Album Description

You probably know Joe Rogan as the host of the hit show FEAR FACTOR. Or it could be from his turn as Joe Garrelli on NEWS RADIO. Or as the host of the MAN SHOW. Or even more recently as the spokesperson for the UFC. What you may not know is that Joe Rogan is one of the top comedians in the country. He sells out big rooms from coast to coast on the strength of his fantastic comedy and this disc solidifies him as one of the most important voices in the country. Joe's hard-edged, uncensored, and, yes, smart view of the world shines through on his new album (his first, I'm Gonna Be Dead Someday (Warner Bros.) received critical acclaim and solid sales). With sharp insights on the Middle East, sex, religion, and a host of other topics, there are no taboos.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good CD.......2007-06-08

I had only learned that Joe Rogan did stand-up comedy when I heard him on a radio talk show about a year ago. He was quite funny on that appearance so when I found out about this CD I decided to pick it up. I can't say that this effort puts him among the ranks of the all-time great comedians, but I would certainly say that he is one of the funnier people out there currently. It isn't wall to wall laughs, but he has some very humorous takes on several issues and delivers the material well. This isn't one of those 'dude, ya gotta listen to this' CDs, and it won't become legendary, however, you can definitely listen to it a couple times through and draw some good laughs.

5 out of 5 stars I listened to it 5 times.......2007-05-31

I figured I owed this CD a good word. I found the material to be funny, original and, rare for comedy CDs, it stood up to repeat listenings. Rogan is a pretty real guy and his material seems very succinct to his personality and delivery. Many of his routines are very well thought out and developed. The impersonations are well done and add a lot to the immersion of his stories.

Rogan goes out of his way to be articulate and avoids stepping on anyones toes- Some subjects probably seem 'edgy', but he sticks to illustrating a point and doesnt try to score 'un-politically correct' points. The doofy looking CD cover might suggest otherwise.

The Terrence McKenna observation scores extra points in my book. McKenna is the second comming of Christ- Why wouldn't you cite Jesus II.

If he has more better material kicking around (like someone here suggested), I want it on a CD.

5 out of 5 stars I laughed myself sick.......2007-05-29

The only reason I bought this CD is because I am a huge UFC fan who like's Joe's personality as a commentator (also I thought the title "Shiny Happy Jihad" was pretty funny). Honestly I didn't think it would be that good when I bought it. BOY WAS I WRONG!!! I was listning to it on the bus and people were staring at me like I was a recently escaped mental patient. I was laughing uncontrollably. I eventually turned it off but kept thinking about what he was saying and even repeating it to myself in my head made me laugh out loud. Joe Rogan is officially my favourite comedian and that is a big statement considering I listen to a LOT of comedy.

2 out of 5 stars Countdown until Amazon deletes this one, too.......2007-05-21

Joe has said that this album is "one of the few pieces of my own work that I can sit through without wanting to shut it off and run out of the building," but having listened to it, I feel as though this sentiment is more a function of his decreasing standards than one of objective quality. While I've never watched any of his horrible television shows for more than thirty seconds at a time, I've been a fan of Joe's standup for a good seven years now. I've seen him perform several times during the period when he claims he was too distracted by his television career to really focus on his act, and every single one of those times he had better material than is on this album. Some of the routines here date back to 2003, but whatever it is that's kept them kicking around so long, it's not quality. He's obviously still struggling to be as edgy and offensive as ever, he just isn't succeeding at much other than becoming a tragically predictable parody of every drug-addled conspiracy theorist who can't get through a conversation without citing Terrence McKenna. If this is what he's going to produce when he's focused solely on his standup act, then NBC needs to give him another three prime-time shows in a hurry before he turns into Woody Harrelson.

It's still better than Dane Cook, but I expected a lot more from Joe, and I would not recommend it to anyone who did not have a postcount in the tens of thousands on the monument to sycophantry that is his internet forum.

1 out of 5 stars not soon enough!.......2007-01-10

Disappointed in the content; wasn't fully sure what to expect but I would have liked more singing and less attempt at noxious comedy. Not really even funny come to think about it, noxious or otherwise. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't.

5 out of 5 stars really funny cd.......2006-07-12

when i got this i knew who joe rogan was but didnt know how funny he could be and trust me you are going to laugh when you listen to his cd. hes vulgar which at times is funny but is over used at times too. the funniest tracks are the 1st one, the tigers f******, anna nicole smith, and #6. highly recommended if you are in need of a great laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Not "just for men" ..........2006-06-15

I actually purchased this cd and his "Belly of the Beast" DVD a few years ago. But I just re-listened to all of it again because I needed a hearty laugh. This does the trick every time!

I wanted to add my two cents here because I don't think his humor can solely be enjoyed by men. I'm a woman and I think he's hilarious. Yeah, he's crass and vulgar--so what? That's exactly what makes him so good. He's real. I think the best comedians are those with the ability to turn their insides out and give us the rawest, most eye-opening picture of who they are and how they see the world. Done and done.

And even if you don't believe everything he believes, you'd be remiss not to realize that he's a clearly a smart cookie. He's not just throwing out BS on topics he knows nothing about. If nothing else, you've got to respect that. Not to mention his obvious talent in the delivery of his jokes--can't wait until I can see his act in person.

The bottomline is that if you don't laugh, maybe it's time to check for your pulse.

4 out of 5 stars Fear is Not a Factor, but Funny is........2006-03-15

Most people know Joe ROgan from Fear Factor, and this CD is a very different Joe Rogan if that is the only thing you know about him. The humor is Raw and Uncensored but very funny all the same. This CD is a 45 minute "Dick Joke" but it's great! Joe Rogan puts forth a VERY solid effort on this CD and it was worth the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good! It's like Stanhope at 60%.......2006-02-17

Sorry Joe but your buddy Doug's got you beat in stand up. I really do like this album though. I thought it was going to be some middle of the road bs. Very happy with how dirty it was. I'd buy another album if he put it out.

Your eyes do not deceive you--that is indeed the actor Joe Pesci on the cover of this album of "songs," which includes one celebrity "rap." In the annals of celebrity musical undertakings, Pesci's disc does not approach the sublimely horrible work of, say, William Shatner. And the disc is intended to be humorous, as Pesci revisits the character Vincent LaGuardia Gambini from the Oscar-winning hit My Cousin Vinny. Fans of that film and of Pesci's wise-guy character acting will no doubt look beyond the disc's major faults and just enjoy it as a good laugh. It does bear noting, however, that the guy has no business even pretending to sing (let alone rap); he's more in love with words like "bitch" and "fuck" than a hyperactive delinquent 13-year-old, and the lounge- and swing-inspired music is uninspired hack work. There is a cleaned-up version of the disc, but it's hard to imagine there being much left after the edits. --Mike McGonigal

    1 out of 5 stars riiiiiiiiight.......2007-03-22

Imagine a modern day Perry como, who can't sing, making an italian-based album, that is both stupid and profane. This is just bad. I'm sorry, terrible. Wait, why am i sorry? Joe pesci is the one who should be sorry.
There's a rock song and rap song. Yes, a rap song. The only semi tolerable song is, "take your love and shove it." Add two bad christmas songs, and duet with...hold on...marisa tomei? It's all-together bad. Listening to it, i just sit and laugh how horrible it is. Seriously, he shouldn't have.

3 out of 5 stars you could do better.......2006-11-03

a fun CD but you'd do much much better with Falling in Love Again (Joey Defrancesco/joe Doggs pesci). Gambini is a 1 or 2 times listen. Love Again will spin over & over Again on yor player....and in the car (loud!) with the top down.

    3 out of 5 stars It ain't sinatra,but it ain't telly savalas either...........2006-10-22

I am not sure what to make of Joe Pesci's album...He sings ok,but then so do I(while in the shower)and nobody has asked me to record an album...A lot of the stuff on the album was intended to be funny,if swear words, dirty mouth and gutter talk is your idea of humor...but even with all of the profanity thrown in the songs are hardly amusing...So is this a vanity item for Pesci,or does he expect to be taken seriously, either as a vocalist,or as the gutter-mouth generation's Lou Monte? In any event the album is a novelty, like the two albums that Telly Savalas put out when he was riding high as teevee's"Kojak",or the drivel the star trek gang has foisted upon the world over the years...Sure,Pesci does manage to sound better than Savalas,Shatner,John Wyane(whose patriotic album is excruciating to listen to),Robert Mitchum(who actually thought his 1950s vocal effort was first class),and all of the other non-singer actor-celebrities that have put out similiar fare, but then MOST people with even a modest singing voice sound better than these people do...

3 out of 5 stars Little Joe sure can sing!.......2005-02-10

This is actually Joe Pesci's second album. His hard to find first album came out in 1968 and consisted mostly of covers of Beatles and Bee Gees songs (I actually have a copy of it). Thirty years later, he released this second album. It is ostensibly performed as the character he played in My Cousin Vinny, but some of the songs don't seem to be performed by Vinny. For example, in the song "Wise Guy", he refers to himself as "Pesci". Anyway, most of the songs here are played for laughs, but some of them are done more or less seriously. The songs that are played for laughs are fairly amusing, although most of laughs come from hearing Joe sing vulgarities. As for the serious songs, they are fairly decent, but Joe is no Tony Bennett. But I will admit that this album is better than most albums recorded by actors.

    5 out of 5 stars Better than a novelty..........2004-03-18

A lot of reviewers ignore or dismiss a truth in this disc: Pesci's not a bad jazz singer. While it's pretty obvious that most of the songs on this disc are clearly intended to go straight to the hands of Dr. Demento ("Take Your Love and Shove It" is justly praised as the Single Man's Lament), some, like the sublime "How Do You Like Me, So Far" have a smooth smokiness that cries out for a bourbon and soda. I'd be perfectly happy to hear Pesci follow it up, this time freed from all expectations of camp. Pretty decent.

Philips's collection of major works that have propelled Gavin Bryars to New Music stardom is an effective overview of his music. The longest work is his Cello Concerto, handsomely played by Julian Lloyd Webber with a big, colorful tone and sustained intensity throughout its contemplative half-hour. A comparable mood pervades the bright tintinnabulating textures of the whimsically titled One Last Bar, Then Joe Can Sing. Similar as well, in their attractive serenity and suppressed sadness, are many of the other works here, prime among them the viola concerto in all but name, The North Shore, a tone painting of the rugged cliffs of northeast England. Adnan Songbook, settings of six poems by Lebanese poet Etel Adnan, are beautifully sung by soprano Valerie Anderson and delicately scored for a small ensemble. Bryars's biggest hits, The Sinking of the Titanic and Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet, have inspired him to numerous reworkings and capsuled fragments. They're represented by Titanic Lament, depicting a hymn tune dissolving into gray, watery textures, and two very different four-minute versions of Jesus' Blood, both with Tom Waits. Some will find Bryars's brand of minimalism veering too closely to New Age music, but others will immerse themselves in a sound world of originality and refined beauties. --Dan Davis

The musical reconstructions industry keeps gathering pace, but few works have attracted as much attention as Mahler's 10th Symphony. Joe Wheeler (who died in 1977) was a brass-playing British civil servant with a passion for Mahler. This completion (itself in an edition by the conductor here, Robert Olson) uses the leaner orchestration of the composer's later years. But does it sound Mahlerian? Certainly more so than Remo Mazzetti's 1997 version, but neither caps Deryck Cooke's acute sense of authentic detail and color in his legendary edition.

Still, this is a recommendable release--at its bargain price. The string sound takes the ear--impressively full, if sometimes a notch too sweet. This raises again the questions of whether Mahler's manic side needs pointing up, and how far performances of the 10th have to drive home his sense of impending death and the tragedy of his wife's unfaithfulness. It's a matter of taste. The best buy remains Simon Rattle's Berlin Philharmonic performance. --Andrew Green

4 out of 5 stars Sounds like real Mahler to me........2007-03-20

After reading all the earlier reviews by listeners, I felt compelled to add my thoughts to the list. My favorite Mahler X remains BBC's Wigglesworth Cooke II version live recording. Olson's present studio version becomes my favored non-live take. Olson's credentials are above reproach. He is the conductor for Colorado's annual Mahlerfest in Boulder. This recording struck me as a committed, very personal, and honest rendition. I would like to hear more of this conductors Mahler. I understand that his Mahlerfest live recordings are available via the festival's web page. I think that his work here deserves respect.

3 out of 5 stars I'm with Santa Fe: sub-par all the way around.......2006-12-25

It's a pity that editors such as Carpenter and Wheeler aren't around, so that we can find just how much of what happens in these kinds of recordings are due to what they - "they" being the editors - wanted, and what is simply a matter of the conductor's own perogative. Either way, we have to live with the results. I really feel that Joseph Wheeler's is the weakest of all the completions recorded so far. I like his quicker tempi (or Olson's) for the two scherzo movements. But Wheeler's first scherzo has a fair amount of unidiomatic percussion writing for late Mahler, especially with the snare drum and bass drum; not to mention Wheeler's strange underemployment of the low pitch instrumets: double basses, tuba, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, etc. In other words, it's very light in the bass. The second scherzo is also relatively quick, but also wants in good-old modern German "expressionism"; especially in regards to the sudden outbursts towards the end of the movement. Worse of all, is Wheeler's very awkward transition from the fourth movement, into the (formerly) slow introduction that begins the fifth movement. He links them with two bass drum strokes, as Mahler indicates, but they're placed right next to each other (I think Rattle has proven that a single stroke is better). That is to say, Wheeler (Olson? Naxos?) hardly waits at all before making the second stroke on the drum. Stranger yet, is the real fast tempo for the ascending lines that Mahler had clearly indicated to be played by a solo tuba; now replaced by the double basses. It's hard to guess what Wheeler was trying to get at here. Too bad, because his version - and/or Olson's conducting - really comes to life in the faster paced development section, located just before the reprise of the first movement's harrowing, "expressionistic" anti-climax. But just as with the Cooke version (most performances, that is), the last half of the fifth movement falls right back to sleep: limp, prostrate, almost passionless. It almost makes one wonder what all those psychological freakouts earlier on were all about. Naxos' sound quality leaves plenty to be desired as well. The short "Purgatorio" movement, by the way, is done rather well here - slower than usual, and not at all "skipped over" as it almost is on the highly touted Michael Gielen M-X (sorry, not a fan).

Recommendations? I know that many folks feel that the Clinton Carpenter version goes too far in becoming Mahler/Carpenter. But at least Carpenter's orchestration and pastiche composing is more idiomatic of late Mahler, if also conjuring up early Alban Berg at times as well. Regardless, the Andrew Litton recording (Delos) is far better played and recorded than this one. In addition, either recording of either of Mazzetti's two versions is a safe bet (he revised it before the Lopez-Cobos/Cincinnati one). As far as the reliable but also under-cooked Cooke version goes, I think it's darn near impossible to beat the original Eugene Ormandy one - FINALLY reissued on a decent sounding CD. I'm not a big fan of the Barshai version, but it DOES come with a very fine performance of Mahler's fifth symphony - all at a bargain price.

        2 out of 5 stars A sub-par performance of a sketchy Mahler completion.......2006-08-10

It's no surprise that Robert Olson's recording of the Wheeler Mahler Tenth is the only one commercially available. The more widely accepted Deryck Cooke version displays much greater imaginaiton in its orchestration and greater fidelity to Mahler's style. One reviewer here who admires the Wheeler completion says that it's unfair to dismiss it as "incomplete", "underdeveloped", "sparse" or "simple." Actually, those words apply all too well. Wheeler was a brass player, and he favors the horns monotonously in Scherzo I. HIs worst idea is to speed up the bass drum thwacks at the end of Scherzo II and the opening of the finale. They are robbed of all gravity n their emotional impact.

In fairness, the Wheeler Tenth isn't done any favors by the scrawny-sounding Polish orhcestra, and Mr. Olson is obviously more a scholar than a conductor. Two of these movements are full-fledged Mahler (the opening Adagio and third-movement Purgatorio), which he conducts like an amateur. In all, this CD exists to satisfy the curiosity of Mahler fans who hunger for every completion of the Tenth, no matter what.

4 out of 5 stars Best overall Mahler 10 realization gets a performance; needs a better performance/recording.......2006-01-25

Although the Cooke has things to like about it (I'll pass on the Carpenter and have not heard the Mazzetti), after getting the chance to listen to the Wheeler for the first time, I became convinced this is the best overall realization. It does have a starkness that points it toward the post-tonal 20th century.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if somebody comes out with a "Wheeler 2," trying to nuance it with some of the best features of Cooke.

Now, as for the sound quality. I believe most the problems here, such as the weak bass drum in the "death knell," is due to recording/engineering quality of this CD. Part of it may also be due to this particular orchestra and conductor.

That said, I would LOVE to hear Boulez record this. I'm sure the result would be his best Mahler ever.

3 out of 5 stars Would it have sounded like this?.......2005-08-02

There is a real problem with any version of the 10th. Despite whoever did the completion I have long felt that the final version in Mahler's hand would not sound like this. Another reviewer said that it really does not matter who did the completion as they all sound about the same. I tend to agree but I have still thought that the Cooke version was best.

This is the only budget version of the 10th and it is as good as any out there. I have liked Rattle and Chailly but this version is decent.

Too bad Mahler never really finished his 10th, and Bruckner his 9th, and Elgar his 3rd and Sibelius his 8th and Tchaikovsky his 7th. The list goes on. I understand someone once claimed there is a Beethoven 10th. Now THAT would be interesting !

Wow! I haven't heard something with this type of sound since about 2 minutes ago when I farted myself it went off with a bang. This cd is great. It has assome comedy with a mixture of disgustingly smelly humor. I luagh at this every time i hear it and I think you will too. So from silent but disgusting to loud and squishy farts bottled fresh this cd has it all. I stink oops! I mean i think that you should buy this cd. This cd makes fun of songs. And it will leave you with your pants (messed) if you listen to it too much. So I hope you enjoy

5 out of 5 stars The nuttiest people I've ever heard.......2001-10-04

The First time I heard about the Fart Guys it was from a friend of mine. Boy, when I heard the Fart Guys I couldn't stop laughing!!!! One of my favorite parts from the CD is "Fartline". I won't spoil it by telling you what it is but when you hear it and understand boy is it hilarious!! I also have another song that is similar to the Fart Guys called Mr. Methane It's not as funny as the Fart Guys but it's still funny. I think Mr. Methnane goes about right up there with the Fart Guys. If people try make a CD that's just as funny as th Fart Guys it probably will be funny but not as funny as the Fart Guys, at least in my opinion. If you're looking for a CD with a lot of comedy and farting, this is your CD. Don't worry, you won't regret it.
