About the Artist
With a fresh approach to timeless material, Gary Nichols and The Ballistic Bovine Boys! re-create the popular music of what has become known as, the "golden era". During the 1930s, 40s 50s and early 60s, people were listening to swing, jazz, and western swing music alongside country and cowboy music. Gary combines all of these uniquely american forms of music.
Combining all of these uniquely american styles of music is what makes the band's presentation and repertoire unique. The emphasis is on the song and the songwriter rather than the genre.
Growing up in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, Gary listened to and appreciated all genres of music. When he was 19 he taught himself to play guitar and joined his first band where he soon became the frontman, rhythm guitarist, and vocalist.
Several years later he formed Nichols Company Band which went on to be voted the #1 country act in the entire Hudson Valley region by local media, television and radio. This garnered them performance spots at the northeast's premier fairs, festivals and theatres. When they weren't headlining themselves, they opening for or sharing the bill with such acts as Crystal Gayle, Asleep at the Wheel, Willie Nelson, Patty Loveless and others who came to town.
Now living in Nashville, Gary is on the Tennessee Arts in Education roster and presents programs to libraries, arts councils and schoools.... as well as community concerts with his band, The Ballistic Bovine Boys!
When the new Nashville Country Music Hall of Fame opened in May 2001, they invited Gary and the band to perform during their grand opening weekend celebration, and when the Grand Ole Opry celebrated their 75th anniversary, they asked Gary and the band to be part of that as well.
With the diversity of musical styles, and historical significance that this vintage music offers, Gary's demographics include a large faction of music lovers who enjoy listening to public radio, the Grand Ole Opry, and big band music.

The world would be a far colder place at Christmas without the electric guitar and Los Straitjackets' Tis the Season for is all the proof you need. Packed with 11 guitar-driven traditional songs and two originals, this memorable disc is a must-have for anyone who loves the sound of unaffected, basic guitar rock reminiscent of the Ventures and your favorite garage rock band. Adventurous, ambitious, and totally satisfying, the band takes on "Jingle Bell Rock" (making its guitars ring like a Byrds-fest) and a host of other chestnuts from "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" to the "La Bamba"-framed workout of "Feliz Navidad." Even the band's own "Christmas in Las Vegas" has those classic jingle-jangle guitar hooks that make this record a perennial holiday hit. --Martin Keller

Perfect Antidote..........2005-12-16
...for the holiday blahs...X-mas classics have never rocked liked this. Of particular delight is the seldom heard Christmas classic, "Marshmallow World"...Easily my favorite Holiday collection.
If this album doesn't get you rockin' ...........2004-12-27
If this album doesn't get you rockin', you're already dead. From the opening bars, you can't help but dance (or at least tap your toe.) Nothing preps me for the Christmas season like this album. The day after Thanksgiving, this is the first CD in the stereo: it's a family tradition.
Solid Christmas Surf!.......2004-12-08
I don't know if it's my Southern California upbringing, but I find surf instrumentals to be some of the most spiritual music known to mankind. Add Christmas tunes to the mix, and you have a Holiday treat almost as sweet as Eartha Kitt singing Santa Baby!
What works about Los Straitjackets' Christmas CD is the way they play their vintage surf guitars in a way that keeps the true essence of the Christmas songs we love. They are playful and creative, but never go overboard with trying to totally overhaul the tunes.
The finest creative touch shines on track #6. The beginnings of the surf classic "Pipeline" start the song, then Los Straitjackets go full throttle into a beautiful rendition of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," then briefly blend the instrumental portion of Del Shannon's "Runaway" midway into the tune.
Track #6 is worth the investment alone, but this entire CD is excellent modernized Holiday music. Take a chance on this one!
BORING! This is the WORST LS record........2003-12-25
I have to say as a LS fan that I was hugely disappointed with this record. Pete Curry is a great bass player, song writer, guitarist, etc. and he is fantastic when he's producing/engineering another band (Torquays "Somewhere in California" - true 5 star surf/rock instrumental record) but this is a terribly boring record. It sounds like "Ka-Ching" to me - let's see if we can make the cash registers ring with very little effort. This is especially the case when you listen to the fantastic new release produced by the great Mark Neill - "Supersonic Guitars in 3-D" rocks! Tis the season to give this one a pass and buy the Ventures Christmas record instead.
God Rest Ye Los Straitjackets.......2003-12-21
This is a fine seasonal effort from America's rockin' instrumental combo. A natural comparison would be to the Venture's Christmas Album. In fact, the version of "Sleigh Ride" here is almost a note for note copy of the Ventures version. But while the Ventures album grafted intros from then recent hits onto most of their Christmas songs, Los Straitjackets only do that on a few of the songs here. "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", for example, uses the intro to the surf classic "Pipeline" and later uses it's organ solo. Anyway, this is a really fun Christmas album. If you are familiar with Los Straitjackets and enjoy them, I think you will dig this.

Beethoven: Songs from the British Isles.......2007-04-10
Beethoven was commissioned to compose music for British songs, but he was given free rein as to the music, not being constrained by the words. What he composed is marvelous, melodic, memorable, captivating, and haunting, to use just a few adjectives to describe this music. I have a 33-1/3 record (yes-vinyl) of other songs that he wrote for the Brits, and this CD is complementary to that - equally well performed. A person that likes OLD folksongs will be humming the tunes forthwith.

Troubled show, but good sound.......2003-12-23
This is the first disc in the first volume of the BEAT THE BOOTS series (in which Zappa collected some his more notorious bootlegs and released them himself, packaging, errors, and all). Its actually one of the more worthwhile ones that I've heard. The packaging is amusing -- handled with some care, with a rather grotesque but well-drawn cover, and a painstakingly detailed Zappaesque story on the back.
It documents the Scandanavian branch of the 1967 Mothers tour. This ill-fated leg off the tour is famous because Zappa, taking a detour in Italy and drinking some tap water, had horrible gastro-intestinal problems. This was in addition to the already awful conditions the band was performing under (see the amusing "Where's Our Equipment?" on YCDToSA vol.5). Considering the date, the sound quality is excellent. It runs at a disappointing 37 minutes.
While, as another reviewer has noted, Zappa seems decidedly uninvolved in this particular performance, its still quite interesting. The Mothers run through a song suite which contains both a snippet of Stravinsky's PETROUSHKA and the Supreme's BABY LOVE. The recording seems to cut here. NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO has a few bars of Tchaikovsky's 6th during a monologue, which leads into a few unnotable covers like HOUND DOG and BLUE SUEDE SHOES. The highlight of the disc is a pretty inspired performance of KING KONG. Bunk Gardner and Ian Underwood are in top form. IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE is the closer -- just as bizarre as usual.
Not a bad disc at all. Fans of the early Mothers lineup should definitely consider this one.
Footnote to the Dublin review.......2003-07-03
No, the sound quality isn't top-notch, and there's another reason why this album isn't highly-rated. Zappa was unwell on this particular night (he had gastro-enteritis, I think) and spent much of the concert offstage. (It's been speculated that Ian Underwood played some of the guitar parts). So those looking for Zappa solos will be disappointed. The slightly flat vocals during `You Didn't Try To Call Me' will also disappoint (I know it's not supposed to matter in the case of a semi-humorous song, but still...) even if they fit the ensuing medley of song-parodies - which includes an obscurity, `No Matter What You Do' (with an amusing talkover section), and a snippet from Stravinsky's `Petrouchka' which had to be deleted from some issues of the CD (copyright etc).
`King Kong' is what you buy the CD for. And it's an unusual arrangement, closer to the studio version than the standard live one as it's in 3-4 time (rather than 12-8) and doesn't have the composed middle-section familiar from albums like `The Ark'. The theme is stated by Bunk Gardner on clarinet, who leads off the solos with an exquisite two-part affair. Underwood follows, on alto sax - desperate and distraught-sounding, and beautifully so - then some spare and thoughtful keyboard work from Preston. Zappa stays out of the action, apart from conducting, and a few guitar licks during Bunk's solo. Which is just as well, anything he came up with would seem like an anticlimax in comparison to the other three soloists...But after Don's solo, Zappa and his baton take control, and the madness begins. Deafening synthesizer shrieks, voice samples, radio scanning, much indecipherable babble in foreign languages, a quick chorus of `It Can't Happen Here' and a gargantuan synth solo from Preston take us through to the end of the show, and album.
mixed bag.......2001-04-19
High point of the disc is a rousing King Kong, which has zappa's amusing introduction. Some real fine blowing by the horn section. Then a bonkers it can't happen here, loads of 'noise' including radio transmission, very out there. These two take up most of the 40 or so minutes. Also there is a 'waltz' version of you didn't try to call me, it's good. Big leg emma is ok, then you have various covers of different tunes like baby love, hound dog, bristol stomp. Moderately enjoyable tunes. Sound quality is reasonable for a bootleg...it has better sound than freaks and motherf***ers for instance. If you've never heard Frank Zappa's music, this is not a good place to start, get an official release. But king kong and it can't happen here are treasures, making this cd worthwhile for zappa fans.

Go Northwest Choirs.......2000-01-11
As a huge choral music fan, I tell you these guys are great. I have been to many of their concerts and always enjoy them immensely. To all you performing guys, Joe, Jenny, and Vocalpoint! great job. This is a wonderful CD and is a nice mix of rare classical and pop stuff. I'm not sure if Amazon has it, but also look for Our Finest Gifts, released 1994, for great traditional numbers. If you haven't heard this group, you don't know what you are missing.
