Hard as it is to go wrong when shopping for a Brother Ray package, some career-spanning compilations bundle the decades better than others. Count this one, true to its title, among the very best. The track sequencing is straight-up chronological, opening with 1954's groundbreaking blues and gospel mingling "I've Got a Woman." From there it charges through the late-'50s Atlantic era, rounding up classic singles like "Hallelujah (I Love Her So)," "(Night Time Is) The Right Time," and "What'd I Say." By the time the disc lands us in the '60s, the Genius has saddled up to explore his country side, turning in such popular-music-altering hits as "Georgia on My Mind" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." A final cut jumps into the '80s for the Willie Nelson duet "Seven Spanish Angels," leaving the listener with a solid--and deeply satisfying--sense of Charles' bold artistic wanderings. All that's missing is his soul-dunked rendition of "America the Beautiful." -Tammy La Gorce

after watching the movie, RAY, I bought this cd and just love it. it made me smile.... and some songs made me dance!

3 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Ray Charles.......2006-07-30

I bought it as a gift, not my kind of music.

5 out of 5 stars Women, the good and the bad.......2005-10-22

Great CD for those who love blues and Ray Charles who has a bit of rock `n roll. All the songs somehow relate to women, heartbreak and good times. Cheaper than the Starbucks edition or Ray cd.

Solomon Burke's return to country is as much a spiritual renewal as it is a reinterpretation of some of Nashville's greatest mainstream and Americana songs. The 66-year old King of Rock & Soul has always plied the gospel, of course, but Music City sometimes forgets to feel it in its bones. Buddy Miller, whose gritty hillbilly pleadings always carry a healthy dose of otherworldly soulfulness, is the right producer to bring it all together, since he invites such sidemen as Sam Bush, Kenny Vaughan, and Byron House, as well as guests/duet partners Patty Griffin, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, and Patty Loveless. This is the kind of album that clicks right off but continues to grow on you, such greasy, rolling blues-rock songs as Paul Kennerley and Barry Tashian's "Honey, Where's the Money Gone" loosening up your sacroiliac and Griffin's affecting "Up to the Mountain" morphing into a secular hymn in Burke's big hands. Not everything completely jells: The R&B chorines on "Vicious Circle" jar next to Miller's plinking banjo and Li'l Abner framework, and this rendition of his searing "Does My Ring Burn Your Finger" cries out for wife Julie's songbird harmonies. But when everybody sets their mouth right--as on Burke's duet with Harris on the George Jones/Tammy Wynette classic "We're Gonna Hold On"--the seas nearly part. Throw in some cockiness from the delightfully twisted psyche of Jim Lauderdale ("Seems Like You're Gonna Take Me Back") and Vaughan's blistering chicken-pickin' electric guitar, and lawdy, momma, ain't that good news today! --Alanna Nash

Album Description

Solomon Burke, the King of Rock & Soul, completes his 21st century trilogy with Nashville, a collection of country songs produced by Buddy Miller and recorded at his Nashville home. Solomon returns to one of his first loves, country music, after the GRAMMY® Award-winning Don't Give Up On Me and the GRAMMY®-nominated Make Do With What You Got. (His breakthrough '60s singles on Atlantic Records were in a country vein.)

Nashville contains Solomon's soulful versions of classic country and country-tinged songs (by Tom T. Hall, George Jones, Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, Don Williams, and others) and previously unrecorded soon-to-be standards by Patty Griffin and Gillian Welch, who also contribute vocals. Country divas Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and Patty Loveless also make guest vocal appearances. It all adds up to one of the most affecting marriages of country and soul ever recorded.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-03-16

I ordered this after reading that a critic reveiwed it as the best country album of the year. I was very disappointed. I didn't like the content at all, and the production sounded low-grade. For blues-based Americana, order MoFro instead.

5 out of 5 stars Best Yet From Mr. Burke.......2007-02-23

Solomon Burke has always had things to teach. The soul he brought to "If you Need Me" 45 years ago, and "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" had a profound impact on the Rolling Stones' early work. He could tease the listener a bit, and preach the truth on a sober Sunday morning. The struggle through those early recordings came from being hamstrung by the limited backup arrangements.

Those days are gone. Solomon's voice soars over the acoustic charts used for "That's How I Got To Memphis" and "Valley Of Tears", and punches straight to the heart asking, "Honey Where's The Money Gone". He brings a seasoned reflection to Springsteen's "Ain't Got You" that steps across the decades since the Basie band had Joe Williams shouting to throw him "Smack Dab In The Middle". Each track here engages the vocalist with smart country instrumentalists and vivid duets. It's a triumph all around.

Jagger and Richards (and Brian Jones) brought pointed, fresh guitar arrangements to their early albums, taking Solomon Burke's truth and transforming the genre. With "Nashville" we find lots more to learn from a master.

5 out of 5 stars King Soloman.......2007-02-21

Every song is Great, The Duets are even Better. Hold On with Emmylou Harris is worth the price of theCD.

5 out of 5 stars Nashville or Memphis?.......2007-02-04

I take issue only with the title of Solomon Burke's latest recording. In the company of Buddy Miller, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and other esteemed Nashville artists, it sounds appropriate to title Burke's release "Nashville." However, a better title might be "From Memphis to Nashville," since Burke finds a sublime tone on this recording that mixes the soulfulness of the best of Memphis blues with the plaintiveness of traditional Nashville country. Whatever you call it, though, Burke is in excellent form on this CD and he works very well with artists as diverse as Welch and Parton. Great credit goes to all involved, especially to Burke and Buddy Miller. They know how to make the Memphis and Nashville sounds bring out the best in each other.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Satisfying.......2007-01-08

Love this entire CD. One of my new favorites from start to finish. Fabulous musicians, unbelievable singing. Cannot say enough about this album!

Not only is every song here great, it's also the only place you can get "Soul Meeting" on CD as far as I know. That alone makes the price of admission cheap beyond belief.

Solomon Burke fans should do themselves a huge favor and also pick up his "Nashville" disc.

5 out of 5 stars Very Best of Solomon Burke.......2007-01-19

It was exactly what I had hoped for. Not edited.

3 out of 5 stars esoteric.......2006-08-07

i have a feeling anyone that really is into Burke's music would love this cd. i dont admit to anyone that im not a big fan becuase i get the usual "oh my god what are you talking about solomon burke is amazing." well sorry im only a casual listener at this point and this cd doesnt really do it for me. i bought it for one track "cry to me" and the sound of the CD is much different then the sound that amazon offers as a clip. i can only imagine people that are really into his music loving this as one of their favorites becuase of the true to life sound the album went out of its way to achieve.

5 out of 5 stars Solomon's Gold Mine.......2005-08-22

The 'Bishop of Soul' serves up a service of pure musical salvation here: from the Country number 'Just Out Of Reach' to the classic 'Everybody Needs Somebody To Love' (as covered in the movie 'The Blues Brothers'). These tracks have been lovingly restored from the original single recording sessions, with all their raw power, but also with a good sound balance.

This CD pulses with soul: tight brass, great harmonies, and emotive singing by Burke. If you have Otis, Wilson, James Carr, and Aretha in your collection 'The Very Best of Solomon Burke' is a 'must have'.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Tune in "Dirty Dancing".......2004-09-30

"Cry to Me" would have been a not-so-oldie in the year portrayed in "Dirty Dancing". It was used to great effect for Johnny and "Baby's" first lovemaking session (tastefully) but did not appear on the first soundtrack release which it deserved. It is Solomon Burke at his best. (The man also appeared in a cameo role in the movie, "The Big Easy".) He has continued recording 40 years or more after "Cry to Me", the definitive version, was released. The block of music in this album is a great moodsetter. Dim the lights and let the passion of the tunes flood over you.

Atlantic Records has ridden musical trends since the late '40s; these seven CDs chronicle the first 28 years of the label's work in black pop, during which artists such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding oversaw the creation and flowering of soul music. Also included are classic tracks by the Drifters, Wilson Pickett, Ruth Brown, the Coasters, Sam & Dave, and many others who walk through the dreams of R&B and rock & roll fans. --Rickey Wright

1 out of 5 stars Lost Opportunity.......2007-03-24

The problem with this collection is not the music selected - a look at the tracks will show that. However, the sound quality is abysmal. I owned many of these songs as 45s and the music would often jump right out of the speakers. This collection sounds dull and lifeless. Atlantic used the master tapes made for the vinyl version released in the 80s, with all the limiting and compression needed to squeeze the music onto an LP intact. The rhythmic, driving quality of the bass is bled away along with the highs. A complete disappointment. Demand a refund.

3 out of 5 stars Damaged Goods.......2007-03-15

Disappointed to find that a selection like this is sent in a damaged state with scratches and scuffs to the CD box when the outer cardboard box is in excellent condition.

5 out of 5 stars essential.......2007-03-10

any serious music fan should have this. a shocking amount of great, great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Une magnifique compilation.......2007-02-14

5 out of 5 stars The real R&B sound !.......2007-02-02

Very good CD's set. Buy a part of the R&B of the 20th century with these discs and get back in these fines years! I can listen to very famous tracks, and many more I have discovered with a lot of pleasure. This set is boxed like a LP set. It failed by contening only 8 dics ;-)

Where so many duet projects seem like shotgun marriages, this one sounds like a labor of love, celebrating Southern music as a common denominator that transcends racial and categorical divides. Among the highlights, the pairing of Lyle Lovett and Al Green finds revelation within the funky groove of "Funny How Time Slips Away," while the album-closing "Patches"--with George Jones playing father to B.B. King's son--achieves a spine-tingling majesty. Though Natalie Cole and Reba McEntire misconnect on "Since I Fell for You," Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave) and the late Conway Twitty are at their soulful best on "Rainy Night in Georgia." --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars rainy night in Georgia..........2007-06-22

so I'm in Atlanta a few years back visiting old friends, it's a rainy night and we're kicking back. I see a video of Sam Moore/Conway Twitty singing a duet of RAINY NIGHT IN GEORGIA that touches my soul. The next day I run out and pick up this CD. It still is one of my favorite cds of all time. Rhythm and blues artists singing with county and western stars, sounds like one of those hit and miss concepts but this cd is all hits. Sadly, it was the last recording Conway Twitty ever made but what a pairing, the soulful Sam Moore and the gravel voiced Conway. Other favorites are WHEN SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH MY BABY, Patti LaBelle and Travis Tritt. THE WEIGHT, Staple Singers and Marty Stuart. AIN'T NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING, Vince Gill and Gladsy Knight. A smashing fun rendition of SOMETHIN ELSE, Little Richard and Tanya Tucker. Great music!

It's all been said here, and quite well, too. But if you are - or know somebody - who was born in 1977 or later, tell them that this disc is a stone-MUST HAVE if one wishes to see how (what used to be known as) Rock and Roll originated. Oh...MY fave? Trisha/Aaron's "I Fall To Pieces." Patsy is smiling from above...

5 out of 5 stars RHYTHM COUNTRY & BLUES.......2006-11-06

THIS CD IS VERY GOOD LISTENING FOR ALL AGES, FEATURING THE MUSIC & VOICES OF MANY KNOWN ARTISTS.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-07-25

A friend loaned me a copy of this CD last week and I've been frantically searching for the name of it ever since so that I could buy my own copy and one for my folks. I'm glad I finally located it.
I don't know how I missed this when it came out but I'm glad someone found it for me. I'll be recommending it to all of my musically inclined friends.
My favorite cut is Rainy Night in Georgia; it is pure pleasure to listen to my old favorite Sam Moore. I'd lost track of Conway after he deserted Rock and Roll for Country but this song reminds me why I loved him when he sang "Make Believe" so many years ago. Travis Tritt and Patti LaBelle were made for each other, as were Al Green and Lyle Lovett. Aaron Neville is always a pleasure and Tanya Tucker and Little Richard are pure fun. Mavis Staples is always great when she sings "The Weight" and this version with Marty Stuart is no exception. These are my favorites but there isn't a bad song on the CD.
This is a "must have" for anyone who loves all forms of music.

It doesn't take a lot of marquee names to sell a Ray Charles record, but the Genius proved long before 2004's Genius Loves Company that he was a master collaborator as well as a very natural one. On Genius & Friends, Rhino Records smartly capitalizes on Charles's gift for investing any duet with both backbone and bluesy, velvety soul by rounding up recordings he made in 1997 and 1998 and swelling them with the sounds of artists he inspired. The result is both brilliant and frustrating: brilliant because artists like Mary J. Blige, Gladys Knight, and Patti LaBelle so reliably tread their tracks with care and affection, reining in all that raw vocal power where a song requires it; and frustrating because it would have been incredible to hear each of the very different artists gathered here trading verses with Brother Ray in real time--producer Phil Ramone fused these songs together. (In two cases, we do get the pleasure: "Big Bad Love", recorded in 1994 with Diana Ross for the film The Favor, and "Busted," recorded live in 1991 with Willie Nelson.) To the producers' credit (add Ahmet Ertegun and Quincy Jones to Ramone) the audio wizardry required to make this disc does not once interfere with the sense it conveys that the chosen artists really were Ray Charles's friends. Hear it especially on the Idina Menzel heartwarmer "I Will Be There" and Blige's "It All Goes By So Fast," as silkily convincing as it is bittersweet. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Before the legendary Ray Charles passed away last year, he laid out plans to use a set of recordings produced in 1998 to create an album of superstar duets with some of his favorite contemporary artists. It was among his last requests to his management that the project be completed and released. Now the Genius must be smiling up above as this stunning collection, finding him in tremendously strong voice on a lineup of memorable songs, is released on Rhino. Produced in conjunction with Ray Charles Enterprises and Ray's fellow music legends Ahmet Ertegun and Phil Ramone, Genius & Friends follows on the heels of the phenomenally popular Genius Loves Company, and it shines throughout as Charles and an all-star roster of vocal partners serenade in sublime harmony.

4 out of 5 stars Feel alot of Energy, Emotion and Soul from the Genius.......2006-04-30

This is worth the Price as I mention since I purchase this. Why people say this isn't original or it's not showing Ray Charles more approval? C'mon now. This is not a bad CD or somewhat too overrated or too way outta hand. I mean this is what Ray leftover from 1997-1998 (2 Years back, somewhat like a Yearbook you get @ school, college or high school).

I love everything that Ray Charles does from the Heart. He'll always be remembered. He help put the Industry on top with his tenderly, most-touchable, strongful, and outrageous gift. This Man is a Blessing to the World of Music. Sorry Maxx (or Bro. Max), you seem to be missing some acceptions.

Thank God for Brother Ray.

Back to the Album.

It's full of collabos of some of the most talented people out there on this Disc which was produced by no other than Phil Ramone also noted producers who are additional. Angie Stone, Mary J. Blige, John Legend, Patti Labelle, Diana Ross, Gladys Kinght, Alicia Keys, Willie Nelson, Leela James, George Michael, the list goes on. Bad arrangements, nice work, cool vocals, really touchy, feelin' the air with fire like cookin' Gumbo.

Again this is worth the Price. Don't be too shy or too distasteful. Lemme see if u wanna a touch or taste of some Ray Charles. The last album whom was released posthumously after his death (which went home for 10 Grammys each) was my favorite to top from the Genius. As Frank Sinatra noted on RC, "The only Genius in the business".

They actually didn't note the name of the musicians who play on there. Well overall Good Work and Much Love in Heaven from Ray. We miss you Ray Charles. You're long remembered and unforgotten!
Checkout the Luther tributes i.e. "Forever, For Always, For Luther" and "So Amazing: A Salute Tribute to Luther Vandross" if you Must.

3 out of 5 stars The Genius Syndrome.......2006-03-12

There are sometimes when a duets album can be over the top, and there are other times that a duets album doesn't have what it really had before. That has arguably been the cases with Ray Charles. His previous Genius Loves Company album, was definitely one of the most breathtaking, well-received albums I've ever heard within the last few years. Arguably, when Warner Brothers and Rhino heard about the success of that great pop gem, they decided to make a Charles duets lbum of their own from Ray's older recordings. But does it really deliver what Genius Loves Company was as a sequel?

Ray Charles Genius & Friends, is a compilation of Ray's left over recordings from his life that weren't conjured or released before. The songs here however, don't really seem to have what Genius Loves Company did which is a dissapointment, considering some of the artists came out after Ray's passing like John Legend with Touch and Leela James with Compared To What. Still, there are some brightsides, and well-conjured duets like You Were There with Gladys Knight, Busted with Willie Nelson, and You Are My Sunshine with Chris Isaak. The songs here were mastered well, but the duets don't seem to have the feeling that this is another well-recognized masterpiece.

All in all, Genius & Friends by Ray Charles isn't at all a good buy for anybody who isn't familiar with his music, or even for die hard Ray Charles fans. The feeling on this albumisn't as good as Genius Loves Company was. I honestly suggest you buy that record instead over this one. This duets album shows that the genius isn't what it is cracked up to be.

2 out of 5 stars Not the same.......2006-01-14

I purchased the original Genius and Comapany and adore it! I thought this CD would be as nice but I was disappointed. Although Ray Charles' voice is engineered to be a bit stronger on this one, the overall product was a letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Soul and Emotion!!!.......2006-01-14

Listening to "Genius & Friends" brought about the emotions and strong feelings. Ray's voice was more pleasant and less wavering than on "Genius Loves Company." Though you could tell the voice was getting older, the blend was better. I commend the producers for following-up on Ray's wishes. It was difficult to keep back the tears. "All I Want To Do","It All Goes By So Fast", and "You Were There", hit me the most. This is the one to buy and preserve.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite there.......2006-01-13

I was a little disapointed in the material selected for this compilation. The singers that joined him are no doubt great, but I just found this album to be lacking in emotion and R&B. If you want a great CD with Ray Charles along with others go right for Ray Charles in "Genius Loves Company." It will satisfy!!!

This album is a rarity these days because it features a black guy who ACTUALLY SINGS instead of just talking fast like he was wired on Benzedrine in the mistaken belief that Rap consitutes music. My favourite track on this album is the soulful and mournful "We Had It All". This album wa released at a time when a music artist was judged solely on the quality of his songs instead of how many half naked women with big breasts he could fit into a 3 minute so called "Music Video".Dobie my man, you ROCK!!!

The self-proclaimed "King of Rock 'n' Soul" upholds his title on this follow-up to his 2002 Grammy-winning comeback, Don't Give Up on Me. At 64, Solomon Burke's voice still has an electric crackle. Every low purr and keening near-falsetto that he applied to a string of hits between 1961 and 1968 that helped build Atlantic Records remains intact. In fact, if anything, he's more persuasive and versatile today. Burke breathes zestful life into material as diverse as the opening stomp, "I Need Your Love in My Life," the testifying "Let Somebody Love Me," a sweet reading of the Band's "It Makes No Difference," and Hank Williams Sr.'s country-gospel "Wealth Won't Save Your Soul"--the latter of which Burke, who's an ordained bishop, takes to church with a soaring organ-driven arrangement.

Producer Don Was draws on the classic Stax and Muscle Shoals sounds, using keyboards and guitars--the latter played by Ray Parker Jr. and Shoals veteran Reggie Young--to underscore Burke's powerful vocal melodies. And the bloodlines of classic Memphis propulsion run through drummer James Gadson's veins. With such superb accomplices Burke doesn't just make do... he makes great music. --Ted Drozdowski

Album Description

A classic soul album from the GRAMMY-winning legend! Produced by Don Was and featuring brand-new songs by Van Morrison and Dr. John

One of the most powerful and original voices in the history of soul music, Solomon Burke continues his career renaissance with Make Do With What You Got. Produced by celebrated studio auteur Don Was (The Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt), and featuring veteran soul musicians such as Ray Parker Jr. and Reggie Young, Make Do With What You Got is a return to Burke's soul roots after the Grammy-winning 2002 album Don't Give Up On Me. Like its predecessor, the album contains songs by some of rock's finest songwriters: Bob Dylan, Jagger/Richards, Van Morrison, Robbie Robertson, Dr. John, and others. Also included is a personal introduction by Van Morrison.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Heading back to Nashville........2007-05-14

The errors on "Make Do With What You Got" start with Don Was and Ray Parker Jr. Was' production and Ray's guitar are precisely the kind of abominations that may have prompted Burke to give such an apologetic title to this CD. Could no one more suitable for the job be found? Why pair up the guys who gave us "Walk The Dinosaur" and the Ghostbusters theme song with the guy who gave us "Got To Get You Off Of My Mind"? It makes no sense whatsoever.

"Make Do With What You Got" is a huge let down especially when one considers the other two CDs that bookend this one - the very good "Don't Give Up On Me" (which contains a much better reworking of a Van Morrison song than this CD does - namely "Fast Train") and the excellent "Nashville", which enjoys extraordinary production values, a smoking band and a commanding Burke.

"Make Do" is middling Burke. Barely passable actually, saved only by the fact that it is Burke singing despite Ray Parker Jr's constant clam blowing and Was' white bread production.

4 out of 5 stars Make DO with What you got.......2006-03-10

There is nothing like "Old School.recording Artist to make a play to renew real music.

5 out of 5 stars The King Is Back.......2005-12-09

Solomon Burke sings to your soul. You don't just hear his music, you feel it with everything in you as he bares his soul to you. He sings from his heart with so much raw emotion you can't help being touched at a level few others have reached. From the 60's to his new CD nothing has changed and that is why he remains the King.

4 out of 5 stars Damn! Welcome Back, Solomon!.......2005-11-06

It's crazy that Solomon Burke has been absent from the music scene for as long as he has. Or more accurately, it's a crime that we have been ignoring him for all these years. Burke is a soul singer of the same stature as Percy Sledge (another criminally neglected artist who is still releasing new material), or Wilson Pickett, but our collective indifference/negligence for the past three decades has rendered him obsolete, at least in a commercial sense. 2002's "Don't Give Up On Me" was an aptly titled `comeback' album of Burke's that served notice, reminding us that after all these years, Solomon Burke still possesses a powerhouse of a voice, not to mention excellent taste. "Make Do With What You Got" is further evidence that Burke is back, and he is here for the long haul.
Burke is a soul singer in the truest sense of the word, but he also an artist willing to take risks and stretch himself toward new territories. "I Need Your Love in My Life" opens the album, and it is uncanny how much it rocks like a long-lost Big Star track, only with Burke's authoritative presence replacing Alex Chilton's keening tenor. A few familiar tunes appear here, but all are reformulated into something surprising and original. Bob Dylan's "What Good Am I?" (from Dylan's excellent "Oh Mercy" album) is especially surprising, wrapped in a funky shuffle that manages to suggest Jean Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff", while adding a lighter shade to one of Dylan's more pensive compositions. Rick Danko's (another keening tenor) interpretation of Robbie Robertson's "It Makes No Difference" will always remain definitive, but Burke's powerful interpretation brings the song into a new light, bringing gospel overtones that Danko never could have suggested. Gospel music informs virtually everything on this record, but you can virtually feel the church surround you on tracks like "Fading Footsteps", "At the Crossroads" and "Wealth Won't Save Your Soul". Even The Jagger-Richards composition "I Got the Blues" sounds like it is emanating from a Memphis church.
Back in the `60s, Solomon Burke was the lifeblood for artists like the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and the Band, providing inspiration and sometimes material for their careers. Forty years later, times have changed quite a bit, and the situation has reversed. I am convinced that there is still an audience for intelligent, heartfelt and compassionate soul music, especially when such great material is entrusted to a super-talented legend like Solomon Burke. Commercial radio programmers might not know it, but I do, and I hope you will take time to discover this for yourself as well. A- Tom Ryan

4 out of 5 stars A measure of r&b, a dash of the blues and a whole lotta soul.......2005-10-25

Solomon Burke is an American original. He is nearly 70 years old now and I am here to tell you that his latest release "Make Do With What You Got" sounds every bit as good to me as the highly regarded recordings he made for Atlantic records some forty years ago. Released earlier this year by Shout Factory "Make Do With What You Got" spotlights Solomon Burke's incredible vocal prowess which is readily apparent on songs like Bob Dylan's "What Good Am I?" and "At The Crossroads", a tune written by another legendary figure Van Morrison. I might also recommend to you "It Makes No Difference", "After All These Years" as well as the amazing title tune "Make Do With What You Got". The wild card on the disc would have to be the final track "Wealth Won't Save Your Soul" which was written more than a half century ago by none other than Country Music Hall of Famer Hank Williams. You might recall that Solomon Burkes 1960 recording "Just Out Of Reach" was a huge hit on the country charts and sold well over seven million copies!!
It is a mystery to me why Solomon Burke never became a bigger star. I would compare him to Charlie Rich, another incredibly gifted artist who had a highly successful career but never quite made it to the top. It seems to me that both men made a conscious decision many years ago to simply sing the songs they loved to sing. Since they both refused to be pigeon-holed into any one genre the record companies simply didn't know what to do with them. "Make Do With What You Got" only reinforces my admiration for Solomon Burke. The man can still belt out a tune with the best of them. And kudos to the excellent work of the backup band as well. If you are like me and have not heard a Solomon Burke recording in a long time then you are in for a real treat. Recommended.

Nothing's ever topped the golden age of soul for party music, and this four-CD set offers the distilled essence of the good times from those difficult years. Where Rhino's Beg, Scream & Shout! and Can You Dig It? compilations are thoughtful, wide-reaching surveys of the range of soul music in the '60s and '70s, respectively, Soul Spectacular! has exactly one thing on its track listing: mammoth crossover hits that add up to one blockbuster of a party. Of its 90 tracks (all presented in their original single versions), 47 were No. 1 and 15 topped the Pop and R&B charts. As such, the poles the set revolves around are Detroit (the Apollonian glories of Motown and Hot Wax: refined, orchestrated, and quality controlled) and Memphis (the Dionysian thrills of Stax, Volt, and the scene around them: raw jams that sounded like they'd been caught on tape by happy accident), but every other place in the country that was capable of turning out a national smash is represented, too. The '60s, for these purposes, extend back to definitive 1959 hits by Ray Charles and Barrett Strong; the '70s of soul peter out sometime around 1974, with a final appearance courtesy of the Manhattans' aptly named "Kiss and Say Goodbye," from 1976. By then, the vocal intensity of soul was taking a back seat to the new and slicker beats of funk and disco. But Soul Spectacular! is also a tribute to an era of independence and innovation, the years when tiny labels (their names like found poetry: Nola, Arctic, Par-Lo, Ovide, Bamboo) could make the whole country dance for a few weeks, if only because they found a groove nobody had discovered before. --Douglas Wolk

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars No Sam or Stevie?.......2006-03-02

I ain't dropping stars for this one because it is absolutely brilliant as far as I am concerned. Love every track from head to toe BUT not only is there no Sam Cooke but there's no Stevie Wonder either. So maybe the title should have been 'The Greatest Soul Hits of all Time without arguably the 2 MOST influential Soul artists of all Time' certainly 2 of the top 5 eh? Aretha, Ray and Otis are here. Anyway back to the set and it is a fantastic list of brilliant, well known and some hidden, gems! Production is good - sounds like the originals to me! 'Cept they don't have that little crackle that my record player used to create! If you wanna buy this and are just checking the reviews to tip the scales - I say DO IT! You WILL love it, but you might just wanna get a Sam & Stevie best of set to go with it.

5 out of 5 stars Rhino 4CD Soul Box Familiar , "Spectacular" Starter Set.......2004-12-23

If Rhino's 4CD "Soul Spectacular" had been released in the mid-1980s it may have stood with Clapton's "Crossroads" and Bob Dylan's "Biograph" as among pop's essential box sets. Success of films like "Dirty Dancing" and "The Big Chill" returned many of these songs to public awareness as baby boomers recognized them as part of the idealized soundtrack of their lives. As Ben Edmonds says in the liner notes, "This music isn't simply of its time; it embodied it." This was a far cry from music critic Dave Marsh once wondering in the mid-1970s if Wilson Pickett and other soul giants would one day be available only on bootlegs.

But the more than 20 years since have seen these songs anthologized countless times on soundtracks, hits and anthology collections (yours truly once owned every one of these songs in one recorded format or another) and played daily on oldies radio. (Barbara Mason's grand 1965 original, "Yes I'm Ready," far from the biggest hit here, has aired more than one million times.)

This collection's best and worst point is its familiarity. Even casual pop music fans know the signature songs of the Temptations, Mary Wells, Percy Sledge, Ben E. King and others here. No choice is a glaring misstep but some are questionable: why "I Count the Tears" from the Drifters instead of 1964's more popular "Under the Boardwalk" or 1959's more influential "There Goes My Baby?" Why James Brown's now-cliched "I Got You (I Feel Good)" over "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," one of music's most aggressive, important singles? Let alone essential performers (Sam Cooke? The Dells? Jerry Butler?) left out altogether. Motown, pop culture's most active recycling plant, whips through 1962-3 songs from the Miracles, Vandellas and Supremes; only three Motown hits are heard across discs 2-3.

Those two middle discs are the set's best as they zip through a variety of styles: Muscle Shoals soul (Sledge, Brook Benton) Philadelphia (Fantastic Johnny C, Intruders, Delfonics), Chicago (Barbara Acklin, Billy Stewart) and, of course, Memphis and Detroit giants. Each artist is represented by one song except Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding, featured on solo and duet track each. The liner notes tell little more than oft-told tales of Stax and Motown's records respective founding.

"Soul Spectacular" is just that; 90 clear-sounding classics worth playing at any party or road trip without a dud in the bunch (at least until deep into disc four with one too many smooth Philadelphia International ballads in a row.) It's a first-class soul starter set, with greatest hits sets from any major individual artist listed an essential buy.

4 out of 5 stars A True Spectacular Even Without Mr. Cooke!.......2004-06-30

It is truly one of the best collections I have ever seen/heard!
Ok, it doesn't include Sam Cooke, but hey, you can't have everything! It has NEARLY everything BUT Sam Cooke!
Rhino obviously couldn't obtain the rights to Sam's music, but they have done a great job of obtaining some of the best of the Stax/Volt, Atlantic, Motown and other great Soul Recording Labels!
Several of these tunes have been PLAYED TO DEATH by 'Oldies' radio formats-- MOST OF THE MOTOWN STUFF--, but there are many gems in this set of CD's amongst the 'standards'--Gems like CRY BABY by Garnett Mimms, WALKING THE DOG by Rufus Thomas, MEMPHIS SOUL STEW by King Curtis, LOVE IS A HURTIN' THING by Lou Rawls, and oh so many more! There are 88 songs to choose from, and if you want a decent collection of Soul & R&B oldies, this is it!
I am a bit of a musicologist and
have studied this music for 20 plus years, and I must say that this is a very groovy 4 CD set for Musical Novices and Experts alike! I'm impressed!
I didn't rate it 5 stars because I agree that leaving Mr. Cooke out is not cool!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Cooke or no Cooke.......2002-05-18

Often when a particular artist is not included in a collection it is because rights were not available for use of his/her recordings. That aside, this box set could not have a more accurate title -- it is spectacular in every sense. The PBS tie-in concert is a fund-raising staple for good reason -- 40 years of brilliant music performed by some of the greatest entertainers of the century. See it, hear it, buy it, love it!

1 out of 5 stars for one reason only.......2002-05-08

Not one Sam Cooke song? You've got to be kidding.
