A Texas Blues Anthology.......2004-01-13

The disc includes blues in a variety of styles and from different time periods. There are two tracks by Leadbelly, the standard "Good Night, Irene" and "Where did you Sleep Last Night". These tracks show well the connection between some forms of the blues and folk music.

There are four tracks by Lightning Hopkins, which consist of rural, accoustic blues with bottleneck guitar. The tracks include "Shake that Thing" with lots of guitar work, "Have you ever loved a Woman" which includes the piano, "Mojo Hand", and "Lonesome Dog". Lighting Hopkins is important, but four tracks on a short CD anthology appears to me excessive.

The disc includes two outstanding tracks by Charles Brown. Brown sings and plays the piano in an urbane, laid-back way that seems to me tied closer to a smoke-filled nightclub in California than to Texas. Anyway, the two songs here "Livin' in Misery" and "Trouble Blues" are worth hearing for anyone coming to the blues.

The remaining seven tracks are divided among seven performers. There is a track by Dr. John, "Mean Cheatin' Woman" which is a delight in itself, but which includes little of Dr. John's Louisiana piano. Listeners coming to Dr. John need to hear him on the piano.

There is a single instrumental on the CD, "Texas Hop" by Pee Wee Crayton which features electric guitar and a honking sax. This is a lively, spontaneous track and shows the close connection between the blues and rock.

The remaining tracks are "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer", a blues standard by Amos Milburn which bears some resemblance in style to Charles Brown, and "Alimony Blues" by Eddie Clean Head Vinson. This track features a shouting vocal in slow tempo with clever lyrics such as : "She sued me for cruelty/Cause I hit her once or twice/ One night I tried to choke her/She said I wasn't nice."

There is good blues music on this CD but it doesn't represent the full range of Texas blues -- much less of Texas and Louisiana Blues. The main difficulty I had with the collection was the absence of program notes. The listener coming to the music will not get any information on the artists, on the dates of the recordings, the styles of the music, or why it is associated with Texas or Louisiana. This is unfortunate. The blues do indeed deserve to be better known and the listener coming to this music should be given some information on the music being performed and on the music.

I was lucky to receive this CD as a gift. At one time, I was active in blues preservation efforts and in listening to the blues. It was good to have the opportunity to get back to the music and to review a blues CD. There is good music on this disc, but the listener seeking to understand roots music as well as to enjoy some of it will need to look for additional sources.
