No Fistful of Ennio.......2007-01-31

Ennio Morricone wrote great soundtrack music, that's for certain. But no retrospective of his work is complete without the inclusion of more than one lone example from the three mid-60's "spaghetti westerns" he scored for Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood. Anyone familiar with the UNITED ARTISTS label LPs of "Fistful Of Dollars," "For A Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" might agree with this.

As for what's here-- most of ENNIO MORRICONE * FILM MUSIC Volume 1 is forgettable incidental stuff. Except for "The Battle Of Algiers (Theme)," the opening and closing tracks are the best. They bookend what turns out to be a disappointing collection, lacking in both liner notes and the brilliance Morricone demonstrated over a 30 year span.

Moscow Farewell is definitely my pick of the lot. Sacco And Vanzetti was a pleasant surprise once I listened to it a couple of times. It is lively and could be played on a wedding dance floor for the whole family. This is great album to listen to while in bed!

Simply a 'Must Purchase' for those with a passing interest in Morricone's work.......2005-09-13

Arguably one of the greatest (if not the greatest) Film composer of the 20th Century. Not only has he scored some of the most influential and instantly recognisable pieces of film music during his roughly 50 years of composing atmospheric film scores. Whether he's providing the spooky dramatics for a spaghetti Western" or constructing the ingenious use of classical arrangements of brooding cinematic pieces, he has (in most cases) consistently delivered contemporary music that has provided the atmospheric foil for the picture in question. And with a collection of musical influences that were as far ranging as: classical, jazz, pop, rock, electronic, avant-garde, and Italian music, he is able to deliver a variety of film scores that are as diverse as they are beautifully composed.

This compilation is collection of some of the seminal, gritty, theatrical, and dramatic film music, that would go on to define his career, via reflective orchestration and memorable motifs, ingenious use of diverse arrangements and instrumentation. There is a majority of his highlights on this disc, with the magnificently brooding "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" opening the disk. what follows is a truly sublime collection of music that is in parts truly beautiful and utterly atmospheric, so tracks such as "Once Upon A Time In The West", benefit from the haunting melodies and stirring volins, that are possibly more in tone with orchestrated music than contemporary music. Or the quiet piano introspection and melancholic arrangements that make up "Moscow Farewell", are simply deserving of being placed amongst the finest soundtrack compositions ever. "Dedicace", contains some of the most litting melodies in recent memory, impossibly sad and affecting, it is a haunting bittersweet composition that is both organic & reflective, over which the volins provide the musical backdrop. And that's without the mention of "For Love One Can Die", the autumnal orchestrated track, that pulls from Italian sweeping gangster original film scores, and makes a hushed and dissonant recording, that feels like a sublime throwback to the mafia-related shenanigans of 60's chicago via the use of restrained piano, that really is quite lovely and adds substantial weight to the composition.

If you are looking for a Ennio Morricone compilation....short of buying a boxset, you'd be hard pressed in beating this for value for money. It's a fantastic summary of his work and covers a fair amount of material. And is the perfect introduction to his work, (especially if you just want to buy one compilation of his work). This is highly recommended to fans both old and new, and is boosted by the compilers making a great job of the selection. So if you don't want to have to splash out on an expensive disk, to hear his influential work...this really is the first place you should start.

Volume I of III, of this 'best of' Morricone trilogy, is the best of the three. This volume consists of music that can be listened to alone and socially, with some of the most catchy and minimalist rhythms you'll ever hear. You'll listen to this album and wonder what movie you've heard that song from before(Morricone's canon being primarily for film scores). If you're hear because you're trying to get the song from a movie, and you've never really heard of Morricone before, then you've luckily stumbled upon some of the best music I've ever heard. Or, if you're a Morricone fan and you'er looking for a good compilation, since Morricone has done too many film scores to even possibly own them all, then this is good to have. I wouldn't really reccommend Volume II and III unless you're looking or a very comprehensive collection of Morricone, since Volume I seems to me to carry his most absolute best. Definetely buy this album, it's very good.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Rare is the debut that displays such fully formed talent as Iceland's Sugarcubes' first album. Highlighted by the Cocteau Twins-influenced single "Birthday," two other provocative singles, "Deus" and "Coldsweat," and by the incredible vocal gymnastics of Björk Gudmundsdottir, Life's Too Good brilliantly shows a new band staking out its own sonic space. Einar Orn contributes an electronically reprocessed trumpet, and a few awkwardly charming and ranting vocals as well, but this is clearly Björk's show. Her vocal range is staggering. The CD reissue adds six extra tracks, several of which are sung in Icelandic. --Rob O'Connor

I really love 'Lifes too good' Its one of the best albums i've ever heard. I espicially like the songs 'birthday' and 'deus'. I much prefer bjork in those days. take my advice buy the album or regret it!!!!!!!

It's STILL good!!!!.......2005-08-09

I saw The Sugarcubes when I was a freshman in college in 1989. They rocked then and this cd is a great old stand by...I've had to replace it many times since it came out because friends that I would introduce Bjork and the boys to would steal it from me. I never cared about replacing it because I was able to share some good music with my good friends. No matter what new comes out, this cd stays in my rotation. What are you waiting for?!?!?!? MILK AND BISCUITS??? Seriously, this is much more entertaining than the music that Bjork records today. When she fronted The Sugarcubes, Bjork was one cool chick from Iceland. These days she's just odd.

Delicious........2005-07-05

This is the debut album from "that band Bjork was in". I got this the year it came out with Siouxsie's "Peep Show", and have enjoyed it ever since. "Life's Too Good" has a wonderful energy, is both wild and pretty, and is one of the great alternative releases of the late 80's. "Birthday" may be the only thing close to a hit here, but "Motorcrash", "Mama", "Delicious Demon", and "Dues" are all excellent too. Truth be known, I really like every track here, and the remixes are decent as well. I would recommend this album to anyone, but especially to major fans of Bjork of course. Being a fan of hers and not knowing The Sugarcubes, is like being a fan of Sting, and not knowing about The Police. They do have a collection out also.

if you're buying this because björk's on it then you're making a big mistake because she sounds like doodoo. syke!! haha that was just to get your blood flowing. seriously though she is overshadowed by her once-husband einer orn benediktsson who sings in a tone of voice so wonderful that words cannot even begin to explain, like a poet reading his own poetry.

How Original!.......2004-11-04

Before Bjork the solo artist, there was THE SUGARCUBES, the most internationally famous and idiosyncratic punk/pop groups that ever hit from Iceland. The album's title exemplifies the music itself: it's simply too good. Each song infuses the elements of what makes The Sugarcubes: fun, corkiness, idiosyncratic behavior, unique rhythms, beats, and harmonies, sometimes abstruse and profound lyrics, and eerie, soft, and melodic singing (and sometimes wailing). At the end it all turns out into some wild rollercoaster ride through the corky and wild world of The Sugarcubes. I have been a Bjork fan lately, but now i am even happier that i can get back to Bjork's creative and musical roots by listening to the Sugarcubes. I recommmend this to anybody whose a fan of Bjork, or anybody that's interested or curious in hearing a new twist to punk/pop music.

Cool! More emo for the hit stations to pump into the ears of mindless musicoids who obey whatsoever the airwaves tell them! Actually, that was a bit harsh on this band's fans. But anyway, this is an absolutely atrocious release with the exception of "I Wanna Live" or whatever it's called. I heard this album about two years ago and that's the only song that stood out to me. Don't buy this! It's pop trash and there are much more sophisticated bands you could look for. (I.E. Lostprophets, still slightly emo but much better lyrically and instrumentally)

Hahahahaha. This band sucks, period. Honestly, I have never heard such horrible displays of music. Wait I have, that was Paris Hilton, K-fed, and Simple Plan. Wow. Hard to believe that the music scene has become this awful. I wonder what kind of idiots run the music industry these days. Whatever happened to the good ole days of BLack Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Jimi Hindricks, Metallica, Pantera, Alice in Chains, etc. All of these good bands/artists have basically been replaced with whiny, wimpy, bubble-gum pop/rock bands/artists like GC, Simple Plan, Jessy McCartney, Paris Hilton, etc. I can't understand why wimps with no talent whatsoever are given recording contracts.

Anyways, back to this piece of crap band. This album just flat-out sucks. All the tracks are terrible. The lead singer sounds sexually frustrated which is absolutely annoying to hear. The guitar playing is a joke. These guitarists clearly don't know how to create a good riff. All they use is power chords and distortion. The production is terrible too. Btw, if you wanna know how whiny the lead singer can get, just listen to the first single off the album. It has him doing a spoken part which sounds more like a crying four-year-old than anything. It is ridiculous but not surprising when I hear most high school students saying how good this band is or that they rock hard. People, you don't know anything about what good music is or what rocks hard. For something that rocks hard, try Pantera, Metallica, Killswitch Engage for that.

I will be training to become an SBI agent in two years and know that I will have to deal with many juveniles in my line of work which makes me hate this band even more b/c that's what most of them listen too and rap(don't get me started on how much I despise this). I don't have a lot of respect for adolescents these days come to think of it. The fact that many of them are such spoiled brats and complain that their lives are horrible b/c their parents are too strict really pisses me off. In essence that's what this band talks about in their lyrics, especially on this album. I have had all I can take of bands like this and their fans who are ungreatful to be alive. This album deserves 0 stars, btw.

P.S. Also, if I have offended anyone by this posting, deal with it!

An Angsty Saga.......2006-09-29

I've given up my Good Charlotte fan status and tried to chuck my "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" CD ages ago. It's kind of personal, but I just kind of outgrew them.
Anyways, on this CD, I think the only song I like is "Predictable." I was resistant to it, but it wore me down. The speech-rant part in the middle cracks me up every time. Sorry, Benji and Joel. I know you showed vulnerability, but that whole "You're never coming back!" stuff makes me laugh.
It's not really good, and not my favorite thing ever, but it's fun to sing along like angst-filled pseudo-punks (with the windows firmly closed, to keep our cred intact, of course).

I recomend this cd to all theater fans. Even the ones who love a great, toe tapping score. The song they sing in titled Applause can be seen in the Bonus Performances on the DVD titled Broadways Lost Treasueres. That is how I first heard of Applause. It was very entertaining!

Love the CD ( I have had the vinyl recording ever since it came out), but wish it could be released on Video or DVD(does anyone out there know if this will ever happen?). I saw the television production with Lauren Bacall and Larry Hagman back in the early 1970's and saw an amateur production of it here in Melbourne as well and having always loved the whole concept of the movie, I feel that it transferred well to the stage.

"Soundtrack" recordings are records/cds transfered from from movies ONLY.

Live theatre does not use pre-recorded "soundtracks" - the casts perform live on stage and these "original cast recordings" are made in recording studios and designed for home listening.
PLEASE.... maintain your credibility by using the correct term!

Finally, after years of negotiation Decca Broadway is making the 1970 Tony winning musical APPLAUSE avaialble on Cd. Was it worth the wait? Well, yes and no. APPLAUSE is one of those late 60's musicals adapted from a hit play/novel/movie and offering lots of glitz and energy to cover up the deficiencies of the show itself.

Star Lauren Bacall provided the "star" quality though she has no real singing voice but as an actress she rises above it bringing the character to vivid life. Len Cariou sings well as Bacall's boyfriend but has very little to do.

Bacall gets the key gems and with two major exceptions any of the numbers in which she does not appear can be ignored. The first exception is the lively title song - a tribute to the power of applause. It has almost nothing to do with the plot but still stopped the show nightly. The other,is a dramatic soliloque for Penny Fuller in the (virtually) non-singing role of Eve: "One Hallowe'en." This is Eve's big moment to really show her true colours and Fuller makes the most of it. Missing from the recording - becasue it is a dialogue scene - is the following moments when Eve recieves humiliating comeuppance.

The original Lp release was done by ABC records and had an annoying "boxy" sound quality that has not been corrected on the cd. The very short selection has been filled out with demo recordings by composer Charles Strouse and a couple of the cut songs sound quite interesting. Packaging is up to Decca Broadway's usual high standards.

i have a copy of this recording on LP, and have enjoyed it for approx 25 yrs. couldn't wait for the cd. bought it the first time i saw it.
i am wondering if anyone has seen the tv production of APPLAUSE starring LAUREN broadcast circa 1974 on tv? and is there any possibility of obtaining a copy on anything? the production was FANTISTIC, to say the least!!!

Thematically, director Robert Altman's career sometimes seems an endless series of left turns into the unexpected; the one constant has been a rich and rewarding attention to the intricacies of character development and interaction. Composer Patrick Doyle underscores Gosford Park's Merchant-Ivory/Agatha Christie/Altman-wit fusion and '30s British upper-class setting with a score that's period spot-on, character-rich, and often sadly evocative. Doyle's restraint is masterful, often leaning on piano, accordion, and small string arrangements that emphasize the characters' intimacies and the film's drawing room settings. Key to the story are a handful of prewar songs by Ivor Novello (who's also a character in the film), ranging from the sprightly humor of "And Her Mother Came Too" and "What a Duke Should Be" to the romantic schmaltz of "I Can Give You the Starlight" and "Why Isn't It You?" The latter is performed here at the piano (and, remarkably, live before the cameras) by Jeremy Northam. Leavened by a small jazz ensemble and a few darkly ominous cues, Doyle's score is an understated gem. --Jerry McCulley

The original music is creative and very listenable. It is typical of popular music of the 1930s. This CD is highly recommended to those people who enjoy music from the 1920s and 1930s.

Better than the movie.......2004-12-08

Many people, I believe, buy a soundtrack because they are mesmerized by the movie and want to extend the experience by listening to something that reminds them of it. But "Gosford Park" is hardly that kind of movie. It is brilliant and atmospheric as it analyzes the British class system, but that's hardly the kind of thing that wins the heart. The soundtrack of this movie was my favorite CD from last year, and the reasons I liked it had nothing to do with the movie.

Why is this music so compelling and winning?

First, it is fun to discover the marvellous talent of Ivor Norvello. His music is half of the charm of the soundtrack. Some songs are funny ("Her mother came too"), some beautiful ("I can give you the starlight") and some poignant ("The land of might have been"). I had not encountered Norvello before this film. Jeremy Northam's perfect delivery of Norvello's songs would not leave me after I'd seen the film. Days later, I found the songs had taken up residence in the back of my head, insisting that I go back to the soundtrack to make them a permanent part of my musical life.

Second, there is the charm of the orchestral music composed by Patrick Doyle. Sometimes people wonder "why aren't they writing beautiful classical music any more?" Well, they are. It goes into soundtracks, however, rather than being commissioned by orchestras. The test for the quality of Doyle's compositions is that you don't need to refer to the film to appreciate this music. It simply charms and intrigues us with its own merits.

My third reason for loving this CD is too personal to mention here.

I give this CD my highest personal recommendation.

Unlike many reviewers here, I didn't buy the CD to hear the Ivor Novello songs or Jeremy Northam's voice. I actually liked the instrumental tracks, and never actually thought I'd like to listen to something played on an accordion.

However, Mr. Doyle's music portrays the lethargy of the snobby Upstairs very well to the contrast of the relative energy of Novello's songs, which the Downstairs servants enjoy, but the Upstairs people can't stand.

My dislikes about the CD include the female singer who can't really sing and the length of the CD. Some of these cues are only about a minute long. WHY pay so much money for such a short CD??? Why not add more music??

Overall though, if you liked either Doyle's music or Novello's songs (hopefully the listener will like both), it's a CD worth getting.

I fell in love with this soundtrack when I watched Gosford Park in the cinemas.

Sometimes period music, sometimes mystery music, sometime personal music. Jeremy Northam's songs are simply delicious and I love hearing them.

I liken the style (not type) of mix to You've Got Mail.

Heaps of fun and lovely to listen to.

When I saw the movie at the theater I kept thinking I've got to have the soundtrack to this movie because it is so beautiful. I also really enjoyed the sung songs 6.And Her Mother Came Too, 10.I Can Give You The Starlight, 11.What A Duke Should Be, 16. Only For A While, 20. The Way It's Meant To Be, 24. The Land That Might-Have-Been!! I think that Patrick Doyle did a wonderful job of scoring this movie the just fits right in with it all, I only wish there was more to listen to!! I highly recommend this album to everyone who liked the movie and people who love great soundtracks, you will not be sorry if you buy this!!!!

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Inner City is Chicago house vocalist Paris Grey and Detroit producer Kevin Saunderson. Later the group added Ann Saunderson, Kevin's wife. Inner City topped dance charts in America and Britain 11 times, hit Britain's Top 40 eight times, and sold over six million records. This is a comprehensive collection of their career. 15 tracks total, many in their original 12" mix form. Highlights include "Pennies from Heaven", "Hallelujah", "Let It Reign", "Good Life", "Do You Love What You Feel", "Fire", "Unity" and more. Great early house music.

Does it get any finer?.......2006-01-12

This is an absolutely outstanding album. Railroad Earth has, for the last year or so, occupied one of the top spots on my list of favorite bands. The mellow grooves, top notch newgrass pickin', folk roots, and improvisation in their live shows makes them a band on the rise.

This album highlights what is one the true strengths of this band - Todd Sheaffer's songwriting abilities. The man is a true wordsmith. His lyrics are poetry.

It is interesting to read some of the other posts that talk about the comparison between RRE and the Dead. I certainly don't want to wade into a "which band is better" argument, but I will pass along this little tidbit. At a recent Railroad Earth concert in Virginia just before the turn of the new year, a buddy of mine turned to me and said, "You know, of all the bands out there, these guys really carry on the spirit of the Grateful Dead." I agreed with him. Their rootsy nature and folk-inspired sound really touch into the spirit of the Dead that other jambands can't recreate.

"The Good Life" is Railroad Earth's third CD. The band was formed in 2001 and came out with its first CD ("Railroad Earth") in 2001. This was followed by 2002's "Bird in the House." The band's genre might best be described as bluegrass. I'm not a huge bluegrass fan, but I did enjoy their first two CDs. With "The Good Life", the band has branched out a bit, making it my favorite RRE CD.

As reviewers note, RRE reminds the listener of other bands but manages to sound original at the same time. In addition to the influences suggested by others, I'd add The Band and Neil Young to the mix. Lead singer and principal songwriter Todd Sheaffer sounds a lot like John Lennon and a couple songs remind me of John Lennon material (Beatles and solo stuff).

In addition to the stylistic variety, the songs rang from the uplifting ("Storms"), the serious ("Goat"), the touching ("In the Basement") and the humorous (the final bonus song). It's not often that a band can range over such a wide variety of styles. My favorite song is "Long Way to Go", which starts out like late John Lennon and ends sounding like Black Gospel.

Timeless Music.......2005-09-02

I happened to hear of these guys by chance, word of mouth, and I cant be more thankful. RRE music is timeless. I'm a true rock n roller, I dont know how to describe this band..I never cared for blue grass or Grateful Dead, but these guys have an original quality to them thats special. The music is timeless, meaningful lyrics, great musicianship, and most importantly HOOKS & MELODIES. Songs that stick with you. I highly recommend this band to everyone that I'm in contact with. I'm very picky when it comes to music, Im a musician and I dont like alot of whats going on out there in the music world. This band is a breath of fresh air and makes us realize that theres still a few talented people in the world that play some great music. Theres not many. Buy and listen to RRE, they deserve it!

Impressive Album.......2005-08-02

I got this album based on a friend's suggestion and was honestly sceptical. But much to my surprise, I have been incredibly impressed with Railroad Earth - this is a great album and I would recommend it to just about anyone. Their music crosses several genres and I have found it to be very enjoyable. I haven't been able to stop listening to it since it arrived.

Magnificent.......2005-07-03

This CD (RRE's third) was released in June of 2004, but I didn't know about it because I was preparing to take the Ohio bar exam. Under those circumstances, it's just as well that I _didn't_ know about it, or I'd have spent all my study time listening to the durned thing.

Well, now I've got it, and it's every bit as good as I expected. And it cements RRE's position as my favorite currently existing band in any category.

The musical duties are distributed in pretty much the same way here as on their previous two releases: Todd Sheaffer handles vocals and guitar and does the bulk of the songwriting; John Skehan, Tim Carbone, and Andy Goessling provide the band's trademark swirling-and-skirling texture; new bassist Johnny Grubb (replacing Dave Von Dollen) and percussionist Carey Harmon provide the solid ground they take off from and land on. Every one of them is an ace at his job -- and Skehan (mostly mandolin), Carbone (mostly fiddle), and Goessling (mostly banjo and guitar) seem to play every instrument under the sun at one time or another. The arrangements sound tighter than on their previous releases and everything seems a little more structured.

As on _The Black Bear Sessions_ and _Bird In A House_, the real heart of the CD is Sheaffer's songwriting, which this time out seems a bit less otherworldly and a bit more focused and topical. On a few songs the other guys write some of the music (and Skehan contributes a fine instrumental), but basically, things go in the direction Sheaffer takes them.

And it works yet again. Sheaffer is stretching himself here and his material sometimes enters what, for RRE, is new musical territory -- but every song is a gem and there's really not a weak moment on the entire CD. As before, many of the songs are 'long' without _feeling_ long: you'll listen to a tune without even noticing that six or seven minutes have gone by, and then wonder why it ended so soon.

Probably the most daring piece is 'Goat', an utterly brilliant, penetrating, and haunting take on Leviticus 16:21-22 (and my current favorite song on the CD, though it may not be for all listeners). And probably the most flat-out gorgeous is 'Said What You Mean', a captivating ballad that, to my ear at least, recalls _Double Fantasy_-era John Lennon. In general, Sheaffer has written lots more lyrics to these songs than on the band's earlier CDs, with the result that there's significantly less trading of instrumental solos. (That's not to say that the rest of the band is idle, just that Sheaffer doesn't always stop singing while they work their mojo.)

Which reminds me of one other well-considered change: this time there's a lyric booklet, with the words to all the songs except the hidden twelfth track. I like lyric booklets in general, and I especially like them for RRE because it's occasionally hard to hear exactly what Sheaffer is singing.

RRE occupies some weird niche in musical space that is somehow entirely their own but simultaneously 'next door' to lots of wildly disparate styles. Of course they've been compared (and appropriately) to the Grateful Dead, but on _The Good Life_ they also, at fleeting moments, remind me of e.g. the Beatles (especially the aforementioned Lennon), the Byrds, ELO, Tom Petty, Arlo Guthrie, and the Rolling Stones. (Which is pretty amazing for a mostly acoustic band relying mainly on bluegrass instruments. Part of it is Sheaffer's voice, and part of it is because these guys are just so danged _good_ on all those instruments.)

I'm not going to try to rank these three CDs in order of quality; I've got my favorite parts of each, and no doubt you'll have yours, and yours may not be the same as mine. The main thing is, if you like this band, they really haven't released a CD you can afford to skip.
