A good collection.......2007-05-14
Unlike the huge names, collections by Allen are not many - plenty of his opera performances are recorded, but there are only a few collections. My voice teacher recommended I listen to him to understand better how to deliver power without weight, something we've been working on. Yes, it's all in English, but that's fine, and the quality of Allen's instrument comes through very well.
A Musician of Great Dignity and Style.......2005-07-27
Sir Thomas Allen is one of the enduring baritones who has been able to move throughout the operatic repertoire and the recital stage with intelligence, informed characterization, and immaculate musicianship. To have a recording of some of the roles he has inhabited at this point in his career is a gift (this CD was recorded in 2003). To have the added challenge of retaining the stature of the roles while sung in English translations at the request of Chandos is a credit to his abilities and communicative powers.
English is a difficult language to make musical, though saying that abruptly is countered by the fact that some of the most beautiful operas in history are by Benjamin Britten, a composer who truly understood his native tongue and kept it as fluid as the soaring melodies he wrote, as Thomas Allen proves here in 'Billy in the Darbies' from Britten's 'Billy Budd'. It is the other major arias from Korngold to Wagner to Tchaikovsky to Rossini, Bizet, Mozart, Gounod, Verdi, Thomas, Strauss, and Lehar that Allen proves that English translations do not detract at all from the performances!
For those purists who prefer opera sung in the original language (and for those who don't even need supertitles in the opera house!), then this recording may provide a temporary barrier to respecting Allen's singing. But once caught up in the ease with which he moves from style to style and comedy to drama, it is hard not to relinquish old preferences and not be wholly impressed with the beauty of the voice and the warmth and dignity of this fine musician. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 05
Passed the "Opera in English" test with flying colors........2005-07-04
For me, the test here was Figaro's Cavatina, from Rossini's Barber of Seville - sung in English, as is this entire compilation of 14 operatic favorites, sung by baritone Sir Thomas Allen. Could he pull it off? Could Chandos pull it off? The answer is an unequivocal, unqualified yes! The secret in singing classics in English, that were written and scored in another language, is in three things: pacing, vocal agility and appreciation for "fit", and what greater test for tongue and timing than Figaro? When you listen to this one song, you will understand why Chandos and its benefactor, Sir Peter Moores have such a passion for their Opera in English series. Sir Allen's voice is a matured unmistakably settled baritone voice that contains a lifetime's worth of understanding of the music and words he imparts through his magnificent delivery. For example, when he sings, Tchaikovsky's "You have my love and devotion" from The Queen of Spades, he delivers a smooth and deeply emotional rendition that lacks nothing in translation. Wagner's "Turning my gaze upon this proud assembly", from Tannhäuser is another example of how fine, full orchestration behind a seasoned voice that waxes eloquent with every phrase, can create a mood of relaxed familiarity with word and music, that may be lacking when sung in another tongue. Great Operatic Arias, serves up a smorgasbord of tunes that are familiar, made more so by the care and attention given to creating a place for the Opera in English series in every home library. The mood here is romantic, relaxed and with few exceptions consistent throughout. If you haven't heard Opera in English, this might be a good way to start, given the fact that the listener gets to sample how different composers might sound in other than German, Italian or French. You might be surprised to discover that when done with care, as is obviously the case here, the sound is about as good as it gets. As an added bonus, the booklet that comes with the CD is full of pictures, libretto in English, and biography that gives us a good insight into history of the singer and his identifying rolls.

Smokin' Hot Blues.......2006-12-21
If you are wondering what has happened to Michael Finnigan.........well this is his latest band and release of songs. Michael has teamed up with a smokin' hot blues band from Texas, and they really kick it up on this CD.
Michael carries many of the songs with his smooth, bluesy vocal style that is unequealed, but his compatriots also kick in here and can revv up your nightlights with their vocal arrangements as well.
Michael's songs range from a few gospel influenced fabulous songs "Looking for a Miracle" and "Yield not to Temptation", that will just have you sitting up and praising Michael's vocals and his ability to get your feet to stomping............to a sweet arrangement of Sam and Dave's song......."Part Time Love".
This CD is a must for any Finnigan fan, and for those of you who are not familiar with the smokin Hammond B3 and Leslie speakers coupled with bluesy rich vocals of Finnigan..........then you should get yourself a good bottle of your favorite, kick back and let this CD just make you sweat with the blues, hopes and fun of another great collection from this much underappreciated great........Finnigan.

A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

GOOD Stuff!.......2005-10-10
Wow! I just entered this CD into my Delicious Library software and was blown-away at the current value! It doesn't surprise me however - this is truly a fantastic repertoire of Grusin cuts. I remember well my dad listening to the vinyl a lot when it came out. When I started collecting/transitioning tapes & vinyl into the new CD 'thing' - I got this immediately. Good thing - now ripped into the iPod I enjoy it a lot too (you just gotta love the whistle)! Awesome! This CD is a GRP Digital Master.
Perfect.......2005-06-06
I purchased this CD when it came out as a japanese import CD at an horrendous price. However the music and the sound is fantastic. For those who are fans of Grusin's music it is a pleasure and sonically one of the best CDs I have to test equipement.
Smooth Jazz at its finest.......1999-10-28
I came to the US in 1986 on vacation and first heard Dave Grusin on the radio while staying at the YMCA, ever since that day, I have loved the smooth sound of this artist.
The music I heard at that time was from this album, what more can I say, it's about as perfect as you can get.
My other Grusin recommendations: "Harlequin" (with Lee Ritenour), and "Mountain Dance".
Enjoy!

Dissapointed..........2007-06-13
Not a surf Album...
I was unaware of The Shadows, but researching surf tunes, I came across the group. I originally purchased "Shadows are go!" to hear what they were about and was blown away. Clean, pure and unpretentious. Surf at it's finest.
I figured more Shadows the better, so I got the "The Shadows & Out of the Shadows" compilation cd. It was a let down.
Now, I understand that groups must evolve and try out different genres, but this cd tries too hard. One of my favorites tunes being "Sleepwalk" is good, but there are un-necessary additions and elaborations to the song. The group also sings on this cd. Let's say that vocals were not their best attribute. It was nice to hear how they sound like, (no British accent), but not why I bought the cd.
There is missing on this cd the clean sound that "Shadows are Go!" provides. Different genres of tunes are played (R&B, country, jazz etc..), but it feels that surf was left in the background, although there are a few lifted from earlier gigs. Post-production sound and it just didn't do it for me, but nice to have regardless.

nostalgia satisfaction.......2006-07-27
I had the Out of Shadows album when I was a kid. It got sold when I foolishly got rid of a lot of my vinyl collection. Boy do I regret that.
So, I had to resort to buying a c.d. version. The bonus album did nothing for me. But the 'Out of Shadows' was well worth the investment. The drum solo, remember those, on 'Little B' is worth the trip down nostalgia lane.

...And Into The LIght..........2006-07-18
This is the album in which Paul Jackson Jr. stepped out of the shadows of studio-musicianship and into the jazz recording artist light. And I for one, and glad that he did, for he became one of my favorite artists. He is supported on selected songs by some very talented musicians who later became or were already major stars in their own light...Luther Vandross, George Howard, Kirk Whalum, Najee, and George Duke.
I love listening to this music while driving for it is relaxing and makes me feel very warm and mellow. There are only a couple of jarring exceptions, which is why even though it is one of my favorite Paul Jackson albums, I cannot in good conscience give a five star rating.
My very facorite song on the album is "make it last forever". I have always loved the song (the only song by Keith Sweat I could ever tolerate), and in my opinion it is one of those songs that no matter what style you play or sing it in, still comes out lovely. And lovely is exactly the word for it on this album as well. Paul does two versions of it and I adore both equally. Over the years, I have not heard an instrumental rendition of the song done any better. One version of the song begins the album and the "shocking mix" (as far as I am concerned) ends the album. Luther Vandross is one of the background vocalists on both arrangements.
Favorites sandwhiched in-between "make it last.." include: "all for you" a smooth, airy, melodic piece that makes me feel Paul Jackson is playing his music all for me; and "days gone by" a mid-tempo arrangement with a vocal segment repeating the title that is really a part of the instrumentalization of the song rather than a vocal highlight in it.
The pleasure of the album continues with "road to everlasting","this love's on me" with a beautiful, sincere, vocal solo by Tim Owens, and a very nice jazzy rendition of the old African-American spiritual "I want Jesus to walk with me".
It is when the album tries to do funky-uptempo hip that it struggles a bit. Of those arrangements "the way it has to be" is the only one I really enjoy. "New jazz swing" is the most unpleasant, along with "my thang". I find them to be too jarring and they somewhat spoil the mood established by the music early on. The reese's pieces mix of "encino shuffle" actually ends the album, but in my opinion does not even need to be there.
Having said that, the ablum remains a favorite of mine, even after all this time, and I highly recommend it.
one really fine cut.......2001-06-29
This is an uneven album, to say the least. I tracked it down for Make It Last Forever, which is a fine arrangement and a great groove (smooth jazz-ish). A couple of other cuts come reasonably close, but the rest descend quickly into self-indulgent funk. The snippet of Make It Last that you can hear on this page is probably the least interesting moment in the whole five minutes. So, if you want to take a chance, or if you like heavy funk and grooves...here you go.

Spur of the Moment.......2004-02-18
Spur of the moment is one of the most versatile and entertaining bands I've ever seen. Its too bad they didn't include some of the hot tracks that I have the pleasure of hearing them play in the MD/DC area on a bi-weekly basis. "People make the world go round", and anything they do by Earth Wind and Fire are my favorites. Not to mention their own, "In my corner" and others. If you get to seem them, do it! If you're thinking about buying there CD's, do it.
Smooth road West.......2003-03-24
I met Kenny when he was 9 years old, he was a pest! If I had any Idea there was that much talent in those hands, I would not have smacked them, I would have kissed them.I got the CD while in Maryland on Vacation, and played it all the way to INDIANA, Now thats smooth! I loved how "Your in my Corner" was the proper love song for the road, totally inspiring. And "Longer than Forever" just did'nt seem long enough. I tell ya, anytime I'm having the out of D.C. blues, "Spur of the Moment" get the nod to the CD player.
Just that good.......2002-04-11
Spur of the Moment is by far one of the best Jazz groups I have heard in a while. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform several times at a jazz festival in Virginia and believe me I was not disappointed then either. Keep up the good work fellas!
Smooth, Sexy and Sensual.......2002-02-10
I am listening to Spur as I type this review and it is the most sexy, sensous music I have heard in a long time. I have never heard of this group before I was given this CD and I was totally blown away. At first, there rendition of "I Believe I Can Fly" was my ultimate favorite, but the more I listened to it, it became hard to choose a favorite. "For Me" is excellent,as is "In Key", "Somehow I Know" and others. I can't wait to see them live. This definitely goes to the top of my favorite jazz groups. I'll be looking for some of their earlier work. Keep up the good work Spur. You have a real fan here.
Capital Jazz Lives.......2001-01-31
Spur of the Moment has done it again. I used to live in the Wash DC area and I had the pleasure of seeing Spur perform on many occasions. They never disappointed me. With this album, the addition of Maysa and the other vocal and background enhancements, they have taken that necessary step to get "Outside the Beltway". BUY IT! The day will soon come when this long underrated group will be Huge and we'll be able to say we own their early recordings (which, of course, I do).

Album Description
With a world-class vocal style and blistering guitar virtuosity, Robert Valdes delivers amazing Melodic Rock with "Out Of The Shadows".
Customer Reviews:
Flash Back.......2004-05-25
Mr. Valdes is talented but the songs lack originality. From start to finish, it is as if one is listening to an extemely lengthy tribute to long haired stars of the past. The cover gives the impression of a reflective examination of a long career while the music is more of a collection of personal hits with little thought to the whole musical concept whatever that may be. The music has potential but needs to be rearranged, rethought and possibly updated with a clear theme carried throughout the project.
WOW!!!!.......2003-07-29
All I can say is, WOW!!!. This is a great cd. You definitely won't be disappointed by this one. I discovered this cd at melodicrock.com, where it received a favorable review. After downloading the free mp3's on Robert's website, I was thoroughly impressed. I could give you a play by play for each track, but you'd be better of hearing it for yourself. I will say that there isn't one song that I skip when I listen to this cd. And you do get your fair share of mid tempo rockers, ballads and up tempo tunes.
Get this one! It's money well spent!!!!
