Product Description
Following the release of the independent Donkey Serenade and an apparent renewed interest in the band, Weddings Parties Anything (W.P.A.) signed to yet another label and released this CD. Initial pressings of the CD featured a different sleeve, and did not include the "Bonus" CD, Garage Sale, which had been available previously at their live performances. The album also represented somewhat of a new beginning for the band. With the same line-up from Donkey Serenade, the band has their trademark sound, mostly due to Michael Thomas's impassioned vocals, but there seemed to be a new energy in this release. In particular, Jen Anderson's violin playing seems more in the foreground, producing a very melancholy sound to the typically sad songs of regrets, lost loves, unrequited loves, and the struggles of being musicians. The sound on this CD leans more toward alternative country than folk, but it works

5 out of 5 stars The last hurrah.......2004-02-10

"Riveresque", the last album from Weddings Parties Anything, is probably their most complete work displaying a maturity, worldliness and compassion not evident in much modern music (the lead singer Mick Thomas has released a couple of cracking solo albums). Some of its pretty funny too (5 Shows a Day, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous). "Riveresque" is a letter of love to Walhalla, the Mallee, Devonport, Broome, Gippsland and all the place in between. Walkerville, For a Short Time and A Decent Cup of Coffee and Sound of A Train are amongst Mick Thomas's best lyrics, there's a real Carveresque edge to these tales of lost love and chances in regional Australia, and they're not afraid to laugh at themselves (Luckiest Man in the Country). The Afternoon Sun is an exquisite rendering/interpretation of a C.P. Cavafy poem - you don't need to know that to appreciate it but it is a pointer to one of Thomas's favourite authors, Lawrence Durrell. From the plaintive opening of "Don't Need Much" to the wailing guitair conclusion to "Walkerville", Riveresque is one of the finest Australian records of the last decade. Do yourself a favour.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas isn't the same anymore - how about a reunion.......2002-07-26

I first heard Weddo's when I was in college in the late 80's. I have listened religiously to them since. They were far and away the best band I have ever listened to or seen live.

The greatest hits double CD is brilliant. I listen to it all the time. You can not get tired of this music. It takes me back to Central Club, Melbourne everytime I listen. It's true, they were better live - get this CD of their last live show.

I find it hard to list my WPA favorites - but lets try - they are all on these 2 CD's. Industrial town, Step in Step Out, Sargeant Small, Grey Skies over Collingwood, Rosey and Grey, Decent Cup of Coffee, Sun in my Eyes..... I should just go ahead and list them all - you get the picture.
How else to convince you to buy this ? My WPA CD's are continually disappearing.
This is the perfect music for any occasion; BBQ in the back yard, dancing, quiet listening. This music is unique - I cant explain it. Just go and buy it.
Christmas just isn't the same anymore - how about a reunion Mick ?

5 out of 5 stars Best band Americans have never heard of.......2001-12-17

I must admit I took a chance on this CD as I sometimes do, and I was blown away by this band. It's a shame that they never "made it" to the states, because WPA are one of the best bands around(I should say were, as they are no longer together). Their music is tight, meshing guitar, fiddle, and accordian to make up a most unique sound. I have been slowly gathering all their CDs and I have not been dissapointed by any. I highly reccomend all of them.

4 out of 5 stars Testimony from a proud Melbournian.......2000-05-29

G'day to all you CD shoppers! After hearing the Weddos for the first real (or unreal) time in 1998, I was immediately hooked and hurried to buy tickets to their final Christmas shows, but missed out on the chance of a lifetime. Fortunately I have seen the lead singer, Mick Thomas since, playing solo at a few local pub venues. I have gradually accumulated most of their music and I have never looked back! On most days you will find me strumming the guitar to a few Weddos' classics and covers. This CD was recorded in Tasmania by the band, who decided to use the acoustics of an old-syle stone brick house and the sound is superb. Acording Mick, this was the inspiration for the opening track, "Houses". Sit down, turn on the CD player, picture yourself in front of a log fire (if you don't have one) and listen If you can't afford a return ticket to Melbourne, then the music of Weddings Parties Anything will take you there and drop you in a warm pub in the winter time, in a cafe or on the beach in summer, footy at the "G" (MCG) or even in a night club in Halifax, Nova Scotia (for all those Aussies)! If you like this CD, then you'll love hearing them in "They Were Better Live"! Then seek out "Roaring Days" for that real "Melbourne" folk rock sound. You too will find yourself addicted to the folk/garage/rock sound and think yourself a true Wed-Head! Chonk On!

5 out of 5 stars An American Review----These guys are good!.......1999-08-23

Weddings Parties Anything is a Melbourne, Australia band that I got "dragged" to see when I was in Sydney a few years back and since then I've probably become their biggest North American fan. These guys are to Australia what Jimmy Buffett is to Florida except they haven't been at it as long and they don't have any Cheeseburger in Paradise-like tunes that make you want to yak. Unfortunately I hear they split so all that's left is their previous stuff. Buy this album and when Trophy Night finds its way to Amazon, buy that too--that's their greatest hits. Or go to their website and buy it overseas, and while you're at it, pick up King Tide, Roaring Days, and Difficult Loves. The way they blend the accordion into a good upbeat tempo via acoustic and electric guitars makes for a great sound. Their accents are pretty cool too!!
