It's a little hard to take Rod Stewart seriously when, on the first track of this third installment in his Great American Songbook series, he sings ruefully about his love life being "lean" ("Embraceable You"). But otherwise, Stardust...Volume III is as note-for-note solid as its predecessors--a cozy-up-to-the-fire treat that's also a pleasant reminder of these songs' staying power. "S'Wonderful" settles on the ears winningly, and Stewart's scratchathon voice scalpels the cobwebs off of "Isn't It Romantic" in a way that compels the average listener to reconsider thinking it dopey. In addition, the parade of high-wattage pals recruited to pitch in continues here, resulting in a couple of must-hear combinations. Eric Clapton delivers a rather un-Clapton-like guitar solo on "Blue Moon" and Stevie Wonder blows harp like he means it on "What a Wonderful World," but it is the duets--"Baby It's Cold Outside" with the unsinkable Dolly Parton and "Manhattan" with the indomitable Bette Midler--that the dazzle most. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Rod Stewart Revisited.......2007-05-07

A nostalgic trip to the romantic past. Who would ever think Rod Stewart of "Hot Legs" fame could do such justice to these "Oldies but Goodies"?

There is only 1 ROD STEWART and this album WILL NOT DISAPPOINT his fans! AWESOME! TIMELESS!

1 out of 5 stars If works once - do it over and over and over...........2007-03-05

I really like this music! Truly! And I'm only 25... It scares me that the ones who are gonna open "my generation" to this music are Rod Stewart & Westlife!
The choices of songs are good and the orchastration on the firts 2 are more the okey. But his torn old tired voice over these beautiful musical settings just doesn't do them justice. And why bring in Dolly Parton & Cher? They're both fantastic singers but jazzsingers they're NOT!
Why buy this when there's an limitless world of original jazz singers/musicians to choose from? It's just beyond me!
If you still want someone contemporaray - stick to Natalie Cole, Madeleyne Peyroux or my favourite: Stacey Kent (check her out - you WONT regret it!!!)
Back to Rod: The last effort (number 4 in the series) was so hastily put together the tracklist isn't even correct. I could just see him: "Alright people! I have an hour to record this, so just gimme the mic so I can get back to chasing women! How many millions is this cd gonna make me?! Really!? Great! We'll make another next month! Just throw something together - they'll buy anything!"
No - stick to the originals people!

5 out of 5 stars Rod, you sly dog you..........2007-02-10

Okay, I bought this CD for my mother's birthday (she loves it!), but before I gave it to her, I gave it a spin on my CD player. To my surprise, I ended up giving it a few more spins, and buying my own copy (as well as copies of the other "Songbook" recordings).
Smooth stuff, Rod does a great job. Old standards reworked almost perfectly. I like this a lot!
Truthfully, when you add together Rod's "rocking" early phase and these "Songbook" recordings, it's almost possible to forgive him for "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy".

BTW, While you can't see the rest of her, the chick on the cover's legs are HOT!!

Amazon.com essential recording

"Appalachia circa 1907" is the way they described it in the postgame interviews. It wasn't, of course, but it was as close as you could come in 1987 and still hope to sell the million copies that this ended up selling. The "Three Tenors" of country music juggle leads, complement each other to often haunting effect, and subjugate their egos to a greater cause. The songs run the gamut from primordial country favorites like "Rosewood Casket" and "Hobo's Meditation," to '50s pop (a rather anomalous "To Know Him Is to Love Him"), and mainstream country. The instrumentation is restrained, the vocals are unfailingly lovely, and the result is a trio that is more than the sum of its parts. --Colin Escott

5 out of 5 stars PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - Anniversary release????.......2007-05-23

It goes without saying this is a classic recording and is mentioned numorous times in articles and reviews comparing other recordings to it. I haven't heard any rumors but it would be fitting if Rhino planned a 20th Anniversary deluxe release - remastered and expanded to 2 discs. Trio definitely qualifies as an obvious choice for a new remastered release. I can only hope it is being kept a secret given the little advance information given out for most Rhino releases - the upcoming Emmylou rarities box set included.

5 out of 5 stars Trio.......2007-03-12

Wonderful music by three very talented ladies. I play it frequently. Received in excellent conditoin.

5 out of 5 stars Good Harmony.......2007-03-09

This is one of the best country ladies harmony record I have heard in a long time. The solo's are very good and from two ladie's one doesn't hear to much from.
It is to bad the songs in this cd are sad and kinda depressing but the music is great.

5 out of 5 stars Gift.......2007-01-09

This was a gift, but I got a lot of credit for getting. I have heard the CD though I thought it was very nice.

3 out of 5 stars Only Somewhat Impressed.......2006-08-10

I enjoyed the harmony of the singers and a few of the songs, but to really enjoy the CD, you need to be an OLD folk songs enthusiast.

Maybe they should have subtitled this album O Sister, Where Art Thou? Like the music from the Coen brothers' O Brother... movie, Songcatcher celebrates the emotional purity of mountain music, the acoustic balladry of the Appalachians--only this soundtrack features an all-female assemblage. Among the luminaries who shine the brightest: Rosanne Cash, who sets the tone with the album-opening "Fair and Tender Ladies"; Julie Miller, whose original "All My Tears" could pass as an old spiritual; Patty Loveless, who returns to her Kentucky roots with "Sounds of Loneliness"; and Gillian Welch, who leads an a cappella rendition of "Wind and Rain." Of the more familiar material, Emmylou Harris seems like she's coasting through the oft-revived "Barbara Allen" while Maria McKee sounds like she's singing for her life on "Wayfarin' Stranger." Yet the emphasis throughout is less on vocal virtuosity than on the stark simplicity of the songs, the album more impressive as an ensemble piece than a showcase for individual singers. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Songcatcher.......2007-05-30

This CD is absolutely fantastic. If anyone that enjoys mountain music will
certainly be crazy about it. And if you enjoy the CD, you will diffiently enjoy the DVD of the Songcatcher.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-05-25

I should have paid more attention to the fine print. Mostly, this is not a soundtrack album. If I want to listen to all the songs as they are performed in the film, it seems I will have to get the DVD.

If you want to listen to the soundtrack performances of all the songs, then do not get this CD.

2 out of 5 stars Not very authentic, but a couple of good songs.......2007-01-17

This is an okay album if you are just looking for some listenable music, but in general the songs are overdone and not authentic-sounding (as in, they don't sound like mountain music but like something produced in some fancy studio). The exception is Iris DeMent's "Pretty Saro," which is an absolute gem and perhaps makes the album worth buying for just this one song!!! There are some good songs on here, but if you are looking for real Appalachian tunes, you'll not find much of that. Of course, many of the singers have fantastic voices, so that's one plus. There are a lot of really good authentic albums out there, but this isn't one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Songcatcher - The real soundtrack.......2007-01-16

My mother loves this CD so much I had to buy her another, one for her home & one in the car. My grandmother and aunt loved the music & movie too, and now my 9 year old is singing some of the quirky songs too. They highly recommend it for people that like the movie or this type of music.

1 out of 5 stars Bad.......2007-01-02

Nothing good to say about this... overproduced and does not capture spirit of the movie. Get "Songcatcher II" instead.

This long-awaited, highly anticipated follow-up to 1987's much-loved initial Trio offering doesn't disappoint. On Trio II, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton weave a spell that's equal parts traditional and contemporary, country and folk, vision and voice. It's their seamless musical blend of these counterpoints--as in the sweet, sweeping harmonies on Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush" or the instrumentally spare acoustic presentation of the Carter Family's "Lover's Return"--that makes these songs such treasures. When individual voices soar and fuse together to create distinct new voices, when instinct leads the way for artistry to follow, the result is perfect harmony, pure magic. --Alexandra Russell

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic! .......2007-06-27

Some people are complaining about the duplication of songs on this cd and Linda Ronstadt's Feels Like Home cd. When these tracks were recorded, there were conflicts with schedules and an argument took place between Ms. Parton and Ms. Ronstadt (I remember reading an article that Dolly told the details). After the feud, the recordings were shelved and it looked very grim that this cd would ever be released. Ms. Ronstadt's company was pushing for a cd to release and since there didn't seem to be any hope of another Trio recording, she used the tracks of her and Ms. Harris (and in her linear notes on her cd, she thanks Ms. Harris for her loyalty because of the feud between her and Dolly.) They decided to record other singers for the 'Trio' affect, they recruited Alison Krauss (a frequent Dolly collabirator). Dolly used one track for her Treasures cd and also used Ms. Harris but also used a third singer for the 'Trio' affect. After several years, things worked out so that they could release the Trio cd but of course some of the tracks were released on previous cd's. When the trio was promoting the cd, you could sense some tension between Ms. Parton and Ms. Ronstadt.

Even with all the drama, the cd is terrific and they sound perfect together. The original concept was to have each lady take lead on a cd. The first one has Dolly being lead on most songs and the second one has Linda taking lead on most songs. Doubtful that a third cd will be released using Emmylou as the lead, which is a shame because these ladies combined can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. Angelic is the word that comes to mind when I hear the three of them harmonizing.

2 out of 5 stars Weak sequel.......2007-06-19

Despite the beautiful voices, especially Linda's and Emmylou's, this album is a real disappointment. As good as the song selection was on "Trio", the same can't be said about this turkey. Mostly blah songs that are totally uninspiring. Spend your money on Emmylou's anthology or some of Ronstadt's other albums. Their version of "After the Gold Rush" does have its moments though.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good Follow Up To "Trio".......2006-05-08

The album is so great, I can't believe I never knew about this one earlier. The album is so moving, the music & the singers on here are totally haunting. The songs get to where they never leave your mind and it gets you where your listening to it over & over again, of course the most haunting and beautfully sad song on here is "After The Goldrush", I really can't understand what it's about, but all I know is that's the one song that sticks in my mind. "Trio II (2)" also gives you three different kinds of music, there's Country, Bluegrass, & a little bit of rock/pop especially on "5. The Blue Train", "8. He Rode All The Way To Texas" & "9. Feel's Like Home". Emmylou Harris & Linda Ronstadt are the lead singers on here & their great, But! Dolly Parton (one of my favorite's ever!) only sings for the leads on track 4 & 8, the rest is either back vocals are all together. Overall it's an A- album.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful voices.......2003-12-05

This album might not have been as successful as the original TRIO album from 1987, but I think it's even better. The song selection is very strong, and the songs suit these ladies very well. The harmonies are beautiful. There's nothing more I could ask for from this album. It opens with the beautiful "Lovers Return", which is a Carter Family song. "High Sierra" is a beautiful song, Linda sounds wonderful on this song. Emmylou takes the helm in a cover of Dolly's "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind". They do a great version of Neil Young's "After The Goldrush" which is just stunning. Linda is lead on "The Blue Train", which is a very nice song. Other highlights include "When We're Gone, Long Gone", "Feels Like Home", "You'll Never Be The Sun" and "He Rode All The Way To Texas". This album was originally recorded in 1994 but there was problems with the release and other factors, so it wasn't released until early 1999. Definately a gem!

4 out of 5 stars This Version of "After the Goldrush" is Breath-taking!!.......2003-06-20

I bought the first Trio CD when it came out and enjoyed most of the songs there. I have to admit, I only bought this second Trio release because of one song "After the Goldrush". This has to be one of the most beautiful, breath-taking, chills-down-your-spine song ever recorded. Most remakes usually aren't as good as the originals, but I beg to differ on this one. This is one of those songs that I crank up as loud as my speakers and ears can stand it - I feel like I'm hearing music and vocals from heaven. It's just astounding. I did finally give the rest of the CD a listen to, and it's fairly decent. But, even if all these other songs sucked, to me, it would have been worth the price just to have "After the Goldrush".

Like 1996's Treasures, this covers collection by Dolly Parton might seem, on the surface, to be a gimmicky filler in her prestigious catalog of some of country's finest originals. Yet it's a vast improvement. Those Were the Days, largely bluegrass-inspired and featuring a plethora of famous duet and harmony partners, has more than a few sterling moments. And that's not just because songs like "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?," "Blowin' in the Wind," "Both Sides Now," and "Twelfth of Never" find her paired with the likes of Norah Jones, Lee Ann Womack, Nickel Creek, Judy Collins, and Keith Urban. If Parton takes John Lennon's "Imagine" too far over the top, she rescues Tommy James's overly processed "Crimson and Clover" from its original reverb hell, her understated banjo/Dobro/fiddle arrangement imbuing it with dignity. Other selections seem an obvious fit. "Me and Bobby McGee" (with a charmed Kris Kristofferson) resonates with longing and loss, while "If I Were a Carpenter," a duet with Joe Nichols, finds sensual heat smoldering above its solid musical underpinning. But the gem here is her rendering of "The Cruel War," on which Alison Krauss, Dan Tyminski, and Mindy Smith add feathery harmony vocals to Parton's gossamer lead--a performance so authentically poignant and heartfelt as to melt an Arctic ice cap. No matter how this odd collection hits you, give the Cantilevered One credit for being brave enough to tackle it, as well as extra kudos for coaxing two very special guests into the studio--Parton's old partner and one-time nemesis Porter Wagoner on the title track, and Yusuf Islam, a.k.a. Cat Stevens, who plays acoustic guitar on his own "Where Do the Children Play." You just never know what the Wigged Wonder will do next. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

A year in the making, this album of era-defining songs from the 1960s and 1970s is an astonishing collection of indispensable classics, performed in Dolly Parton's signature style with a top-notch list of friends.

Parton, who produced the album, invited several of the artists who wrote or made these songs famous to sing with her. Renowned musicians Roger McGuinn (of the Byrds), Kris Kristofferson, Judy Collins, and Tommy James make appearances on Those Were the Days. She also asked recent chart-topping artists Norah Jones, Keith Urban, Nickel Creek, Lee Ann Womack, Rhonda Vincent, Joe Nichols, and Alison Krauss to join her in the studio.

The Country Music Hall of Famer, Grammy winner, and Oscar nominee said, "I am really very proud of this album. I love all of these songs and all of the artists who performed, it just felt special from the moment the concept came to my mind. I knew I had to produce it myself in order to get all of my ideas across exactly as I wanted them to be presented. I really hope people enjoy it. I know I enjoyed making it."

Recorded in Nashville, Those Were the Days retains the bluegrass-inspired sound that earned her two Grammys and a new generation of fans for her previous four albums on Sugar Hill Records. The album includes a group sing featuring a menagerie of Grand Ole Opry legends. Capping off the album is Parton's unique version of "Imagine."

4 out of 5 stars Fun, sweet album..........2007-03-14

I REALLY thought that might hate this album, but I gave it a try because I'm a Dolly fan. I found her vocal performance to be heartfelt (as always), and the bluegrass arrangements were fun. I prefer Dolly's original songs, but I quite like this album anyway. Her voice still sounds great too. It's a bit cheesy, but I enjoyed it.

3 out of 5 stars Should have been released in '72.......2007-03-01

The set list ain't subtle, but neither is Dolly Parton.

Slick and overemoting, Parton's heart is nevertheless in the right place - stop the war NOW. Most of this Folk & Woodstock stuff could have come out in '72 except I suspect Parton was pulling for Tricky Dick back then. Making amends - "Where Do The Children Play," "Turn Turn Turn," "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" and "Imagine" set the agenda. The guest stars are almost inaudible, alas; and, hey, was Joan Baez contacted for this album? - she would have been killer on "Blowin' In The Wind." Politics aside, the best track is "Me and Bobby McGee" with a playfully audible Kris Kristofferson on vocals, rocking and raving from start to finish with hoedown harmonica on a rip.

Lightweight, but kinda cool.

4 out of 5 stars those were the days.......2007-02-01

I like Dolly Parton's choice of songs, and that she included an artist associated with an earlier release of each song with her rendition.

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievably bad.......2007-01-30

One need only listen to Dolly's absolute abomination of Blowin' In the Wind to realize this is possibly the worst record of covers in existence. I love Dolly and I love the songs, but the combination is just awful. This CD should never have been made.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK, but could have been better.......2006-11-02

When I read about this album in the paper, I was excited. I'm a Dolly fan, and thought it would be interesting to hear her covering 1960's songs that I love and grew up with. The best thing on this CD is the Twelfth of Never because it's done differently - uptempo and bluegrass. But here's what's wrong - this is not a duet album in spite of its stellar cameos. Those were the days has Mary Hopkin on it - it would have been so much fun to hear the 2 of them trading verses - instead poor Mary is buried so far down in the mix you can't even hear her. Where do the children play, a delicately beautiful albeit depressing song by Cat Stevens in it's original incarnation, is redone here with..you guessed - Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), but again his voice is buried so far down in the mix along with a chorus of 1000 that you can't even hear him. Crimson & Clover, an LP I once owned as a young teenager is sung with Tommy James. Can you hear him? Hardly. Worst of all, Dolly did an overly bombastic version of the terribly over-recorded Imagine. To be honest with you, the song has been played so much over the years it has lost it's meaning and worn out it's welcome. Why did she have to pick Imagine? This would have been a much more enjoyable listen if the production had been more spartan. Yes, without the gospel choruses etc., I would have enjoyed it more. Instead it comes across like a Shania Twain CD, and that's not a good thing. If you're looking for Dolly at her best, try The Winning Hand from the 1980's which also includes some great tunes and DUETS with Kris, and WIllie and Brenda Lee.

This is one of the best I've heard if you like country & duets... Absolutely wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars Missing Some Major Duets!! .......2005-07-26

These tracks are all excellent but frankly several major country duets are not here!! Where on earth are Kenny Rogers and Dottie West?? Instead we get Rogers with Sheena Easton and the Rogers/Easton combo makes it almost entirely a pop recording and it should not be on this package. Buck Owens & Rose Maddox have a track but where is Buck with his far more famous duet partner Susan Raye? The Merle Haggard - Janie Fricke track should not have been included since she really only just sings harmony on the record. Why aren't Jimmy Wakely & Margaret Whiting who started the male/female star duet craze in 1949 with Slipping Around here or Kitty Wells & Red Foley, the first superstar duet? And where are Ferlin Husky & Jean Shepard, Jack Greene & Jeannie Seely, David Houston & Barbara Mandrell, Bobby Bare & Skeeter Davis, Roy Drusky & Priscilla Mitchell, Don Gibson & Dottie West, Johnny Duncan & Janie Fricke, to name just a few of the famous country duos of yore. Instead we have too many tracks with the same artists here. It's a very good package but it should have been a great and classic one.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dolly Album.......2007-05-14

Excellent album! There's the infamous "Jolene", the mega-hit original version of "I Will Always Love You", and the laid-back "Early Morning Breeze". And the bonus tracks are great--"Cracker Jack" is a fun song about her little puppy dog, and Dolly fans will enjoy to hear her sing another version of "Barbara On Your Mind". A classic, must-have album for any Dolly fan!

5 out of 5 stars Best Issue of Jolene".......2007-04-08

Jolene has been released 3 previous times on CD over the years and this release is a standout. It comes with a beautiful repackaging of the original art work, new liner notes from "Rolling Stone" writer Chet Flippo, who is a huge Dolly fan, rarely seen photos, original dates of when the songs were recorded, and the best part 4 unreleased songs that are amazing. Get this rare CD as "Jolene" is the best Dolly Parton album, along with "The Golden Streets of Glory", she has ever put out. The sound quality too is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Mid-70s Parton hitting her country commercial peak.......2007-04-05

By the mid-70s, Parton had emerged from Porter Wagoner's shadow to redefine herself as a powerhouse solo artist. This 1974 release, her first solo LP to crack the top-10, includes the chart-topping title track, as well as the original version of Parton's farewell to Porter Wagoner, "I Will Always Love You." The title track, covered by others (including a superb bluegrass version by Rhonda Vincent), is best heard in this original form.

"I Will Always Love You" is closely associated among film viewers and MTV watchers with Whitney Houston, but Parton's original, aching with conflicting strength, vulnerability, fragility and resolution outstrips both Houston's remake, and Parton's own reworking for the film "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." The song was so strong that all three versions - Houston's and two from Parton - topped the charts!

The album's eight additional tunes, six from Parton, one from Wagoner, and one from Blaise Tosti ("It Must Be You") have tamer themes that those explored on earlier Parton LP's like "Coat of Many Colors," but no less heartfelt. Parton's emancipation from Wagoner would lead her to industry honors (including CMA Female Vocalist of the Year in '75 and '76), Hollywood and crossover success, but the mid-70s found her in full flower of solo aristry as a country singer-songwriter.

Buddha's 1999 reissue of this title was a straight-up 10 track, 25-minute disc. RCA/Legacy expands on the original with a quartet of bonus tracks from the 1974 sessions, bringing the playing time to 37 minutes. It's surprising that a track like "Cracker Jack," a loving song of a childhood pet, was lost in Parton's catalog. Though she "Another Woman's Man" (a reflection of "Jolene") and the tangy day-dreaming "Last Night's Lovin'" remained unreleased, and "Barbara on Your Mind" was reworked on Parton's 1982's "Heartbreak Express" LP. All four are worthwhile additions.

Legacy's new reissue (along with accompanying versions of "My Tennessee Mountain Home" and "Coat of Many Colors") fills out the packaging with newly struck liner notes by Chet Flippo and chart and session information missing from the earlier Buddha version. This is an essential entry in Parton's catalog, and even those who own the earlier CD reissue should consider upgrading for the bonus tracks and new booklet. [©2007 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

4 out of 5 stars The bonuses are better than the album. .......2007-04-05

As with "Coat Of Many Colors" this album has been issued on CD several times already. The album is good, and has some stand out tracks, the title track, "I Will Always Love You" (although I have always preferred the 1982 version), and "Lonely Coming Down". So the draw here are the bonus tracks, all of them are pretty strong. "CrackerJack", is about a girl and her puppy, sort of along the lines of Dolly's other puppy songs "Gyspy Joe & Me" or "Me And Little Andy". "Another Woman's Man" is sort of the same story as Jolene, but told from Jolene's perspective. "Barbara On Your Mind" was later redone for Dolly's 1982 album "Heartbreak Express", the original included here is a better version. Finally "Last Night's Lovin'" simple put is an ode to afterglow!!! When all is said and done, this re-issue is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars "Another Dolly Winner!".......2007-04-08

Rolling Stone magazine named this album last year as one of the top 100 greatest albums of all time by any artist in any genre. Heavily regarded by many critics and Dolly fans as one of the top 3 albums in her career, "Coat of Many Colors" is simply a standout. This collection comes with new liner notes, recoreded dates of the song sessions, beautiful repackaging if the original LP art, and 4 new songs never released, with the exception of "Just as Good as Gone" that was a rare single B-side released back in 1972. A must have for any music fan. The rare Dolly pictures too are the most glamorous I have ever seen of Dolly Parton.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect Parton LP from 1971 w/bonus tracks.......2007-04-05

For an artist of Parton's stature, it's incredible that her towering early achievements are so spottily available on CD. Many of her brilliant solo albums of the '70s - the sides waxed before crossing over to pop stardom - have been left unreissued. The few that have seen CD, such as this classic 1971 release, have moved in and out of print. Buddha provided a straight-up reissue in 1999, and an imported two-fer on BMG paired this title with Parton's "Joshua" LP. The domestic Buddha release is now replaced by this bonus-track augmented Legacy reissue, but fans that want the extra tracks here and "Joshua" on the import will buy themselves some duplication.

Parton's early years under the tutelage of Porter Wagoner were rich in material and performances, and "Coat of Many Colors" contains some of her best. The title track weaves biography, bible verse and gospel soul into one of Parton's most heart-rending compositions. Her words capture the emotional turmoil of childhood through the discovery of an adult's nostalgic memory, and her voice holds both a little girl's confusion and a women's knowingness. It's breathtaking to hear songwriting, singing and production mesh so fully.

The unrivaled quality of Parton's voice is heard on the bluegrass-harmony backed "My Blue Tears" and the forthright "She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like)." Parton's sassy comedic edge, which would carry her into the mainstream, is heard on "Traveling Man," and the outré "If I Lose My Mind" must have shocked a few country listeners in 1971. The backings include fiddle, steel, twangy guitar, funky swamp beats and even a touch of '70s soul, and it's a testament to Parton's artistic gravity that it meshes so well into an album.

The reissue's four bonus tracks include three cast-offs from the original 1971 sessions, and the a superb acoustic demo of "My Blue Tears." Parton rerecorded her own "My Heart Started Breaking" for her 1975 "Dolly" LP, but this 1971 version's never been heard before. Her "Just as Good as Gone" was left to the songbook, and her rendition of Porter Wagoner's "The Tender Touch of Love" now joins the previously released edition by Jim Ed Brown. All three of the studio-produced bonuses fit the sound and feel of the album, but it's the voice-and-guitar demo of "My Blue Tears" that catapults this disc past earlier reissues.

Legacy's reissue (along with accompanying volumes of "My Tennessee Mountain Home" and "Jolene") fills out the packaging with newly struck liner notes by Chet Flippo and chart and session information that was missing from the earlier Buddha edition. The running time is still short (38 minutes, instead of the original LP's 27), but it's a great place to start a Dolly Parton collection; those who own the earlier CD reissue should consider upgrading for the bonus tracks and new booklet. 4 out of 5 stars Album better than the bonuses. .......2007-04-05

This is one of three titles re-issued of Dolly Parton. This one, along with "Jolene" have been issued on CD several times already. So the draw here are the bonus tracks. In this case the album as a whole is better than the bonus tracks. The bonus tracks are good, but nothing that stands out and knocks you over. The acoustic "My Blue Tears" is the best of the bunch though. As for the original album, some classic tracks here. One Dolly's stronger early albums.

5 out of 5 stars Keep 'em coming!.......2007-04-04

I love Dolly, and I am very pleased to see a trend at rereleasing her older albums on CD. I HAD to buy this version of Coat for the bonus tracks, which are wonderful. I have never really been a fan of demo tracks, nor a fan of "My Blue Tears", but this version is remarkable and has proved to me what a great song it is! I am hoping to see more reissues in the futurn; "Bubblin' Over" anyone?
