Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. "Off the Grid," for example, departs from the otherwise unbreakable chill and rips the proceedings wide open, blooming again and again in a series of pulsing riffs that celebrate the very institution of the instrumental groove. Listen to The Music not the critics........2007-07-10

Wow. Some of the reviews on this page leave my mouth agape with wonder. What in the world is so very wrong with this album? There are a few that are saying there's "no fun' in this record or the 'dynamic is gone'(whatever that means).What record are you listening to? To all of you naysayers I say Fooey and double Fooey! THIS ALBUM IS GREAT. It's a groovy little record period. But that's all it is. It doesn't have to be the next Sgt. Peppers or Paul's Boutique or whatever. You have to take a look at it on it's own. I will say this for this album, no other band is making music like this right now. This is completly original music. Why aren't these guys given the chance to grow and expand? If you don't like this album fine, whatever. Go listen to your 12" of Brass Monkey until your parents kick you out of the basement.
For those of you out there who want something a little groovy and different, get it. Meanwhile I'm going to mix myself a gimlet and listen to a great little combo called the Beastie Boys. Their new album is cool as hell.

Play this CD anytime........2007-07-10

Just put this CD on when you're not specifically trying to listen to music. Just let it play. It's fun, but can't be the center of attention like the Beastie's cds that you're used to. It's not all that entertaining to sit down and listen to (like when driving) even for a fan of jambands like myself, but it's the perfect album for anytime.

I don't expect this album to go over too well in America. Maybe in the West a bit, but over all, this album will go un-noticed, which is a shame because it's got a nice selection of little grooves like you'd hear in a grass bar.

THE MIX-UP.......2007-07-08

The Beastie Boys are probally the only band that does Hip-Hop, Punk, and these instrumentals. The Cd is not bad. If you remember the instrumentals from "check your head" , "Ill communications" and "Hello Nasty" they pretty much sounds the same.
This is not their first Cd of instrumentals. "Ill Sounds From Way Out" was a collection of songs from "check your head" and "ill communications".
Overall these songs show that the Beastie Boys are more than just another Hip-Hop group.

Michael Brecker's Best Ever........2007-07-09

I think other reviewers have said it better than I could when it comes to Michael Brecker's final album "Pilgrimage" so, I'll be brief. This is his best album ever. The playing as well as the musicianship between Brecker and his all-star line-up of Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, John Patitucci and Brad Mehldau is stellar on every track here. There isn't one weak track recorded here.
"Pilgrimage" features his best playing and his best compositions - truly a testament and high mark in the legacy of this respected sax player. If you don't believe me, read the other reviews here and then buy this CD.
An Instant Classic for 2007.

If you are a fan of Michael Brecker this is a must have. As if the fact that it will be the last cd he ever releases isn't enough reason to purchase it, it is also a remarkable musical masterpiece. I honestly do not know how he managed to play at a level that is above the usual while practically on his death bed. The accompanying musicians are as good as they get as well, so the interaction between players and overall playing is just spectacular throughout.

Brecker could never do anything wrong in my opinion, and so nobody will expect me to write a critical, balanced review of Pilgrimage. But even compared to the other Brecker albums, and especially with the knowledge that not only was this his last album, but probably one of the last times these masters and friends would see him, it is brilliant. It has the haunting, fragile, and urgent energy of a dying wish. At the same time, it conveys peace, joy, and caring for life. Everybody is at their best, and no Brecker fan will want to be without it. Preaching to the quire aside, it is also a good place to start your Brecker or modern jazz listening experience, as the album is quite accessible in its simple complexity. Absolutely recommended.

Martina McBride has long been a champion of music as social consciousness, particularly for abused women ("Independence Day") and children. On Waking Up Laughing, her ninth album and the follow-up to Timeless, her platinum-selling album of country classics, she advances the theme while expanding it. While two songs explore the issue of unwed mothers (particularly the exquisite "Love Land," which closes the album), and another, "Beautiful Again," touches on child sexual abuse, her overall repertoire embraces the wholeness of family, and of standing strong together in the face of adversity and defeat. Musically, McBride has always proved to be an elegant thorn--her song selection is often inspired (and here, she co-wrote three tunes, including the skyscraping single "Anyway"), but she has tended to use her huge, ride-the-wave soprano full-tilt, without employing the subtle shadings that would make her even more emotionally resonant. On Waking Up Laughing she seems to have worked on the problem, yet in her second foray as solo producer, she still tends to gild the lily instrumentally--inflating string bridges between choruses, for example, or loading the opening country-pop track, "If I Had Your Name," with a Southern-rock guitar break, a listen-to-me fiddle showcase, a Celtic guitar intro, and a close that brings to mind George Harrison's sitar in play-it-backward mode. That said, she makes fine use of what sounds like a black female choir on the uplifting "For These Times," and wisely keeps the haunting break-up ballad "Tryin' to Find a Reason" (with Keith Urban's harmony vocals and guitar solo) lean and affecting. I first became acquainted with Martina McBride's beautifully expressive voice through listening to her sing "Valentine" on one of Jim Brickman's albums... Instantly smitten, I began buying her music and have been happily listening every since then... This newest CD has a wealth of good music... with the incredibly lyrical "Beautiful Again", "House Of A Thousand Dreams" and "Anyway"... as with any new CD, I kept waiting for the few songs that I didn't care for... but this never happens to me with Martina's insightful song selection and soaring vocals -- I find myself listening to this album for hours at a time... and know that it is indeed a golden nugget for Martina to cherish always...! Most impressive A++++++!

Brilliant CD !!.......2007-06-23

There are some artists whose albums I buy without even hearing a note. Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw and especially TRACE ADKINS, TRAVIS TRITT and RANDY TRAVIS. There are very few female artists who I buy as I usually only end up liking 2-3 tracks. Martina McBride is changing that and becoming one of those artists who I automatically buy.

Here in NZ we don't have country radio stations so we don't get to hear new tracks and artists unless we do so online (which I do). In some ways this is great because we don't hear songs thrashed until all the meaning and life have been wrung out of them.

Having said all that, Waking up crying is a great CD. I played it through 4 times without skipping through any tracks. I loved every track. Although 1 or 2 were a bit "poppy" it just shows Martina's versatility. My all time favourites are I'll still be me, Love land, House of a thousand dreams and of course the track Anyway which gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

5++ for this album which will not disappoint new and old fans

R. Kelly's rep could be considered controversial at best, but that's not to say the man who does for raunch what Beyoncé does for backsides (that is, caused the masses to arrive at a more multidimensional consideration) is not a fascinating artist. On Double Up, arguably his most sex-crazed, diabolically sleazy CD to date, Kelly grunts like a monkey, envisions a hot and heavy interplanetary romp, and indulges in NC-17-rated rhymes. Stylistically, the self-described king of R&B kicks up a hip-hoppy storm, spitting rapid-fire rhymes and tossing the 'n' word around too freely. But then there's the saving grace: that voice. Throughout a couple of inspirational numbers and collaborations with friends such as Usher ("Same Girl") and Nelly ("Tryin' to Get a Number"), Kelly does what he did so capably on the megahit "I Believe I Can Fly": he reaches even reluctant listeners with deep-seated sincerity. What a shame!.......2007-07-06

The completely unnecessary use of profanities makes this unsuitable listening to genuine music lovers. Come on Mr Kelly, there are young people out there who look up to you, and expect better. There are a few good tracks but I did not finish listening to this and doubt I will play it again.

What Does The "R" really stand for?.......2007-07-05

What does the R in his name really stand for? RAUNCHY!!! And this Raunchy R&B King has left the building and should not come back after this cd! I used to be a big fan of R Kelly's but after listening to this cd, I could not even get through most of the songs on it. I found it to be so tasteless and it showed that R. Kelly has no CLASS!!! He has reached an all time low with this cd. We all know that R can sing, write and produce, but it seems like he is so consumed with partying and sex, sex, sex. It makes one wonder whether he is confused about who he is and what he really wants to be doing in his life. One minute he is singing about getting you so wet and the next, he is singing about God. He has such a gift that he can even sing gospel music and touch your heart. It makes you wonder, is he trying to serve two Masters?, because you can't. I think that this is the WORST Cd that he has every made! There are a handful of songs on there that are okay. The duet with Usher, Same Girl and why in the heck would he put a song on this cd dedicated to the people of the Virgina tragedy called Rise Up. The majority of the cd is just nasty!!! I think that R Kelly believes that he can sing anything and it will sell and it pretty much has happened whether it goes gold, or platinum. Some of his previous works have been about sex and partying but not to the extend of what he is singing about on this cd. He uses the "MF" and "N" word a lot on this cd and it's like he is saying, "f _ _ _ all ya'll cause I can sing what I want and still get paid"! I would not recommend anyone buy this cd unless they want to hearing about f _ _ __ _ _ _, smoking, partying or fighting. What a waste of money! What a waste of talent and if he keeps this up, he may find himself caught up in a lot more sorted things besides being accused of having sex with minors and making dirty music. If ya wanna be the King of R&B, start singing like one and stop putting your sorted sex life or fantasies on cd's. It would be nice to see him do a REAL R&B Cd without all the cursing and sex acts that he seems to sing a lot about. Kings & Queens lead by example, walk upright with pride and dignity and keep their private affairs and fantasies in their bedrooms. Now, Let's pop the Crystal on that!

Double Up is right up there with TP.3 as far as being R. Kelly's worst album. Every artist is allowed a foul-up. Kells' foul-up was TP.3, but he's done it again with Double Up. It doesn't appeal to those who came up with him during the time of Born into the 90's, 12 Play, R. Kelly and R. Like many reviewers have stated, R. is 40 now. It's time to make music to reflect it. Double Up has some of the weakest lyrics I've ever heard from an R & B album. You're not 25 anymore, and neither are the majority of your fans. Don't just say you're the "king of R & B". Prove it to us.

A big disappointment .......2007-07-03

I was really looking forward to his album, but once I heard the album I was highly disappointed. The only songs that I really like are Freaky In Club and the Zoo, I like those songs mainly because if the beat. R.Kelly you are very talented, please make your music for the older crowd, because we were all clubbing when we were buying your albums in the 90's.

Where the hell is the King of RnB???.......2007-07-01

For the last 15 years I have been a die hard R. Kelly fan...I got a little shaky when the charges came up, But nevertheless I still rocked with him. NOW...I dont know. Its like I'm 24 and even I'm tired of the club songs. I want the R. Kelly that recorded Born in the 90's, 12play, R. Kelly, TP2, R. (2disc) and Chocolate Factory. TP3 and this double up, I can do without. As funny as "real talk" is, its nothing you can sing with...nothing you want to sing 10 years from now like you would "Slow Dance." This is disposable music thats he's putting out right now! COme on now, 40 yr olds in Doo rags in the club poppin bottles is wack!!! Kells its time to let it go and grow into the legend that you are destined to be...dont mess it up trying to conform to what everyone else is doing, you are much better than that. Tisk, Tisk...this is what Mid life crisis is about...

Rather than an ordinary film soundtrack, this might more accurately be considered an exceptional Loudon Wainwright album. A diehard Wainwright fan, director Judd Apatow explains in his liner notes that he asked the singer-songwriter to score Knocked Up, Apatow's first film since The 40-Year-Old Virgin, only to learn that Wainwright was about to embark on his next recording project with producer Joe Henry. The resulting album features material that Wainwright had written before the film score that the director wanted to use, other cuts that are instrumental snippets in the movie but are songs with lyrics on the album, and still others that take thematic inspiration from the film. While Wainwright so often writes lacerating and hilariously personal material, many of these songs are more like character studies, with a musical range that extends from the ragtime "So Much to Do" (one of two songs written with Henry) and the call-and-response of the chromosome ditty "X or Y" to the Brecht/Weill cabaret tinge of "Final Frontier" to the bluesy "Doin' the Math." Among the musicians providing stellar support are guitarists Richard Thompson and Greg Leisz and keyboardists Patrick Warren and Van Dyke Parks. --Don McLeese

Very, Very Beautiful Music.......2007-07-10

I saw "Knocked Up" twice at the theatre and was mezmerized by Loudon Wainwright III's beautiful voice and musical score. This soundtrack is lovely, especially "Grey in L.A.", "Daughter", "Lullaby", "Naomi" and "Strange Weirdos". Don't let the title fool you. This CD is beautiful music to listen to. I highly recommend this soundtrack and would give it more stars if they were allowed. **********

That director Apatow selected Wainwright to score his film, and that the latter happily accepted, reveals a lot about the cockeyed sense of humor that both men possess. This is a warm, albeit skewed, view of love and parenthood that will delight any longtime Wainwright fan and, for the uninitiated, will serve as a good introduction to his songwriting skills. One hopes it will also persuade fans of the film to look into his extensive back catalogue of witty and sometime mordantly hilarious music. Keep up the good work, Loudon!

This one sucks!.......2007-06-24

I have been a fan of Louden way before 'Dead Skunk' came out. I have seen in in concert too many times to list. I also have enjoyed everything and I mean everything that he has put out. This one to me is bad, it just did not click, the only track that was ok and I mean just ok was 'Daughter'. This is the first bad review I have evey given Louden and I hope the last one.

I thought the movie was great,so it is not that. Good Luck to the people that buy this one and I hope you enjoy the music I sure did not.

Music you can ignore!(?).......2007-06-21

To borrow a phrase from John Cusack's character from "High Fidelity" I sometimes want music I can ignore. This pretty much sums up all of Loudon's music for me. I can always have it playing in the background and tune in when I feel like it. It seeps into my head and pretty soon I realize I have been listening to some amazing songs. I discovered Loudon with "Last Man on Earth" and have been hooked since. I keep hoping others will catch on to his music and when I heard about this project I was nervous. Will he try to be too commercial? Will this become another one of those "Ally McBeal" moments? (You know what I mean...the whist full walk into the ending credits while a song plays and the characters take turns looking into the camera so we can all learn the episode's lessons.) But I should not have worried. Turns out he has been making music that could always be played during the ending credits but the difference is that his words will teach you what the actors cannot.
"You Can't Fail Me Now" may be just about the best song I have heard in some time. So honest it hurts. "Daughter" has been one my favorites for sometime. How does a man who write such amazing melodies toil in relative obscurity?
Others have written more poetically about the songs and the CD as a whole. All I can add it this...put on the CD, do some cleaning or have some tea. Maybe clean the garage or sit by a fire and let the music just play. Pretty soon you tune in and realize you were not ignoring this music because Loudon will not be ignored. He will find his way into your soul because he is sharing so much of his. As for this being a soundtrack...I think his music has always been a soundtrack. First for his life...then for ours. Get this CD, get hooked and don't ignore him any longer.

Surprisingly Satisfying Folk Pop.......2007-06-12

"Daughter," from the closing credits in "Knocked Up," is so good that iTunes won't sell it as a single off of this album (the rest of the album is available for purchase at .99 per track...but you won't want it without "Daughter," trust me!).

Although it's true that "Daughter" is worth the price of admission by itself, the rest of the album isn't a throwaway: Wainwright and producer Joe Henry have put together a fine album of light, breezy folk masquerading as the soundtrack to an equally dandy film. Filmgoers won't be familiar with Wainwright (and I'd only listened to his son, Rufus, before picking this disc up), but they won't be disappointed with this album. I don't think I'll be able to go into a coffee shop in the next couple of months and not hear this CD in the background. And that's a good thing.

I love listening to this CD while playing video games or driving in my car. The songs are a bit more complex than the first CD, and Amy has developed her range and her belt (chest) voice a bit more than the first CD, so this one has a slightly different feel to it. I do like the simplicity of the first CD though, and I think the songs on the first CD are more catchy and memorable... but if you love Evanesence, you gotta get this CD too.

I think my favorites are Lacrymosa (because I sang that song in highschool and her rock version is brilliant), Call Me When You're Sober, and Lithium.

Open Door - CD.......2007-07-03

When I first bought this item, I selected to have it delivered to my house in 2 days (for a little extra charge). It didn't arrive in time for me to give it to my sister on her birthday. It came 7 days LATE!! What's worse, they still charged me the extra fee even though it didn't show up the day they said it would. Poor service, poor delivery. Very disappointed.

I love this CD. In fact it was in my CD player for so long, I didn't even realize that Kelly Clarkson had a new single out. Great crunching guitars offset by Amy's beautiful vocals.

Evanescence has changed, and this album is as good as their first, if not better. Completely different, The Open Door is a fresh undertaking from a band we already knew was great. Now, Amy Lee's voice is back after a much-awaited 3+ years and it falls over you at times like a gentle black rain, or crashes into you like the jagged leading edge of an approaching storm. I don't like "female rockers" as a rule, but Amy Lee has what it takes to make my skin tingle - in a good way.

So many songs on this album, and every one is great and completely different. I love the piano melodies intertwined with the driving, heavy guitar chords. I have heard Evanescence compared to Linkin Park, and while that may be technically true, the similarity stops at the tempo of the music for me. Amy Lee and Evanescence evoke so much more emotion in me than LP, although I like them as well.

Amy Lee is obviously the center of the band now, as several others have already stated, but the rest of the band is still a force to be reckoned with. I do miss the "duets", however few they were on Fallen, but Evanescence has evolved into a much deeper band; much more emotional with Lee's vocals of course; and I can't wait for another album. Fallen has now made it back into my regular listening rounds because of The Open Door. I bought this album because of Call Me When You're Sober, but I was very satisfied that it was not the best song by far on here.

I'll leave the song-by-song reviews to those who do them so much better than I. I will say that there just isn't a bad song on here, or even one that I don't like as much as the others. I could listen to Amy Lee serenade me all day long. It makes me want to cry, to hold her, and then just listen and bask in the raw power of it. I'm a fan for life.

Keep up the good work guys!! All of you make it all worth while. I live for music and couldn't imagine a life without it. This world would be a much sorrier place indeed without great music.

After much success with their debut album, Evanescence returned with "The Open Door" amid skepticism that without founding member Ben Moody in the fray, the album could be a setup for disappointment among fans.

Nothing could be further from the truth, for "The Open Door" if anything, is more far reaching and versatile than the tight, no nonsense approach the debut album's overall production had surrounding it. With their sophomore effort, even Lee's poetic and powerful vocals seem to have found new boundaries to cross as instrumentally the album also finds new horizons to reach for. With progression like this, I can only imagine what the next studio release will be like.

Track 2 is "Call me when you're sober" and has an awesome, driving guitar piece at the beginning of it, and coupled with Lee's vocals seem to be a little more elongated and crooning at times which tells me right off the bat that the band seems to perhaps be breaking out of a shell of some sort. The backing vocals are done well also, giving the song a sweet combination of soothing vocals and driving guitars. Track four clocks in less than four minutes long but has a lot of staying power, as like the first album features some sweet piano parts that are backed by a haunting vocal effort by Lee. A Beautifully written song, "Lithium" is not one I will forget anytime soon. Track five is "Cloud Nine" and is crazy in the fact that at times, it sounds to me like an easy going, almost bluesy tune before implementing a ghostly, haunted house sound in the background. The band's ability to change so much in sound within the structure of their songs and still deliver a talented performance in both vocals and instruments makes them much more than just a band of "teen angst" popularity. Track eight has a slow, somewhat ballad feel to it while track nine (Only One) is a track that showcases pretty much Lee's beautiful voice and another nice piano opener before winding up to a grunge style guitar riff that helps finish out the song. 13 tracks in all, "The Open Door" is every bit a success for this band as their magnificent debut, and in some ways I must say I think I like it a little bit better. Strong Chorus, Melody, and varying changeups in Tempo and Rhythm are surrounded by a sometimes pensive, artful approach that overall makes "The Open Door" anything but a disappointment for this new fan.

Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

This was the first Josh Groban album that I bought. I heard his Live at the Greek album in a friend's vehicle and decided I needed some of his work. I have since bought all of his available albums. This is still probably my favorite. It is an excellent example of his talent and the music is beautiful! I definitely recommend it to any music fan.

The Daredevil soundtrack provided a nice boost for this previously unknown quartet from Little Rock, Arkansas. Evanescence's songs "My Immortal" and the imposing "Bring Me to Life" are clear standouts in the film, mainly because they work so well with the dramatic, eerie undertones of the storyline. They reappear here on the band's debut, alongside a selection of similarly brooding tracks that evoke pensive artists like Tori Amos and the Cranberries. Vocalist Amy Lee has the kind of voice that can cause weeks of insomnia, but on songs like "Tourniquet" and "Haunted" she belies the music's sinister mood with evenhanded spirituality, thoughtfully letting some light shine through the tempest. --Aidin Vaziri

This is one of the very best CDs ever made, and one of the ONLY ones I've ever found that I can listen to from beginning to end and never skip past a single song. I think there's maybe four or five others in the world that I can say that about, and I listen to almost all types of music, from Mozart to Enya to Tool to Billie Holiday to Simon and Garfunkel to Staind to... anyway, it's a masterpiece. Some music snobs like to turn up their noses at Evanescence and mock those who listen to them because they're generally thought of as "Teenage Goth", but I have a message for them: GET OVER YOURSELVES!! BY BEING NARROW MINDED YOU ARE ONLY DEPRIVING YOURSELVES OF SOME OF THE BEST, MOST HAUNTING MUSIC YOU COULD ASK FOR!! I listen to this CD ALOT and I never get tired of it. Amy Lee is amazing! TRY IT!!!

Light in the Darkness.......2007-07-03

Fans of bands like Nightwish, The Gathering, Lennon Murphy and Lacuna Coil are either rejoicing or cursing Evanescence. Their brand of atmospheric gothic rock / metal is quite comparable to all bands mentioned above yet they are the ones in the Billboard Top 10 Album chart.

"Bring Me To Life" is a stunning track on its own merit that could stand to lose the male pseudo rap-rock vocal yelling "Wake Me Up". (If you hear the demo version without the male vocal you will understand) I find it amusing that fans of bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit are buying this disc just on the basis of this track alone only to realize that the rest of the disc is moody, dark journey into the belly of various beasts. Nevertheless, Amy Lee has a haunting voice that layers beautifully over gothic rock/metal passages much like Tarja, Anneke, Christina, and Tori Amos. "Haunted" is a short, but remarkable track that allows Amy's vocals to breathe chilling words of despair. Just read the cold words to "Imaginary" and you wonder what exact demon tortures the writer's (Ben Moody) soul.

Overall, this disc is way too deep and thought provoking for its target audience. For those of us that have supported this style of music for years, please don't pass judgment against this disc until you have experienced the overall enchantment within its 11 tracks.

Amy Lee: The most underrated voice in music today.......2007-06-27

I remember when "Bring me to life" started playing regularly on a local rock station a few years ago. I thought it was a pretty cool song and liked the vocals of female singer Amy Lee, who seemed to have a wide range and yet still able to have somewhat of an overall mystique to her sound that I still have a hard time describing to this day. At that point a friend of mine loaned me the CD, but upon the first couple of listens I put it back without a second thought.

After selling 14 million copies worldwide and having a strong sophomore release with "The Open Door", I decided to give Evanescence another chance, returning to the debut album "Fallen". Sometimes it takes giving an album a second chance to make a first impression, and this time around I guess I was ready to embrace a band that was deemed as Goth Metal by the masses, but had a female vocalist that was able to help them rise above the all too familiar growl and dirge vocal efforts that usually fall into this category. Strong singles that stand out to me start out with Track 1 in "Going Under", which has a nice, simple guitar piece that has enough grind to stay down in the darker, more brooding sounds of this style of music. Track 6 is a tune called "Tourniquet" and has some eerie tones that help it start out before breaking into a clean, balanced attack of guitars and percussion. The overall structure of this album is great, and although I said there are several singles I like, I will just sum it up by saying there is something great about every song on this album.

What really is a selling point for me, however, is the lead singer Amy Lee. Amy's voice is poetic in deliverance of the songs and has a great overall emotional connection with the music, while at the same time her range allows her to add a lot of diversity to each and every song throughout the album. Overall you have a powerful set of music that rocks when it has to, and has some piano melody to add to the mix (Track 6 and 9 in particular) that I feel sets it apart from a lot of the genre's and classifications that people have been trying to put it in. If you are not much into newer "Nu-Metal" or what have you, but enjoy some of the progressive metal sounds and intricate approaches of such musicians, you just might find Evanescence to your liking. As stated before, it took me a few years to "come back" and discover them, but the wait was worth it and I look forward to any new releases this band has to offer.

Overdramatic Crap.......2007-06-24

This album is a bunch of teenage overdramatic crap. Amy Lee's vocals are too overdramatic, and most of the lyrics sound like what would come out of a teenagers jounral about how depressing things are. I can't belive some people call this metal or goth music, it is neither. This album is way too comericalized, the music is itself is nothing too write home about. Alot of this album sounds like it was thrown together in about 5 minutes, with not much thought behind it. If you want TRUE metal stick with old school metallica, megadeth,testament,pantera(r.i.p. Dimebag),slayer,and fear factory. Avoid this album if you are a TRUE metal fan, you will be dissapointed.

As wonderful as you'd expect.......2007-06-14

They were only together for one album and tour, but the Hard Again band was the most kickass assemblage of blues talent there has ever been. They simply never played anything, either live or in studio, that was not of extraordinarily high quality. This disc absolutely smokes, and it's a welcome treat that Cotton and Winter each get a couple turns on lead vocals. It's very encouraging that there's still this much great stuff left over after after the two disc edition of Muddy "Mississippi" Waters, because that means there's likely more on the way.

Bringin' It Back.......2007-06-14

Muddy Waters' work on Chess Records from the late 1940s to the early 1970s is truly amazing. He was the most powerful blues artist and one of the best songwriters. Many fans think he was in decline in the mid-1970s when "Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down" was recorded. This concert document should dispel those thoughts. It might have taken Muddy longer to build up a head of steam, but when he got rollin', he was as "mannish" as ever. With old pal James Cotton blowing away on harp and Johnny Winter (who ignited Muddy's revival by producing his later records on Blue Sky Records) as his co-stars on the 1977 tour, Muddy was pushed to the heights he regularly reached in his 1950s and 1960s heyday ("Pinetop" Perkins on piano, and Bob Margolin on guitar also shine). The live version of "Can't be Satisfied" - the second cut on the disc - is as strong as any live recording in his career. I saw this band at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. and the three stars were on fire and having a whale of a time. When I bought "Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down," I thought, "there is no way this recording will be as good as I remember the show." But not to worry, it's all here and hearing it again made me smile at the memories of Muddy, James, and Johnny pouring out electric blues. A rousing "Got My Mojo Working" (the encore) finishes things up nicely. Someone once said, "In Muddy Waters' hands 'the blues' is a misnomer."

Finger Eleven's career shifted suddenly and significantly when their 2003 emo-hit "One Thing" turned the band's career on its axis. At that point, they went from being known as 'the boys from Burlington who used to call themselves the Rainbow Butt Monkeys' to a group whose anthemic slow rock song went Platinum in Canada and Gold in America. So how does a band respond after its widespread fame is the result of just one song? In the case of Them Vs. You Vs. Me, Finger Eleven have consciously stayed away from anything remotely resembling their past and put the focus on the straight-ahead alt-rock formula that they've consistently excelled at. There are certain old-school rock influences that bleed clearly through their music, from Rush-isms in the form of frenetic time changes ("Sense of a Spark") to "Talking to the Walls" and "Lost My Way" which evoke Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. Frontman Scott Anderson's voice is impressive throughout, but when he sings ballads, especially "Window Song" and "Easy Life," something enables him to appeal to a whole different audience than traditional alt-rock fans. There is no 'one thing' on this disc that will allow them to reach the heights of their self-titled CD, just a consistency that will provide longtime fans reason to appreciate the band even more. --Denise Sheppard

notice how everyone who says this is my first time hearing F11 i love it and they give it 5 stars? yea..cuz its a good album..all you 1 star guys own greyest of blue skies and your wanting a repeat...well f11 dosent do that... thats like watching and loving super troupers then renting their 1st release called puddle cruisers and hating it because you wanted another super troupers out of it....but would you have liked the movie if youd never seen super troupers?..most likely....NEVER judge someone on their other works. and you won't ruin the music for yourself.... if them vs you vs me was released my ohh say...some band called cheetah lol and you heard paralyzer...youd prob like the album...

What a great new concept album!.......2007-07-08

I'm a new fan and picked this one up the day it came out because of Paralyzer. I listened for a couple weeks and liked it a lot, then I put it away so I didn't get burned out on it.

I listened again today driving from Philly to DC and really paid attention. Aside from the myriad classic rock influences that can be heard and the solid musicianship, this disc is quite the concept album. Best one I've heard in a long time and I'm very, very rarely impressed by new musical offerings. I understand that this may not be the same sound as their previous offerings but I really don't care. This is good music.

No more paralyzers?.......2007-07-08

I love Paralyzer.. it has a harder sound to it which I was hoping to hear on the rest of the album. Unfortunately, I only liked the first track and found the rest to be a bit of a disappointment. Seems like "Paralyzer" should have been done by Disturbed. The only reason I gave the album a 2 was because it has one song I can't get enough of. Otherwise, it's a zero. Generic and poor lyrics = radio friendly. Not what I'm looking for.

It's Awesome.......2007-06-02

I got into Finger Eleven for their track 'One Thing'. That was a really good song, excellently composed but it did not make a serious fan out of me. That is until the new album 'Them-Vs-You-Vs-Me'.

I find Soctt Andersons vocals consistent throughout the entire album. Yes it is more alternative rock but don't be put off by being classified as a label when it comes to what you listen to. This is a very enjoyable cd.
The tracks, Paraylzed, Falling On, and Taking To The Walls are outstanding in terms of more of the rocking type tracks.

However, this is only a treat before we get some real amazing vocals on some of the more acoustic type tracks.
Real bonus to the CD are the following:

* I'll Keep Your Memory Vague. 5/5
"This won't break your heart, But I just think it could, coz I haven't tried as hard as I should..to..to seperate you from everything I do...but I would never wanna come between us 2" - This entire line is the best vocal I've heard this year for an intro.

* Window Song 5/5
"All The Windows are playing their game...we won't see outisde again...til I ride all the fog away...I'm putting words in their place...but all of the fog is erased & I write all the words I never said"

* Talking To The Walls
-Excellent Intro & again great lyrics. i.e. "Look at the shape I'm in, talking to the walls again'

They have staying power, for the people that have mocked this album, it's been unfair, bands need to evolve.

I would definitely like to extend my gratitude of thanks to Finger Eleven, they put out an album I can really relate to.
