No finish line in sight........2001-08-22
I first heard about Henry Mancini while he was doing the Peter Gunn series with Blake Edwards. That music was so lively, that I began paying attention to this Mancini person. It wasn't long before my record cabinet began to swell with his music. My wife asked if there was anyone else out there recording. I said, probably, but who cares? Then, in 1965, The Great Race was released. Of course I purchased the album, and played it literally to death. That was thirty-six years ago, and I still play that record, or the tape I made of it. Now, it's available on CD. That's a no-brainer. I attended several concerts that Henry gave from 1966 to 1981. I was never disappointed. I met him and talked with him several times. He was a most gracious, and patient man. He is sorely missed on the cinema and popular music scenes. His music will live for many eons, and The Great Race will always be in my heart and head.
It's Mancini--no more to say.......2001-08-07
Did Henry Mancini ever write a bad soundtrack? This one shows his incredible range, from the romantic (and Oscar nominated) "Sweetheart Tree", to the livelier "He Shouldn'ta Hadn'ta Oughtn'ta Swang on Me" and "Pie-in-the-Face Polka." In between, there's a royal waltz, Professor Fate's ominous theme "Push the Button, Max" and a title piece that manages to work in every All-American tune from "America the Beautiful" to "Dixie."
All in all, great music for a fun movie.
One of Mancini's best film scores.......2000-04-27
This is one of the all-time favorites among Mancini's fans: when it was reviewed at the HM site "Henry Mancini Forum", it won the best comments. It is filled with music for slapstick scenes, marches, a waltz, a lullaby, a beautiful love theme (with lyrics by Johnny Mercer) and Dorothy Provine's (who plays saloon singer Lily Olay) funny interpretation of "He Shouldn't-a, Hadn't-a, Oughtn't-a Swang On Me". A great score for probably the most expensive (and longest) road movie ever made.
The soundtrack is as wacky as the Blake Edwards movie........1999-11-16
I have the LP a very rare find. I am happy that it is finally in cd form. It is Mancini at his silly best. The only problem I have with this album is the Pie Fight Polka is not as long as the pie fight in the movie. That and the song The Lover Tree is just too sickening. Overall, it kicks. If you liked the movie you'll want this sountrack.

1994 all over again........2006-03-18
I have never seen Guardian live (probably never will now) but I have a total of 7 of their albums and "Swing, Swang, Swung" is definitely their greatest album in my collection. The album may be 12 years old now (can you believe it!) but out of my collection of hundreds of cd's (from Yanni to P.O.D.) this album will ALWAYS be one of my top 10 favorites.
GUARDIANS ULTIMATE ALBUM.......2005-11-27
I will start this review by saying that Guardian is one of my favorite bands. Like most I started my collection by purchasing the album "Fire and Love" and of course the follow up "Miracle Mile" both of which feature some great music. I went back and bought the now hard to find cd "First Watch" and also the newer cds "Buzz", "Bottle Rocket" and the live album. Somewhere in there they released a cd that has been in my player probably more than any I have owned. It is that good. This is my favorite cd put out by this band and is essential to any music collection.
This album opens up with "The Way Home Back" a very catchy tune that leads into the hit single "Endless Summer". The flow of this cd is perfect. It features their best songwriting and covers everything from the death of a loved one("See You In Heaven") to break ups/divorce ("Don't Say That It's Over"). They had lots of fun on this album. It really shows on "Rich Man Over The Line" and "Preacher and The Bear"
This is Guardians ultimate cd. This is their Beatles White album or Metallicas Black album. Yeah, it's that good. Their best writting, best playing, and the production is fantastic also.
It's great in the background while drinking coffee or in the car cranked up. Bottom line is you will love this cd. Was going to be called "Wire and Wood" but the band went with "Swing Swang Swung"
Standout songs: "Endless Summer" "See You In Heaven" "Rich Man Over The Line" and "Don't Say That It's Over" Every song is a standout, these are just my current favorites.
If I could put more stars, I would!.......1999-08-28
This CD lifts my spirits every time I listen to it - every time. "See You in Heaven" means the most to me because my father died February 22, 1997. Every time my family and I visit his grave, I play that song as we are leaving. My father heard that song before his death and loved it, so now I know he apprieciates it when I play it. I also enjoy the track "Preacher and the Bear" because I do this lil dance to it where I am sitting down and just swing my arms from side to side! I make my mom and brother laugh at that all the time!
Great intro to Guardian for non-rock listeners.......1999-03-02
"Let the Whole World" needs to be sung by every church in the world. It's an awesome melody with a powerful message, and it brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it . Speaking of powerful, these guys just don't know when to stop. They minister at any volume. From "The Way Home Back" (a barrelhouse-blues number with all the slide trimmings) to "Endless Summer" (a #1 Christian Rock chart-topper) to "Preacher and the Bear" (a great New Orleans jazz treatment),I wouldn't be afraid to enter any cut on this CD into a "smash-or-trash" contest with any new rock song by any group.
Great acoustical effort with a strong message........1998-10-20
Guardian continues to change their image with more acoustic instrumental work and softer (but not weak) vocals. This album changes the way you look at this top-flight Christian rock band. A "must" for any fan.

Jackie McLean quartet dates are special. Ever heard "Let Freedom Ring" or "Right Now!"? How about that date with Sonny Clark, "Tippin' the Scales"? Well, this date is pretty special too. 7 standards done with Sugar Hill style. Strictly for the true Blue Note heads.

Album Description
It's a rockin' eclectic set of instrumentals (Well, okay, there is one vocal,) that's at home in a smoky lounge with over-dressed patrons and over-dressed martinis. It just as much at home with half the room rocking while watching the other half swing. The Boston Globe (1/21/99) said, "No Label for these Suits! Four Piece Suit does a swinging instrumental hybrid of surf. lounge, rock and jazz. The sound is suave and playful with non-stop banter between Dave Sholl's sax and the three remaining pieces: Milt Reder's guitar, Dean Cassell's bass, and Lorne Entriss's drums.
Four Piece Suit in the flesh--er, suits--whips up a nice camp-infected rumpus, and on disc it doesn't disappoint. It's new CD, "Matinee Idyls," is mostly composed of originals, mingled with covers such as a surfy take on Patti Page's 'Old Cape Cod' and 'It came from Ipanema,' a woozy relation to the Ipanema song."
Customer Reviews:
Top quality swing..........1999-05-03
This band has a whole lot of fun with their music and it shows, both in their recorded music as well as in their live performances. The music ranks as well as the Voodoo Daddies and the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Some of their pieces harken back to the "Beach Blanket Bingo" style of lounge act and others are reminicient of the 1940s crime dramas. All around fun. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Really a relaxed date.......2001-12-28
Here we have one of those really relaxed recording sessions with four great guys who just love to play together. Things start off with "What's New", taken here at a surprising medium tempo rather than the usual ballad time. One time, when I heard Jackie McLean in person, he actually played that tune in a similar way, so this CD brings back to me some very beautiful memories. Jackie McLean always keeps his very personal and unique style, whether he is playing more familiar material like on this album,or is taking some "steps beyond". Especially after listening to the more advanced material from his famous albums of the sixties, it's really relaxing to have him play standards like "I Remember You" or "I'd Take Romance", and I particularly like his version on Golson's "Stablemates", which is a very good example of pure McLean on that tune with it's beautiful chord progressions. About the pianist on that date, Walter Bishop, just let me say that he is beautiful. Like on another great McLean-Album, "Capuchin Swing", he gets enough space to really stretch out. He was a Bud Powell disciple without merely copying Bud, very tasteful indeed.
A classic.......2001-12-12
This album tends to be overlooked, but it features refreshingly inventive and robust solos. There is no key wiggling or scale running here. And it really swings.
Jackie Mc Lean Swings with some funky flavor.......2001-07-20
Very impressive, Jackie demostrates his ability to keep the hard bop tradition while implementing some funk. His tone is unmistakable. A ture student of the BeBop, and Cool Jazz school, Jackie proves that his place on The Jazz Board of directors is valid.
True To Its Name.......2000-09-12
This Jackie McLean album is a truly swinging affair. There's not a ballad in the bunch. As Alfred Lion says in the liner notes, "They came, swung and they split, so we called the album 'Swing, Swang, Swingin'." Touche Al, say no more! Well, how about two more points of information. First, Jackie's quartet for this recording is Walter Bishop on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Second, this is a limited edition so don't wait too long to buy it, or "Swing, Swang" will go swinging off.
