Its muscular aura of international intrigue informed by smart characters, sharp writing, and a sleek cinematic sense, the episodes of the hit Alias often seem more like a chapters of a successful movie spy franchise than mere network television series. Key to achieving that masterful illusion is young composer Michael Giacchino, whose soundtracks range across a dizzying range of musical styles and dramatic undercurrents. This anthology of cues from the show's first season incorporates shrewd, techno-savvy club beats, sweeping orchestral sequences of pounding action, brooding suspense worthy of Bond, and inventive indigenous music of indeterminate nationality. Firmly grounded in rich Hollywood traditions, yet hip enough to keep an ear cocked to pulsing, contemporary styles, Giacchino's TV scores often outshine those of the pricier, big budget Hollywood boilerplate he's competing with. --Jerry McCulley

question.......2006-04-25
ok, as most reviews, said, it is amazing and fits the show perfectly!
but...
does anyone know which episodes/scenes go with each song?
i've tried to watch and listen for them, but i get too into it!
Hear what u see.......2005-08-12
while listenin to this album in every track i feel like i can feel the energy and danger
Perfect soundtrack to a nearly perfect TV show.......2005-03-17
If Henry Mancini and Ferry Corsten collaborated on a TV soundtrack for a spy drama set in the 21st Century, the results couldn't be any better than Michael Giacchino's work on this CD. Giacchino can compose for an orchestra like the best of them, but he's also savvy enough to add a contemporary edge with multiple nods to electronica. Synth pads and drum loops are phased through various low-pass and comb filters on several selections here, resulting in a delicious, chewy-sounding percussive effect. Other reviewers have commented on this being a great exercise CD; I agree and would also add that this is a great CD for driving or browsing through glossy photo magazines.
My favorite pieces on the CD are "SD-6 Dance Party," "Red Hair is Better," and "Spanish Heist." I've no idea who the guitarist is on the latter two cuts, but he's quite good!
I recommend this first and foremost to anyone who fears that soundtracks are a dead medium; Giacchino's a challenging composer and takes some real risks. Alias fans will snatch this up (although it doesn't include any soundbites from the TV series), as will anyone willing to play both techno and retro lounge on their CD players. Completists may not be happy with this CD as none of the popular music heard in the show is reproduced here, nor is the torch song Jennifer Garner sang in one episode. But that's what future installments of Alias soundtrack CDs are for!
Best TV Soundtrack.......2005-01-09
This is well worth your money for any Alias fan, and it's better than most movie scores.
The Best soundtrack EVER from a TV series!.......2004-08-23
I think the title says it all, but it's true. I bought this CD knowing and loving the show and realizing just what the music adds to all of the highly enjoyable adrenaline rush scenes. This CD does not disappoint. I now exercise/kick box to it and if your pumped up by just watching the series, you'll really enjoy playing this CD in your car while driving....just try not to get a speeding ticket because the impulse to floor it will definately be there!!

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27
This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.
Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04
Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.
Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.
Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28
There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)
Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04
As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.
One Night Only .......2006-07-19
I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
In case you haven't noticed, the glorious voice of Odetta still rings true at the turn of the century. Following her acclaimed 1999 comeback Blues Everywhere I Go, the remarkable folk-revival veteran offers this engaging and inspired homage to Leadbelly, who passed away just as Odetta was beginning her own storied career. Clearly, Odetta admires the diversity of Huddie Ledbetter's repertoire, as she herself has made her living interpreting everything from folk ballads and 12-bar blues standards to protest songs, work songs, children's songs, and gospel. What makes this project so successful are the creative and wholly original arrangements she gives these tunes. "Goodnight Irene" and "Rock Island" are reinvented as funky piano-driven slices of New Orleans blues-boogie, with Odetta's languid phrasing perfectly contrasting the underlying rhythms, while "In the Pines" is reborn in a gospel vein with Henry Butler on piano. Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (on violin) and Kim Wilson (on harp) have guest spots, but Odetta commands the show throughout, understanding and inhabiting these songs as only she can, and clearly conveying their pain, bitterness, and world-weariness. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Odetta: An American Treasure.......2004-06-07
Odetta has created a fantastic album of songs by the famous Leadbelly. Pete Seeger is quoted on the back stating that he first heard Odetta sing a song by C.W. Leadbetter and he has waited 50 years for her to do an album of his songs. He is thrilled with this album and so am I. Odetta has improved with age. Her voice is brilliant in delivering her unique renditions of these songs. She has lost none of her vocal strength; on the contrary, I prefer her recent works over her Vanguard albums. She has a back-up band and like her previous release on MC Records, "Blues Everywhere I Go", there is a feeling of intimacy as if one is there in person hearing this great artist. I recommend this album without a bit of hesitation. I have asked independently run CD shops to carry this album and "Blues Everywhere I Go". Odetta is truly an American Treasure and I hope there will be more albums of this caliber from her. She is better than she has ever been and that is quite a feat for an artist who is, and always has been, brilliant. This is an album to really sit and listen to and it leaves the listener wanting more. "Looking For A Home" is a true work of art due to the genius of Odetta. This is a must have for anyone who loves folk/blues music. Thank You, Thank You, Odetta!!!
Odetta's Best Work Ever.......2003-07-22
Her blues album in 99 was a good comeback and is a fine CD; you can play it while you do other things, or you can sit down and enter into it with her. But if you put this CD on, forget about anything else. It will knock your breath out, knock you to your knees, whap you upside the head, make you laugh, make you cry, and demand 100% of your attention. Most singers quit before they reach 73. Odetta has just reached the height of her power. When she was in her forties and fifties, she was merely the strongest voice in the world; now she has achieved what the Japanese call YUGEN: maturity, the full flower perfected, the absolute mastery of one who has carried greatness in her bones and has practiced her art for about fifty years. She wails, moans, laughs, rocks, and quavers. She's sexy and compelling. Her timing is genius. Her pauses are rapt, wrenching. And her passion is infectious. "In the Pines" is so far down, it makes all our lives feel up; when she confides, "I love Irene, God knows I do," it's like a sacred trust. And when she belts out the boll weevil song, you can't help laughing out loud. If you only buy one Odetta CD in your life, buy this one. If you're an Odetta fan, you probably already did, but if you didn't, get ready. Fasten your seatbelts. She enters a whole new dimension on this CD, and she'll take you with her, if you have the soul for it.
Amazing CD!.......2001-10-16
Odetta has been known as the "Female Leadbelly" for her frequent interpretations of his songs. This CD finds her doing a collection of Leadbelly's songs that come straight out of her heart. The performances are emotional and evocative. The band is excellent and plays rich, swaying grooves to back up Odetta's signature vocal style. If you are a fan of the blues, the CD is a MUST HAVE for your collection.

From Broadway to Hollywood........2007-02-12
Tibbett had the talent and the way to express it. Would that I had been around to have enjoyed it in person. Who is out there today????????
One of the greatest singing artists of all time !.......2006-01-29
The baritone Lawrence Tibbett was one of the first American artists (with Rosa Ponselle) to gain international fame and acknowledgement in opera. This disc documents his great artistry very well, although it does lack represantation of his great operatic roles.
Tibbett gives every song and aria his whole heart and mind. He may not always sing perfect techniquely, but the truthfulness and drama Tibbett brings to being is superb and has in my opinion never quite been equaled.
This record encompasses all Porgy and Bess recordings he made as well as some very impressive portrayals of ballads and songs. I would recomend this disc not only to the collector but to all who can tolerate a bit of surface noise inorder to hear one of the greatest singers of all time :

Not to be missed.......2007-06-24
I never tire of listening to this CD. I saw the show in Atlanta several years ago and then again in Nashville--featuring Mary Murfitt herself--and think it is wonderful. I'm always surprised at how such a hilarious/silly premise can set the stage for a moving exploration of friendship, relationships between parents and children, and the joy that comes in facing and conquering our fears. I remember sitting at the side of the theater in Nashville and watching the audience, which previously had been rolling with laughter, be spellbound when the cast began "Songs My Mama Sang" with that gentle mandolin strumming in the background. It was magic--and this "little" show with great writing and thoughtful performances made it happen. I only wish it were performed more often, but then it takes a really talented cast to make it work. There will always be the CD, though.
Excellent, fun music.......2000-05-03
This is a strong woman's musical with great music that doesn't get tiring to listen to. I'd recommend it for anyone wanting to perform a great musical for theatre.

Lucifer Employed.......2007-01-05
Lucifer Employed is one of my favorite songs of all time. I've been looking for these guys for a long time. They used to be called Hyphen and I understand that they now have a few different members. However, the singer, Mike Hunter has remained. As such the grouped has retained a great song writer.
Definately worth the purchase as you'll be one of the only people you know who are in on the great secret of Mike's writing.

Best Record Ever.......2004-10-04
This record kills! I play it 20 times a day it just keeps getting better. This band is going to be HUGE soon...
Kite-Eating ME!!!.......2004-05-21
This band THINKS. They put thought into the songs, not just what sounds rad, but, they are like artists creating cool sounds on record. It's really cool. I like this record a lot.
ALL SWEDISH, No FINISH is my favorite song, it grabs me and makes me go crazy every time. I'm glad I got this one.
Another amazing addition to indie.......2004-05-09
Wow. I can't believe how good these guys are. I first found them when i was browsing purevolume.com and i was immediatly hooked. They're a perfect blend of indie/emo/ and post hardcore. They reminded me of Sparta a little and i love sparta so i naturally liked these guys. The lyrics are astounding and the music is anthemic, catchy, and creative. These guys truly understand music and make it happen to the fullest extent. A must buy!
Awesome!.......2004-03-24
A buddy of mine got a copy of this and I borrowed it and have NOT given it back. This CD is awesome, not one song is a skipper. It reminds me of the Dischord sound, bands like Jawbox or Fugazi even, but with more of a Drive like Jehu tinge to it,
without all the screaming. Fave tracks for me are "Width of a straw" and "Retrograde". I like the singer's voice a lot and I also like how the songs are very Bass-driven, as opposed to guitar-driven. I hope these guys come to New York soon, I'm hurtin to see a good band like this Live!! I'm sold.

Item not received........2006-01-15
I have not received this item yet. It is on back order. I had to rate it so put 3 stars. However sicne it hasn't been received I can't really rate it. You ought to take situations like this into consideration if you're going to do this sort of thing.
A Nice Assortment.......2001-03-13
The CD contains a nice selection of songs from composers who we may not hear that much of. I bought this CD for Copland's Dirge in Woods and it was very nice. But I found some other nice treasures on this CD too. Four vocalists, two males and two females, take on this sometimes very challenging music. The music for the most part is not soft and languid both rather has some what we would think of as mid 20th century types of chords. Unless you're into that kinda of thing, you may not want to get this CD. These aren't master works, but just nice little songs a composer might of written while taking a break between writing operas or symphonies.
Important American art songs performed by superb recitalists.......2000-05-30
This CD, a digital remastering of a recording originally released in 1962, is an extraordinary value for anyone interested in American art song, or simply in fine singing. I bought it because I wanted to hear Eleanor Steber's performance of Griffes's "Waikiki", which did not disappoint. But there are many other wonderful songs, all presented with great artistry. They range from the demanding complexity of Barber's "Nuvoletta" and Ives's "General William Booth Enters into Heaven" to the lyricism of the Ernst Bacon songs to texts by Emily Dickinson. The final song on the CD, John McCollum's performance of Henry Cowell's "The Donkey", is especially memorable; I recommend this version over the one on the Albany label's "Songs of Henry Cowell" CD (which I bought because my interest in Cowell's songs was raised by hearing "The Donkey").
