Critics have always been singularly unkind to Jimmy Buffett. Or at least they have since the singer became immune to their jabs, commanding a nation of Parrotheads who sell out his shows, snap up his records and books, and eat and drink in his nightclubs in Key West and New Orleans. By now, you've made up your mind as well: To paraphrase Buffett himself from his song "Volcano," you either lava him now, or you lava him not. Songs You Know by Heart is a friendly little best-of collection that features concert perennials such as "Margaritaville," "Fins," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," and the immutable "Why Don't We Get Drunk." If by some chance you've not yet been introduced to Buffett's music, this album is the best way to say hello. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
If you only could have one Jimmy Buffet CD this is it!.......2007-06-11
All the best songs, a must have if you don't have any Jimmy yet. And a great addition to your existing Jimmy collection, and a great spare with all the great songs for the car CD, and what would Jimmy do? You guessed it! Go for it, you will not be disappointed because there is no bad Jimmy Buffet songs.
This is the one that hooks you.......2007-03-24
I've been listening to Jimmy for quite a few years. A friend recommended I get this album, and after that, I had to have everything else. If you've read my reviews, you know I've been rough on Jimmy's incessant string of repetitive live albums. This is the good stuff- All the songs are pulled from Jimmy's (non-Barnaby) albums up to but not including Coconut Telegraph. It skips the album Havana Daydreamin' entirely. I agree with other reviewers that the song selection leaves out a plethora of great Buffett tunes, but you'll find them eventually. This is a sampling of the artist in his prime, and if you like it, it's safe to say you'll enjoy the larger body of his work. If you don't like it, none of his other work is going to do it for you. I always thought Jimmy would come through with a greatest hits vol.2, or at least a double cd encompassing his larger body of work. That's what "Meet Me in Margaritaville" was supposed to be, but that collection just isn't coherent and definitive as Songs You Know By Heart. After becoming a hard-core fan, I have to say that this collection is really going to be the pinnacle of his compilation albums. So, if you're interested in trying out the works of Jimmy Buffett, start here. I'll bet you won't be disappointed. This stuff is solid gold. Thank you for reading my review!(note to Jimmy- why not consider putting the title track to "havana daydreamin'" on this as a bonus track for future pressings of the cd? It's a heck of a song, and it's from the era. It would fit right in.)
Parrotheads Unite!.......2007-01-13
Truly songs we all know by heart. Great music - hard to pick a song that doesn't go well with a Corona or Margarita, and hard to pick a song since that he's done that would push one of these off the CD. The song vividly captures the spirit of Margaritaville - we are turning into the people our parents warned us about, or so we would like to believe.
Perfect recipe for summer.......2006-10-07
Step one: buy this cd
Step two: buy new blender
Step three: buy lots of rum and fruit mixes
Step four: mix the rum and fruit
Step five: pour the mixture into a glass
Step six: put on the cd
Step seven: repeat steps three through six as often as needed
If you don't drink alcohol then you'll still enjoy this greatest hits collection. All the early hits are here and it's really all you need to know about the guy. But there is a lot more good stuff out there. Make sure you give it all a listen.
Not the best collection........2005-12-13
When I started listening to this CD, I was surprised that I found it devoid of the energy I associate with Jimmy Buffett. His newer material (both studio-recorded and live albums) have an enegry that is lacking in this older collection.
If you enjoy a more mellow JB form 20 years ago, or if you just like him for his radio hits, this is the album for you.
But if you're into the hard-core, serious partying, spontaneous, energetic JB, if you call yourself a Parrothead, skip this album.
I recommend _any_ of his live albums or "Meet Me in Margaritaville" instead of this one. You'll be getting more music for your money, anyway.

Simply Awesome!.......2007-05-25
"The Voice" is simply at his best on this CD. You'll find some lesser known hits here like "At Love Last Love" that will become your favorites. I highly recommend this CD for anyone who appreciates a time when singers could sing and songs had melodies.
From someone curious about Sinatra, not a die hard fan: it's OK.......2007-05-16
I have this artists in many infomercials, so I bought this CD to find more about him. Verdict: he sings well, but the songs are not of my taste. It's OK.
Time after time, I come back to you, .......2007-05-04
Sinatra. I need to ask you for forgivness. I used to think you and your kind of music are so outdated, dead and buried. Ever since I got into Buble's standards album, a whole new world was opened to me. Amazing, how the mind and heart work. I feel like I had been deaf to this music all those years.
This is a beautiful album, a feast for your ear, heart and soul. Don't miss this gem.
Great Sinatra Sound.......2007-04-12
If I were to give someone a Sinatra CD as A gift.....This is the one
I would choose....Magical sounds as only "The Chairman Of The Board"
can deliver. Music from his Capital record years.....When a revival
in Frank Sinatra's career took place. Not a disappointing track on
this CD....!!!

How did you know Shaina?.......2007-05-12
I was injured a year ago and have had two surgeries and months of physical therapy. As well as physical healing, I have been working on spiritual enlightenment. This CD spoke to me immediately and it was as though I knew the words before she even spoke them. I use the music as an affirmation of who I am, where I have been, and where I am going. One of her lovely songs simply states " How can anyone ever tell you you were anything less than beautiful?" What a beautiful affirmation of your value and worth as a precious child of our Creator. Awesome!
Song For the Inner Child.......2007-04-02
If your self-image has taken a hit lately or if your life has been full of stress lately, this album of beautiful, soothing uplifting music was meant for you. It will refresh you and validate you.
Comforting, Healing.......2007-03-09
I first heard the first song on this CD in a psychology class. A number of us sat there and wept.
I use this CD for myself and with clients in the healing work I do. I find it comforting in hard times, the things my Inner Child needed to hear when she was young, but didn't.
I am grateful this CD exists.
Wonderfully healing message.......2007-01-10
This beautiful CD is ideal both for children and adults who will benefit from its soothing message of their specialness. I especially recommend it for those who have experienced a difficult or painful childhood and are in need of healing. Let Shaina Noll's lovely voice and the beautiful lyrics of these songs sink into your psyche. She sings a message we all need to hear and embrace.
Affirmations for the soul.......2006-11-12
The words to these songs could be imagined as coming from a precious parent, from a trusted friend who has boundaries, or from ones Higher Power. The mellow music and the affirming words reached my soul.

The incomparable Maria Muldaur has always traversed a wide expanse of American music--in 2003, she recorded A Woman Alone with the Blues, a tribute to jazz icon Peggy Lee--and so perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise that she has now applied her interpretive gifts to the love songs of Bob Dylan. Choosing from among his classics ("I'll Be Your Baby Tonight") and lesser-known works ("Golden Loom"), Muldaur bravely recasts several songs in disparate grooves (reggae, Cajun, swing), and even allows keyboardist David Torkanowsky to sneak a few bars of the jazz standard "Ain't Misbehavin'" into the end of "Moonlight." As expected, Muldaur is most at home with lazy, country-blues treatments ("Buckets of Rain"). But she can also effectively pull off the intense drama of total sublimation, especially on "Wedding Song" and "Make You Feel My Love," which she renders so tenderly as to elicit a tear. The title track finds her trying to talk herself out of an unsuitable lover, yet one suspects she won't be able to outsmart her heart. On both "Lay Baby Lay" (the gender-switching version of "Lay Lady Lay") and "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go," she eschews Dylan's urgent and poignant sexuality for sensuality, making both songs a study in how the sexes approach the chemistry of love. --Alanna Nash
Album Description
Â"I saw Maria in the great Martin Scorsese documentary about Bob Dylan, No Direction Home,Â" says Elaine Martone, production supervisor for the project. Â"She had recalled many great stories and anecdotes about the early days, and there was some great footage of her performing in the Village in the early Â`60s with the Kweskin Jug Band. I was struck by the fact that sheÂ'd had a direct association with Dylan during his formative years, which I knew because she and I had spoken about from previous conversations. When Bob [Woods, executive producer] approached her about doing a recording of Dylan songs, she narrowed the focus and suggested an album of DylanÂ's love songs. We thought that was an even better idea, and the result is a stirring, sensual album.Â"
Blues and folk chanteuse Maria Muldaur, a contemporary of Bob Dylan during his Greenwich Village heyday of the early Â`60s, brings it all back home by delving into the various ballads and love songs in DylanÂ's rich catalog and interpreting them in her own trademark style. Among the eleven tracks are Â"Buckets in the RainÂ" and Â"Meet Me in the Moonlight Tonight.Â"
Customer Reviews:
very unique.......2007-07-05
What a great combination. If you like Maria Muldaur and you like Bob Dylan, especially his love songs, this is the CD for you! I play if over and over.
Music that appeals to people across generations!.......2007-06-27
I was on vacation when I walked into a small local bookstore and this CD was playing. I KNEW I knew the singer, but couldn't put my finger on the name. I finally asked and found out it was Maria Muldaur. I listened to her alot in college and have listened periodically to her music.
The nice thing about this CD is that it appeals to everyone on this vacation - from the 16 month old to the 78 year old. It has a bluesy sound and very relaxing. Perfect for the beach or after a day at work.
SINGING THE BLUES-ME.......2007-06-19
I have highly praised Maria Muldaur's recent trilogy of covers of classic women blues singers. (see all my reviews) I stated in those reviews that she had paid (and more than paid) her dues to be in the company of Memphis Minnie, Bessie Smith and Sippy Wallace. I am also a devoted Bob Dylan fan from way back. Nevertheless I was disappointed in this album. Partly I think that it was overproduced. But I also believe part of the problem is that while Dylan has done many love songs in different formats and in different moods from rage to sentiment I do not believe that overall this is his strongest kind of song. That seems to be reflected here. Take one example- Buckets of Rain- so-so for Maria. The definitive cover for me is Dave Van Ronk's bitter sweet version. If you compare the two covers you will see what I mean. But getting back to the meat of my conflict if you listen to Maria's cover of Sippy Wallace's-Don't Advertise Your Man you then know what blues heaven is. There she is right at home.
Heart of Mine: Love Songs of Bob Dylan - Maria Muldaur.......2007-06-08
Not the gutsy sound that I had expected from Muldaur. Pretty tame.
May I have some more please?.......2007-06-04
For years I have said that the best way to listen to a Bob Dylan song is to find the Joan Baez version. Well Muldaur 's takes are every bit as good and totally different. Baez's crystal clear soprano invites you to think about the words and the lyrics. Muldaur's low, smoky growl grabs you by the emotions and makes you feel them.

Diana Krall, here with her first GRP album, expands on the delights that populated her 1992 debut, Stepping Out. Again, her talents are simply remarkable: she sings with feeling, emotion, and nuance--she invests a lyric with believability--and plays marvelous piano, no matter the tempo. The program pleases on so many levels: slip the disc into the player, hit any track at random, and you'll be moved. Take the oh-so-slow, heartfelt groover "Squeeze Me," on which her alto is both breathy and demonstrative and her accompaniments are sly, and which features a winsome solo by bass maestro Ray Brown. On another gut-wrenching crawler, "All Night Long," Krall tears you up with her emotive, intimate vocal, interspersing her singing with telling, shimmering piano notes, then delivering a solo full of wry confidences. The succulent title track is a deliciously slow bossa where Krall's vocal is partly whispered, as if sung in your ear. More upbeat is the finger-popping "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby," where the artist sings with grit and life then solos with an economical drive. Tenor saxophone giant Stanley Turrentine adds a trademark saucy improvisation. "I Love Being Here with You" is a romping shuffle where Krall's voice hits some notes on the head and stretches others like pulled taffy. "Broadway" is another vibrant outing that includes a singing, fat-noted solo from bassist Christian McBride and Lewis Nash's deft brush work. Aces all around. --Zan Stewart
Customer Reviews:
Cocktail pianist at best and no jazz vocalist.......2007-04-01
Because Ms Krall is accompanied by some outstanding musicians of the jazz genre I presume she is concerned to be recognized as a jazz singer and a jazz pianist. If this is so then I have to say her nasal twang, indifferent rhythmic sense, and poor understanding of the lyric makes her an indifferent jazz interpreter of the great american song book. To take "I've Got the World On A String" as an example, it may as well be sung by a computer. Embarrassing. As for her piano playing then she is an accomplished cocktail pianist but to place her in the jazz pantheon would be a considerable leap of pure faith.
On the slower tunes, she is more successful in a cutesy way as on "Squeeze Me". But I would think she must be the most overrated "jazz" artist of the last decade.
She's the best!.......2007-01-09
Diana Krall is the best. There has never been a sexier, sultrier voice. This CD does not disappoint. She continues to get better and better. I'd have given it 5 stars, but Live in Paris is her all time best.
WOW !!!! Diana Krall made me do something unusual !!!.......2003-12-07
What can I say? Diana is making me buy an entire album and this is the first time that I am buying albums as Christmas gifts. I am giving her album and Micheal Duble's self titled album to my closest friends. I send gifts that are high quality and thoughful gifts that I would personally enjoy (Just in case they are sent back). Both albums are kick ***, making this a banner year. All this and QE on Bravo TV! Color me happy!
A real jazz album.......2003-08-24
Whatever you may think of Diana's more recent crossover music (which I think is brilliant), this early album demonstrates clearly that her music is rooted in jazz. There is no crossover here - it's pure jazz. Diana sings and plays piano, backed by a small but select band comprising a bass player (sometimes Ray Brown, sometimes Christian McBride), a drummer (Lewis Nash) and a ten saxophonist (Stanley Turrentine).
Like so many of Diana's albums, this one relies heavily on songs from the first half of the twentieth century, beginning with Louis Jordan's classic Is you or is you ain't my baby. Other classic songs featured here include Squeeze me (Duke Ellington) and two songs associated with Peggy Lee (I love being here with you, The folks who live on the hill). The only original is the closing bluesy instrumental, CRS craft.
This is a fine album that will particularly appeal to jazz aficionados. It may even expand the market as fans of Diana's later music learn to appreciate jazz. But some of those fans may not like this - if in doubt, listen to some of it before buying.
Stanley and Diana.......2003-04-18
Oddly, little mention in the customer reviews of Stanley Turrentine's presence on the recording. It's what makes this album different from --and hotter than --any other of Ms. Krall's fabulous work. Example: No doubt about it --Diana and the band supremely cook on the song "I Love Being Here with You" from her latest Paris live recordings. But on this version, Turrentine's tenor sax steers the tune up the onramp and into overdrive. He's jazzy enough to be interesting but stays sane and faithful to the melody. Which matches Diana's musical style, I think. But whether it's Stanley Turrentine, Ray Brown, Christian McBride, Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton, etc., it's testament to Ms. Krall's ability to attract and lead such superb associates. And at such a tender age, though she was no overnight sensation at this point, having played professionally since her teens.
Still, one of my favorites cuts on the CD is saxless: the dreamy "All Night Long." Diana's lilting piano solo and sultriness interpret the plaintive mood of the piece perfectly.
Her three subsequent recordings are maybe a little more softened and refined. That's not at all a bad thing, but I tend to listen more to this CD, its predecessor, "Stepping Out" or the two recent killers "The Look of Love" and "Live in Paris." "Only Trust Your Heart," among all her recordings, is Diana at her most muscular, both vocally and instrumentally. Even on the slower pieces she reaches decibel levels more likely to be heard only in her concerts. Maybe it's Turrentine's influence. In any case, it's just nice to hear Diana prove that she can belt `em out.

It's got to be a bit strange for Vonda Shepard. This is her album--she sings and writes the songs--and yet she takes second billing to the TV show that features her as the singer in the unnamed bar. Granted, Shepard had released many solo albums on her own before Ally made her a known commodity, and the songs here are geared to mirror Ms. McBeal's many moods. Here, Shepard is helped out by an impressive cast. Her backing band includes drummer Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello), bassist Davey Faragher (Cracker), and guitarist Val McCallum (Peter Gabriel), and her guest vocalists include the Reverend Al Green for a stunning duet on Lulu's To Sir, with Love," and the Indigo Girls' Emily Saliers on "Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow." Rounding out the anthemic originals are covers of Don McLean's "Vincent," Peter & Gordon's "World Without Love," and the Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart of Mine" that unfortunately serve to insinuate that Shepard is not a singer-songwriter but merely a cover girl. --Rob O'Connor

absolutely 5 stars.......2003-09-21
I've always loved this cd - I've always loved the music on Ally McBeal. Recently, I had a beach party - this cd was on my mix - random - everyone went wild! What is this???? Now I've bought 10 copies for all my friends because they love it as much as I do. Vonda Shepard's voice and rhythm are absolutely awesome-what a perfect mix of voice and music. Thank you, Vonda!
An Emotional Experience In Song.......2003-03-15
This is, without question, the greatest compilation of songs from David E. Kelley's "Ally Mcbeal". Songs taken from the third season, a pivotal season because Billy (played by Gil Bellows) dies of a heartattack. It is a time of great heartache and crisis in Ally Mcbeal's life. The romantic disillusion and overwhelming sadness truly makes quality music. Perhaps a lot of music listeners dislike sentimentality, and melancholia, but a lot of great songs in the twentieth century have been tinged with sorrow- Motown made various songs of heartbreak, Dan Mclean, Roy Orbison and various other artists. Grief and sorrow is a part of human nature and real life.
Ally Mcbeal's melancholia seems most poignant in the song "100 Tears Away" but perhaps most powerful in "Crying." These classic songs of woe are sung impressively by the very talented Vonda Shepard. Don Mclean's "Starry Night" is genuinely moving. All the songs are Vonda Shepard renditions, with a few ensemble help. But the sad magic of the show comes alive, making a vivid, lasting impression. This cd was a great way for myself to purge in my own sorrow- my heart was broken in an unsuccessful romantic relationship. Perfect for indulging in sadness (but only to overcome the sadness) are the songs "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted", "Baby Don't You Break My Heart Slow" "This Is Crazy Now" and "I Know Him By Heart.".
Collection of Introspective originals and covers from Vonda.......2002-05-27
This is a great collection sung by a relatively unknown singer. Her songwriting is highly commendable on "100 Tears Away" (one of the best songs on this album) and "Baby Don't You Break My Heart Slow". Covers like "Crying", "Sweet InSpiration", "To Sir, With Love" and "Vincent" are also highly listenable. What strikes me is her strong voice and ability to sing a song almost better than the original. She is definately refreshing and I am so sad that we won't be able to witness her artistry on "Alley" anymore, since it has just been announced it is canceled. Get this record and you won't be dissapointed, something to listen to on a cold winter night or just driving down a highway. I am so glad I took a chance on this recording.
Golden 5:
1) 100 Tears Away
2) Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow
3) Vincent
4) To Sir, with love
5) This Old Heart Of Mine

As Good As The First One.......2002-02-07
After the success of their first release, the makers of Ally McBeal have released a second album featuring the fabulous Vonda Shepard performing songs from the hit TV show. Like the first album, this new release contains covers of many old favorites like "Someday We'll Be Together," "Crying," "World Without Love," and "This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)". She also does a cover of "Vincent," but the third verse of the song is, sadly, missing. Also, like the first album, it contains songs written by Shepard: "100 Tears Away," about finding happiness through sadness, "Read Your Mind," a rather unextraordinary song about wondering what's in a lover's mind, "Confetti," about "children of elite trying to be street" in an attempt to be heard, and "This Is Crazy Now," about filling an empty space created by the loss of a friend. I'm not as big a fan of the songs that Shepard writes herself, but I do enjoy her renditions of "oldies" songs.
Unlike the first album, which was exclusively Shepard, this album has a couple of fantastic duets. Shepard teams up with Al Green for a fun rendition of "To Sir, With Love," with the lyrics changed to "to you, with love" for the duet. Shepard is joined by Emily Saliers (the Indigo Girls) for a wonderful duet of "Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow" written by Shepard. It is an emotional ballad and is, without a doubt, my favorite song on this album. The liner notes contain complete lyrics, and have many more pictures of the cast and of Shepard. This is another great album with talented singers, backup musicians, and background vocalists. If you weren't a fan of the first album, you probably won't like this one any better. However, if you are a fan of the music you hear on the show, or a fan of Vonda Shepard, you will most likely enjoy this album.

If Roast Beef of Old England isn't enough to spawn a dose of contact scurvy, many other of these two dozen salty tunes will set the boat a-rocking. Treasures such as "A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War" and "Drops of Brandy" detail life among British seamen of the early 1800s without dredging up too much of the usual pirates, shipwrecks, or mutiny. It's an historical document of the regular life at sea, inspired by the British Navy novels of Patrick O'Brian, with intentions to anchor the writing in the ordinary sounds and stories of those fictionalized seafaring times. Glad fiddle, fife, and Jerry Bryant's humble six-man choral crew Starboard Mess spill the beans in suitable fashion without a sailor's colorful vocabulary. They supply the "yo ho ho" and annotations, you bring the rum and black powder. --Ian Christe
Customer Reviews:
Set Sail With These Great Songs.......2007-01-28
Jerry Bryant and his Starboard Mess offer up to the listener some wonderful performances of traditional British sailor tunes. They are all performed acapella, and despite other reviewers saying that these songs lack spirit, I find that there's plenty in store. Pennywhistle and fiddle songs are also thrown in and do nothing but add to the enjoyment of this album. Read your favorite Jack Aubrey novel or other seafaring tales such as "Treasure Island" while listening to this album to truly enhance your literary experience. My personal favorites include "Spanish Ladies" and "Bay of Biscay-o."
You should see the looks I get from the little wannabe thugs in their tricked out Hondas listening to hip-hop when I pull up next to them in my conservative white Toyota Camry and I'm belting out lines like "We'll rant and we'll roar like true British sailors...." Jay-Z can't even hold a candle to these wonderful old tunes.
Highly recommended.
Jack Aubrey would have loved it..........2007-01-09
This is the real thing! It takes some time to get into these songs...but then I started to join in. For someone reading O'Brian its a MUST.
Good traditional stuff.......2007-01-05
Just what I was looking for, some traditional British songs from the age of sail. I recomend this for anyone with an interest in British maritime and naval history.
Continuing Enjoyment.......2006-05-05
I've owned this CD for a few years now, and it hasn't become stale yet.
Being a 'younger' person with generally 'younger' preferences in music, and yet still a person thoroughly devoted to Patrick O'Brian and all his works, on first listening I was doubtful.
Another two or three spins around the CD player, though, and I was hooked. Crisp, clear and obviously as historically accurate as they can be, these songs give delight even now.
Best use? Volume dialled up to eleven for the morning drive to work, bellowing along at the top of my voice - and often the bottom of my range! Heart of Oak, Roast Beef of Old England, The Shannon and the Chesapeake - uproarious. Sailor's Jacket is the foot-tappingest instrumental; it still sets my toes a-jumping. And the sweeter songs? Give them plenty of wellie .. Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy is fabulous.
Other big numbers: A Jolly Sailor's True Description of a Man-of-War, A New Sea Song (Sweethearts & Wives) - which has some fabulously 'historically accurate' narrative within (POB readers will know whereof I speak! ;-} - and Distressed Men-of-War - another song referred to within the POB Canon.
Heartily recommended.
Great CD!.......2005-10-28
I am very impressed with the quality of this CD. The sound is clear and the tones perfect. It was a surprise just how familiar all the song is! They are very vivid and worldly. I bought this CD with out knowing what was on it; I was truly surprised and happy with it. My 6th graders will enjoy learning to this CD, and as well as singing the songs to complement our reading of Treasure Island.

While countless fans flock to see soprano Renee Fleming's performances of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro because she's got the voice and the dramatic ability to handle such meaty roles, the versatile singer throws her fans a curveball on Haunted Heart, singing popular standards and ballads as well as a few altered classical pieces. In her liner notes, Fleming calls this album a "look back at the road not taken" -- she played a weekly gig in a jazz club while in school. Nonetheless, her feel for the material here is undeniable. Interestingly, she drops her voice a full octave from her usual tessitura, and the change reveals a robust gospel-oriented approach filled with dramatic breaths and moans. The lyrical Fred Hersch (piano) and the idiosyncratic Bill Frisell (guitar) provide support, and both are adventurous jazz players who create subtle and uniquely haunting backdrops. It adds up to an interesting cross-section of ideas well carried off by the generous talents of all involved. --Tad Hendrickson

Interview with Renee Fleming
Renee Fleming speaks about recent projects, including her memoir The Inner Voice and her recent Handel CD, in our interview.
Customer Reviews:
Sublime and ridiculous.......2007-06-13
The sublime: much of the artistry of this recording is about sound, and the subtle blending/responding of voice with guitar sounds and / or piano sounds. It is in the sensitive musical interplay between the artists where this effort shines. Definitely not recommended for road trips!
The ridiculous: Fleming ended the majority of most phrases in most of the songs with a guttural of some sort which for me becomes irritating to the point of distraction. These punctuations are mostly quite awful: really tasteless, clumsy, and overused big time and I'm amazed at how this ever got released. Without these ersatz testifyin' noises this CD would be stunning.
So, if you have the ability and inclination to edit out this garbage from your perception as you listen I think you'll be glad you experienced these artists at work together. (Unfortunately I'm not up to it).
Eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww.......2007-06-06
Ugh. Like a manufactured home vs. a stick-built house, Fleming's manufactured (aka "training and technique") blues voice compares unfavorably to other jazz/blues singers/lounge acts. Would not, COULD not, listen to this recording straight through--one big long, breathy, minor key train wreck in the making. Took the CD on a road trip and had to pull over and remove from queue--either that or drive into a wall.
Better than I thought it would be.......2007-04-10
I have to admit, Haunted Heart was a lot better than I thought it would be,especially her recordings of "River", "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress, "My Cherie Amour" and "In my life".
I think this is the most artistically successful recording of Pop/Jazz by a classical singer. I enjoyed it even better than the Anna Sophie Von Otter'/ Elvis Costello CD.
The perspective I am coming from is that of a classical singer who started out as a pop singer/songwriter. I perform and teach cross-genre but love a world class instrument such as Flemming's
I wanted to get the perspective of a friend who used to sing jingles and is also a trained singer but is usually critical of any attempts that opera singers make at crossing -over.
My friend is very familiar with Flemming's voice, but did not recognise it in this context when I played the CD for her. Her reaction was very complimentary, although she did comment that the diction was a bit strange.
She then played it for her brother a well known jazz singer and arranger who had a somewhat negative reaction. He found the singing to be overly dark and round. He prefers a cleaner more 'spoken' approach to this style of singing. I understand this perspective and therefore personally prefer Ella to Sarah as well, but let's not get too picky. Obviously, Rene Flemming is of the Sarah Vaghan School of jazz singing, which is not too shabby.
I will continue to enjoy this CD and will wait for another opera diva to top this one. But, somehow I think the next really good CD of Pop/ jazz from an opera star will also come from Rene.
To those who have been unreasonably mean and negative towards her, I can only say you are not fit to polish her shoes!
Brava Renee.......2007-04-09
This talented woman can sing anything. I really enjoyed this cd with the lights turned down and a glass of wine to relax after a very stressful day at work. Renee could definitely have another singing career outside of opera should she choose. Hearing her drop that gorgeous voice down one octave rivals the best chanteuses in the business - Cassandra Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Regina Belle, Sarah Vaughan, etc. This cd of different musical styles reminds me of Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson, two great singers whom could interpret any song genre and make their versions special. I loved all the songs and the standouts here are "Haunted Heart", "River", "My One and Only Love", "My Cherie Amour", "Cancao do Amor", and Beatles "In My Life", and "Hard Times Come Again No More".
I hope Renee keeps recording whatever catches her fancy because I'll certainly always listen.
Art is always new. .......2007-03-10
Renee Fleming is an artist bringing us something new, and beautiful. The poor will always be with us as manifest in those who resent other's movement from their established zones. Renee Fleming is a great female voice with accomplishments her detractors will never have, but in their dreams.
I welcome Renee's elan demonstrated with her recent recordings, Love sublime with Brad Mehldau, and Haunted Heart with Fred Hersch and Bill Frissell. Bravery, fun, and talent combined by artists and for people who are listening. Hearing long time favorites Mehldau, Hersch, and Frissell is all the more sublime.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).
