Few bands of the 1960s retained as much a sense of the roots of rock and roll as did Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music is rife with country, rockabilly, and R&B influences, a combination that produced several hit singles--most of which are present on this collection. These include "I Heard It through the Grapevine," "Lodi," "Up Around the B ," "Who'll Stop the Rain," and of course "Bad Moon Rising." This is an excellent greatest-hits collection, and a perfect introduction to the music of a band that has been enduringly influential. --Genevieve Williams

CCR.......2007-06-28
An excellent greatist hits CD, I used a handful of songs to burn a CD with other related style of music.
great stuff.......2007-06-27
listening to this CD makes you realize how great john fogerty was back in the day. great songs, great sound.
Gets me going in the morning.......2007-06-27
I've been listening to this CD for 2 weeks in my car on the way to work.
Soundtrack of an era.......2007-06-15
This is an excellent compilation of CCR's tunes from the late 60s, early 70s. There's a reason why Credence tunes kept popping up in movies and commercials. It's great music and evocative of the era from which it comes. No need for me to review the individual tunes; anybody with a radio has head most of them. A must-have for any music fan.
Fogerty.......2007-06-10
Great value. If you are into the 60s' and 70s' you will love this one.

Customer Reviews:
Good collection!.......2007-06-03
This is an excellent collection of country hits, especially for those of us who grew up during this time-period. This collection may not be suitable for serious country music fans, but it does provide and excellent selection of music by lead performers from the 1950s through the 1970s for those of us who appreciate Country-Western music. I was very pleased to find several songs I remember from my youth, including: "The Battle of New Orleans," "El Paso," "Six Days on the Road," "King of the Road," "Flowers on the Wall," "Big Bad John," "The Three Bells," "Ring of Fire" (I was a big Johnny Cash fan as a kid), "Ode to Billy Joe," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "Rhinestone Cowboy," "The Most Beautiful Girl," "Convoy" (yes, I had a CB radio), "The Gambler, and others.
Check out the other songs on the title list to see if you remember these. The collection comes with 3 CDs, one for each decade. The sound quality is good, too.
Legends of Country Music:Classic Hits of the 50's,60's&70's.......2007-05-09
If you like country music from this era it is a good sample. Many top ten hits.
Wonderful old songs remembered.......2007-01-18
My Parents and my Sister are all enjoying these songs from the days when we remembered Country Legends. This CD Collection is tremendous... has all of the greats on it. Highly recommend it to anyone wanting to hear the good "old" songs.
I can't believe how many great songs are on this set.......2006-12-16
I bought this for my Dad for Christmas, but I can't wait to borrow it. My jaw dropped as I read the song list for this set. While a few don't really fit (When You're Hot, You're Hot???), the set is filled with some of the best songs ever to be played on country radio.
I hope there's a Volume II.
GREATS HITS. HECK - EVEN THE MISSES ARE GOOD!!.......2006-12-13
Growing up in the '50s and '60s, I remember the songs on this set very well. This is a good review of one off hits like the Browns "Three Bells" (I couldn't stand that song as a kid but kind of enjoy it now), the Statler Brothers' "Flowers on the Wall",Floyd Cramer's "Last Date", "Detroit (I want to go home)", "Abilene", "El Paso" (notice the city name theme), and a host of others. All the major players are represented, Johnny Horton (Battle of New Orleans), Hank Snow (Movin' On), Patsy Cline (I Fall to Pieces), Johnny Cash (Ring of Fire), on and on and on. However, its for the more obscure hits that you should purchase this set. A great overview of the period. Hey, I discovered that Webb Pierce was a real rockin' musician!! Bet many of you didn't know that either!! The most interesting stuff is the '50s and '60s. The '70s goes into the Willie and Waylon (and similar artists)thing which you probably have on other collections. However, the sound quality is great and the early stuff fantastic!! If you like country music, buy it!! If you like country music and want to drive someone crazy who does not like traditional country, buy it BIG TIME!!

Customer Reviews:
The family tradition is strong here.......2004-10-12
Hank's has always shown the influence of his father while being distinct from it. The influence is most obvious in the many covers of his father's songs (albeit done in Junior's own style) and the many songs that are, in one way or other, about his father. On this album, the family influence is stronger than ever. There are covers of Kaw-liga and Move it on over, while there are two songs about his father - The blues man and If you don't like Hank Williams. His father also gets mentioned in Dinosaur.
All those tracks are great but the standout track here is the title track, a superb ballad about how some old habits can be broken more easily than others. Here I am again and Won't it be nice are other excellent ballads. Hank gets on his soapbox in The American way. Hank sings about the south (as he often does) in All in Alabama.
This is yet another classic album from Hank, mixing country, blues and rock in his own unique way.
Best Album.......2003-04-25
This album in my opinion is one of Hank's best. The song "Old Habits" is one of my all time fanorite Hank songs. "Dinosaur" is right next to it. You can't go wrong by buying it. The whole album is great it tells alot about Hank and how he thinks about things. This has to be the appitomy of hank's albums.
This is the real Hank Williams Jr in my opinion.......2003-01-09
It just shows how great he can sing country music when he leaves the rock guitar out. He's good both ways but great this way. I recommend everybody whos a fan of him or country music buy this. Also if you liked the movie Living Proof: The Hank Williams Jr Story and you loved the songs that played in the background then you'll really love it cause its got three songs from the movie on it. 1. Here I am Fallin' Again 2. The Blues Man 3. All in Alabama. All great songs Its simply a GREAT album.
HANK IS THE MAN.......2002-07-14
this is an awsome album.my favorite song is ALL IN ALABAMA.there are no bad songs on this(A HABIT HANK HAS BEEN IN).alot of feeling went into this album.BUY IT,HEAR IT,LOVE IT. its that simple.thanx hank.
The old stuff.......2002-06-21

whiskey bent & hell bound.......2007-02-24
I real enjoyed listening to this cd. There wasnt one song that I didnt like. If you like hank williams jr. you will like this cd.
Pure Hank.......2005-08-02
This is pure Hank from the days when we all didn't have to worry about being politically correct. It's an oldie but a goodie.
Hank The Great.......2005-03-29
There ain't much to talk about if you'll talk about Hank. His sound is unique and matchless, and this album is one of his diamonds.Listening to this album I can almost see myself in a trashy bar sippin' from my glass of Old Jack. Yeeeowww!! Pure and outlaw country! just the way it should always be.
Great Album!!.......2004-06-10
This is where Hank really starts coming true to form as we know him today! Family tradition was a good album but this one is great! Filled with great hits, any Hank fan will truly appreciate this album which includes Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, O.D.'d in Denver, etc.
Vintage Hank from 1979.......2004-03-31
While Kenny Rogers (of whom I am also a huge fan) was dominating the commercial aspect of country music with songs such as The Gambler and She believes in me, Hank was doing things his way, just as he always has done since he left MGM, with his unique blend of country, rock and blues. Of course, plenty of others have blended these three, including Elvis in the fifties, but Hank's blend is very much his own.
On this album, the my favorite tracks (but not by much) are the title track, Women I've never had and a brilliant duet with Waylon Jennings, The conversation, about Hank's father. There's also a great revival of White lightning, which was written by the Big Bopper but provided George Jones with a top ten American pop hit. Hank's cover is very different from George's but I love them both. Hank also does an excellent cover of Gregg Allman's Come and go blues.
Considering that Hank never did things the Nashville way, it is perhaps surprising that he had as much success as he did - but the quality of his albums, including this one, ensure that he deserved all the success that he had.

Customer Reviews:
A rocking country masterpiece.......2004-02-08
This, from 1981, is one of Hank's finest albums, demonstrating what good, rocking country music is all about. Hank wrote the first five songs here including Dixie on my mind and Texas women, the two big hits and Ain't much more, a bluesy country song reminiscent of the kind of song that Jimmie Rodgers used to sing fifty years earlier, although Hank wrote it and recorded it in his own style.
Rambling man is one of his father's many classic songs. Covers of songs by the Allman Brothers (I got a right to be wrong), Merle Haggard (Footlights), Alabama (Tennessee river) and Waylon Jennings (Are you sure Hank done it this way) complete the album. Of course, Hank Junior's father didn't do it this way but nobody knows how his music would have developed had he lived longer.
If you enjoy hard rocking country music, you'll love Hank's music.

Customer Reviews:
Fine, but Change That Title!.......2007-03-12
Much like previous reviewer Mr. Reynolds, this reviewer bought HTFH for 1 track--"Lonesome 7-7203". The object was to get a version with full backup, chorus and all. To do so was worth every penny! The release spent 25 weeks on the charts, including 4 as # 1. Isn't it sad that HH was killed in that fateful plane crash just 3 days after its' release? His fellow victim, Cowboy Copas, is here with "Alabam" but Patsy is absent. As far as the other tracks are concerned, all are perfectly respectable. In fact, EACH made the Billboard charts! This listener was familiar with all except "You're the Reason" by Bobby Edwards and "The Old Lamplighter" by the Browns. (Didn't Jim Ed do better with a woman by his side be they his sisters or Helen Cornelius?). There are no complaints about this album but as Mr. Reynolds already asked: Are these to be seriously considered "Hard to Find"? Time Life has produced a solid collection here, as they often do. If the suits could only muster up a less misleading title! To close on a positive note, buyers are urged to read the inserted jacket. Where else would one learn that Hawkshaw's wife, Jeanie Shepard, recorded "Lonesome" first? Now THAT would be a "hard to find" hit!
Hard To Find? Maybe........2007-01-21
I bought this one mainly to get "Statue Of A Fool" and "Fraulein", which are somewhat hard to come by. Time Life has more money than God, and I'm sure that comes in handly when it comes time to license this tuff. Sound quality is excellent throughout. But really, does anyone believe that Jimmie Rodgers' "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" is hard to find??

one of the best bocephus albums ever.......2006-04-26
now this is one of the best bocephus albums ever, yes the sound of country in the 70's was a raw sound and i like that sound alot, hank jr can still make good albums and still does, this is the sound of hanks i love best, daddy i need you tonight is still my favorite hank jr song, those type of songs, well the songs hank jr does about hank sr are by far my favorites by him... a fan of bocephus always, and the williams family...
Classic Hank jr Gold........2002-06-18
I own over 10 Hank jr albums and I am a very big fan of his so I know Hank's music well, so trust me when I say this is wonderful.
You can't call yourself a hank fan and not own this CD, it's the first he made under the new label and the first of the Bochepous years.
There is some really great songs on this and only one song is a let down, the song "All by myself" is not so good but with all the other strong recordings on here who cares?
I love his late 70's stuff since it had such a raw sound and..."real" sound to it.
so do buy this CD (heck the price is low as you could want so why not?).

Customer Reviews:
hanks last good record before he became a cliche of himself.......2004-07-12
Between 1975 and 1983, hank made some of the best country rock records out there. Slowly, over the next five years, he became a joke. This album marks the last remnants of the old hank jr. and gives a frightening look at the hank that will dominate for the next several years.
An album of contrasts.......2004-03-07
Hank's style of music mixes blues, rock and country in a way that is all his own. This album is a great example of his music, though blues and rock are much more evident on this album than country. Hank wrote or co-wrote seven of the ten tracks here, but his choice of covers is, as usual, outstanding.
The opening track, Country state of mind, is actually a bluesy song despite its title - very moody. Montana café is a very reflective song. The tempo picks up on the next song. My girl don't like my cowboy hat, which really rocks. The tempo slows again for When something is good why does it change. Next comes a medley of two very old songs - Shine on harvest moon (from 1909) and St Louis blues (only a few years younger). Hank's bluesy covers of these classics may not please everybody but they suit his style and I'm glad he included them. Another cover follows, this time it's the blues rocker, You can't judge a book, from the songbook of Willie Dixon.
Hank sings about himself in My name is Bocephus - a moody blues rocker. Loving instructor is another great blues rocker. Fat friends also rocks but is more light-hearted. Perhaps the best track of all is the last (and the only one that sounds country) - a cover of his father's Mind your own business, in which Reba McEntire, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson and Reverend Ike each sing a few lines.
This album has little to do with country music but it is a high quality album that demonstrates Hank at his best.
Montana Cafe.......2000-08-03
This is some Hank Jr. best work. It got it all, from ballads, to western swing.

Still as good 20 years later.......2007-05-13
I heard this album for the first time when I was 17....I fell in love with it then and it's still as good. It's one of Hank's best albums, yet not his most popular. Montgomery in the Rain kills me everytime I hear it.....you can't get any better than this.
Still New.......2007-02-03
I found this album 27 something years ago, saw Hank in concert around then and they didn't even play New South. Asked one of the bandmembers why, and he said dunno, they usually play that one, maybe hank forgot (he did look a little tipsy). You never know....anyway all forgiven when Family Tradition and Hell Bound came out. If you want real country and real Hank Jr, get at least these three.
Back then I listened to it because it was great country, now since there's no more country, I listen to it even more.
Classic Country.......2005-09-18
A great album. Part blues, part country-rock, part acoustic. Pure heart. Pure Hank. One of the very few country albums I can listen to from start to finish.
Almost A Cult Classic.......2005-06-26
This is pre-Family Tradition, but after Hank finally embraced his own personna and got rid of those leeches in Nashville that just wanted to market him as the son of Hank Williams. In the early 80's I had 7 different Bocephus recordings, mostly on 8 track ;-). This one tested the waters for what was to become a phenomenon. If this had gone bad, there most likely wouldn't have been a Family Tradition, Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, or The Pressure Is On, etc. This represents the day Hank said to himself, "sure, my name is Hank Williams, but I'm not my dad." The rest is country music history. Buy it.
You'll be Feelin Better.......2004-05-16
Feelin Better is one of the great Hank Williams Jr. songs that never made it to the radio. You'll never find it on a greatest hits album, so pick it up on this cd. Like many Hank Jr. tunes, it's autobiographical, but this one ranks right up there with Family Tradition. A careful listen will reveal outlaw great Waylon Jennings adding his unique guitar sound to the track.
Although that song alone is worth the six bucks for the cd, you get a whole lot more. Hank Jr.'s cover of "Uncle Pen" puts Ricky Scaggs' to shame. Belting out Gordon Lightfoot's "Looking At the Rain" in a baritone voice, Hank Jr. proves he can make even a hippy song sound manly.
If you're like me and love Hank Jr.'s late seventies early eighties raw honky tonk rock-a-billy sound, then you'll love this cd.

country fan.......2006-03-26
after listening to this selection of hank jr.s , there were a few slections that i had been looking for, but forget the titlesi would recommend this selection to any of hank jr.s fans that are looking for a excellent quallity cd!
Starts to go downhill at this point.......2005-04-27
In my opinion, Hank Williams Jr. - when he did it right - was about as good as it gets in country music. You listen to his records like "Old Habits" and "Whiskey Bent & Hell Bound" and it is hard to get much better than that. But with this album Hank Jr started showing glimpses of what would become his future...and it's not good. He has a terrible version of "The Tennessee Stud" and everything just seems so overdone. He's best on songs like "I Don't Care If Tomorrow Never Comes", "Ramblin My Shoes" and "All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down" - everything else is just filler. And with future albums the filler would get worse until he eventually got to the point he would write things like "This Ain't Dallas" and "Fax Me a Beer". Too bad, terrible waste of talent.
Brilliant album featuring George Jones and Boxcar Willie.......2004-02-11
The standard of this album is set by the opening track, the classic A country boy can survive. The coalition to ban coalitions is one those political songs that Hank is so good, but this is one that a lot of people can empathize with to some extent, whatever their own political beliefs. Of course, everybody feels like joining one of those coalitions at some time or other, when things or values they treasure are threatened. Tennessee stud is a cover of the classic horse song by Jimmy Driftwood. Rambling in my shoes is a duet with Boxcar Willie, a singer who achieved fame in the UK but, as I understand, remained virtually unknown in his homeland. Boxcar also contributed the train whistle effects. The title track is a smoldering bluesy song.
All my rowdy friends have settled down, lamenting how his friends no longer spend as much time enjoying themselves drinking, was one of the biggest hits of Hank's hugely successful career. I don't care if tomorrow never comes, a great duet with George Jones, is about having a good time - so perhaps Hank found one rowdy friend he could still drink with. Weatherman is another great bluesy song, in which Hank begs for a change in the weather. Every time I hear that song is another lament, this time remembering someone he misses. The controversial Ballad of Hank Williams, in which Hank makes his views on his father clear to the tune of Battle of New Orleans, completes an outstanding album.
This is, by Hank's standards, quite a mellow album, proving that he can be brilliant even when he's not being rowdy. Although I normally prefer him when he's rowdy, I enjoy both aspects of his music and the strength of the material here ensures that this is one of my favorite albums of his.
Hank's Best.......2003-07-20
This is definitely my all-time favorite Hank album. When I was a kid my dad had this on vinyl and I remember listening to it the night before going fishing in Gettysburg, PA. The memories this album conjures up for me are amazing. My favorite song is probably 'Tennessee Stud' with its "Johnny Cash-like" vocal delivery. Of course the classic 'Country Boy Can Survive' is on this one which is very fun to perform at karaoke by the way. Other highlights include 'Ramblin' In My Shoes' featuring the late great Boxcar Willie, 'Mr Weatherman' which reminds one a bit of Eric Clapton's 'Wonderful Tonight', and the title track 'The Pressure Is On' where Hank's Greg Allman influence just shines. In my opinion this CD is a must-have for all country fans. It sounds just as good today as when it was first released and will sound good until we're all gone. It is timeless!!
Pure Country GOLD!.......2002-12-30
IF you liked Hank 20 years ago, this disc will take you right back to the 1980's! A decidedly invaluable addition to my Hank collection!
