JUST ANOTHER GREAT BUY FROM AMAZON...BRINGS BACK LOTS OF OLD MEMORIES...DEFINITE PLUS TO MY MUSIC COLLECTION
Superb!.......2007-07-03
What a beautiful collection of songs. To have them remastered so they are crisp and clear is wonderful! I find it so enjoyable to listen to as I'm driving. You can't go wrong with this CD.
Carly Simon: Touched By The Sun.....Goddess.......2007-07-01
Wow, what a great talent she is. Has thirtysome years really slipped by since I first bought the Anticipation songbook? (which I still own in mint condition I'm proud to say). This CD collection is the holly grail of Carly's work and a must have for those who "dig" (thanks Murray The K) her sound. Most everything's here on the CD which includes some truely great pictures on Carly, some which I've never seen before. Man, did she have the sexist album covers or what? Carly TRUELY ENJOYS being a woman more than any woman I have met or seen. This fact comes through in her photos like a sledgehammer. We need more woman like her! All in all a great package and a real keeper. Please buy one.
If you're only getting ONE............2007-06-16
My wife has accused me of having a crush on Carly. At least I'm not fool enough to deny it. Carly has been called the voice of my generation, and she is [along with Carole King].
This album is an hour and nineteen minutes of a pure, joy-filled journey over about thirty years, delivered in pretty much chronological order. All, or at least most, of your favorites are here. No point in discussing individual tracks; if you're reading this, you probably have them memorized. It's a good thing that "Better Not Tell Her" is not about me.
I have all of Carly's records. Not everybody will care to. Sad. If you only want one, start here. You will probly get hooked, and want them all.[Unfortunately, a couple are tough to find]. Carly's voice has actually improved with time, and every girl should be lucky enough to have her looks at 60. Essential album.
Carly's Best.......2007-06-14
A second copy of my favorite Carly cd for the car!

This second greatest hits collection serves up the band's classic mid- '60s period, capped off by the death of Brian Jones for whom this collection is dedicated. Having made their breakthrough with hits that challenged the status quo, the Stones were in no mood to calm down. The insistent chaos of "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" "Jumping Jack Flash," and "Street Fighting Man" display the Stones at their most powerful, while "Dandelion" and "She's a Rainbow" are the Stones succeeding with psychedelia. "Paint It, Black" and "Ruby Tuesday" strike a perfect balance. A decent introduction to an essential period of Stones music. --Rob O'Connor

essential!.......2007-06-15
The Stones in the 60s....awesome classic rock and roll. If you don't feel like spending forty bucks on the extensive Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks collections then this is the one to go with. Every single song is a winner!
An essential Stones "best of".......2006-09-23
If you're new to the Stones then this would be a good place to start. After listening to this you'll be ready to listen to some of their other later 60's albums to hear some deeper cuts.
Remaster Worth It.......2006-03-11
Another reviewer, "exileonmainst" has questioned the value in the remastering on the Stones' ABKCO releases. Take it from me, since I actually own this CD. I replaced my old cds with the new remasters, and I can assure you that the remastered versions are FAR SUPERIOR to the old releases, and I do not own an SACD compatable cd player. ABKCO's previous releases have been remixed, making the track less muddy sounding at high volume. The level of clarity is amazing, and the mixes have been opened up to allow for a fuller sound. Definately worth the price of the new CD.
Review for Rolling Stones Big Hits vol2.......2006-02-01
This record is one I love best.I had it in vinil (L.P.).Some of the tracks like Honky Tonky Woman and Street Fighting man are not available in the others R.S. compact dics.Besides this record has another layer for super audio c.d. which is very good.
Speak of me as you find.......2005-11-15
When I was about 13 years old I purchased this lp. It was packaged in an octogon cutout jacket. I'll bet it's worth a fortune today. I have no idea what happened to it. This CD is a great trip down memory lane and it also serves up the great singles Jumpin' Jack Flash and Honky Tonk Women. Since I already owned Jump Back I decided to pick this up along with High Tide and Green Grass Volume I. I already own the SACD releases of Let It Bleed and Begger's Banquet so I don't really need the Hot Rocks set. I think this is a better way to go because it "frames" the era.
Enough of that. Through the Past Darkly is almost perfect. The SACD sound is truly amazing, you REALLY will hear things that were previously buried in the lack of fidelity of the Lp release and the original Analog to Digital CD release.
The track selection is great save for one. I'd forgotten how truly ridiculous She's a Rainbow sounds. I just have to laugh at it. The background vocals actually remind of of some of the vocals from Zappa's We're Only in it for the Money. - you know, the vocal tracks where Zappa would speed up Ray Collins voice? It sounds like a bunch of stoned munchkins! This was psychodelic? Oh brother! At first I cringed and winced but then just decided to just laugh at it. It's good fun.
Ruby Tuesday is a very nice treat on this release. You can actually hear the horse hair of the cello bow moving across the strings! Even on a plain ol' CD player!
If you don't own Beggar's Banquet you can hear the terrific Street Fighting Man mix here. I just love that wild ending with the strings, sitar, and the pentatonic piano notes floating above it all. And the drum on the intro to this song... Charlie Watts must be playing the biggest bass drum available. It sounds massive! Ba-Boom!
All of these tracks will sound fresh and new, Mother's Little Helper, Paint it Black, Have You Seen Your Mother? Let's Spend the Night Together - I really am hearing all kinds of new things in the mix. At times it's as if you are standing right in the middle of the session. I love it.
If you want a very good late 60's Stone Collection , this is it. Again, I would go with the SACD releases of High Tide and Green Grass and Through the Past Darkly rather than Hotrocks. Why? Because once you hear these you are going to run right out and buy Beggar's Banquet and Let it Bleed which are must have Stones releases.
Go for it!
Postscript: Ok. I admit it. Two weeks later and She's a Rainbow sounds great, even with the stoned munchkins singing the ooo-la-la-la ooo-la-la-la-laaaaaa in the background. She's a Rainbow is actually a very interesting artifact of the late 60's!

The U.S. Version Rules!.......2005-09-28
Back in the day we never considered this anything but another Stones album, and not a boring hits album. Most of the songs were available nowhere else. Through the Past Darkly in its U.S. version just burns the house down. The toned down Euro vynl just isn't the same without Paint it Black & Have You seen Your Mother Baby, Standing in the Shadow?! That combo of songs on the cracked glass octagonal bright blue album is magic, and anything else just isn't the same. The Original Stereo mix on a virgin vintage original London vynl lp is the best sounding too! I'm just not too excited about remixes and bonus cuts; this piece of perfection is best left alone. If you must have a cd; burn it from clean vynl!
Differences Between This U.S. Release And The U.K. Release.......2002-09-08
This is the remastered September 12, 1969 - U.S. London release that was dedicated to Brian Jones. This US version covered their American hits from 1966-1969. Here are the songs on this album, in the order they were released as singles in the U.S.:
5-6-66 Paint It, Black
7-1-66 Mother's Little Helper
9-23-66 Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?
1-13-67 Ruby Tuesday
1-13-67 Let's Spend The Night Together (B side of Ruby Tuesday)
8-18-67 Dandelion
12-22-67 She's A Rainbow
12-22-67 2000 Light Years From Home (B side of She's A Rainbow)
5-31-68 Jumpin' Jack Flash
8-30-68 Street Fighting Man
7-3-69 Honky Tonk Woman
For some reason the album did not include the US single release of In Another Land or We Love You (the B side of Dandelion).
All the songs on this album are different from those that appear on the 1st compilation album Big Hits (High Tide & Green Grass).
This album is different from the album released by U.K. Decca the same day. There were 2 tracks that were not included on each release. Here are the differences:
U.S. London release included:
.....Paint It, Black
.....Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?
U.K. Decca release included:
.....We Love You
.....You Better Move On
At the time of the release, it was the only album that included the following tracks:
In the U.S.:
.....Jumpin' Jack Flash
.....Mother's Little Helper
.....Dandelion
.....Honky Tonk Women
.....Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?
In the U.K.:
.....Jumpin' Jack Flash
.....Let's Spend The Night Together
.....We Love You
.....Ruby Tuesday
.....Dandelion
.....Sittin' On A Fence
.....Honky Tonk Women
This information comes from "It's Only Rock And Roll: The Ultimate Guide To The Rolling Stones" by Karnbach and Bernson and from my own collection.
THE ORIGINAL STORY.......2002-04-08
A lot of confused or too young reviewers around. This is truly one of the best records you can buy if you want the Stones rolling with powerful raw songs, and sophisticated exercises that certainly were very progressive at the time and still are deligthful now. WHAT IS THIS DVD THEN ? IT IS NOT a DVD of an original vinyl, and neither a recopilation of songs now made from several old records.
The reviewer from Warsaw got it rigth. In september 1969 I bought a strange vinyl record, my first adventure in the Stones, which came in a strange octogonal casing, and had the picture you get in the CD now. Almost all the songs you get in this CD were there, in the original record by Decca (which by the way I lost in the 80's. Anybody out there can help?).
So then if you love the Stones, get the record straigth. Then buy this DVD. It is an outstanding representation of the classic Stones...................
Through The Past, Darker.......2002-04-04
Essential for anybody who, like me, listened to the vinyl Decca version, and admired it's strange octagonal sleeve. I don't remember whether it was actually the first Stones record I listened to, but it sure was the first I had in my hands. I'd give it 5 stars if only there were the original line-up of songs with tongue-in-cheek lyrical "You Better Move On" and splendid "We Love You" and "Sitting On The Fence" instead of "Paint It, Black" and "Have You Seen Your Mother...". In the Decca version the band's portfolio sounded more versatile. It is a shame there's no collector's item state-of-art compact disc replica of that one! Thus, the past grows darker and darker.
Forget HOT ROCKS.......2001-12-11
Get Big Hits (High Tides and Green Grass) and Thru The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol II).
Thru the Past... has "She's A Rinbow" and "Dandelion" AND "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Honky Tonk Women".
Okay, HOT ROCKS has "Brown Sugar", "Wild Horses", "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Sympathy for the Devil", but you own BEGGARS BANQUET, LET IT BLEED and STICKY FINGERS all ready, don't ya?
