Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
While Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, the 1968 album that made Cash a household word, spent only two weeks at No. 1, this 1969 follow-up topped the charts for 20 weeks. As with Folsom, the San Quentin LP had to be edited due to space limitations. Now, 31 years after the fact, the show can at last be heard in true perspective. All the original performances hold up, including the album's hit single: Shel Silverstein's "A Boy Named Sue," presented unbleeped for the first time. Equally impressive are the eight restored tracks and unexpurgated between-song patter. Cash's opening renditions of "Big River" and "I Still Miss Someone" are bracing. So are four closing songs teaming Cash with his complete performing troupe (the Carter Family, Carl Perkins, and the Statler Brothers). Their gospel performances ("He Turned the Water into Wine," "The Old Account," and an early version of "Daddy Sang Bass") are electrifying, as is a concluding medley featuring everyone. Cash is presented here at his roaring, primal best. --Rich Kienzle

In 2000, Sony Legacy issued an expanded CD version of this landmark 1969 live Cash LP, which included "A Boy Named Sue," the Shel Silverstein novelty number that became one of Cash's biggest hits. The original LP contained ten songs from Cash's show, which actually ran far longer; the CD release added eight additional Cash performances. That, of course, happened before his death and the unexpected success of the Walk the Line. Now, this 2-CD set presents the entire concert, start to finish. Still grippingly intense after 37 years, it not only assembles all Cash's performances, but those by the other members of his stage show: June Carter, her mother and sisters (performing as the Carter Family), Cash's buddy Carl Perkins of "Blue Suede Shoes" (and "Daddy Sang Bass") fame, and the Statler Brothers, known then for their 1965 hit "Flowers on the Wall." Cash's performances remain beyond criticism, but Perkins, the Carters, and the Statlers smoke nearly as much. Among the high points is their unreleased, spine-chilling gospel medley of "He Turned the Water into Wine," "Daddy Sang Bass," and "The Old Account." The accompanying DVD comprises a documentary shot at the show by Britain's Granada TV, in which the Cash performances act mainly as a leitmotif to its focus on San Quentin and its inmates. --Rich Kienzle

Always be a good boy and don't ever play with guns.......2007-06-03
Content and Performance - Unlike many other "complete" versions of classic recordings, even the stuff that was left in the vault is pure gold. There is absolutely no filler here. And Johnny's banter with both the other acts and the audience recall a bygone era of ENTERTAINERS.
The other acts, legends in their own right, shine as well. For example, I've always read how underrated Carl Perkins was as a guitarist. His old Sun recordings and even the recently released "Carl Perkins & Friends" with Eric Clapton, George & Ringo, and Dave Edmunds never really let his playing shine through. However, throughout this set, but especially on "Blue Suede Shoes," the arrangement and Carl's guitar are ***SMOKING***. You can hear the missing link between early rock and roll and hard rock in the solo breaks in this one track. Indeed, this one track alone was worth paying for the upgrade of the 2000 disc.
Packaging/Presentation - I absolutely love the decision to put no verbiage at all on the cover of this box. The iconic image says it all. The high-gloss, rigid box with it's fully-printed inside and enjoyable booklet are also a welcome change from a bunch of jewel cases inside a box with a plain black background and a jewel-case-sized booklet requiring a microscope to read it.
San (flippin') Quentin.......2007-03-13
This set rules. The DVD is alright, but the extra tracks on the Cd's are worth twice the price. Johnny Cash at his best. As wellas The Carter Family (2nd gen), the Statler Brothers, and Carl Perkins. Also a well designed box and guide. Exquisite.
A must have for any Cash fan.......2007-03-09
It is a shame that it took so long for the complete San Quentin concert to finally be released. This is a must have for any Cash fan.
Very Very Cool I Loved it.......2007-01-19
This box is awsome. I grew up on this album. In fact it was the 1st Cash LP that I ever owned. Growing up I never knew it but for those of us who owned this first on vinyl it was highway robbery. Don't get me wrong I loved it, but Columbia Records could have released more of the show. It is nice to finaly have the whole show, however I would like to see a DVD release of the show without inmate comments. Just the entire Cash show from start to finish and not just footage of it. As for a piece of history I loved the DVD too!
At San Quentin (Legacy Edition).......2007-01-11
This is a great collection of very early Johnny Cash's recordings.

Album Description
Import only two-disc set features the complete recordings At San Quentin and at Folsom Prison. Johnny Cash had been breaking new ground for a decade when At Folsom Prison suddenly made the world at large take notice. The interaction of a volatile prison population starved for entertainment and a desperately on-form Johnny Cash was electrifying. His somber machismo finally found a home. The songs, which included every prison song Cash knew ('I Got Stripes', 'The Wall', '25 Minutes to Go', 'Cocaine Blues', plus his own 'Folsom Prison Blues') were tailored to galvanize the crowd. As with Folsom, the San Quentin LP had to be edited due to space limitations. Now, 31 years after the fact, the show can at last be heard in true perspective. All the original performances hold up, including the album's hit single: Shel Silverstein's 'A Boy Named Sue'. 37-tracks in all. BMG. 2006.

Going through the motions.......2003-08-04
I dunno....if I was playing to an audience of prison inmates, I don't think I would do "Let The Good Times Roll".
The whole happy-go-lucky thing, not least the lines about the police coming to the door, seems kinda inappropriate.
The music is good, though. King's playing is excellent (even though his vocals seem just a little bit tired here and there), and he is backed by a great band (pianist Eugene Carrier in particular is superb, and Calep Emphrey on the drums does a very fine job as well).
But his cheerful chatter between (and during) the songs is a little bit annoying, and asking the audience to applaud the warden (!) is simply ludicrous. It's as though King is totally unaware of the fact that he is playing to a literally "captive" audience.
When Johnny Cash recorded his "Live at San Quentin"-album, he was very much aware of the intensity of the situation, and he took it and ran with it to great effect, chosing his songs and his mannerisms with his audience in mind. King, who is usually a great entertainer, doesn't seem to know how to do that.
This is not a bad record by any stretch of the imagination, but it feels a little like a wasted opportunity. B.B. King is just going through the motions...he might as well have been playing to Mr and Mrs Middle America and their friends as they sat enjoying a glass of wine, and that's a bit of shame.
3 1/2 stars.
The next best thing.......2002-10-16
I have seen B.B. King live, and he was just amazing - A brilliant musician, a crowd pleaser, and a bundle of energy. He is an amazing performer, and this live c.d. is awesome!! Worthy of any Blues fans collection, "Live at San Quentin" had me wishing I was a fly on the wall at that show. What a performance! Every song here is great, and King doesn't slow down for a minute. Like he says in the album, the blues doesn't mean "blue" as in depressing all the time. I actually listened to the entire c.d. while i was on the treadmill at the gym. It was very upbeat for the most part.
A sensational record that is worth buying. Rather than have his whole catalog, I prefer this! It is just masterful!
Highly recommended!!
What Live Albums Are All About.......2001-08-22
I concur with the first reviewer. This is a great album. I used to like the Cook County Jail album a lot (and it's good), but this one has it beat. B.B. sounds so fresh, yet totally in control. It's really a classic album
King of the Blues.......2001-08-03
Prison performances are sort of a standard for blues singers, and it just doesn't get any better than this -- B.B. King playing his classics live at the San Quentin Correctional facility. I used to have this cassette, but I played it so much that it popped!
Here King is playing to a truly captive audience offering up such classics as "The Thrill is Gone," "Sweet 16," "In the Heat of the Night," and my personal favorite "Nobody Loves Me But My Mother." In the intro to that last selection King explains to the inmates that while the blues was not just about hard times, some of the tunes could be pretty depressing. "Some of it can be pretty down alley. Like I'm fixing to do right now. I'm going all the way down to the bottom." Yet he also encourages the audience to go on and boogie off some of the uptempo tracks. This is music from the heart, and you can just feel the soul of the artist. This is the blues -- unvarnished, straight up and raw -- served up by a master of the genre.
King broke a few strings on his faithful Lucille during this performance, but he never misses a note. His voice is still clear after all these years and he still knows how to spin a tale through song. He does a few audience participation numbers and banters smoothly with the crowd and the band. This is a fundamental recording, and an important part of my collection.

One of B.B.'s Best!!!!.......2005-01-14
B.B.'s live set, "Live At San Quentin," is, perhaps, one of his all time best album releases. From start to finish, he makes you laugh, cry, and boogie, all the while educating you as to what blues truly are, and that lesson being that they are not just weepy, depressing songs, but that they can be both happy and sad. When listening to "Live At San Quentin," it is uplifting to know that B.B. was bringing sunshine into the ordinary dreariness of prison life that his "captive audience" experienced daily. He did not need to remind them of their plight by delving into long, depressing sets and acting the part of a half-hearted rebel pretending to fully understand their situation. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves B.B. King's music, anyone who is a casual fan of B.B. and blues music, to anyone who is an uninitiated blues listener, or any music lovers, in general. This is a first class masterpiece!
One of BB's weakest sets.......2004-05-06
It's not BB;s fault, his singing and playing are faultless on the cd. It seems the jailbirds weren't too receptive to the blues legend and that the material(not all of it) and backup band sound dated. Afful songs like Into The Night, are terribly dated soundubng today. BB however sounds great on Sweet Little Angel, Sweet sixteen, and a few others. all bb performances have value, but try others before this, if this cd were a pizza it would be a regular pepperoni pizza from a chain pizza restaurant. ok
Pure Blues Fun.......2001-10-11
Is there any doubt B.B. King has the sweetest sounding vibrato in blues history? "Live at San Quentin" is a tribute to B.B.'s greatness as a guitar hero and to his ability to entertain. If you can keep an unruly batch of inmates entertained, you must be doing something right. From "Let the Good Times Roll" to "Rock Me Baby," B.B. King shows here that he can make the blues fun- fast or slow.
Live fun without the video!.......1999-04-02
Now I must tell you that I am a B.B. King fan and rarely miss a concert. Any time I want to attend one of his concerts when he is not in town, I slide in this CD. Fun, great music, positive beat-you'd never know that it was recorded in a jail unless the periodic references to the warden. I love this CD because it has his great tunes, audience involvement and shows his caring side. I'd give 83 stars but it only goes to 5-oh well.

Amazon.com essential recording
Johnny Cash had been breaking new ground for a decade when At Folsom Prison suddenly made the world at large take notice. The interaction of a volatile prison population starved for entertainment and a desperately on-form Johnny Cash was electrifying. His somber machismo finally found a home. The songs, which included every prison song Cash knew ("I Got Stripes," "The Wall," "25 Minutes to Go," "Cocaine Blues," plus his own "Folsom Prison Blues") were tailored to galvanize the crowd. This set is all about atmosphere. Live at the Grand Ole Opry this ain't. The current version has been coupled with its de facto sequel, recorded three years later at San Quentin and nearly Folsom's match. --Colin Escott
Customer Reviews:
Johnny Cash at this best, singing to captive audiences.......2005-08-23
Johnny Cash was a legendary figure of American music who often seemed the embodiment of an prophet from the Old Testament (and not one of the happier ones at that). With his passing there is a natural impulse to want to listen to the man and his music, but we really should resist the impulse to take the easy way out and listen to one of the greatest hits collections of The Man in Black (after all, the first Johnny Cash hits album came out forty years ago). Instead you track done one of the superb albums that he put out during his music career. From that perspective "At Folsom Prison" and "At San Quentin" are the two quintessential Johnny Cash albums from what ended up being the "early" part of one of the great careers in American music. Both albums were recorded live in front of eager audiences of prison inmates in the late 1960s and provide ample proof of why Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in country music. This CD presents 25 of the 37 tracks from those two albums and unless you know where one album ends and the next begins you would not think these concerts were recorded three years apart.
Part of the reason these were great albums was because Cash clearly plays to his audience, singing songs about prison, crime and murder, loss and regret, mother and God, and most importantly loneliness. There is no sugarcoating of the harsh realities of prison life in these songs as Cash sings the songs of the gospel of darkness and rage. Cash's singing is truly authentic (you can feel him feeding off of his audience) and the result is compelling cathartic. This is not an album filled with hits although there are certainly several recognizable songs: "Folsom Prison Blues," "I Still Miss Someone," and a duet of "Jackson" with June Carter Cash. But it will be the ones you might never have heard before, such as "I Got Stripes," that stand out in your mind after listening to the album.
What remains constant on both of these albums is Cash's ability to feed off of his captive audience. When he plays to these prisoners you do not doubt for a second that he is one of them, a larger than life outlaw, even though the only time he spent behind bars was in a drunk tank. Cash is clearly on the edge as he rips his way through jailhouse ballads like "Starkville City Jail" and "San Quentin" along with old hits like "I Walk the Line." But it is when Cash sings "A Boy Named Sue," a song written by Shel Silverstein, that he shows his absolutely mastery (the rest of us were just shocked by a hit record with a "bleep" on it).
These have both been legendary albums for decades and overall this is a nice collection of the best of both. Everyone will have an omission to complain about (e.g., no "Ring of Fire"?), but then true fans of the Man in Black and his music will already own both of these albums and the remastered versions with the additional tracks at that. But getting this many tracks from both albums on one CD is still both a treat and a tribute, and if you were going to only pick one classic Johnny Cash album to have in your music library, at least this one keeps you from having to flip a coin to choose between "At Folsom Prison" and "At San Quentin" (FYI: the former is just a shade better).
Hello, I'm Johnny Cash.......2005-02-27
This CD features Johnny Cash's two classic live from prison albums on one CD. These albums are indeed classics, as most people know. However, one song was left off of the CD so that both albums will fit on the CD. The original San Quentin album featured two versions of "San Quentin", and there is only one version of it featured here. I would recommend getting the individual Folsom Prison and San Quentin CDs instead of this one. Those CD feature bonus tracks, plus uncensored swearing.
The Man in Black at his best.......2002-10-01
Both the Folsom Prison and San Quentin live recordings from the late 1960s have recently been reissued with a number of extra tracks included for the first time, but this CD contains some of the best tracks from each recording and has long been a favorite of mine. The songs are great, but the banter between Cash and the audience is most interesting, proving to be straight-laced and even somewhat eye-opening at times. Cash's affinity with those behind bars is apparent as he relishes the response to his more audacious lyrics and makes a few snide comments about prison life and the men who oversee it. I actually am not in favor of entertaining the types of hardcore prisoners found at Folsom and San Quentin, but I enjoy this album immensely nonetheless. Several songs surely made the guards wince, such as Cocaine Blues, with its reference to shooting cocaine and then shooting your woman down, and San Quentin, in which Cash loudly proclaims that a prison such as San Quentin does its inmates little good. In contrast, though, Cash also offers up a few songs with a religious bent to them, such as Peace in the Valley. I especially enjoy the inspirational Greystone Chapel, which was actually written by one of the inmates at Folsom.
It is clearly the audience that drives Cash's selected song choices. There are a number of classic prison songs: Folsom Prison Blues, 25 Minutes to Go, I Got Stripes, Wall, San Quentin, and Starkville County Jail being the most prominent. There are also a few laughter-generating ditties such as Dirty Old Egg Sucking Dog and Flushed From the Bathroom of Your Heart. In contrast, Dark as a Dungeon, Long Black Veil, Send a Picture of Mother, and Green, Green Grass of Home convey a somber, reflective mood. Naturally, Cash also includes hits such as Jackson (with wife June Carter Cash), A Boy Named Sue, and the Cash staple I Walk the Line. Wanted Man, a song written by Bob Dylan, is another standout track that really gets the crowd of prisoners excited.
Clearly, the newly reissued recordings featuring a number of extra tracks from each prison performance make this CD less desirable than it used to be, but these original releases are still well worth the money and served over a quarter of a century as the most desirable Cash recordings available. The audience is obviously enthusiastic, and the man in black is in fine form. By all means, buy the reissued albums separately in order to get the "complete" prison concerts, but appreciate this 2-in-1 CD for all the great music it has provided for us over the years.
Pure Country Classics!.......1999-10-04
You can't get anymore country than this! This album contains the best songs that Johnny Cash has recorded.
Johnny Cash RULES!!.......1999-08-05
I tell you, I hate Counrty music. It bores me to tears, but I LOVE Johnny Cash. Johnny is the type of guy I love. A real wise guy, an in-your-face attitude that doesn't care about being politically correct. In this two-on-one CD you get two of his greatest albums. Even though Johny Cash is in two of the worst prisons in the US, he sings every prison song he knows, makes fun of the living conditions the prisoners have, and makes fun of the warden.
Johnny's songs come across with the wit and personality of Johnny himself. The songs that we have come to know and love, "Boy Names Sue", "Folsom County Blues", etc., and the lesser know songs are all catchy, fun, and to-the-point.
Get this album, even if you hate Country musc...especially if you hate Country music.
