About the Artist
She calls herself the "Soul Soulstress," a sexy and smooth-voiced coquette who will seduce your ears as quickly as she will win over your heart. Beneath her innocent face and the charming sparkle that lights her eyes is an R&B siren whose voice is simply beyond compare.

Some call her a breath of fresh air in the world of contemporary R&B akin to Vivian Green or Erykah Badu. Others label hers a throwback sound invoking the greats of blues and jazz such as Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald. Still more term the petite singer a ballad powerhouse in the vein of Vanessa Williams or SWV. The fact is: She is all of them.

Nina Velez came of age entertaining ideas of a career in fashion that naturally grew out of her innate knack for style. It's a trait still evident in her smart sense of couture and the single neon pink stripe running down the length of her hair which has become a trademark of sorts for the New Jersey native.

But Nina Velez's destiny was as a singer, a fact she knew for years but was slow to share. As a child, Velez would spend hours in her bedroom with her ear to the radio, emulating the style of contemporary legends of R&B and soul such as Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, and Alicia Keys in an effort to teach herself the art of song. It wasn't until a member of her family accidentally happened upon the youthful Velez in the midst of one of her private sessions and convinced her that she had something special that Velez realized the potential her talent had to reach people far beyond the confines of her bedroom walls.

Hooking up with the able production house of Alpha Entertainment and Omega Records, Nina Velez dove into recording, developing a collection of original songs that showcase the breadth of her unique voice. Her sexy debut single, "Shy," has been captivating audiences and industry executives alike in showcases across the nation.

Now with a Junior Vasquez remix of "Shy," airplay on his KTU radio show in New York City allowing her voice to reach the ears of millions of listeners, and a catalog of music she's anxious to share with the rest of the world, Nina Velez has officially arrived, and she's not just here, she's here to stay.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon a Mattress opened in May 1959 and was a solid success, if not a huge blockbuster. It did well enough, in any case, to warrant a 1997 revival starring Sarah Jessica Parker. The show was far from revolutionary, but it provided a really fun vehicle for a cast of top stage personalities, including black actress Jane White, who played Queen Aggravain (a part originally written for comedienne Nancy Walker) in whiteface. But of course, Once Upon a Mattress's heart and soul was Carol Burnett, who, in her Broadway debut created the part of Princess Winnifred and delivered two of Mary Rodgers's best songs, the hilarious "Shy" and the spunky "Happily Ever After," which sounds a bit like Jule Styne at his most rhythmic. Burnett's timing and performance remain as sharp as they were 40 years ago. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I've really enjoyed this CD. I only wish the play was available on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars an oldie but a goodie.......2006-03-15

Loved Carol Burnett then and love her now. This original cast CD is a lovely trip down memory lane.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like the original -- .......2006-01-30

No offense to any of the subsequent "Freds" but Carol Burnett OWNS this role. The recording is as fresh and funny as anything being done today and this is the version musical theatre fans should have in their library. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-01-22

My school did this musical last year (Spring 2005) and I had never heard of it before, so I bought both the Revial and the Original Cast Recordings. Fell in love. I was Sir Harry and loved both songs that I sang in. In my opinion, those are the two best songs in the entire musical, but then again, I'm biased.

Once Upon A Mattress OCR is by far the best out there. Don't get me wrong, the Revival Cast did a wonderful job (soundtrack at least) But There is something about Carol Burnett. She was meant to sing be Fred. But one thing that I didn't like is that "The Minstrel, the Jester & I" wasn't in this recording. But that is really the only problem I had with this.

My fav songs include:
In a Little While (because I sang it)
Yesterday I Loved You (again, I sang it)
Many Moons Ago
Shy

Would I recomend this CD? YES I WOULD!! I would shout it from the rooftops that people should by this CD! It's a funny, quaint little musical that people need to know about. I LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars I saw the original on Broadway.......2005-12-19

Once Upon a Mattress was one of the first Broadway shows that I ever saw and I was totally mesmorized and laughed so hard that my side hurt. Carol Burnett was the perfect person to play Fred and it was one of those magical performances that stays with you for a lifetime. The original cast album captures the fun and spirit of the show.

Later during the run of the show a friend of mine joined the chorus and when we talked about the experience, he told me that the joy that was on stage was similar to that felt by the cast and that was apparent on the album. They especially liked working with Ms. Burnett as she was a giving and caring actress.

I recommend this album to anyone who wants to spend some time just feeling good.

GREAT WHITE WAS ONE OF THOSE BANDS THAT BLEW ME AWAY. THIS RECORD IS BY FAR THERE BEST TO DATE AND THE MOST SUCESSFUL TOO. GREAT SONGS LIKE "HOUSE OF BROKEN LOVE" AND THE TOP 10 HIT "ONCE BITTEN TWICE SHY" MAKE THIS RECORD STAND OUT. BUT THE BEAUTIFUL BALLAD "THE ANGEL SONG" IS MY PERSONAL FAVORITE.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE TO ANY ROCK FAN!CHECK IT OUT.YOU WON'T BE DISSAPPOINTED.

3 out of 5 stars Great White highlight.......2006-08-21

Great White... 'one heavy lidded bunch of dudes' to quote one reviewer turned up, diddled about for a while and then dissipated to nothingness until tragedy made them more famous than their music ever would. And that's a sad state of affairs indeed. ... Twice Shy is from the band higher profile years when they were unfairly lumped in with the hair metal dudes, a similar fate to Tesla, and were having mild hits such as Mista Bone.

Certainly this ablum is a hybrid between 70's stoner rock and third generation Stonesy hard rock. The tone is set by the opener Move It with it's intro of truck brackes or somesuch putting you instantly on notice that this is going to be a highway cruiser of an album. And in terms of that, tunes such as Move It, Heart the Hunter, Hiway Nights and Mista bone are top notch, totally at home on the radio or jukebox of roadhouses across middle america. Dude, If I ever find myself touring the US by road I'm gonna take this album with me. It would be mandatory.

On the wider appeal front this album runs into problems. A clutch of the songs here are pretty middling stuff like The Angel Song, House of Broken Love and She Only are all pretty dire. Baby On Fire is fairly numbskull but is saved by it's carefree attitude and brisk pace. The covers are suitably chosen and attacked with fun in mind but when three of your eleven tracks are covers it's starting to get indicative of a shallow creative well. Or laziness. And when one of them is a sort of afterthought novelty track it doesn't help, even if it is genuinely amusing.

In a strange way this album has a number of cool cuts but always leaves the listener feeling as if the total is less than the sum of it's parts. It just doesn't hang together. Still, a serious driving album.

5 out of 5 stars Great White's Best Album.......2005-11-15

I've been listening to this record for about two weeks straight, after having rediscovered it. I dug out all my Great White stuff after getting the DVD of their music videos "My, My, My" which brought back so many fond memories. I was first introduced to the band with their astounding single/video "Rock Me", which was a rock/blues opus, utterly unlike anything else on the radio at the time (though today you hear vague resonances of Supertramp in it, due to the harmonica); "Rock Me" was Great White's epic, their "Stairway". I liked most of the singles from the 'first' record (_Once Bitten_), but I thought that it was very inconsistent...some songs were great ("All Over Now", "Save Your Love") and some were very derivative ("Gonna Getcha" sounds too much like AC/DC, and yes, "Never Change Heart" really does sound like Dokken). Yes, I do know now that the band had two records before _Once Bitten_, but I didn't know then. Those each have a few good songs on them ("Face the Day" is a classic).

It was with this record, though, that the band came into their own. It has their biggest selling single, the massively huge cover of Ian Hunter's "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", which is okay. That's not why I like the record. Here's a track by track breakdown of why I do:
1. Move It: Okay, so maybe the lyrics are a little dated and hokey, but this rocks and the sentiment is there..."let's get this mutha on!" Great Mark Kendall guitar solo(9/10)
2. Heart The Hunter: Dokken did something very much like this, and they did it better--"The Hunter" is one of Dokken's best songs...but this is not one of Great White's. It's not a cover, just thematically linked (6/10)
3. Hiway Nights: Funny how they mispelled the first word but not the second; I'da thought "Nites" was in order. Weird mystical meditation on driving ("To this eagle I belong"!?!?) but probably my favorite song on the record. Kendall's song is lame (and that's rare), but the relentless double-bass drum pounding never lets up (10/10)
4. The Angel Song: Thematically similar to Poison's "Fallen Angel", but much more melodic; a sad piano ballad. Also echoes The Kink's "Celluloid Heroes" slightly. Great video, cityscapes at night, though it's hard to tell that Michael Lardie is playing piano at first. Good Kendall solo (10/10)
5. Mista Bone: I didn't like this song when it first came out because it was too over the top. Now I love it. The lyrics are so unbelievably immature that you have to check them out; "innuendo" is no longer an appropriate term. Yet it really is an awesome groove, Tony Montana's bass is utterly crisp; during the verses it's like Kendall and the rhythm section are playing two different songs, but it's brilliant. (11/10)
6. Baby's On Fire: A decent, if cliched rocker, lyrics are a little boring. Reminiscent of Sammy Hagar (9/10)
7. House Of Broken Love: Yeah, man. Awesomely great total downer of a rock song, one of their best. Musically, it's actually somewhat similar to the Police's "King of Pain", but instead of the lyrics following the chords closely, Russell's voice weaves over them in his bluesy style. One problem: the intro solo is WAY too long on the album version (1:30 or so); I actually prefer the video version where it's truncated. But nevertheless (10/10)
8. She Only: Pretty, somber acoustic ballad, very dated sounding with constant arpeggios, but great sentiment and the lyrics are decent (9/10)
9. Once Bitten, Twice Shy: Can't argue with the sales figures, though this is one of my least favorite songs on the record. It's a good, solid rockin' tune (9/10)

You can tell that the success of this song transformed their style somewhat...just listen to the opening track of their next record (_Hooked_) and it's basically part II of this song. That feel carries throughout Hooked and it's kind of disappointing. Compare _...Twice Shy_'s "The Angel Song" to _Hooked_'s "Lovin' Kind"...both are piano ballads, but whereas the former is really in that dark '80s genre, the latter is an attempt to do a more mainstream rock sound...and apologies if you like it, I think "Lovin' Kind" is pretty bad: mundane, boring, bland, blah. "The Angel Song" fills up empty spaces at midnight, "Lovin' Kind" makes more sense around lunchtime. Sorry, I'm a midnight kind of guy, even in my 30s. There are a few good tracks on _Hooked_ ("Desert Moon", "Heartbreaker") but mostly it took a turn for the worst.

Great White are, as every other review says, 'unfairly' lumped in with Poison, Dokken, and so. But you have to remember that back in the day, that's how they were marketed. I think their stuff stands far beyond their peers...and I say this as someone once addicted to Dokken/Lynch Mob, I recognize George Lynch's talent for shredding and respect it greatly. But Dokken never achieved the timelessness of Great White because they were not as solid of a band; Don's voice was strident and his melodic approach stale; Jeff never hit any grinding grooves like "Mista Bone", and the band always seemed like they were about four individuals and not a unit.

Great White was a band, a band with a great singer (who yes, bears more than a passing resemblance to Robert Plant). Mark Kendall was capable enough a shredder, but on reflection, a much more interesting rhythm player than I had given him credit for. Overall the band is more musically sophisticated and bluesy than any of their contemporaries, but I hate to tell you this, and you're going to be mad: they were a Hair Band, and then with "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" they made a bid for more mainstream legitimacy, which is why I don't like most of _Hooked_. I've seen them live ('96 or so), and I've seen Dokken, and Poison. All of them have themes and approaches in common, but many stylistic differences (Poison is pure major-chord fluff, Dokken stays in minor keys with modal solos; GW is bluesy).

There were fast cars, objectification of women, cityscapes, and a lot of talk about "rockin'". There were videos with pretty girls, crazy guitar solos, excessive stage lights. That's Hair Metal or Glam as we used to call it. I was there, I know. I love all that, and I think they went wrong when they turned away from it, though they recoved a little bit on _Psycho City_. _Can't Get There From Here_ is a great rock record from them, but totally different, more like what they were going for with _Hooked_. I love Great White, their music has gotten me through some trying times. You need to see the videos to really understand this band in context.

I would also like to take the time to recommend Icon's "Right Between the Eyes" (1989, Atlantic/Megaforce) if you like this record...good luck finding a copy, though....

5 out of 5 stars The music stands out.......2005-09-14

1989 was a year of glam and all things that stand out. The only thing that stands out here is how good the songs are and the overall sound. There's blues, hard rockers and even a few songs that you'd find your parents listening to. I always felt that this band was worlds better than thier contemperies. Hiway Nights, Mista Bone and (seems classic to me) House of Broken Love are the best songs on the record, but there is not a bad track on this 9 track set. There is very few bands that had their hayday in the 80's that I find pulling out of my CD collection on a regular basis as much as Great White and this just might be their best

4 out of 5 stars This Album Rocks,.......2004-02-05

Blessings to the fans and performers that perished in the fire. God bless them and their families.

I never compared Great White to total glam bands like Poison or Warrant. These guys wore jeans and leather jackets too. GWs sound was more mature if you ask me, more piano and extended guitar riffs with arrangements that were more consistent with 70's style than the all out glam sound.

This CD is worth buying. I would compare Great White more with Tesla than Poison or Warrant. No, its not as good as the first album "once bitten". Crank "House of Broken Love" one time and you'll be captured "if you don't wanna lose your lovin' use it constantly, if theres gonna be lies, suspicious eyes, then baby, baby set me free!" This CD stands on its own no problem.

Buy it for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Return to Sanity.......2005-07-27

Before Monty Python, before the Beatles, before "'Enery the Aigth Oi Am" there was the subtle, sweet, insdious humor of Flanders and Swann, and their lyrics remain part of the recognition rituals of Ivy Leaguers of the sixties. For any aging hippies or yuppies who find life WAY more stressful than we ever expected, and for whom the down side of alcohol, sex, and drugs has become apparent, I recommend listening several times to "In the Bath". It raises a cry for peace among the nations by inviting all the leaders to sit congenially steaming in a communal bathtub. And they reminding us of our essential self-interest when they add the proviso "as long as Swann and Flanders get the end without the taps." On those nights when we suspect that there isn't any point to it all, reach for the Flanders and Swann. They won't convince you there is any meaning to life, but they'll make it a lot easier to bear. Don't even try to do without it.

5 out of 5 stars Have Some Madeira.......2005-07-06

Not every line in Flanders and Swann has become part of our 37-year marriage, but many have. As our turntables fail, we are pleased that we can relive all the fun stuff we used to collect. Nothing is like this duo, especially what you usually hear as French horn by Mozart converted into "I found that horn go(r)ne." And, of course,
"Have some Madeira, m'dear" is an all-time favorite.

5 out of 5 stars British humour at its best.......2003-03-15

When I started out as a teacher of English, I had the most wonderful colleague as a mentor -- when she retired she gave me three LPs with much of what is on these CDs, and it must be one of the best gifts I have ever been given. Practically all of it makes me smile or laugh out loud (although I must admit that some, like The Armadillo and Slow Train, make me so melancholy that I can just feel my lower lip tremble and my eyes fill up). How can you beat lines like "Hail to thee, blithe Wompom", or "The English are moral, the English are good / And clever, and modest, and misunderstood"? I find they make great listening exercises for my teenaged students as well -- they consider it ancient, but incredibly funny!

5 out of 5 stars If you haven't heard this..........2003-01-16

The great comedic pairing of the late Michael Flanders (vocals) and Donald Swann (piano and occasional vocals) must surely rank among the hall of fame of comic singers and songwriters. Descended from the British music hall tradition, these two men wrote and performed music which still sparkles with wit today, some 40 or more years since it was recorded.

After being told to take up singing as a means of strengthening his polio-weakened lungs, the wheelchair-bound Flanders teamed up with pianist Swann and proceeded to write such classic songs as "The Hippo Song (Mud Mud Glorious Mud)", "The Gasman Cometh", "The Gnu Song", "A Transport of Delight" and many others. As well as a gently satirical spirit, all these songs feature the sublime wordplay and interplay of both men.

The first two discs of this box set are actual concerts - "At The Drop Of A Hat" and its successor "At The Drop Of Another Hat". Recorded at the height of the duo's popularity and form, the sound quality is surprisingly good for recordings this old.

"At The Drop Of A Hat" opens with three of the Flanders and Swann classics. "Transport Of Delight", a song in praise of the "97 horsepower omnibus" features the wonderful harmonies of the duo on lines like "any more fares" and Flanders' dead-on impression of a London busdriver "Geddardait, we're full right up inside". "Song of Reproduction" deals with the new, as it was then, stereo technology and features Flanders delivering an incredible monologue using every conceivable piece of audiophile jargon. "The Gnu Song" (in which "gnu" is pronounced phonetically) is a real treat. The audience's reaction to the reappearance of the gnu is superb.
As well as this opening trio, the disc features Flanders' snippets of "Songs For Our Time" (in which he experiments with conventions of hit songs), "Song of the Weather" (a rundown of English weather throughout the year), "The Reluctant Cannibal" (featuring Swann in the tititular role and the chorus "I can't eat people/I won't eat people/eatin' people is wrong"), Swann's foray into Greek folksong "Kokraki" and the justifiably famous "Madeira M'Dear". The performance ends with a rousing version of "The Hippo Song".
Flanders is in fine voice throughout and his comments introducing each song are delivered with deadpan accuracy. The story behind "The Gnu Song" is an absolute masterpiece. Flanders' monologue about the creation of "Greensleeves" is also superb - "'Greenfleeves'. That's an interesting name for a fong" (referencing old English script) being just a taste.

"Another Hat" begins in equally fine form with "Gasman Cometh" and "Ill Wind". "Gasman", presaged as "a tale of unending domestic upheaval", is sure to have most people who've ever dealt with unreliable tradesmen nodding in agreement, while "Ill Wind" is Flanders' attempt at setting words to a French horn concerto featuring the immortal lines "I lost that horn/lost that horn/lost that horn/found that horn/gorn". The performance continues with Swann's Russian/English song "In The Desert", the ending of which is truly side-splitting. "All Gall" (a reinterpretation of "This Old Man" to fit then-French President Charles de Gaulle) is a little dated but very cleverly done. "Song of Patriotic Prejudice", with its introduction and opening lines grabbing the audience's attention is another triumph, while the "Hippo Encore" is a great end to the performance.
Again Flanders is at his peak. His loving description of the Spanish olive-stuffers ("Olividados") and his superb story about flying ("By Air") are both brilliant examples of the shaggy dog story.
My favourite from both of these discs would have to be "First and Second Law". Flanders decides to educate Swann in elementary science and picks on the first and second laws of thermodynamics ("heat is work and work is heat" and "heat cannot of itself pass from one body to a hotter body") and the repetition of these phrases in time to Swann's barely-there piano accompaniment is one of the finest moments in British comedy.

The third disc is largely forgettable. It begins with a series of animal-related songs performed in a studio and without much of Flanders' rambling introductions. "Warthog" has its moments, while the others were clearly not performed in front of an audience for a reason. "Wompom" is also mildly diverting, presenting a story about a made-up substance which is the answer to everything.
The rest of the disc is then filled out with much earlier material in a rather poorly-recorded concert. "20 Tons of TNT" (related to the calculation the pair had done which gave that as the amount of TNT per person on the planet at the time) provides food for thought, but little more.

Is this box set for everyone? No. Much of the humour both within and without the songs does require a bit of background knowledge to what was going on in Britain and Europe at the time (1960s), John Profumo is referenced a few times as well as Charles de Gaulle and the Common Market, while a smattering of classical music knowledge can help out a bit with Swann's work and "Ill Wind". The fact that my grandfather (who's in his late 70s) recalls hearing these songs and laughing may give an indication as to the age of some of the subject matter. Equally the fact that "First and Second Law" references an awful lot of physics might do the same.

Nevertheless, for anyone who loves British humour done in a gentle manner or who is interested in the source of "mud mud glorious mud/nothing quite like it for cooling the blood", give these CDs some serious consideration.

    5 out of 5 stars Gentle Satire.......2002-04-03

I've been singing Flanders and Swann every day In the Bath since I first heard them in 1964. If you don't know them, think Gilbert and Sullivan by way of English music hall and Noel Coward, with a bit of Tom Lehrer musical satire and classic Bob Newhart or Charlie Manna monologues. F&S commented gently on their times: "The purpose of satire, it has been rightly said, is to strip away the veneer of comfortable illusion and cozy half-truth. And our job, as I see it, is to put it back again." Quite simply the best comic songs and patter of the 20th century. Michael died in 1975, Donald in 1994. Goodnight, Mabel Figworthy, wherever you are.

Here are some samples of Michael's verbal wit.

    Wordplay:
    - "A Transport of Delight," their song of the pleasures of the double-decker bus "has recently been adopted as the theme song of the Underground resistance movement."
    - Speculating that Henry VIII wrote Greensleeves: "and the royalties go to royalty."
    - About a tennis referee late in the day: "the umpire upon whom the sun never sets."
    - Explaining how he was hoisted in his wheelchair onto airliners by a fork lift: "Why they need a great machine like that to lift forks I do not know. Well, they're only plastic, now, aren't they?"
    - On status symbols: "The object is to Gunga Din your neighbor: 'I'm a better man than you' is the acid test," and, "let's bang our status cymbals with the best."
    - To a disenchanted cannibal: "You used to be a regular anthropophagi."
    - Of a lecher: "And he said as he hastened to put out the cat, the wine, his cigar, and the lamps," while the girl "lowered her standards by raising her glass, her courage, her eyes, and his hopes."
    - At the corrida d'olivas (the Andorran festival of olive stuffing, not to be confused with the Spanish corrida de toros, or bullfight): "And a great cry goes up of Ole! He has made an 'ol."
    - "It's no good going up to a scientist and saying to him like you would to anybody else, 'Good morning, how are you, lend me a quid, and so on.' He'll just glare at you, or make a rude retort."

    Throw-aways
    - During the height of the cold war the Soviet Union sent the Moscow Ballet on a world tour. Donald sang one chorus of the Hippopotamus Song "mud, mud, glorious mud - nothing quite like it for cooling the blood" in Russian. Michael: "That should improve our cultural relations."
    - During the 1963 Mandy Rice-Davies and Christine Keeler scandal: "None of that going around saying no smoke without fire. Nil cumbustibus, Profumo." Also, from "Friendly Duet," "such models of friendship are precious and rare, while the friendship of models is not."
    - "Now if you're writing a musical, as I'm sure practically all of you are, . . ."
    - Of Donald: "You know that no one has a higher regard for your music . . . than you do yourself. I merely meant that you are not great because you are not dead. If you wish to be great you must stop composing and start decomposing."
    - "We never found a rhyme for (Soviet Premier Nikita) "Kruschev" until he was dead: Did he die or was he "pushed off"?"
    - "We spent two dreadful, uh, delightful years, entertaining the Americans whose need, let's face it, is greater even than yours. Of course, when we're over there we say that the other way 'round."
    - "No matter what you may say about the Germans, and who doesn't . . ."
    - "Some of the songs that have made our names a household word, like slop-bucket . . ."
    - "They've started testing cars now. They started at 10 years, then 5, now three. There's even some talk of having them tested before they leave the factory."

    Absurdities
    - "I'm delirious about our new oven fitted with the eye-level grill. This means that without my having to bend down the hot fat can squirt straight into my eye."
    - A spectator during the construction of Stonehenge: "So, it's not going to be lived in. Well, that's something anyway. So what is it, then? It's a what?! A calendar?! A bit big for a calendar isn't it? You'd look pretty foolish with that on your desk."
    - "Donald knocked himself out this morning. Got one of those new pop-up toasters. Nasty things."

    Incredible multiple rhymes:
    - "The fair hippoptama he aimed to entice from her seat on her hilltop above, as she hadn't got a ma to give her advice, went tip-toeing down to her love."
    - Of Josephine: "Nonsense, said Bonaparte. She lives on her own, apart, in her own apartment."
    - "Oh let us be married if our parents don't mind. We'd be happy and inseparable. Inextricably entwined. We'd live happily every after, said the Honeysuckle to the Bindweed."
    - "And you'll always see a single lace-less left-hand leather boot. A bootless British river bank's a shock. We leave them there at midnight, you can track a member's route by the alternating print of boot and sock."

    5 out of 5 stars If It Wasn't For Stevie . . . .......2007-01-29

Being a big Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac fan back in the late 70's, I don't think I would have bought the albums back then. Stevie's haunting voice on "Tunnel O' Love", the B-side to "Magnet and Steel" is what hooked me on Walter Egan. The nice thing here is that you get the first two albums on one CD. The bonus is the great sound from being remastered. Any Stevie Nicks fan will enjoy the number of songs she appears on (and there are many of them).

5 out of 5 stars Magnet and Steel was great, but there's more to Walter Egan than that...........2006-08-14

My introduction with Walter Egan was the only song he seems to be known for. True, "Magnet and Steel" was a hit, and was played frequently on the radio from its 1978 peak of #8 on the charts, up through the mid 1980s, but there is more.

I first got a listen of the entire Not Shy LP in its 8-track format, then on vinyl, and finally in 1997, I snagged the now out-of-print Razor & Tie reissue. Why? Simply put....this is music that is great for those road trips, crusing down the highway, and even when not travelling the roads, is a fun listen.

It's too bad, Fleetwood Mac got all the fame and glory for their Rumours album (Which I will admit, is a flawless pop album), and Bob Welch had his share with his late-1977 single 'Sentimental Lady' (which seems to have been forgotten and is only heard in playback over the PA systems of supermarkets and small dying malls)..all overshadowing what members of the Mac (namely Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, and Lindsey Buckingham) alumni put out when beside Egan. Just have a listen to 'could-have-been-hit' songs like "Blonde In Blue T-Bird" (Stevie wails on this track) or "Make it Alone". To my ears, they have that undeniable hint of that 'Mac' sound that was unescapable at the time. A shame that Not Shy wasn't pushed ahead in promotion by the record label. The entire album is near perfect for me. I can't find a single filler track.

Once I get to hear the Fundimental Roll half of this disc, I'll add to the review.

I picked up this two'fer CD along with the other Egan two'fer HiFi/The Last Stroll (It will be my first time ever hearing those two albums), and on this CD there's Egan's long OOP debut, Fundimental Roll, in its entirety for the first time ever on CD. With the other three unheard of (to my ears) albums, I'm not expecting the same sound I heard with "Magnet", but so long as the music here is fun and puts a smile on my face, that's all that I care about. 'Fun' and 'upbeat' seem to be two things missing from a lot of so-called mainstream 'rock' music these days, which really is too bad. In today's world, that kind of stuff is sorely needed.

Highly recommended for fans of the Mac's later years and those who want something upbeat to listen to.

    4 out of 5 stars I'm NOT SHY Now...........2006-07-16

...but I'm still rather attached to my body. I graduated from high school in 1977, and at the Theatre Department's year-end banquet, I received two awards: 'SHYEST' and 'BEST BODY.' That said a lot for my acting ability, didn't it? And you wouldn't expect the guy with the best bod to also be the shyest, would you? Well, take a look through some of my Amazon reviews and you'll see that I'm no longer shy (some might even call me an opinionated, loudmouthed jerk). And yes, I did have the best formed male body, but that's because I was also on the wrestling team - pumping iron all the time - and my competition in the Theatre Department was a bunch of prancing sissies singing Westside Story tunes. Not much competition there, ya know?

One summer after graduation, my friend, Eric, and I were hitting all of the Rock 'N' Roll clubs and seldom missed the free noontime Friday concerts at Santa Monica City College. One Friday we caught this dude named Walter Egan playing great summer beach town tunes on that diminutive stage, and I liked his catchy pop so much that I went right out and bought his just released album, 'NOT SHY.' Within weeks, I heard his song 'Magnet And Steel' on the radio and listened as that July and August it steadily climbed the charts all the way up to #8, making Egan yet another One-Hit Wonder. I felt like I was an "insider."

What's surprising is that the album 'NOT SHY' contains at least half a dozen other cuts that could have just as easily cracked Billboard's Top Ten chart, being (to my ears) much better than the "one hit", but they got no radio airplay. Who can explain that stuff? But if you want an authentic slice of that late '70s pop pie, you could do much worse than Egan's second release, 'NOT SHY.' It was recorded in L.A. in '77 and contains 36 minutes of music that includes Fleetwood Mac pop icon Stevie Nicks singing backup on 5 tracks and bandmates Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood on 2 each, along with Dean Torrance (of Jan & Dean fame) on 1 other.

'NOT SHY' is out-of-print as a single release, but is currently available here in a "Two-Fer-One" package along with Egan's debut album, 'Fundamental Roll.' But I also bought 'Fundamental Roll' way back when and never much cared for it. A little (OK a LOT) older now, and wiser, and more mature, I couldn't bring myself to play that one at this point, as it contains a song called 'Tunnel O' Love' which is about a certain part of a woman's anatomy; a little too lewd and crude for me at (nearly) 47 years of age. I think women should be considered in their totality, not examined part by part. So let's look at 'NOT SHY' alone (*By the way, 30-second song samples can be heard on the Product Page for this out-of-print release.)

SWEET SOUTH BREEZE is a real toe-tapper that opens with Egan's twangy guitar. This had Top Ten hit potential.

MAGNET AND STEEL is the big hit. A ballad which includes a very Beach Boys-like guitar break. "Hey baby, ya wanna camp out on the beach tonight and build a bonfire and...uh....OK, well maybe next weekend?"

FINALLY FIND A GIRLFRIEND with Stevie Nicks featured rather prominently in the background had "hit" written all over it. After years of being the loneliest guy with a good body, I finally found a girlfriend. But the minute I began joyfully singing this song...she dumped me! And the search began again.

THE BLONDE IN THE BLUE T-BIRD is another one that shoulda been a hit. Who can hear this one without thinking of the movie, 'American Graffiti'?

STAR IN THE DUST contains the lyric, "I recall what somebody once told me: Only the lucky in love survive." Here Egan cleverly references his debut album which kicked off with the song, 'Only The Lucky (In Love Survive)' So now you know who the "somebody" was who told him.

I WANNIT is the weak link on the album. Not offensive but not a standout track either.

MAKE IT ALONE contains some angst-driven guitar playing from our boy which gives the song the edge it requires - really his best work on the album. And yes, you can make it alone! Just look at me; I've made it alone. But it IS kinda lonely to be a lone kinda guy. But you CAN make it...alone...and lonely....very lonely....desperately lonely. OK, that's all I have to say about that because it's starting to depress me.

UNLOVED. Ah, yes, here's another one about being alone, lonely, unloved. It's about a girl who can't be contacted because she's "unlisted" her phone. But hey, the singer's gonna make it alone even though he may be a bit lonely, a bit unloved...REALLY unloved. Oh man, here we go again. "Hey baby, let's get together and...oh, I see. OK, well maybe next weekend?"

JUST THE WANTING. No, this brooding ballad is not about wanting a girl when you're unloved and trying to make it alone. It's about the wanting to attain something in life...something a little BIGGER than a girlfriend...unless of course, your girlfriend is named Bertha, or something like that. There's a line in this song that says, "I remember when I was seventeen and my life had just begun." That's funny because I was seventeen when I first saw Walter playing on that little college stage, and I too felt that my life was full of pristine promise. Little did I know back then that the best I'd ever do in life was to write semiappreciated reviews for a then unimaginable internet shopping site while trying to....make it alone...so alone.

HOT SUMMER NIGHTS. Yeah, I know all about hot summer nights (today's high here in Phoenix was about 115 degrees and it's still about 100 at 2 AM), but somehow I get the feeling that Egan has a different kind of "hot" in mind. This may be my favorite track. Here's another one with tremendous hit potential that inexplicably never got played over our radios in the summer of '78.
    "A-Woo-ooo-ooo-OO-ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo, hot summer nights."

There's nothing fancy on 'NOT SHY'; just simple, but catchy commercial pop, summery and tasty. Alright listen, I gotta go now. No, you can't go with me, and don't let me catch you trying to follow me either. I'm gonna MAKE IT ALONE, gosh darn it, and I can't do that if you're following after me like a lost little puppy dog! "Alone" means alone and I can make it that way...I can....I just know I can. Of course, if you're blonde and female...you think maybe I could catch a lift with you in your blue T-bird? Perhaps we could MAKE IT ALONE together. OK, well maybe next weekend?

    4 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure.......2006-05-31

I guess there are worse disks to experience a guilty pleasure - but this is one of mine. The good thing is that don't have to purchase these separately - the dual disk is a nice touch.

Egan produces some of the best beach-y music since the Beach Boys/Jan & Dean era. It's a music genre that has all but disappeared.....and even Egan's disks are pushing the 30yo mark.

Completely overlooked save "Magnet & Steel" (and that only hit radio due to Fleetwood Mac riding high), there is some credible and good material that encompasses both 'Fundamental Roll' and 'Not Shy'.

That being said, had the best of material on both disks been combined, it could have made for one great disk. As it is, some of the weaker material truly waters down the potential these disks had.

Stand out cuts include: "Won't You Say You Will", "Yes, I Guess I Am", "Magnet & Steel", "Just the Wanting", "Finally Fine a Girlfriend", "Blonde in the Blue T-Bird" and "Hot Summer Nights".

These aren't deep albums or songs. Just fun....and there's nothing wrong w/that.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for "Rumours" fans..........2005-06-08

Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood are all over these two very decent, very enjoyable albums by Walter Egan, but who is Walter Egan? He's best remembered for the hit "Magnet & Steel" and for his woodcutting side-hobby(displayed in Buckingham's liner notes for "Out of the Cradle"). He's sort of a non-rabble-rousing good-time boy, a bit callow and unambitious. But his straightforward vocals are pleasant and undemanding, and he sounds even better duetting with La Nicks. Best songs feature Nicks prominently: "Won't You Say You Will", "Yes I Guess I Am"(which features a blistering Buckingham guitar solo), the positively infectious "When I Get My Wheels"(Stevie gets down on this one--"Watch out!!"), the rollicking "Finally Find a Girlfriend", and the best song here, "The Blonde in the Blue T-Bird". On the 'Not Shy' album, Egan got a bit more involved and expanded his band outside of his friends, but the girl back-up singer is no match for Nicks(who appears on several songs nevertheless)and his personality is still too lackadaisical to fully come through.

Wonderful selection of classic singers and songs. Special favorites are Ethel Merman and Barbara Cook.

5 out of 5 stars Love the choices.......2006-08-11

This is great. Anything with Ethel, Bernadette, Barbara (both of them), Mary, and Marin is beyond words. Any one of them by themselves is awesome but these ladies together are mind blowing. All of the women sound amazing but they made a mistake on the list of songs and composers. "Raise the Roof" sung by Julia Murney (I love her)was written by Andrew Lippa, not LaChusia.

          2 out of 5 stars coulda been a contender.......2006-03-15

The divas are indeed divine, but the choice of music sung left me wondering why, with so many other great music selection contenders.

5 out of 5 stars Two words: Julia Murney.......2001-09-03

OK, so it sounds crazy to review an album with Ethel Merman and Bernadette Peters on it and not mention them. But...tough. I've read enough about them to know how good they are.

Buy this album as a token of love to the producer who had the cajones to put Julia Murney on an album celebrating the last 100 years of Broadway divas.

Because SHE is one of the greatest voices of the decade!

2 out of 5 stars Stick to the Bo Deans.......2001-11-02

I found this cd to be quite bland with only one song "Like I Do" standing out. As has been the case with the last few Bo Deans albums it doesn't have anything distinctive enough to recommend. It is a bit of a departure from the Bo Deans but not much. Sadly I think they have run their course creatively. Stick with Love & Hope or Outside Looking In and remember their glory days.

5 out of 5 stars It is worth about 7 stars.......2001-03-27

The first time I played this there were 4 or 5 songs that stood out immediatley as thoughtful ballads or rockers like "Like I do" , "Absolution" ,"Feel", and "Perfect Blue Sky". After the third time through they all sounded good. Quality throughout in terms of intimacy, lyrics, passion and musicianship. It is a great exchange of your time to give this one plenty of listens...

          5 out of 5 stars It's all good.......2000-11-12

This album starts good and never fades. In fact, I like it more each time I listen to it. There are so many great songs, great lines, and Kurt's performance has a lot of depth and feeling. A great addition to your collection if you are a BoDeans fan, but it goes in a different direction and adds another dimension to the BoDeans sound.

5 out of 5 stars Kurt Neumann "Shy Dog".......2000-10-20

Shy Dog is an amazing masterpiece of music. Kurt is brilliant. If you like the BoDeans you will love this. If you appreciate creative, moving thought provoking music, you will love this. I bought this CD when it was on Kurt's own label. Now, I plan to get the recently released version on Oarfin records. There isn't a bad song on Shy Dog. Kurt sings like an angel. The song "Hopes" is the best song I think I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Great debut effort.......2000-09-19

For the last 15 years, Kurt Neumann has written and performed some truly inspired music with the BoDeans. His solo debut, "Shy Dog," continues the trend. The sound (at times sparse yet intimate, at times rollicking rock) is reminiscent of the BoDeans' third release, "Home." "Perfect Blue Sky" and "Like I Do" are great numbers, and title track is a poignant dedication to his late "best friend." A strong debut from end-to-end; the only fault is a throwaway curse at the beginning of "And Then This." All in all, a treat both for long-time BoDeans fans as well as anyone who can appreciate well-written songs.
