David Houston had 24 Top Ten hits on the country charts. Having them all on this CD is outstanding. I've seen too many greatest hits collections go either too far or not far enough. This is a wonderful collection. I highly recommend it.

I bought this and his Pure Country CD, Both excellent. I can close my eyes and remember him and the joy his music has brought me over the years. This CD brings out the sweetness and clarity in his voice and is very well done. Congratulations!

I am just beginning to get a nice collection of CD's of my favorite singers, and David Houston had to be one of them. I chose this one, as it seemed to have most of his best songs, and for a great price. I am glad I did. I absolutely love his
voice. It could melt butter.

First of all this includes the ORIGINAL versions of all of David Houston's top 10 hits, plus his top 10's with Tammy Wynette and Barbara Mandrell. This is a little short of definite though. The cover graphics are awful. Why did they feel the need to put little drawings of guitars in the corners of the picture? The notes by Collin Escotte are very good, but that is the only thing on the 2 page insert. This more than filled the hole in my collection and completly makes "American Originals" obsolete. Of all the available collections up to now, this is by far the best one you can get.

This is probably the best collection to date of David Houston's fine work. Houston was a raw honky-tonker from Louisiana who was smoothed out by Nashville's legend Billy Sherrill and went on to win two Grammy Awards for his signature song, "Almost Persuaded". That song is on this collection, along with every other major hit Houston had in the late 60's and early 70's, including his duets with Tammy Wynette ("My Elusive Dreams") and Barbara Mandrell ("After Closing Time"). Houston's soaring high tenor combined with Sherrill's masterful songwriting and engineering produced a unique sound that has never been duplicated. These are the original recordings, not the horrible re-records found on some other collections. Well worth the money if you are a fan of David Houston or of country music from the 1960's.

Infinite Voice is one of my favorite albums to pop into the player after a long and difficult day at work. Its soothing lightly classical pieces with Koldenhoven's angelic vocals do much to sooth an agitated spirit and sing peace to the soul. Wonderful Darlene! We need more like this.

A classically trained vocalist with a Master's Degree in music from the Chicago Conservatory College, the golden voiced Darlene Koldenhoven has participated in a number of high profile pop culture products. In the 1980's she appeared on jazz composer Clare Fisher's Brazilian jazz vocal project, Freefall, which was awarded a Grammy in 1986 for Best Jazz Vocal Performance by a Group. In the 90's she appeared in and served as choir director for both Sister Act films, and in 1994 sung with Yanni Live at the Acropolis, a concert film reportedly seen by nearly 500 million people worldwide. She has also sung on recordings with Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart, David Byrne, and Ramsey Lewis, among others, and has authored a set of musical instruction books and CDs entitled Train Your Voice.

In the late 90's Koldenhoven began writing and producing her own solo recordings, including the adult contemporary Keys to the World, a gospel album called Free to Serve, and the Christmas album Heavenly Peace. This year she's back with an all new recording, entitled Infinite Voice, a collection of classically inspired compositions and new age arrangements of classics. Ms Koldenhoven's 5-ocatve voice is the only one featured on this recording, in some places layered to give a choral effect. Most of the instrumentation is synthetic, though several songs include acoustic instrumental performances from guitar, English Horn, oboe, flue, didgeridoo, and percussion.

Infinite Voice is a delicate and beautiful recording that will appeal to fans of light classical vocals from the voices of equally talented singers such as Filippa Giordano, Hayley Westerna, or Sissel.

While Hollywood's penchant for unbridled nepotism has produced its share of questionable career results, we're happy to report that this soundtrack collaboration by Alex and Jake Parker for their director father Alan Parker's morally charged courtroom thriller is a notable exception. The two young composers combine their disparate backgrounds--Alex is an engineer versed in electronic studio compositions; Jake a classically trained orchestral composer--to create a diverse score that's a compelling argument for the stylistic freedoms imparted by postmodernism. Alex's work veers from the alterna-electronica of the opening "Another Bleeding Heart" (reminiscent of Alabama 3's Sopranos title song, "Woke Up This Morning") and the even darker "Waterside" to dense electronic soundscapes propelled by tribal drums and punctuated with jarring, abrasive samples. By contrast, Jake evokes Samuel Barber in his melancholy, string-driven cues, occasionally combining his traditionalism with his brother's contemporary electronic bent to evoke music that's as forceful as it is mysterious. Their savvy musical instincts also include source music that ranges from Puccini's Turandot to the contemporary country of Toni Price's "Just to Hear Your Voice" and the plaintive Latino folk flourishes of Correo Aereo's "La Pena Huasteca." This enhanced CD also contains the film's international trailer as well as Web links. --Jerry McCulley

The music for this film is devastating, heartbreaking, and moving just like the film it represents. Both are loaded with emotion and power, and this is an example of what a film score should be - an extension of the bones of the story. Excellent.

Don't waste your money on this soundtrack. They left the best song off. The song where they are at the party, eating food. Borrowed my brothers, and I gave it back to him two days later. I will say its a bit melodic, so it might make ok background music but that's it. Dony waste your XViii money on this.

i just watched the movie, and i was so impressed. the music helped it along very well. although seemingly redundant, there was a successful purpose to it. the simplicity of the music is key in the relationship to the film. if the music was too active, it might've distracted the audience from the movie and wouldn't have had the same effect. the beat to me seemed like a rhythmic heartbeat, which helped the mood of the movie, given this man is on deathrow, and there's only a short amount of time left. coupling of music to films is an art for me, and i loved this one. i recommend it for anyone who loves simple, yet effective beats, and violins (my all-time favorite instrument).

but the CD soundtrack by itself is a major disappointment. a common thread of beat and sound links all the tracks with one drum and one cello. After a few go-rounds, it becomes grating and tiresome. I would pass on this soundtrack and wait for the DVD for a few more dollars.

          Album Description

          Contemporary songs of great beauty and approachability. Most of the songs are world premiere recordings. This is also the first compact disk recording of Dan Locklair's "In the Almost Evening." Carol Sams wrote her three song cycle for the recording, based upon the poetry of Arthur Mampel. The album was recorded on location in Lagerquist Concert Hall on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University.

          I focus my review on the two most significant works: Webern's Concerto and Schoenberg's Wind Quintet. These are two of the most important (if not the most important), underplayed and misunderstood works of the first half of the 20th century Neither performance is terrible--indeed the ensemble carries their enthusiasm thru the potentially gruelling 45 minute Wind Quintet admirably. I must admit that this is one of the more charming recordings of Schoenberg's op. 26 currently available.

          Webern's op. 24 does not fare as well. Thruout, the clarity of the interaction between piano and ensemble is blurred and the dynamics are clumsily exaggerated. The (beautiful, it should be so very beautiful) second movement is played so slow I find myself waiting, with plenty of time to curse the players! In general, the conductor and ensemble seem unaware of the subtleties of the piece (including its profound and explicit references to Bach's 2nd Brandenburg Concerto).

          Famously, albeit sadly, conceived, Olivier Messiaen's finest chamber work is a dance with circumstance and a tremendous flowering in the face of adversity. Written while the composer was a wartime prisoner in 1941, Quartet for the End of Time sounds teetery, vulnerable, and brittle. But it also features shearing whips from the clarinet that make the creative turbulence unmistakable. Christoph Eschenbach's piano is astounding, playing quiet atmospheres in the second movement--and again in the final movement--that couple with the strings to set a diaphanous feel, one where light, scant though it is, enlivens the mood. Messiaen envisioned the colors, he recalled, as a partial result of limited food rations, and the shoddy instruments on which he and others gave the original performance (while still imprisoned) only accentuated how sensitively he shaped the piece's dynamics. Although it builds slowly, this is an inventively rhythmic piece, with the clarinet-led ensemble pelting quietude with motion. Note also that the quartet's first movement is Messiaen's first incursion into bird sounds, something which occupied him for the rest of his composing career. --Andrew Bartlett
