Score composer Howard Shore has informed this first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with his distinctly modern sensibilities. Revolving loosely around a brief, heroic brass theme, this epic is infused with a powerful rhythmic thrust and a musical range that encompasses centuries (from the Renaissance pastoralism of "Concerning Hobbits" to the fiery, Prokofiev-influenced drama of "A Knife in the Dark"). Key to the score's sense of mystery and magical place are the rich choral passages that are interspersed throughout, some so ominously gothic they make The Phantom Menace's "Duel of the Fates" sound almost sunny by comparison. Enya's contributions ("The Council of Elrond" and the song "May It Be") add a sense of organic tranquility, but it's Shore's Wagnerian-scaled orchestral score that should long be cherished by admirers of film music and hobbits alike. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
The music is good but the movie is better.......2007-04-10
I really enjoyed the 3 series of The Lord of the Rings movie so I wanted the music. The soundtracks are good but if you like the movie the soundtracks watch the movie. They remind you of certain parts in the movie like the song Concerning Hobbits. The song is whimsical. Enyna has a great voice, very haunting. The Ring Goes South is another favorite of mine. I can enjoy these soundtracks as classical or dramatic music. I bought them because I loved the Lord of the Rings which has many similarities to Braveheart. Bravery, courage, strength, honesty, selflessness, love and other good human qualities people try to attain and admire them in the people and movies they view.
A grand sountrack..........2007-01-10
One of Howard Shore's best soundtracks around. The music is strong enough to tell its own separate story apart from FOTR. You will never tire of the heart-pounding excitement from The Bridge of Kazaad-Dum track.
Lord of the Rings Original Soundtracks, films 1 and 3.......2006-11-08
Having made an earlier mistake of buying 2 C.D.'s which were not original soundtrack, I can truthfully say these are the best. If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, look no further - no one does it better than The London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer Howard Shore. You will be back in Middle Earth reliving all those wonderful scenes. I bought only The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King from Amazon.com because I already had the Two Towers from Amazon.co.uk and I would recommend all three - magical.
Awe inspiring!.......2006-10-02
What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. I think this first one is my favorite of the three "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the lighter moments, like the sweet, simple hobbit theme, with the grander and more menacing sections of the music. (That despite the fact that said hobbit theme begins exactly like the first phrase of the Protestant hymn "This Is My Father's World," which prompts me to think of the hobbits trouping off to Sunday school every time I hear it. But now when I hear the hymn, I think of Lord of the Rings, so I suppose all's fair!) What impressed me most as I watched "The Fellowship of the Ring" was how scary the music was when the hobbits were being pursued. Those relentless drums and eerily screaming drums made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even though I knew the story like the back of my hand and knew for a fact that the poor little heroes would manage to escape. But the music truly made me wonder otherwise ... Now that's good composition! And the fact that the filmmakers chose to include background music in so many of the scenes, almost continuously ... well, that's just good filmmaking! The other impressive thing about Howard Shore's score is how the voicing and repeating motifs tie the whole thing together, like the finest of symphonies. The total effect is utterly convincing and utterly transporting. Peter Jackson chose well when he picked Shore as his score writer. Very, very well! Be sure to get the scores from the other two movies in the trilogy as well - "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King." They seem to be available in no end of different packagings, including ones with bonus DVDs about the creation of the score. Also, make sure to get the extended edition DVDs of the movie itself, with hours and hours of fascinating commentaries and behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of the films. Truly a bargain at any price! And for more seminal soundtracks, try John Williams' defining scores for the "Star Wars" series and Basil Poledouris's spectacular score for the original "Conan the Barbarian."
It is the best of the three CDs!!!.......2006-09-10
For me, the music of the first sequel is my favourite since this is also the sequel that I prefer in the trilogy (I remember being blown away by the quality of this movie, the actors, the setting, the action scenes, the special effects, the moving relationships between all the characters and of coourse the music)
I think that the other CDs are a bit repetitive once you've got this one, even if I still like the music of the second soundtrack 'The Two Towers'. As for the 3rd sequel, I seldom listen to it as there is only one track that I like, 'The Return of the King'.
Now, this first CD of the trilogy is actually very good. Thanks to Enya, it is haunting and the songs are beautiful. There are a few eery but melodious songs like 'The Council of Elrond', 'Lothlorien', 'May it Be'. I love the change of tempo, the balance between fast and slow movements in 'A Knife in the Dark', 'Flight to the ford', and 'Amon Hen' which is my favourite piece (the Death of Boromir) with the oboe sound mixed with the beat of the drums and finaly the haunting voice of the singer. Track 17 is also worth listening. I like this CD because you've got different tempos and melodies and Anya is a great singer to me. But I also enjoy listening to Emiliana Torrini's song 'Gollum's Song'in the second soundtrack...

Funny, Funny, Funny!!!.......2007-02-15
I recently purchased this CD to upgrade from the cassette that I own. I had not listened to this for a while but I was laughing right away when I played the disc. 22 years after its original release, I was still laughing at some of the funnier material that I still remembered word for word. If you like stand-up, give this one a listen. Steven definitely has a strange way about himself but the material is real sharp.
Classic comedy!!!.......2006-09-14
Steven Wright is a hilarious comedian with a bland, straight delivery that might not be for everybody. But if you are a Steven Wright fan, this is the only comedy cd that he has released. This CD is old, probably 20 years old, so some of the stuff may be a bit dates, but it is still hilarious. Wright has gone on to do some acting and has appeared on talk shows. There are also many jokes attributed to Wright on the internet. Many of those sound like they could be, but really aren't. For true steven wright comedy, check out this CD. While there may be some sexual innuendo in a few jokes, the humor is really clean and not any bad language that I can remember.

Beautiful - no other word for it.......2007-05-30
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. A must for both casual and die-hard Western fans. Great even if your sense of nostalgia doesn't reach that far back (like me; I'm 22). I love the combination of slow ballads and fast, jumpy songs.
More Momories of Westerns.......2007-03-09
Boy, do these bring back memories of some of the Great Westerns of the 50's. We sit and listen to the songs and think of the movies and the TV shows that they are from. We can remember who starred in the movies and how the "Sons of the Pioneers" entered the stage to sing.
This is a GREAT CD.
Old West Nostalgia.......2006-10-29
For anyone old enough to remember all the great Old West TV shows and movies from the same era, this CD is bound to bring you lots of fond memories and relaxing pleasure. What's best, the artists are all the originals; there are no remakes. Plenty of tunes are on this CD. It's well worth the price and the time.
Very Disappointing.......2006-10-24
The quality of the samples is better than the quality of the recordings.
I Look Toward Home.......2006-10-05
This album takes me back to Texas. "The Sons Of Katie Elder" sung by Johnny Cash and "Nevada Smith" sung by Merle Kilgore sound good but are a bit modern. "The Searchers" sung by the Sons Of The Pioneers really hits home. As the sun sets and the days grow short I ride away and I look toward home.

Brilliantly funny.......2007-01-09
I have searched hi and lo for a Steven Wright CD for my husband who is big fan. This CD is hilariously funny and worth every penny!
insightful comedian.......2006-12-26
Steven Wright is an insightful comedian, wonderful at examining the human condition. He is very clever, and his deadpan humor works effectively. He wonders about things in life that most people don't think about. It's one of the few comic CDs that I could listen to over and over again.
He used to be a narrator for bad mimes.......2006-12-10
One of my all-time favorite comedy albums. Loaded with highly quotable deadpan puns, classic one-liners, and even a song.
I remember seeing Steven W. several times on television in the mid 90s, thinking it kind of lame after seven years he was still using the joke about his dog named Stay. But then he pops up on TV with new material or a funny cameo in a film and I remember why I liked him.
Steven Wright I have a pony.......2006-05-24
This cd contains the material on his 1985 HBO special.
It is not an import only, you can find it on stevenwright.com as well as ebay. He has jokes like "I bought some used paint, it was in the form of a house". "Sometimes I like to look up in the sky and smile for a satelite picture". If you like Stevn Wright you should google comedians Mitch Hedberg (mitchhedberg.net) and Austin Peterson (apcomedy.com) Both do one liner comedy.
I laughed, I cried........2005-10-10
There's few comedians that really make me want their cd, Steven Wright is one of them. Despite the fact that this performance is 20 years old now (actually 1985), it still kills. The simple jokes are best: "I spilled spot remover on my dog, now he's gone", or "I worked at a fire-hydrant factory, and couldn't park anywhere near the place", or "I like to skate on the other side of the ice". There are a hundred of these on this album, roughly 44 minutes worth, and of course his delivery makes it twice as funny. I don't know why he has no other albums out, but at least we have "I Have A Pony". Oh, and as far as being an import still, I don't think it is. I ordered it from this very site for under ten bucks.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
The aggro-rock movement spearheaded by the 'Tones, Korn, Sevendust, System of a Down, and Rage Against the Machine, among others, has been taking on new influences with each new release by the major players. White Pony may be the biggest leap yet for the genre, as Chino Moreno, Chi Cheng, Abe Cunningham, Stephen Carpenter, and DJ Frank Delgado maintain the fierceness that's earned them a rabid following. This time out, however, their patented brand of hip-hop metal is adorned with ambient and alt-rock touches. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
hypnotic.......2007-07-06
It took me awhile to get used to "White Pony" when it first came out. I was still stuck on "Around the Fur" and the def had grown up. I've caught up to it though and have to say that this is one of the most hypnotic albums I've heard. The blend of mood and rage really does it for me. From here on out I became a diehard def fan and promised that I would buy every album by them.
Love it.......2007-06-26
My fave song is "Change". I like this album because it flows well. It isn't too hardcore nor too mellow. I also like the song at the end. I listen to it on repeat. Love Deftones.
Definately a heavy somber one.......2007-05-24
I bought this album as soon as it came out and played it over and over for awhile. The sounds are incredible because even though the guitars are so up front nothing seems to overpower or distort. It has a lot of great moments in it but I really was impressed with Chino's range, thats some powerful vocal cords.I think it could add to any hard rock fans collection.
"Roll the windows down, this cold night air is curious.".......2007-04-19
Of all the bands stuck with the reviled nu-metal label, Deftones was one of the first, and it didn't do them any favors. They aren't like some of the other bands known for it, who inserted mediocre rap vocals and highly computerized and studio-perfected sound. They do have a bit of rap on the opening bonus track, although it's not obstructive and is pretty cool because the chorus is recalled in a different way on the album's final song. The hard rock music is decent, but the reason I really like Deftones is the vocals. The guy can sing, and his high voice contrasts in a very nice way with the crunching guitars.
He can scream as well as sing, and this is used along with the music to great some very nice shifts between hard and soft in the same song. Just listen to "Back to School (Mini Maggit)", "Elite", "Teenager", and "Passenger" to get an idea of how many things they can do and still sound like the same hardcore band. The single "Change (In the House of Flies)" interested me when I first heard it years ago, although I never got around to really listening to them until now, and I'm not sure why. Every song is enjoyable, and they manage to avoid all sounding the same which happens to a lot of bands with a similar style. It's not astounding but it's good hard rock.
Atmospheric rock classic.......2007-03-02
This is one of the few albums I own that never, never, never gets old. I mean it! I bought this album right when it came out after liking 'Around the Fur' moderately. I was shocked at how far ahead of the last album this one was! I mean light years ahead! (no disrespect for those who worship 'Around the fur' and 'Adrenaline'.. they are both great albums but simply lack the distinct, brooding atmosphere that the 'Pony' reeks of) I have rarely come across and album as absorbing, and haunting as this.
From start to finish, the Deftones bounce back from dark, depressing, atmospheric pieces to violent, heavy tracks that just blend together to create something truly frightening. Chino, of course, stands head and shoulders above the mix, with his droning, dying, beautiful voice. You dont come across something this well put together every day. Intentionally or accedintally 'White Pony' is... amazing... simply amazing..

Customer Reviews:
one trick pony.......2007-04-10
the film was ok simon was good as the lead actor but the film although it was a road movie spent to much time literally on the road. Scene after scene of footage of the band in the tour van. The music however was top class. as an album its great late in the evening, jonah and how the heart approaches are all great songs
A Lot of Dynamic Energy, Movement and Easy Moments.......2006-06-27
I really enjoy this album. I like Paul Simon's voice and delivery quite a bit. This medley of integrated melodic Rock and Jazz rhythms on these songs is pretty catchy and has a distinct sound all their own. There is a lot of movement here on some of these songs. "Late In The Evening" rocks and stills blow me away. "One-Trick Pony" and "Ace In The Hole" are just so cool. "How The Heart Approaches What It Yearns" is such tender and melancholic jazz. This is one of my favorite Paul Simon albums and it certainly has transcended the test of time. I always found it amusing that this was a soundtrack to his film but I cannot even remember the film any more. However, the songs still endearingly linger. I suppose it is good to have the extra tracks and this is the Compact Disc currently available but I still enjoy listening to my LP of the original release of the album.
Quiet, Thoughtful, and Suprisingly Expressive.......2005-02-22
This album is a sleeper: one rarely goes to One Trick Pony when a Paul Simon mood hits you; certainly his first solo album stands as a testament to his songwriting abilities, and the many hits along the way often draw you to other albums in his catalogue.
But One Trick Pony really stands the test of time: tasteful, beautiful songwriting, a clear, effective concept album sustained through song after song, and superior songcraft and performances (jazz guitarist Eric Gale, keyboardist Richard Tee, drummer Steve Gadd) add an organic, naturally high level of sophistication to the arrangements. Some of the album tracks buried in here are among Simon's finest: "Jonah" is a great track, crying out to be covered again and revived by another artist; the closer "Long Long Day" perfectly captures the mood and feel of the album, "God Bless the Absentee" tastefully describes the drudgery and toil of the working man, sacrificing, putting in time for his family and a dream.
If you were put off by the rather weak film, or have not picked this up lately, you will be surprised. It takes active listening, but there are many rewards here to be found, and you will find yourself returning to the quiet joys of One Trick Pony.
Underrated, understated, and sophisticated.......2004-10-31
After years of success in the folk-pop genre with Garfunkel and his own solo career, Paul Simon decided to get into acting. Bad move. I saw One Trick Pony in the theater and on video. As a movie, despite some very nice little scenes and live performances, it drags. Honestly, it is a little depressing.
However, the songs written for the movie are another matter entirely. Paul Simon took some study in musical composition, and this began to bear fruit in Still Crazy After All These Years and One Trick Pony. Everything here is pop music at the highest level, tinged with a bit of jazz -- the presence of jazz guitarist Eric Gale and keyboardist Richard Tee, the ultra-clean and always innovative drumming of Steve Gadd are an essential part of the superb mix. But the songs are heavenly, melodic, meaningful, poetic, mostly meditative, and well-crafted.
I'd have to say this is my favorite Paul Simon album. Others come close -- Still Crazy, and Rhythm of the Saints. I find this one the most consistent and most worthy of repeated listening. (Not counting the bonus tracks, which may be nice to have, but do not fit in with the original album as a whole. Most of the time you'll want to skip the bonus cuts.)
His best album concept, start to finish........2004-08-24
Never saw the film, but from the moment I purchased this album new in 1980 it has always been one of my favorite LPs. The effervescent first track, "Late in the Evening," is both descriptive and not, for "One Trick Pony" is a late-in-the-evening kind of record, but one you'll remember less for its three upbeat numbers than for its seven mellow session tracks performed with a terrific ensemble and some of Rhymin' Simon's most soulful writing this side of "Rene and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War." Indeed, I rarely play it before midnight anymore, and I sometimes sing the lyrics with Paul as a sort of late-night meditation. You purchase the Rhino version with the bonus tracks at your own risk, for the 10 tracks on the original are so complete, so satisfying taken as a whole, that I see no need to tamper with them.

Amazon.com essential recording
This is a great series of recordings. Leonard Slatkin has generally chosen the right balance of music for the composers used in the series (with terrific cover art from Thomas Hart Benton). This disc is devoted to Copland's film music. The treat here is a version of The Heiress Suite reconstructed by Arnold Freed. Copland's talent for writing for films rested in his ability to identify and maintain themes, at the same time not slacking on the transitional details. This belongs in any Copland collection. --Paul Cook

I was disappointed and don't listen to it much. I like certain songs, but not the rest.

Aaron Copland: the Norman Rockwell of film scoring.......2004-06-14
When I purchased this collection I was already very familiar with Mr. Copland's more popular fanfaric motifs. I was astounded at how much I enjoyed the wonderful division of both sweeping dramatic themes and friendly, home-grown melodies. His film scores for the 1939 'Of Mice and Men' and the 1940 'Our Town' are a testament to classic films set in simpler times. The 'Red Pony' tracks for which the compilation is named are a magical digression from the listener's pre-conceived notions of Copland western fare. When one expects "Rodeo" (arguably one of Copland's most famous themes) one instead receives a gentler and sometimes powerfully moving score. The crowning jewel of this collection, however; is the beautiful suite from his Academy Award winning score for William Wyler's 1949 film of 'The Heiress.' When listening to this magnificent piece of musical history I am reminded how so many great scores are unavailable to listeners of today, and only through recreation and re-recordings can we re-capture those glimpses of film score artistry. I can only hope that many lost or hard to find works continue to be found or recorded so that film score and music lovers in general can continue to discover and rediscover the joy and beauty of our masters in film composing.
Great recording of definitive American film music.......2004-04-08
In a way, filmgoers have been listening to Copland's film scores nearly every time they go to the cinema, since film composers have been shamelessly ripping off Copland for the last half-century or so. When you listen to the "Our Town" suite, do you get the nagging feeling that you have heard this music somewhere before? No doubt you have, in dozens of derivitave film scores from the 1980's and 1990's, sometimes (shamelessly) right down to the exact chord progressions.
How nice it is then to be able to go back to the source, and have rendered in so superb a fashion as it is by Slatkin & the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Slatkin, as usual, upholds his reputation as one of the leading interpreters of American music.
This CD contains the premier recording of "The Heiress Suite," which is a delight to listen to, and of course the fairly well-known "Red Pony" music. Is their a more quintessential piece of "Western" music than the "Walk to the Bunkhouse?" How does a jewish boy from Brooklyn nail it on the head so perfectly, anyway?
Other selections include "Music for Movies," a collection of bits & pieces from an assortment of Copland-scored movies that Copland arranged in 1943, and "Music for Radio," an earlier composition that isn't really "movie music," but fits well with the rest of the compositions on this CD.
Instead of wasting your time on movie soundtracks that are nothing more than just derivitave hack jobs, listen to music by a composer who had truly mastered his craft.
Leonard Slatkin conducts Copland.......2000-11-14
This album is worth it just to get the world premiere recording of "The Heiress Suite" reconstructed by Arnold Freed. Also of note are Walk to the Bunkhouse from "The Red Pony" and New England Countryside. Leonard Slatkin conducts these pieces with great emotional feel that states that this is the same America that Copland wanted to us to embrace.

California-born lead singer Heidi Newfield proves to be Trick Pony's real trick on the debut album from this brash, talented, and road-tested trio. She summons up growling, yelping, howling Janis Joplin-like intensity on tough-but-tender cuts like "On a Night Like This" and "Party of One." She even holds her own with guest vocalists Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash on Trick Pony's cool rockabilly reprise of Cash's "Big River." Newfield's compatriots Keith Burns (guitar and vocals) and Ira Dean (bass and vocals) are decent musicians, but when Newfield fades into the background on second-rate songs like "Just What I Do," "One in a Row," (two of eight songs cowritten by band members), and "Can't Say That on the Radio" the results are far less memorable. On raucous songs like "Pour Me" and "Spent" they indulge in the sort of flashy, aggressive, louder-is-better overkill that typifies far too many young, rowdy retro-rockabilly/honky-tonk bands. On the other hand, when Newfield sinks her emotional teeth into more inspired band compositions like the brassy but vulnerable "Every Other Memory" and the introspective "More Like Me" (which features some great three-part harmony arrangements), Trick Pony back up their youthful verve and abandon with some real heart and soul. --Bob Allen

What a rocker!!.......2006-07-31
With the California born lead vocals from Heidi Newfield, and fellow band mates Keith Burns and Ira dean, This debut album is a rocker!! "POUR ME" tells the bartender to fill it up one more time after her man leaves. "PARTY OF ONE" at your table for two, tells how you're waiting on me like I've waited on you. "BIG RIVER" the late great Johnny Cash tune, was beautifully belted out by Heidi, with Keith, Ira, and a little help from some late great musician friends Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. 'JUST WHAT I DO" tells a tale of Jessie James, The Wright brothers, and famous painter Pablo Picaso, when they
"didn't get any." "ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS" daddy's warning to his little girl, but she has plans of her own. rounds out this Lil' debute rocker from Heidi, Keith and Ira. TRICK PONY is a must buy for all you T.P. fans and for all you newcomers looking for something different and very unique!! You definately won't be disappointed!!
Love this album.......2006-03-31
This is a great debut album. But then I don't claim to be the be all end all expert on country music, I just listen to be entertained and this album not only entertains, it rocks.
VERY underrated group.......2005-02-27
I had this CD for a couple months before I really listened to it closely. I don't think I've heard a better debut CD in quite some time. Heidi has a voice that ranks up there with Trisha, Martina, (okay, maybe not Martina) and Shania. The CD has a little bit of everything-ballads, good old-fashioned country drinkin' songs, and some very catchy hard-driving tunes. I especially like "More Like Me," "Stay in This Moment" and "Spent," but the highlight of the album is "Party of One." This is a must have for country music fans.
They're a Hit!.......2004-06-19
How could anyone resist the wonderful tones of Trick Pony? And unlike lots of other artists who are in for looks and such, these people went through a real competition. I was there when they had the final round to get where they are today, and I loved it! They sound just as great, if not better, in person! My mom very well might have been the last person to speak to them before they won.
Just hearing these songs gives me chills. Their voices are given a hundred percent towards everything, and it really is a great album. They're a hard working group with fun lyrics for everyone to enjoy.
Really Good.......2003-06-20
This is a really enjoyable CD. Not your usual mainstream country stuff. Its full of energy.
That lady has an excellent voice. Besides one or two average songs the rest are really quality stuff.
Buy it !!!

Product Description
A note from Michael: I want to take a moment to share with all of you how the record that you hold in your hand, came to be. For years I have wanted to record a record that not only glorifies God completely, but that also enables those listening to focus on God - to worship God as they listen. I had a Hymnal/Devotional sitting in my studio for quite sometime that I had bought to familiarize myself with traditional Hymns. I didnt grow up in the church, so Im familiar with some of the old Hymns but for the most part, I didnt know so many of them even existed. I started leading worship at my church in 2000 and many people would come up to me after the service to request a Hymn for the following Sunday service. Thats when, and why, I purchased the Hymnal. As I began to flip through the pages of the Hymnal, I was absolutely floored by many of the words. Again, not knowing the melodies of most of the Hymns, the words moved me and spoke to me in a very powerful way. I felt led to start writing new music to some of these amazing lyrics. What started out as one song (Take My Life) turned into another, and another, and yet another. Once all the songs were chosen, written and arranged, I began recording. It started out as an acoustic guitar and vocal only, and then built from there. More guitars, more vocals, and so on. Its been a long journey for this project and yet at the same time, an amazing one. Ive had the opportunity to do so much through the years touring, recording, filming - and yet Ive learned that nothing is as fulfilling as worshiping The Lord. When you worship God, its not about you, its about Him. Its not about performance, its about Him. I never really understood that completely until I started leading worship, which led to this record becoming a reality. Its an honor and a privilege to serve God, and I hope that this music blesses you as much as it has blessed me to make. Always, Michael
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful collection of hymns and worship songs from Stryper's frontman.......2007-04-10
I've been a fan of Michael Sweet and Stryper since 1985 when I first bought Soldiers Under Command. Released in August 2006, Him is Michael's first solo release in six years. This record represents a different direction as Sweet releases his first worship album. Michael continues to raise the bar with each new album he releases.
Him was originally released independently as a "demo" version in 2003 under the title Hims, as the CD was a collection of hymns and worship songs made available through Michael Sweet's website. Since then, he has done a reunion tour with the original Stryper, recorded Reborn with the band's current lineup as well as a tour for that album. Now, Sweet has re-released his worship project through Infinity Music Distribution, with the album becoming more widely available in stores across the country.
If you're a metal/hard rock fan looking for a CD full of Stryperized worship songs and hard rock hymns, you'll be in for a disappointment. Most of the songs on Him are slow to mid-tempo, but Sweet still brings a lot of energy into them. The only song that even comes close to sounding like Stryper is "Calvary," an up-tempo rock version of the church hymn "At Calvary," with electric and acoustic guitars layered over each other. "Calvary" is the only up-tempo rock track on the album.
The rest of the record is largely acoustic with some electric guitar. My overall favorite song is "Surrender," a beautiful acoustic ballad rendition of "I Surrender All," a hymn that captures the essence of complete surrender to Christ and total dependence on Him. Another great song of surrender included on Him is "Take My Life," a passionate plea for the Lord to take the individual and use that person to shine the Light of Christ to those around him or her.
Some other outstanding tracks include "Every Hour," an updated, contemporary version of "I Need Thee Every Hour", "I Know," "Still," "Alleluia" adapted from the hymn "Christ the Lord is Risen Today" and "Gilead," which is adapted from "There is a Balm in Gilead." The album closes with the Christmas hymn "O, Holy Night," in which Michael is joined by a background choir.
If you are a fan of Stryper and/or Michael Sweet's solo work, or if you just love hymns and other great songs of praise and worship, I wholeheartedly recommend you give Him a listen. This is a beautiful album filled with songs that will lift your spirits and encourage you in your walk with Christ. I love this record, and I eagerly look forward to more music in the near future from Michael Sweet, both with Stryper and on his own.
What a Voice!.......2007-01-07
When I realized that Michael was the one singing, "Take My Life", for the movie, "One Night with the King", I was thrilled! Although I didn't recognize him at first in the video, I KNEW that voice! I love to see people use their talent for the LORD. That one song is why I ordered the CD... but, the whole thing is great! I especially like, "Calvary" (very upbeat with wonderful lyrics and a great reminder of what Christ did for us). "Take my life" is a passionate plea to the Lord to truly be a servant for Him, I like his version of "I surrender all" and also the arrangement for "O Holy Night". Oh, and I also like "Allelujah" - and "Balm of Gilead" which has a very good beat! Needless to say, I like the whole thing! I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this CD.
Lyrically Meaningful and Musically Enjoyable.......2006-12-22
What impressed me most about this CD was how it utilized the lyrics from old hymns. This is noteworthy in a time when so much "praise" music is monotonous and self-centered. This album has thological highlights in the words and the music is very pleasant. Personally, I think Michael Sweet's solo effort on "Him" is much more creative and melodious than Stryper's latest album "Reborn." If you like contemporary Christian Music and meaningful lyrics then this album is an excellent addition. Michael Sweet has good range and harmony in his singing and the guitar work fits with the overall theme of the album. Most important, it is a spiritual album.
Michael Sweet - Continuously raising the bar.......2006-11-10
Once again, Michael has outdone himself with this new album. He keeps raising the bar with each new record he does. My favorite song on this album is "O Holy Night". He takes a wonderful classic Christmas song and makes it his very own. What a neat concept he had to take songs from a church hymnal and revamp them. Highly recommend this album to anyone who is a Michael Sweet fan....you WON'T be disappointed!
I couldn't image living without it...serious.......2006-09-23
Outstanding!! If you are looking for some heartfelt modern worship that will bring you closer to our Heavenly Father, then you need this cd. It's absolutely beautiful! It has been such a blessing to my life. Thank you so much for doing this cd Michael! Love it!!!
