Hollis Brown (see hollisbrown.com) has been around for about ten years, popping up in and around the Southern Manitoba folk scene. Their independently produced tapes include a Christmas album and several collections of covers and original tunes, featuring the songwriting and folk-history sensibilites of Wendell Koop and the silkily haunting voice of Rosalie Madden. All of the band members have day jobs, but their performances are legendary, whether with the Christmas Cheer Board annual fundraisers or the barn burners in Blumenort. These last are invoked in a song on their CD Running Out of Range. The CD also includes the astonishing original song "Cigarettes, a Woman, and My Redneck Guitar," which sounds like Steve Earle and Tom Petty got together and decided not to leave the room until they had written the best song they could come up with together. Matthew Koop sings this one, written for him by Wendell. Rosalie's vocals on "Working Man" are another highlight of this fine, independent, easy-to-overlook gem of a disk. All of the band's tapes are well worth checking out, too, but don't miss Running Out of Range.
