The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Contemporary Russian Orthodoxy.......2005-12-13

This album is for sophisticated listeners who already know their way around Russian music, and specifically around the Russian sacred choral tradition, at least more than just a little. (NOTE: By `sophisticated,' I do not mean to hint that the music on this album is obscure, dissonant, weird, inaccessible, etc. With the exception of Nos. 1 - 4 and 8 - 11, however, these selections are just lesser known - and undeservedly so.) This recording serves as fitting evidence that the Russian Orthodox choral tradition did NOT die when the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917. To the contrary, this tradition was maintained and revived by many of the composers represented on this album. The album's producers thoughtfully begin with some better known selections: a traditional chant, Tchaikovsky, Arkhangel'sky, Chesnokov and Ippolitov-Ivanov. But even in the case of Chesnokov - who makes a fitting bridge between the `choked off' tradition of the Soviet era and the present - the selections include a triptych of para-liturgical choral essays. (His `Angel Cried,' selection No. 10 on this album, is worth the purchase price alone. If you've never heard this work before, prepare to be transfigured!) Recording No. 11, the best known liturgical composition of Ippolitov-Ivanov, represents this choir's final genuflection to the `traditional' Russian sacred choral tradition, and then we're off! Agafonnikov, Lebedev and Kikta are all living composers who continue to make contributions to this genre. The late Alfred Schnittke, better known for his symphonic, operatic and other modern classical (secular) achievements, is also represented here - given possibly more than his fair share on this CD because of name recognition. If anyone who should be here is missing, that would be Georgiy Sviridov, who wrote a number of stunning para-liturgical pieces in the Russian Orthodox style; but Sviridov's choral work is well-represented elsewhere in the Russian Orthodox (and related) discography. I could raise other quibbles, but that would be unfair. Finally, the performers are equal to the music - suffice it to say that this is one of the finest professional choirs in today's Russia. If the Russian Orthodox liturgical tradition speaks to you, and if you've already become acquainted with the big names (Bortnyansky, Tchaikovsky, Rakhmaninov, etc.) then this recording is definitely for you.

This two cd offering has almost all my favorites.the classics, not the Rudolph ones. Can't recommend enough.Listen and read Dickens...That's enough Christmas for anyone.

Title makes a big claim, but it absolutely delivers..........2006-12-02

This album provides 2.5 hours of excellent carols, from excellent choirs and soloists, and with great sound. I was worried that a compilation this large, and with such an extravagent title, would be B-side offerings, but that's not the case at all.

This isn't an album if you are looking for something "fresh and new." The arrangements are traditional, and even newer carols are done in a fairly conservative style. But that said, some of the pieces provide the best orchestration and voice arrangement I have ever heard. This is like the pinnacle of the classic English Christmas carol; clean, precise, glorious and celebratory.

Its time to be seasonal.......2005-12-16

This album contains traditional carols performed in a traditional way at the best quality. It is an excellent album to ensure the spirit of christmas is present and to bring the true meaning of christmas back. The double CD selection has all the golden favourites as well as not so wellknown carols to complete a very good christmas album. Merry Christmas to you all!

Why label it? It's just plain good music.......2002-02-17

Although this album definitely sits comfortably within the country-rock hybrid world detailed in No Depression magazine, why split hairs on labeling? Is it "roots rock", "americana", "rockabilly", "country rock", "rock country", or "alt-country"? Who cares? What it IS, is just plain good American songwriting and production, with a solid list of songs and a fresh spin on what is normally heard on the radio. I first heard them perform personally, while in their home town of Memphis, TN, and have been a fan ever since. Their two main songwriters, Mark McKinney and Andy Grooms, seem to give the band a fire and ice combination similar to Uncle Tupelo (whose respective leaders are now found in Wilco and Sun Volt, for those who do not know). McKinney seems to be the glue of the band, offering solid songwriting, a pleasing voice, and classy, tasty guitar work that sounds smooth enough to be Nashville studio musicianship. Grooms, on the other hand, has a definite edge with a more in-your-face style, and a penchant for eccentric, amusing, and thought provoking lyrics not found on any mainstream music played today. They are backed by a solid rhythm section with Kevin Cubbins trading lead and rhythm guitar with McKinney and Mark Stuart holding down the bass groove. However, the drumming by Meyer Horn is in my mind what really sets this album apart from its contemporaries, adding a definite jazz/swing quality that enhances the whole package and elevates it almost into its own class. Whether you are a fan of rock, country, folk, alternative, crossover, or just music in general, you owe it to yourself to give these guys a listen. Odds are you'll be hooked.

I am certainly biased because I have been a fan of the Pawtuckets since before they ever released a CD. I managed a bar in Memphis and had their first CD, "Cloud 9 Ranch", on our jukebox. Rest of Our Days displays a much more honed Pawtuckets. I was not disappointed in any of the songs, but Set Up and Mississippi Parking Lot are particularly outstanding. Many compare the Pawtuckets to Uncle Tupelo and this is certainly fair, but their is more of a variety to their sound, and in many songs, a harder edge. Since I have moved away from Memphis, one of many things I miss about the River City is the chance to see the Pawtuckets live. I wholeheartedly recommend not only this CD, but their other two efforts: Cloud 9 Ranch and Dogsbody Factotum. If your interests range from the Dixie Chicks to the Allman Brothers, I guarantee you will not be disappointed in the purchase of any of the Pawtuckets CDs!

No Depression lovers, get this CD!.......2000-11-04

Having lived in the great musical city of Memphis, amidst the horns and blues, it was surprising to find a band that would have otherwise seemed more at home in neighboring Nashville. With a sound very much reminiscent of a matured Uncle Tupelo (with the Farrar-like voice to match), these guys put out song after song of some of the finest country/southern rock around. They feel equally at home plugging in and rocking out, and sitting on the back porch singing about life in the south. Everyone I have let hear this album has loved it. One of the best "Americana" albums you've never heard of.

Another great Memphis band........1999-12-07

First of all, this album should not be listed in the Country section. Secondly, this album should be listed when speaking of the best roots rock albums released in the last few years. Since there are no songs to listen to yet, my best discription of this band is a mix of Blue Mountain, Anodyne era Uncle Tupelo, and a touch of Allman Brothers (with Warren Haynes). The songwriting is very strong, unlike many of the new "americana" bands coming out these days. I can not urge you strongly enough to give this album a listen- you will not be disapointed.
