As the guitarist in Emmylou Harris's Nash Ramblers, Jon Randall thrilled audiences with his clean and exemplary playing and his angelic harmony vocals. Only 23 when he shared a Grammy for Harris's live At the Ryman, Randall went on to stake his own claim, with uneven results. Willin' is his third album (on his third label) in five years, and while it lacks a certain cohesiveness--and occasionally, as on Lowell George's title cut, suggests that he might not have the personality to be a front man--it's chock full of great rootsy musicianship, from both the pickers (Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Kenny Vaughan) and the vocalists (Kim Richey, Lorrie Morgan, Harris). Randall's marriage (to Morgan) was coming unwound as he recorded much of this, and the tracks that trace that pain ("Can't Hurt Anymore," "Sweet Lorretta," "Blew Me Away," and "Lonely Street") throb with barely contained emotion. At those moments, Willin' shines like a just-discovered jewel. --Alanna Nash

As the first group to be released on the Neptunes' Star Trak imprint, Virginia-based rhyme duo and brothers Malice and Pusha T have at their disposal the most clever producers in music today. And they literally exhaust this fine privilege. There are so many legitimate danceable club hits on their debut that you're pretty much forced to ignore the CD's lyrical shortcomings. The album blasts off with "Grindin'," the street-buzz single of the 2002 summer, with its heavy, old-school Run DMC-style drum claps. Similarly, "I'm Not You" flaunts an infectious calypso-pan loop, which makes you pay no heed to the dozens of street-drug verses. The hedonism continues on "Let's Talk About It," with the braggadocio of Jermaine Dupri, and the catchy, hook-driven "Young Boy." Overall, the beats are ridiculously good, but the emcees are quite average. Sorry, no instrumental version available at this time. --Dalton Higgins

"Lord Willin'" - Neptunes Please, The Clipse Disappoint, Pharrell's Omnipresent & Guests Are Heavy.......2006-12-25
In celebration of Clipse's critically acclaimed 2006 sophomore album, "Hell Hath No Fury", I've decided to check out "Lord Willin'", the supposably forgotten debut album of rapping brothers Pusha T & Malice. Since I haven't listened to "Hell Hath No Fury" just yet, I can't compare it to this debut album, but "Lord Willin'" stands on its own as a satisfying, but flawed, record.
If there's anything that makes "Lord Willin'" stand out from other average Hip-Hop albums, it's The Neptunes, who produce the album in its entirety. The beats are harder and far more thrilling and invigorating than the majority of their more recent efforts, especially on the minimalist-beat-driven hustler's anthem "Grindin'" & "Young Boy", a lyrically reflective club jam driven by Pharrell William's lively hook and bombastic Funk-inflected horns strangely -if not ironically- reminiscent of Beyonce's R&B/Funk club jam "Work It Out", another Neptunes concoction.
Unfortunately, one of the album's problems lies with Clipse themselves. There's no denying the fact that the two are strong rappers -their vocal delivery is cold, harsh, strong, fearless and emotionless- but it's hard to tell Malice & Pusha T apart due to their similar flows and vocals. That doesn't mean that they can't write good lyrics - songs like the aforementioned "Grindin'", the gloomy, anthemic "Virginia" and the straightforward album standout "Cot Damn" (feat. Pharrell Williams as hook singer and everyone else -Ab-Liva & Roscoe P Coldchain- as rappers) prove otherwise, while many of the other album's tracks display their knack for clever and inventive wordplay.
It is at this point, however, that we realise the album's second fundamental flaw - its lack of substance. Songs like the admittedly addictive "When The Last Time" -featuring Pharrell Williams as hook rapper & Kelis as severely underused R&B songstress, who is restricted to a simple vocal refrain on the song's bridge over The Neptunes' heavy synths and faint guitar loop- & the self-explanatory "Ego" resort to the ways of misogyny, commercialism and materialism that has rapidly deteriorated modern-day Hip-Hop, while other songs like "Ma, I Don't Love Her" (feat. another underutilised R&B singer, Faith Evans) & "Gangsta Lean" (feat. Pharrell as -you guessed it!- hook singer) are virtually devoid of true emotion or sentiment.
The final problem I have with this album is the excess guest appearances. Not only do Clipse lack emotion or passion in their delivery, but they also lack any form of personality or individuality that could've otherwise separated them apart from not only each other, but the album's other truckload of guest artists. Whether or not Pharrell Williams is credited as an official guest artist is of little concern, since he drops a lively contribution (mainly a hook) on almost all of the tracks on the album. While that may be good for the memorability factor or the quality of the actual tracks, it also highlights the Clipse's inability to consistently craft solid, infectious hooks. Other guests include all of the aforementioned artists (Ab-Liva, Roscoe P Coldchain, Kelis, Pharrell Williams, Faith Evans), Famlay ("Famlay Freestyle"), Fabolous ("Comedy Central", where is style is easily more recognizable), Jermaine Dupri ("Lets Talk About It") and Jadakiss & Styles P of the Lox ("I'm Not You"). The two remixes of "Grindin'" also feature NO.R.E., Baby & Lil' Wayne on the first remix, while Sean Paul, Kardinal Offishall & Bless appear on the latter.
As a whole, this is a solid debut, but is too flawed to be deemed a classic. The Clipse should consider themselves lucky to have The Neptunes on their side because they, along with Kelis, tend to bring the best out of the production duo. 3 stars!

Can't Wait For Another One.......2006-12-01
I got Lord Willin for my birthday when it came out a few years ago and to tell you the truth I expected a mediocre album at best. I figured that the singles were a little too hot for the rest of the album to be as good and I was wrong. First if anything the only negative thing is that it's only 15 tracks and the remixes end the album, because it seems like Clipse had more tracks to put on here. They seem like the type that could fill out an album with at least 19 tracks and still keep it decent to get 4 or 5 stars which is what there new album will probably do. What I like most about Clipse is there lyrical style and that it is a little different from other recent duos and they take time to work on their album instead of just throwing out ok albums every year. They say that they didn't really want to do rap at first but you can feel that they actually put heart into their craft. They have the ability to take production like Pharells and still make it sound grimy but make hits at the same time. The production was hot also, lots of Pharell beats and a few guest appearances but Clipse doesn't let them over cloud them and I hope that they can go above and beyond themselves on this upcoming release.
HOT!!!.......2006-11-24

When Jon's marriage to Lorrie disintegrated.......2005-08-18
Although the songs for this album were recorded over a long period of time (about a year and a half), this album hangs together well. Jon's personal life was in turmoil, with the break-up of his marriage to Lorrie Morgan occurring at around that time. Jon pleads with her directly in one song (Sweet Loretta) while on another song (Lonely street) Lorrie actually provides harmony vocals.
Jon wrote or co-wrote all the songs except for the title track (a cover of a Little Feat song) and while Lorrie isn't actually mentioned in any songs except Sweet Loretta, it's clear that she was in Jon's thoughts when he wrote most of the other songs. The opening song (like Baby make the sun go down) is quite upbeat - perhaps Jon was remembering better times - but the only other upbeat song here is Breaking all the rules, which (as far as I know) is about a different couple, not Jon and Lorrie. If, as I assume, most of the other songs are autobiographical, it seems that Jon doesn't know why Lorrie left him. In one song (Can't find the words), Jon sings that he can't find the words that told her goodbye.
This is a very sad album and well worth a listen. Fans of Lorrie will, of course, want this, but there is much here that will appeal to most country music fans.
Willin to Bet.......2005-01-12
Jon Randall will be huge! Willin is a showcase for his talent and mindset. Hope his 2005 CD has the same feel. He is the next Vince Gill, with a little more pain. In that context, Willin will be a collectors cd.
HE SHOULD BE AT THE VERY TOP OF THE CHARTS GIVE HIM 6 STARS.......2004-09-03
This music is pure gold,it reached me by luck in France ! a very delicate country with extremely good vocals and arrangements, a quite original music that I would 100 % recommend to anyone liking sounds like Everly brothers or such vocal experts (but more modern, he is young...).This is at last quite different and original compared to too "standardized" country we hear on the radio. If I hear this voice and this style, I will know this is Jon within a few seconds ! this is how you can recognise best true and original talents !
To complete the dream, recording is just perfect,I really wonder why we do not hear his records everywhere. Come on Amazone ! bring us more cds by this strong and remarkable artist I just saw on the web that he had 3 cds produced and you offered me two (god, one more ordered today!!)but most of all,
Go on Jon and keep trust in you, your music is real gold for those who got the chance to hear it ! a few days ago you reached France...you know this is a long way...Thierry Cordonnier
The Most Beautiful Voice Ever.......2002-02-07
Jon Randall isn't a country singer, he's an artist. His songs are haunting, he's amazing with a guitar, and his voice is beautiful. Buy Willin', then look for What You Don't Know, his 1995 release on RCA.
Jon Randall - Willin'.......2000-06-07
A friend lent me his copy of this and insisted that I listen. I was very impressed, bought my own copy and wondered why I had never heard of Randall before... he should be at the top of the charts. This is a terrific nuevo country record (shouldn't really be slapped with the country stigma). Do yourself a favor - pick this C.D up!

Here's a story that must be told:
1 Day, 2 YOUNG BOYS named Pusha T & Malice, who lived in VIRGINA, happened to start GRINDIN'. 1 Day, Pusha cheated on his COT D**N girl, when she asked "what happened?", he said MA, I DON'T LOVE HER! After cutting a FAMLAY FREESTYLE, pusha asked malice, WHEN THE LAST TIME you heard a song like this? malice thought pusha was EGO trippin' and needed to watch COMEDY CENTRAL to learn better material. after entering rehab, the nureses told pusha LET'S TALK ABOUT IT, u know, ur GANGSTA LEAN. well, pusha said, I'M NOT U!

Great Late-Period Boogie-Rock.......2004-12-01
Ignore the editorial review calling this "hair metal." Or better yet, take it like the humor in the movie SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE. This is definitely NOT hair metal. What it is is great late-period boogie-rock in the vein of Foghat or Ted Nugent. Like its three successors, READY AN' WILLIN' shows Whitesnake to be an English metal version of Southern rock- honest and raw, yet melodic- rather than the high-class version of Poison they would become on their 1987 album. In fact, in my view, kids who compare this to the album featuring "Still Of The Night" should have to complete 300 hours of community service in order to graduate from high school. Listen to this once and you'll see why.
