Album Description
Compiled from two back-to-back shows in Union, New Jersey, this historic live recording captures three CDs' worth of eclectic performances by the stripped-down quartet configuration of the JGB. Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter takes vocals on his compositions "Promontory Rider" and "Tiger Rose." Packed with key originals and plenty of covers, it's an essential snapshot of Jerry at his peak.
One of rock's true icons, Grateful Dead lead guitarist, vocalist, and goodwill ambassador Jerry Garcia pursued an eclectic array of folk, bluegrass, roots-rock, and R&B-influenced solo projects throughout his career. Recorded both solo and with the Jerry Garcia Band, his albums include a slew of classic covers and many songs that became an integral part of the Grateful Dead's live set.
Customer Reviews:
No Money for Koontz.......2007-04-25
I have spent thousands of dollars on Jerry and Dead shows, albums, etc. since my first Dead show in 1973.
I was about to purchase this item on Amazon when I saw the references to the Garcia Estate aka. Koontz.
I believe she is the antithesis of the Dead spirit and is only looking to make a buck. As a result, I pass on this purchase and will only buy through GDM - non Koontz profit.
Not the best JGB.......2007-02-26
3 stars is way too harsh for this recording, but there are better JGB discs out there. I'd start with the 1991 double disc recordings, then I'd go back the Saunders/Garcia era. Check out the Legion of Mary vol. 1 from Rhino, or the old Keystone discs. The problem with these discs, is that it's all Garcia. It's Jerry jamming, with 3 other guys backing him up. There are great moments in it, but in my opinion there is just nothing too special about this show that warrants this release.
Nice jammin'.......2006-06-30
I bought this based on how I liked another JGB cd (welcome to our world) and am pleased with the sounds on this one. Garcia shows his genius on these extended jams. I get an upbeat feeling while listening to this music. Even the synthesizer music, which is corny in the context of current synthetic sounds, adds to the groove. All three discs are great, especially if you are looking for some great guitar jamming sounds. If you like this one, I encourage you to take a look at the JGB's "Welcome to our world".
wow........2006-06-01
i can't believe this is out on cd. i just stumbled across it today! my late husband and i had this on tape years and years ago. absolutely my favorite dead/jerry related show. but the one we had.. had masterpiece, dear prudence and russian lullaby on it. it's really too bad they didn't include those with this release and it's the reason i'm giving it four stars. i did however find the complete version at the jerry garcia store. the extra disc is included free and has the late show.. entitled "way after midnight."
Not even close to the 1991 JGB Release.......2006-03-01
Kean is a better than average performance but pales in comparison to the 1991 2 CD JGB release which is the Cornell 1977 of JGB shows. Kean lacks electricity and magic typically found at the better shows.

Customer Reviews:
Syracuse defeats Landover.......2007-07-03
I like this Pick. But. I do not believe that the Landover show is anything special and I agree with another reviewer that the recording is sightly muffled, depressed or otherwise muted. This is too bad because there are some great songs in the Landover section. Ramble on Rose, Cassidy, Brown Eyed Women, Loser, Sugaree, Mississippi, Scarlet. Wow! Unfortunately, it is a pedestrian performance. The Scarlet Begonias section through St Steph, NFA and a brief following jam is the highlight of the Landover show. Also, songs like Piggy-o and Cosmic Chuck show up at the most inopportune times and will bum-out your trip considerably.
Having said the foregoing, allow me to state the following. The Syracuse show is awesome. Is it just me, or have you noticed that shows that start with Cold Rain and Snow seem to be among the Dead's greatest shows?
Highlights on disc three, the first set of the Syracuse show, include great versions of Cassidy, Candyman, Friend of the Dee-vil and GDTRFB.
Now, the BEST is CD 4. It is simply awesome. The Comes A Time is great. Eyes is played very fast, which I don't love, but it is kinda' fun to hear the guys mix it up. All of CD 4 is well played.
Other than the slightly depressed sound recording, discs three and four are simply great. Syracuse defeats Landover 2-0.
Maybe 4 and a 1/2.......2006-12-02
On of the the personal pet peeves of mine involves some of the altering that has been happening with Grateful Dead shows as they transfer them from tape to cd. Take, for example this performance of Friend Of The Devil, on all the old soundboard tapes from this era FOTD features backing vocals by Bob and Donna. On all the cd releases from this era Bob's voice is erased on FOTD. There are other times to where voices or keyboard parts are erased and this is happening on releases from throughout their career. As for these two shows themselves, they're very good. One the first disc Bertha, Let It Grow, Sugaree and the second set opener of Lazy Lightnin' -> Supplication rocks. On the second disc, the Scarlet Begonias and the Saint Stephen jam are great. Disc three starts with the last Cold, Rain and Snow for over a year. Disc four is a five from beginning to end.
Excellent Pick - Prelude to all the great shows of 1977.......2006-05-11
I was late in buying this pick; the playlist seemed a little dull compared to other DPs out there. All in all DP 20 seemed a bit of a sour pick. When I finally did pick this up I was very surprised. The list may be on the 'standard' side, but the playing is incredible. Both first sets are strong, the perfect set ups for the second set. Highlights include the opener Bertha and Sugaree on Disc one. Both second sets are stellar. Disc 2's (9/25/76 show 2nd set) highlights include one of the best Scarlet Begonias you will ever hear without Fire on the Mountain attached, the last (I think) performance of Cosmic Charlie, and a perfect St. Steve > NFA > St. Steve. The band is having a blast and after the line "One man gathers what another man spills" you can hear Garcia say "Yes he goes..." one second before the rhythm section kicks into NFA. Awesome.
Disc four is everything you could ever want from a second set at a Dead show. It starts with PITB with the mystique of '74 but with Hart and Kreutzman togeher again behind the drums. Plus, Phil is bouncing all over the place in the into. It segues into Wheel with a great outro jam that segues perfectly into Sam and Delilah (never heard this transition before) then into the ballad Comes a Time, then Drums > a short/ fast 8 minute Eyes of the World > before jamming and closing PITB.
Though it does not have that unique sound of 1977, it is a great intro to the Dead and a nice prelude to '77. And with two shows on one DP, with only a song edited (I think) from each show to get it to fit on 4 discs, this set is a bargain. Don't hesitate picking this up like I did. Well worth it.
Curiously Lackluster.......2005-07-11
I don't know, man. It's Dick's Picks like #20 that make
you appreciate how GREAT Dick's Picks 15, 12 and 1 are.
This is OK, but the band, to my ears, seems a bit lackluster...
Also there are two versions of several songs between CDs 1-2
and 3-4. It's not bad, mind you, but compared to picks 15, 12 and
1...well...it's curiously lackluster.
Outstanding Compilation Priced Well.......2005-03-31
I am fairly new to the Grateful Dead, this being the first compilation by them that I have purchased. That being said, I am overly satisfied at my purchase as this 4 Disc set offers some classic live performances of hit songs as well as others, at a low, affordable price. Probably the best feature to this compilation is that you get over 3 hours of extraordinary Grateful Dead music which all newcomers and Dead Heads can appreciate. We get nearly all the classics with some exceptional performances, especially on Discs 1 and 3. Also, we hear some wonderful impromptu Jams by the crew as well as a few drum solos.
I definitely found this to be the perfect buy for me, as someone looking into the music of the Grateful Dead. At the time of my purchase, I was only familiar a few of their most well known tracks, and now I adore numerous tracks.
I found the only low point of the compilation in its entirety was Disc 4, seemingly slower paced and less lyrically driven as the others. I find a few tracks on that Disc tend to drag on. Other than that small flaw that some will not even be bothered by, this is an excellent live set of discs from a great band, featuring some superb performances.
Song Highlights:
Bertha: A wonderful opening to the 1st disc, featuring some fantastic piano work by Keith Kreutzmann. Unfamiliar with this track, I immediately caught on to it, loving the sensational flow and lyrical delivery.
New Minglewood Blues: A great track, and I found it to be the superior of the other version found on Disc 3. A very fun song.
Dancing in the streets(Disc 2): A great track, with a beautiful flow to it and a great musical harmony. One of the highlights on Disc 2.
Sugar Magnolia: A classic Grateful Dead track, and a perfect way to end the disc. This is a very well orchestrated, extended version of the song.
It's all over now: A great performance by the crew, and a sensational song.
Friend of the devil: Possibly the most popular song on this compilation, we get a great performance once again, and Jerry Garcia does a great job with the lyrics.
Johnny B. Goode: A beloved song among Dead Heads, the Grateful Dead have a wonderful interpretation of Chuck Berry's hit song. Another great performance by the crew too.
So in conclusion, I don't see how you can go wrong with this compilation, as it displays the live talent of Grateful Dead, as well as giving us over 3 hours of sensational music at a low price. You won't regret purchasing this 4 Disc Set if you are a Dead Head fan, or are interested in their music.

Grandpa Jones.......2006-07-05
Great listening music. Takes me back to old Hee-Haw days. Enjoy the old music and people from my younger days listening to radio and then TV.
Grandpa is THE BEST!!!!!.......2006-02-26
Even if you didn't grow up watching Hee-Haw, you have to love Grandpa Jones. The songs are fun to listen to and the music is great. Whether you're a country fan or not, there's something for everyone on this Grandpa Jones album. A must have for any music fan's collection.
History from the Heart.......2004-01-04
I saw Grandpa Jones at the Opry many years ago, when he was still relatively young. At the time I bought a cassette of his music, long since worn out as cassettes do. I came across this CD by chance browsing through Amazon. A word to those who only know him from Hee Haw: Jones was an accomplished musician, singer and comedian whose considerable talent was not done justice on television.
I admit I couldn't put this CD down when it came in the mail. These are country songs like you certainly won't hear on or off the radio today. He is very, very far removed from what country music calls itself today. Jones became famous as a young man singing songs that were old then! He sings with an honesty of humor when the song calls for it. However, this small collection also demonstrates his fine singing voice on 'straight' songs. 'Daisy Dean' and 'I'm Tying the Leaves...' have never been surpassed. 'Chicken Don't Roost Too High' and 'How Many Biscuits Can You Eat' are enchanting in their frank celebration of what country life used to be like in my grandparents' time.
Now, for the recording: the sound quality is very variable. However, please don't let this deter you from purchasing one of Jones's albums. So many of these songs were recorded under less than ideal conditions, in pre-tape days. I've encountered the same limitations with other historical recordings, such as the original Carter Family. Perhaps it's because I also have a lot of historical opera that it truly doesn't bother me much. CEDAR and other filtration methods mask too much of the original character of recordings. I didn't expect these to sound modern, and they don't. Early Burl Ives sounds like this also. So what? Let's celebrate that we have these legendary artists preserved at all. When I can find a better copy of some of these songs I'll buy them. In the meantime, enjoy!
Great music, poor CD........2002-02-19
First, let me say that I love Grandpa Jones. It's bothersome to me that it's so hard to find his earlier recordings on CD. To the best of my knowledge, this CD released by King Records is the only CD currently available containing his classic King recordings. And it's a great idea: 28 classic Grandpa Jones tracks on one CD. Unfortunately, despite containing great recordings by Grandpa, I found the CD to be a waste of money and time. The sound quality varies greatly from song to song, with some being decent and some being downright awful. And the packaging is even worse. The only liner notes are the sparse ones stuck on the back cover. There's no recording info such as dates or musicians. And don't let the "Photos enclosed!" blurb on the cover fool you. There's simply a little collage of six photos on the backside of the front insert. I don't understand why King can't spend a little money or at least a little time when putting out CD's. My advice would be to leave this CD on the rack and wait for Westside or another label to put together a quality CD of Grandpa's King recordings.

Extraordinary music.......2006-08-08
Thoroughly enjoyable. I play it all the time at work - and I'm a legal assistant so I NEED stress relief!
Excellent.......2005-08-04
This is a good CD that offers a broad range of literature. As for Eastman Wind Ensemble, they seem to lack a little emotion, but they sure have the technical aspects down. But this consists of classics from centuries of music, from Baroque (Toccatta in D Minor by J.S. Bach) to the postmodern (...and the Mountains rising nowhere). So if you are a fan of timeless wind ensemble, then this is the CD for you (and fortunately, it's inexpensive :-).
Good program, occasionally shaky performance.......2004-06-22
Any Band enthusiast knows that the Eastman Wind Ensemble is the back bone of what we do, they were the first "wind ensemble" and the recordings are still standard. The original Mercury Monos of the 50s are all must-owns despite the poor recording quality occasionally. "Live in Osaka" is an outstanding cd, and is a great crash course in band music (who ever dreamed of putting the Holst Suite, Lincolnshire, Stars and Stripes and Festive all on ONE CD?!) but the performance falls short in a few places. There is some brass inaccuracy in Festive Overture, Stars and Stripes and a BIG splat at the end of the "March" in the Holst Suite #1. Don't get me wrong, this is overall a solid performance and a CD I enjoy listening to. I also question Hunsburger's tempos in Lincolnshire a tad, he takes off for the races in the first movement! Even though its great to have them all on one cd, get yourself a good mix of the Mercury Monos and some Cleveland Symphonic Winds cds if you want "standard band lit".
Eastman another very good cd..........2002-10-18
Eastman Wind ensemble is one of the best wind orchestras in the world ,in the same class as the Tokyo Kosei wind orchestra.
As always the eastman wind amazes us with theyr very good musicality and ensemble...another very good cd to own for any wind player....
simply magnificent ! .............2002-06-04
That an ensemble could play this beautifully is hard to imagine. If you've ever enjoyed a wonderful ensemble, a perfect concert, or a the thrill of a "tight", well-rehearsed concert band, you know then what to expect from this CD. The performances are great and the sound magnificent. The selection of music spans traditional to modern, and the ensemble rises to the occasion no-matter what the piece. A must-buy CD.

This three-disc set combines a second-set segment from a June 1974 show in Providence, Rhode Island, with the complete second set of a Boston Garden appearance recorded two nights later. The band was clearly in a playful mood that week, adding new twists to old songs and coming up with a number of dynamite jams out of thin air. Bassist Phil Lesh is particularly frisky and fertile on the Providence material. The collection begins with a distinctive "China Cat Sunflower" taken at an airier, slower groove than usual and bookended by interesting improvisational ideas. There's an exhilarating 15-minute "Spanish Jam" before they eventually encore with "Eyes of the World." The Boston show's second set opens with "Sugar Magnolia" and for the first time ever its "Sunshine Daydream" coda is broken off from its body and reattached at set's end. Also of note is a lovely "To Lay Me Down" and the far-ranging 28-minute jam that occurs after "Weather Report Suite," a ride unlike any other in Dead history. Throughout both shows, Jerry Garcia's guitar leads are as supple and fluid as they've ever been. Though it lacks the cohesiveness of one complete show, this 12th volume marks a true highpoint of the Dick's Picks series. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Don t let this one get away.......2007-06-26
The Loser from Aug 20 , 1987 is among the finest interpretations of music i ve heard w my ears . Other moments in music are ' around ' and can be found and discussed due to the fine output and availability of music recordings to us , music fans . Beethoven symphonies . Electronic music a la Klaus Schulze , Steve roach and robert rich ( and Bass communion Steve wilson ) . Well .. But so .. what about this live show ( s ) from 1974 in the Dead s early 70 s universe in time .
Going back to music as being well done ( as in that 87 show i mentioned above ) , it is done here with a style and sound only heard by this band and in that time period . For me , personally , the band didnt come around to kicking a*s until about 1993 , then 94 and finally 95 ( That is my objective opinion ) , and many may think other moments were their favorite or more potent . This band leaves quite a bit of ' stuff ' or subject matter ' in any sense to discuss .
The 3 disc DP is fine . The playing quality on the first two discs is very tight & strong . But when you get to the third disc , pay close attention . After the nice Weather report Suite and let it Grow , the band slides down to jam that begs for open mindedness . The Grateful dead in 1974 had the best ( yes they did ) sound system on the planet . The best technology to amplify their sound - called the Wall of sound and its described in detail in a book called Grateful Dead Gear .
If you are able when listening to the 23 minute jam that percedes Let it grow , you can almost climb inside Jerry s mind , and think ' We got an excelent sound system .. let s take it to places we are qualified to prove its greatness ' . The jam flows into a Mind left body jam ( 6 minutes duration ) , then back into a bridge that would take the band into US Blues . After US Blues , a short tuning break and a 3.5 minute Promised land . Then without stopping a GDTRFB . Show closer Sunshine daydream . Encore Ship of fools .
Rest in peace Jerry . Thanks for leaving us with such great stuff
great jams.......2007-04-12
lots of jams on this one
discs one and two feature some classic improv
Garcia really rocks on this one
Simply fantastic!.......2007-02-17
I've got a lot of Dick's Picks, and a lot of Grateful Dead in general, and this one is really my favorite. (I should mention, by the way, that I am a fan of Donna when she is in tune, and this was one of her better nights. Ok, I'll admit it - for me, there are some Dead songs that aren't complete without her, especially "Weather Report Suite," "Scarlet Begonias" and "Lay Me Down.")
The best parts about this particular Pick are the energy, the singing, the recording quality and, above everything else, the profound beauty of Jerry's solos. Quite frankly, there are Jerry moments on this Pick that are as perfect as anything he ever did that I've heard. Some of these solos are so heart wringing and soul-touching that they'll probably be part of whatever flashes through my mind as I leave this world.
The Dead as a whole were really on during this show, and it's one of the shows that I would highly recommend as a newcomer's first taste of what the Dead were really all about.
My personal tragedy is that I never saw them. In college I had "Skeletons from the Closet" and I assumed that that was the G.D. It wasn't until the late 90's, when I rented a "View From the Vault" on a whim that I finally understood, too late, what they really were.
Luckily, we have enough taped music from them to wind it around the backside of the moon and back to earth six or seven times. Dick's Picks 12 is some of the best I've heard yet.
just exactly perfect.......2006-10-07
This features some incredible and wide ranging music. If you like China Cat Sunflower (and who doesn't), you'll never hear another one like this!
But, there's plenty of other reasons to buy this... top to bottom, this ones packed with gems. If you like creative jamming, this ones a must.
The best of the best. .......2005-10-16
I have listened to and own a lot of Dick's Picks and this is the best of all the volumes I've heard.
Disc !: The best "China Cat Sunflower" in my collection, hands down. Then, an incredible jam out of "Truckin'" that keeps going for about 20 minutes and then morphs into a sweet "Wharf Rat" and "Sugar Magnolia." Classic stuff. 5/5
Disc 2: Some of the best Dead songs performed damn-near flawlessly. "Eyes of the World" and "Scarlet Begonias" are a bit short, but they still have a distinct punch to them. "Seastones" may sound grating to some people, but I actually enjoy it and think it's a good transition between the end of one show and the beginning of another. "To Lay Me Down" makes one of its rare appearences and it's just plain LOVELY. The other songs are all good and well-played, but I wouldn't say this is a perfect disc. The fun of 6/28/74 is just about to get started. 4.5/5
Disc 3: And now, the moment you've all been waiting for: a 27-minute track simply titled "Jam." And "Jam" it does! Lots of themes are touched on... "Space," "Mind Left Body," "Dark Star," ect. What really makes this jam worthwhile is the fact that the band is so fluid and moves between the themes with great ease. Then we get perhaps the greatest "U.S. Blues" in Dead history, which isn't really much of a surpirse given what came before. A glorious "Sunshine Daydream" and fairly hard-to-find "Ship of Fools" close the set. 5/5
Conclusion: I think this pick can be summed up in one word: "epic." If you like the Dead at all, this should be in your collection. It's a very good summary of the crazy stuff that could happen in 1974. Sure, '77 and '68 might have been more consistantly excellent... but when they were on in '74, they were on much more intensely than in any other era.

A Rare Gem.......2001-10-27
Katharine Boyes plays the music on this CD as though she is presenting it to each of us personally. Her obvious affection for the selections shows in the performance, and the exquisite touch and the virtuosity playing, make this CD a must for the keyboard lover's collection. This is music to be listened to and enjoyed any time one's spirit is in need of a lift or inspiration.
