Fun and well-chosen tracks.......2004-04-08
A fun, unique sampler of the greats. A chronological progression from 1937 - '67, with classic instrumentation and surprises like Carl Smith on "Baby I'm Ready" and Chet Atkins on "Car Hoppin' Mama". Interesting liner notes, too.
If I had a jukebox..........2001-03-13
...this would be the first platter I'd put on it. While this is playing, you can close your eyes and almost feel the honky tonk hardwood floor vibrating with the music and the dancers. The "Honky Tonk Heroes" CD over on Columbia is real nice, but not as fine as this: You got your Hank Williams Sr., your early George Jones, your "Wild Side of Life" from Hank Thompson and your Lefty Frizzell. I guess the only thing missing would be a classic from Patsy Cline but I guess you can't have everything or else life, like this CD,would be five stars.
Can't hardly go wrong with those, but then you've also got your Leon Payne (the Blind Balladeer)and horny Al Dexter (going nuts for that gal with "her skirts up to her knee"). Did you know that the Al Dexter cut was done in the same sessions as Robert Johnson's recordings of "Cross Road Blues" and other blues classics?
Highly recommended, along with the aforementioned "Honky Tonk Heroes" CD.

As Good As It Gets.......2004-03-24
There are a lot of country music anthologies, but this is as fine a 1-disc sampler as one could want. "El Paso," "Ring of Fire," and "Flowers on the Wall" (in succession!) are worth the price of the CD by themselves.
Throw in Patsy Montana, George Jones, the Stanley Brothers, Bob Wills, Flatt & Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Roy Acuff, Merle Haggard & Willie Nelson, and a lot of others and you can't miss.
A Compilation-Lover's Must-Have.......2001-05-13
You have to appreciate the mind that put this CD together. It carries you from the Hoosier Hot Shots' hilarious and irreverent "From the Indies to the Andes in His Undies," to Patsy Montana's luminous yodeling on "I Want to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart," and from the true sobriety of "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow" (this last alone should earn the compilation a following after the success of the Coen brothers' O Brother Where Art Thou?) to the dark humor of George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today." Throw in Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson's duet, "Pancho and Lefty," and get ready to be truly entertained.
If you've got any friends who say they don't like country music, let them borrow this and see if they change their minds.

Customer Reviews:
I don't own this.......2005-11-19
But I wish I had known about it before I bought the many CDs I now own that contain these songs! I've bought many JSP collections of other artists and been very pleased with them. On this set, I just see a great collection for anyone just getting into the really old delta blues, without buying at least six different high priced CDs by these artists separately. If you're wanting to get into the delta blues and wondering where to start....JUMP ON THIS!! .....Then buy the complete works of Robert Johnson.
Great Music, Bad Remastering.......2005-03-03
There's no denying that the music on these discs is fabulous (although Ishman Bracey is hardly of the same caliber as Skip James or Son House). No, the problem with these discs (and JSP discs generally) is that the sound quality is terrible. Obviously any CDs made from old 78s are going to have loud hiss and pops. That's to be expected. What's terrible here is that JSP's solution has, from the sound of it, been to lop off the higher end of the sound, with the result that everything sounds muffled and distant. It's as though they'd put a heavy blanket over your speakers. I prefer Yazoo's method, which has more hiss and other noise, but infinitely more clarity and presence. The difference between JSP's version of Booker T. ("Bukka") White and Yazoo's is like night and day: you'd never know what a subtle vocalist and guitarist he actually was if all you heard were the versions on these discs. It's even worse with the great Skip James, since in his case the originals are in really bad shape: if you're not careful (and JSP is not), you end up with mud instead of genius. In short, the remastering has real consequences for what you can hear of the music. All the nuance is absent on these discs. Get the Yazoo or the Biograph or the Roots-n-Blues ones instead: you'll have more background noise, but you'll also know why people rave over these musicians in the first place.
For the true blues lover.......2004-11-07
For me I first began to be interested in blues after listening to Led Zeppelin and wondering what artists inspired them. However concerning this album, I have a warning you better like the blues or else this will not be your cup of tea. First, you need to understand the sound does not suck, it actually sounds great! Keep in mind. just like it states on the box these are PRE-WAR RECORDINGS, which means there won't be that noise-free perfectly crystal clear audio that so many people (especially young people like myself) are use to. So, if you can get past the sub-par audio quality (by modern day standards), you will treasure this collection of some of the best musicians that have ever graced the earth.
my search is over !!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-02-27
I have owned many different cd copies of each of these artists on various labels, yazoo, document, ect., but none come close in terms of the sound quality ! I know this can be a very subjective issue, bbut believe me i have been listnening to this music four years and i feel as if im hearing the music anew !so dont just sit there shake your moneymaker on down to the record shop and score yourself a copy, and at this price the music wont be the only thing that makes you smile !
The sun is shining in your backdoor today.......2004-02-07
This 5-disc boxset is a must-have for anyone who needs to upgrade (or hear for the first time) even just 2 of the artists included. Look at it like this, buying 2 single discs by any of these guys will put you between $25 and $30. The price for this entire set.
This is the complete pre-war recordings of Skip James, Son House, Bukka White, Tommy Johnson, and Ishman Bracey. In other words, included here is some of the best music America ever produced.
I will first say that in terms of Tommy, Son, Ishman, and Bukka, this is the best sonic quality in which I have heard them. The Documents and Sony/Columbia releases are not as good as this. Skip's stuff was released by Yazoo so if you have that and love it you may think you don't need this for Skip, which is fine though, because the 4 others still sound much better here.
Tommy in particular has never (at least beyond hearing his original sides, decades ago) sounded better, in my opinion. Honestly, I will probably always have a tough time deciphering alot of what he is saying, but I can make out alot more of it here than I ever could in the years I owned the Document disc. His guitar playing and tone sound better, fuller, also. I've appreciated Tommy more in the 4 months I've had this box than I did in the previous however many years I had the Document. I must mention that the one minor mistake of the box is on Tommy's disc. Boogaloosa Woman and Morning Prayer are in the opposite order listed on the cd. Not a big deal at all.
I was quite looking forward to the Bukka disc because previous to buying this box, I only had his Okeh and Vocalion stuff from 1937 and '40. All the earlier stuff was new to me. Having heard it all now, I think the Okeh '40 is his best. His guitar playing is fantastic during all eras, but I like his voice best in '40.
Ishman I was the least familiar with, only having heard some of his stuff at an acquaintances place, but never owning it or getting any repeated listenings of my own. There is some good and not so good stuff here, in my opinion. For me, the defining highlight of alot of Ishman's stuff is the mandolin playing of Charlie McCoy. He is captured louder, and has a much bigger presence with Ishman than he ever had with Tommy Johnson and it makes for a great overall sound.
After buying this in 2003 I checked to see what another site had to say about it, and they said it was great for the blues novice. Hogwash. Whether you never heard of any of these guys before, or have been listening to them since before I was born, this box is a fantastic deal and has great sound (by the standards of what one can reasonably expect when so much of the source material is from Paramounts). The richness and tone of the guitars and voices are there, but without the degree of noise-reduction that flattens the sound. This is an essential box set for any fan of pre-war blues.
Skip: The haunting ghost-voice of Mississippi. Son: All the fire & brimstone. Bukka: Groove-blues to shake your tail feathers to. Tommy: Drunken, languid pain. Ishman: Sometimes great, sometimes goofy.

Customer Reviews:
Back to the Roots.......2006-02-22
Even though the sound has been digitally remastered, this cd still has a scratchy sound to it, but I believe that just adds to the authenticity of LEGENDS OF THE BLUES and gives you a real feel for what made this music so great.
With these old time blues legends, you really hear the pain in their voices. They don't just sing the blues, they lived the blues. Blind Willie Johnson and Bessie Smith will just make you want to hang your head and cry, while Bo Carter and Blind Boy Fuller will make it all better. If you're a traditionalist and want to hear blues at the core of its foundation, this cd is for you.
A solid primer.......2004-01-10
A fine introduction to those wanting more exposure to the blues and a nice addition to for the more knowledgable. Great song selection - there's sure to be something you haven't heard.
And "Lord I Just Can't Keep From Crying" by Blind Willie Johnson gets better with each play.
Great Introduction to the Blues.......2002-02-24
For someone unfamiliar with the blues, this collection is a great one to start your collection. For others only familiar with contemporary blues artists, this CD gives them a real sense of the origins of the blues.
The collection starts off with Bessie Smith's 1925 recording of "St. Louis Blues," arguably the most famous blues recording of the early period. In that song Smith's powerful vocals are almost overshadowed by Louis Armstrong's cornet playing. The song was so popular at the time that it was used as the central part of "St. Louis Blues," Smith's only film appearance.
Other highlights in this twenty song collection include Robert Johnson's "Stop Breakin'Down Blues." For those not familiar with Johnson are in for a treat on this one. His unique emotional style is evident here in this story of betrayal.
Memphis Minnie, arguably one of the best blues guitarists of all-time is represented here in "Nothin' in Ramblin'." Despite being a woman, the subject matter about a woman on the road is very usual for the pre-feminist era. Memphis Minnie truly deserves to ranked with the best in the blues.
Bukka White's "Fixin' to Die Blues" is another gem. This gospel-tinged song although featured only vocals, guitar and washboard makes you want to tap your feet. It really rocks.
"Don't You Leave Me Here" by Big Joe Williams is probably the most contemporary of the songs in this collection in terms of the sound. It's a good example of early "urban blues" style popularized by the likes of Bobby Blue Bland and others.
Although it was recorded in 1965, "Death Letter" by Son House fits nicely in this collection. Featuring House accompanied by his own guitar, "Death Letter" is a great "gut bucket" blues. A gospel influence is also evident here.
What's also great about this collection is the variety of voices. Mississippi John Hurt on "Ain't No Tellin'" has a very soothing voice which compliments his soft guitar playing. Meanwhile, Blind Willie Johnson is rough and raw on "Lord, I Can't Keep from Cryin'."
As you can see this is only a sampling of this twenty song set. It also includes previously unreleased tracks by Leadbelly, Peetie Wheatstraw, and Lonnie Johnson.
If you like the blues, you'll love this collection. Since the blues influenced rock and soul, fans of those music genres should also appreciate this great music as well. If anything, check out the CD for the stories. There are some great stories here.
THIS is the Blues . . ........2000-03-16
Blues is definately something I love. It's something I ache for, and this album soothes my nerves. It's one of the best compilations of old time blues that I've ever heard of. For anyone who enjoys the sweet chordhs of Leadbelly and Muddy Waters, or the melodious pipes of Bessie Smith, this is an ideal selection. These songs hold strong to the Blues tradition of emotion, hardship, love, nostalgia, stress, fear, death and taxes. I highly recommend the purchase of this fine album.

Customer Reviews:
Great traditional hymns sung in the classical country style.......2002-02-10
I first bought this collection at a retail store for a Christmas present for my aunt. She loves it and actually wants to find another set for my grandmother. It's definitely a collection for those who enjoy listening to the "old" classical/western style country music. It's a collection of traditional hymns which I enjoy because I can sing along with it. If you are more into the contempory style Christian music this collection is not for you but if you want traditional old country church style hymns, you'll love this collection.
A disappointment.......2001-01-10
Despite it having only 12 recordings per CD, I had hopes for this set of mostly older country gospel songs mostly by older (50's - 60's) country/gospel singers. What a disappointment. The recordings are new, not old, and seemingly all use the same studio band. The performances are uninspired, the vocals are tired and the singers have lost their vocal range. These singers in their prime did fine country gospel but it's apparent that these recordings were a "come out of retirement" session. There's not a single song of the 36 on 3 CDs that I would listen to again, not when the old recordings are also available.
