biggest country fan in the universe- yet I have an appreciation for artist such as Cash and Nelson. I am a fan of Nine Inch Nails and can say that Cash has captured the organic nature of the song and has sung it as if his own. It is sad and beautiful and a masterwork.
Personal Jesus makes me laugh. I do not mean this in a bad way..I'm sure that it wasn't intended to be a humorous tune...it just comes across that way for me. I just never would have imagined Cash covering it...(and it makes me think of the 80's).
However, I like the song very much.
Lineman is beautiful...haunting...makes me think of the west..the sunset...everything that brought allure to "the man in black".
Music is great; enhanced video didn't work on G.E. DVD Playe.......2004-01-13
'Wichita Lineman' is awesome, if not for its' production value alone. 'Hurt' and 'Personal Jesus' are great also. Unfortunately, I bought this CD almost solely for the enhanced 'video' of 'Hurt'. It never worked on my GE brand DVD Player which is supposed to play anything except CDR, CDR-W and Laserdics. This was a tremendous dissapointment - I was mesmerized the first time I saw the video on CMT. Be well informed as to the limitations of your DVD Player if you wish to view the 'video'. If anyone has any idea why this enhanced video wouldn't play (neither video or audio tracks) , drop a line in a review for this CD.

On first thought, the idea of the Man in Black recording such covers as "Bridge over Troubled Water," "Danny Boy," and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" might seem odd, even for an artist who's been able to put his personal stamp on just about everything. But American IV: The Man Comes Around, which also draws on Cash's original songs as well as those by Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt"), Sting ("I Hung My Head"), and Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus"), may be one of the most autobiographical albums of the 70-year-old singer-songwriter's career. Nearly every tune seems chosen to afford the ailing giant of popular music a chance to reflect on his life, and look ahead to what's around the corner. From the opening track--Cash's own "The Man Comes Around," filled with frightening images of Armageddon--the album, produced by Rick Rubin, advances a quiet power and pathos, built around spare arrangements and unflinching honesty in performance and subject. In 15 songs, Cash moves through dark, haunted meditations on death and destruction, poignant farewells, testaments to everlasting love, and hopeful salutes to redemption. He sounds as if he means every word, his baritone-bass, frequently frayed and ravaged, taking on a weary beauty. By the time he gets to the Beatles' "In My Life," you'll very nearly cry. Go ahead. He sounds as if he's about to, too. Unforgettable. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:
My favorite Johnny Cash cd .......2007-07-04
I honestly can't say I like country music. I just don't care for most of the genre. The only artist from this genre that I do listen to is Johnny Cash. Of all of the American recordings Johnny has worked on with record producer Rick Rubin, American IV: The Man Comes Around" is easily my personal favorite. As much as I like Johnny's last album American V, I just didn't think the material held up as well as the fourth volume.
What I love about American IV: The Man Comes Around is the sparse, haunting melodies that lingers through out the album. Secondly I love Johnny's deep baritone vocals on this cd especially on his covers of "Hurt" and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". One of my personal favorite tracks is Johnny's cover of the Nine Inch Nails' track "Hurt". The emotions he puts into the song really moved me. I also loved the Sting song "I Hung My Head". Johnny does a great job at storytelling through this song. His voice is so warm and deep on this track. Johnny's duet with Nick Cave on the Hank Williams' classic "I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry" is absolutely stunning. Both men really compliment each other with their own deep vocals.
While I do like Johnny's other American recordings, they weren't as perfect to me as American IV: The Man Comes Around is. I can listen to this cd without skipping a single track.
Johnny Cash is classic. .......2007-06-26
I popped this CD in on the way to Vegas from Los Angeles in the middle of the night. Johnny's haunting voice came booming through the speakers like a soundtrack to the desert. Full of stories and vivid descriptions this CD cant be described as anything less than epic. Moving along like a Steam Train up hill the music gains momentum and impresses more with each bar sung. If youre looking for a little dark night, outlaw country Johnny Cash's American IV: The Man Comes Around is just what you need.
Best of the American Series.......2007-06-26
I've got the last two American series recordings that Johnny Cash did and this one is way better than his last. I love them both, but if you have neither, get this one first. His cover of "Hurt" is outstanding. You can see the video on YouTube of both his cover and the original by Nine Inch Nails. It's amazing just how much better he does this song, its as if it was written just for him.
Note: I am not generally a Country Western fan, and yet this series hits a strong note in me.
this CD turned me into a Johny cash fan..........2007-06-08
Ive never really was into country music, but last week Ive bought 2 Cash CD's . One of them, the American V , is an instant pleasure, no need to adjust. Its WARM, acoustic, filling, emotional, calm. Great CD!
American IV : The Man Comes Around.......2007-05-12
I have always liked Johnny Cash but had none of his CDs. This CD shows the difference between a performer and an artist. This CD is true art. The whole Cd has a very deep message, if you listen and then think of what Johnny is saying. The 1st song "The Man Comes Around" is maybe the BEST SONG I HAVE EVER HEARD, but certainly one of the best.

Caveat Emptor.......2006-08-22
Buyer beware
This may a great CD. However, the CD you'll receive will probably differ from the one depicted here in the track listing.
The cover and title are identical. But I still haven't (as of August 21, 2006) found the CD listed here (with Folsom Prison Blues as the first track). Instead, I have received (on two occasions) received a different CD with "Hey Porter" as the first track
An excellent compilation despite an obvious omission.......2004-09-18
No Johnny Cash compilation can ever include everything but this collection contains all the essentials from the fifties and sixties, his most productive period that yielded classic songs such as Hey porter, I walk the line, Big river, Don't take your guns to town, Five feet high and rising, I still miss someone, Ring of fire, Understand your man, It ain't me babe (with June Carter Cash), Orange blossom special, Jackson (with June Carter Cash) and A boy named Sue. All these songs and many others are included here.
The fifties and sixties take up the whole of the first CD and almost half of the second CD so, inevitably, there isn't a lot of room for his later music. Even so, the omission of A thing called love (a top five pop hit in Britain and also a big hit in America) will surprise some people. Of the seventies songs included here, the best is One piece at a time, an amusing song about assembling a car from stolen car parts.
Another feature of this compilation is the number of guests including Bob Dylan (Girl from the north country), Marty Robbins (Song of the patriot), Waylon Jennings (The night Hank Williams came to town) and U2 (The wanderer). On Highwaymen, Johnny is joined by Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, who recorded three albums together as the Highwaymen. This name was originally used by a sixties folk group (famous for Michael row the boat ashore) and sometimes causes confusion.
This compilation is based on another double CD (Essential) with four tracks added - So doggone lonesome, Daddy sang bass, Forty shades of green and Man in white.
Despite the omission of A thing called love, this is an excellent collection of Johnny's music.

That's Enough!!!.......2002-08-08
My dad had this record while I was growing up. It was one of only two or three that I was allowed to put on the turntable myself. I listened to it all the the time. At about age 8 or 9 I started getting into Rock n Roll (the Beatles, Beach Boys, Who, etc.) and this record kinda just disappeared from the the stack of records we had. I hadn't heard this record for over 30 years. I recently found this compilation on Amazon and ordered it immediatley. I could'nt believe how much I've missed these tunes. 'Run Softly Blue River' sounds so beautiful still. That opening 'C' note on the electric guitar still makes me cringe. It was Johnny's guitar player ( I think it's Luther Perkins on this one) that turned me on to Rock players like George Harrison and Keith Richards. And Johnny's voice...........Oh my god, WHAT A VOICE!!! For me, this record is where it all started. My love for Rock n Roll music started here. Say what you may, but this is an early Rock n Roll record. I highly recommend this one.
From the song 'That's Enough': "(I've got) I've got Jesus(Johnny) and that's enough (that's enough) THAT'S ENOUGH!!!
The Fabulous Soil.......2000-03-11
I'm delighted that those two are finally on CD together. These are the first two albums JC released at Columbia in 1958/59 and still two greatest ones alongside BItter Tears and Unchained. Some Jimmie Rodgers and Tex Ritter spirits on it and this CD is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you wanna start your J. R. Cash collection
Excellent Songs.......1999-07-23
Songs of our Soul is one of the earliest Columbia albums that Johnny did after leaving Sun Records. I have it on vinyl, and there are some absolute though rarely heard classics such as Hank and Joe and me, Drink to me, Great Speckled Bird etc. If you like Johnny, and you like that old time country style with the Jordanires-type background singers, this one is for you.

Customer Reviews:
A frequently overlooked period in his career.......2003-10-04
Johnny Cash recorded five albums for Mercury between 1987 and 1991 including one album of re-recorded oldies (Classic Cash) and four standard albums, these being Johnny Cash is coming to town, Water from the wells of home (an album featuring many guests), Boom chicka boom and Mystery of life. Those albums were of a high quality and could be described as typical of his normal musical style, but they did not capture the public imagination.
Johnny Cash is coming to town and Boom chicka boom have been re-issued as a twofer in America. I loved both of them first time round. Among the tracks from those two albums included here are Sixteen tons (the Tennessee Ernie Ford classic), Cats in the cradle (the Harry Chapin classic), W Lee O'Daniel and A backstage pass to a Willie Nelson show.
Water from the wells of home (also re-issued in America, but on its own) is represented by That old wheel (with Hank Williams Junior), Sweeter than the flowers (with Waylon Jennings), As long as I live (with Emmylou Harris) and Call me the breeze (with his son).
The final album, The Mystery of life, has also been re-issued in America on its own and is represented by four tracks including Beans for breakfast and a cover of the Bob Dylan song, Wanted man.
The Classic Cash album (not re-issued) is represented by just two tracks, possibly reflecting public disapproval of re-recorded hits, yet the 1988 version of Don't take your guns to town, which closes this set, makes a nice change from the original and works well.
Johnny's spell on Mercury was not his most successful but here is a selection of tracks from those five albums to remind us that Johnny recorded some great music back then.
