Amazon.com's Best of 1998

Six years in the making, Car Wheels somehow lives up to its lofty expectations because of Williams's direct songwriting and her wonderfully unaffected vocals. With assistance from cohorts such as Steve Earle, Williams uses the acoustic accents of Dobros, mandolins, slide guitars, and accordions to add color to her grooves, whispers, and rumbles. Her lyrics are undisguised as she presents to us the travelogue of her memory. We can't wait for 2004! --Marc Greilsamer

Amazon.com essential recording

Lucinda Williams makes this whole music thing seem so simple: Write in plain language about the people and places that crowd your memory; add subtle flavors of a mandolin here, a Dobro there, perhaps an accordion or slide guitar; above all, sing as honestly and naturally as you can. Of course, it took her six years to achieve this simplicity, an amazing achievement considering the number of knobs that were turned. Her exquisite voice moans and groans and slips and slides--she delivers a polished tone in a coarse manner. On the superb "Concrete and Barbed Wire," soft acoustic guitars are punctuated by electric slide, accordion, mandolin, and Steve Earle's harmony. Williams's deeply personal stories are matched with bluesy rumbles, raunchy grooves, and plaintive whispers. The entire Deep South is reduced to a sleepy small town filled with ex-lovers, dive bars, and endless gravel roads. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars Lustful.......2007-06-09

If you're looking for a nice soothing CD to "set the mood"...then this CD album by Lucinda Williams should do the job quite nicely. There are a couple of songs that are just a bit "too country" for me...but the rest of the CD more than makes up for this minor deficiency.

5 out of 5 stars Lucinda Williams is my ELVIS!.......2007-04-12

I am BLOWN AWAY by this album!

Only once or twice if you're lucky in a lifetime if you come across an artist with this level of creativity and talent.

"Too Cool to be Forgotten" - Hey Hey....this song will be remade by future generations of Rockers.

"On the way to Jackson" - A fantastic song that sounds like it's been around since pioneer days and yet it had just been CREATED by Lucinda!

"Lake Charles" - Oh my! What a DELICIOUS SONG!

I can't say ENOUGH how FANTASTIC this whole album is and I don't like writing long-winded reviews...but to give it justice - I would have to create a review as big as anyone's viewing area. Every song on this album is INCREDIBLE!

Every song...something that future generations will re-do. Way ahead of it's time in creativity and originality.

P.S. I've read a lot of people comparing Lucinda Williams with Patty Griffin. Hands down. No contest. Lucinda RULES though I also love Patty Griffin incredibly well.

Recommend this seller highly - quick delivery and CD was perfect.

5 out of 5 stars A solid 5 stars.......2007-01-20

This has become one of my desert island CDs - right along with Joni Mitchell's "Hejira", Bob Dylan's "Desire", Stevie Wonder's "(well, ALL of his 1970's music), Emmylou Harris' "Wrecking Ball", Neil Young's Crazy Horse stuff... The song that really gets me is "2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten" - for that incredibly liquid guitar sound. It's not my favorite song on the CD - that is "Lake Charles", but hey - the next time I listen I'll probably have another favorite song. Every single selection on this CD is a masterpiece of the genre - there is not a single throwaway track in sight. This is roots soul music - anyone who has ever lived on a farm, hitchhiked across the countryside, found themselves alone and come to terms with their own sense of being, been hammered by the storms of life and love - would find a lot to like about this music. Her voice is not polished, it is not a five octave mindblower, it is not smooth or pitch-perfect. What Lucinda William's voice is though is... real, powerful, compelling and very sexy. This vocalist writes songs perfectly fitted to her instrument, and then creates a sound that washes over me in a hundred layers all at once. That's damn fine music in my book...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD from Lucinda Williams.......2007-01-09

The CD Car Wheels on a Gravel Road contents of rather good music numbers, many of the numbers are exceptionel good. E.G, Car Wheels... Joy and Still I Long for Your Kiss.

This 1998 Grammy-winning release--Lucinda Williams's popular breakthrough--certainly merits the double-disc "deluxe edition" treatment. And it's hard to find significant fault with anything here: the remastered version of the original album, the second-disc live performance from that year featuring guitarists Kenny Vaughn and Bo Ramsey, and the smattering of outtakes (highlighted by a slower, sadder version of "Out of Touch" than the one Williams ended up releasing). Yet the set misses a glorious opportunity to document one of the more laborious (and notorious) recording projects, one that saw Williams switch cities, studios, and producers three times before she was satisfied with the results. And while the results confirm her judgment, fans would likely find it fascinating to hear a lot more takes from the original Austin sessions (featuring accordion master Flaco Jimenez and keyboardist Ian McLagan) or outtakes from the Nashville sessions with producer Steve Earle, before Williams overhauled the project in Los Angeles with Springsteen keyboardist Roy Bittan. Such a set could have put a revelatory spotlight on the creative process that resulted in an album widely regarded as Williams's masterpiece; instead, this release is more like souvenir snapshots. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Deluxe in every way.......2007-06-28

Lucinda Williams may be notoriously slow in releasing albums, but such laborious love for her craft is evident in her choice to reissue Car Wheels on a Gravel Road as part of a new deluxe edition set. The set, which combines a remastered version of the original album and live cuts from her performance at Penn's Landing during the WXPN Singer Songwriter Festival, is a collector's dream. Outtakes and new versions of favorite tunes done live make the investment worthwhile. As always, however, Williams own gravelly, soulful tone combined with realistic lyrics ("conversation with you was like a drug.../cause there's something about what happens when we talk") easily remind us of our faults, our successes and why we love her in the first place. She could be us, singing about the troubles in life without bemoaning them or harping too long on the choices that brought them. Her musical gestures resonate similarly--perfect chords, never a note too long or inappropriately placed. Beautiful tone combined with the hearty ability of this songstress lulls you into retrospective bliss. This double CD set can bring you up, remind you why you're down and can easily please a crowd of diverse fans.

5 out of 5 stars Great Concert in South Philly.......2007-03-15

Up from DC to visit a woman I'd just started dating and she suggested going to the WXPN free festival being held right along the Delaware. Southern Culture on the Skids were just finishing, but we were there to see the sometime associate of Steve Earle, who my friend adored.

The next act was nothing short of revelatory. The guitars dueled to incredible intensity, the songs were simply brilliant, and I was completely enamored by the singer in jeans and cowboy hat. My friend was a little put out by my rapt attention, but I just couldn't help it. Lucinda Williams was performing the most magical show I had seen in more than a decade.

I went from zero to all of her stuff within a couple of days and caught a few more shows up through Essence. During that stretch, I know of no stronger composer and performer; and her rendition of Masters of War was enough to make you want to take to the streets.

Anyway, great album, great show, great artist in her prime. You'd be hard pressed to do better.

5 out of 5 stars A great album gets a polish.......2007-01-30

Lucinda's quintessential album gets a bit of a production polish with this reissue that falls just short of a 10th anniversary. Yes, Disc One of this edition contains the original material from "Car Wheels," but, in my opinion, the songs sound MUCH, MUCH better - crisper, clearer, with greater definition. There was nothing wrong with the original production, but this one just pops out of my headphones and car stereo speakers with a bit more oomph.

Three added-value tracks follow "Jackson," the album closer. "Out of Touch" ended up on her "Essence" CD, and I think that version is the better one, but this early attempt is still interesting to hear. "Down the Big Road Blues" is a tremendous tune that did not make the final cut, probably because it's more of a pure blues number, unlike the material that did make it. And who can resist any version of "Still I Long For Your Kiss"? This music is sexy as hell!

"Car Wheels" is one of my favorite albums, and ranks alongside "World Without Tears" as my favorite Lucinda record. She's a phenomenal songwriter, able to craft deeply personal lyrics that have universal value, and has a voice to rival Bono's in its uniqueness. (Just as you'd recognize Bono's voice almost instantly, so Lucinda's is easily recognized.) She sparkles on the second disc of this release, recorded live in Philadelphia back in 1998. Lucinda and her band burn through a great set that includes "Joy," "Hot Blood," "Changed the Locks" and "2 Kool 2 B Forgotten."

I'm not a big fan of reissues, but this is no retread, this is the ultimate version of a fantastic album.

3 out of 5 stars Nice extras, horrible sound.......2007-01-28

Add one more title to the list of unfortunate recent remastering jobs: Lucinda Williams' "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road".

I listened to the new version of "Car Wheels" (one of my two favorite Lucinda albums) through headphones for the first time last night and couldn't get beyond the second track. By now, this is a familiar story - anemic bass, too high volume levels that distort at normal listening levels, and shrill, harsh sound. It also sounds hollow and "phasey", which to me suggests low-bit-rate mp3s. There's no clipping, but every track is mastered at the maximum peak level (something which shouldn't happen given the variety exhibited in these songs).

If you've still got the original CD, hold on to it because that sounds wonderful, with warmth, texture, visceral bass. It rocks.

What happened to this disc answers one question. When it comes to reissues of older albums, I've often wished that the remasters could be compared to the original tapes, or even to an LP. Maybe the warmth and texture in the original CDs were actually the byproduct of analog distortion and deteriorating tapes. But when Cream's "Disraeli Gears" and Lucinda's "Car Wheels" have undergone almost exactly the same changes, that tells me the people doing the remastering are just willfully altering it to their own peculiar tastes. (I should have been forewarned by how badly the Universal "deluxe edition" of The Who's great debut album turned out. Lost Highway has denied having anything to do with this reissue, so I assume Universal is again to blame.)

Reviewing the "sound" of this reissue on a car stereo or portable player is missing the point. Does anyone even know what a well-recorded and reproduced piece of music sounds like anymore?

5 out of 5 stars Yes, clearly worth trading up.......2007-01-06

The original Car Wheels is a five-star album if there ever was one. This landmark work is beyond question on of the finest albums of the 1990s. But you probably already know that. But does it really sound better, as there is some debate in this review section? (And the original is hardly shabby.) First, the difference in my pretty good car system (VW Monsoon, so nothing truly special) was not suble, if that's any help. If you have anything approaching a high-end system in your home or car, this is an easy call. The instruments just jump out of the speakers in a way the original mastering did not. Second, the added songs are certainly worth it. Third, the live set is mandatory if you love Lucinda; it was a great period of her live performances. So there you have it. And if you're new to Lucinda, it is hard to figure any down side to buying this. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Soviet Army Band & Chorus aren't taking any prisoners!.......2007-05-12

If you enjoy a good stiring martial male chorus then spend some time with these guys. They're all graduates of Soviet musical acadamies and any one of them could have graced the top opera houses of the world. You don't have to know any Russian to appreciate this CD. The songs are glorious (just don't translate them -- machine guns, death to foes, etc.), and will make you want to march on Berlin all over again.

5 out of 5 stars Good music........2007-03-09

I had heard a few songs by the Red Army Choir in the past and happened upon this CD set a while back, I found it to be far better than I had hoped and would reccoment it to anyone who enjoys Russian folk music, choir in general, and cultural items from when Russia was still the Soviet Union.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2007-02-27

I'm so glad I stumbled onto this.

Spirited, committed, manly singing. Soul-shaking stuff! The ensemble is incisive; soloists are marvelous. The folk melodies are enchanting. The songs--and the singers--are bound up in the cultural fabric of the Cossacks, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky...on and on.., Chekhov, Trotsky, Nabakov... This music conveys the great romantic, dignified, boistrous soul of the Russian People. (Loosely speaking. Some members of the chorus were presumably of other nationalities once part of the Soviet Union. And some of the songs are not Russian).

I don't speak Russian, but listening to this makes me wish I did. What a beautiful-sounding language it is.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2007-02-22

Even though I cannot speak Russian, the quality of this choral group is beyond excellent. Many of these pieces are extremely moving and stirring. The rendering of the Soviet anthem and the song "Let's Go" (V'put) come to my mind. "Let's Go" became a huge hit in Russia when it was featured in a movie about the Great Patriotic War, and indeed, hearing it - you can well imagine ranks upon ranks of hard-eyed, grim-faced Soviet soldiers striding into battle against the Wehrmacht.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate collection.......2004-06-15

Excellent performance by the choir and the orchestra. The grandeur, the charm, and the romance! Great collection of songs, sure to bring back memories!

Don Was, the producer who transformed Bonnie Raitt from cult hero to pop star, tried to jump-start the stalled careers of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings by producing their recent albums, Across the Borderline and Waymore's Blues (Part II), respectively. This resulted in two artistic triumphs but no hits. That didn't deter Nelson and Jennings from hiring Was to produce their album with Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson as the Highwaymen. The Road Goes on Forever is easily the best of the three Highwaymen albums, even if changing radio tastes will probably doom it to the poorest sales of the three. The two earlier releases, 1985's Highwaymen and 1990's Highwaymen 2, were thrown together as if the sheer star power of the four singers could carry the project. Both albums had their exciting moments when everything clicked but both also had a lot of filler. By contrast, Was approached the new recording as if every song and every arrangement had to be good enough to be a single. He picked one obscure but terrific composition from each of the four singers and supplemented them with equally strong material from four of Texas's best songwriters--Steve Earle, Billy Joe Shaver, Robert Earl Keen Jr., and Stephen Bruton. Nelson's harmonica ace Mickey Raphael and Kristofferson's singing buddy Billy Swan are joined by top L.A. session pros like keyboardist Benmont Tench and drummer Kenny Aronoff to create a sound that has the twangy picking of old-fashioned country and the fat bottom of modern pop. The result is an album with everything: first-rate material, grade-A playing, and inimitable singing. The thread that ties Nelson, Jennings, Cash, and Kristofferson together is the crustiness of their voices (a honey-voiced singer like George Jones or Don Gibson would seem out of place in this crowd); when they sing Shaver's "(I'm Going To) Live Forever," they sound as if they're more than halfway there. The Highwaymen are so naturally hard-bitten and world-weary that they can slip a little sentiment into a song without spoiling it. They use this to great advantage on the album's two great outlaw songs, Earle's "The Devil's Right Hand" and Keen's title tune; the gruff tales of violence lead up to a sobering admission of the price paid for such a life. That same gruffness allows the Highwaymen to sing two religious meditations, Jennings's "I Do Believe" and Cash's "Death and Hell," without once sounding sanctimonious. --Geoffrey Himes

This 10th anniversary limited edition includes a DVD containing the music video for "It Is What It Is" and a documentary, Live Forever: In the Studio with the Highwaymen.

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Sonny Landreth's 10-year career as a leader has always seemed tenuous, because he's a one-dimensional singer and only an adequate songwriter. But these 12 numbers run deeper than his previous recordings. Like much of his catalog, they straddle the worlds of blues, Cajun and zydeco, and New Orleans party music, but the blues dominates. And that gives the conflagrant Mississippi-born and Louisiana-raised slide guitarist plenty of fuel. So he burns liberally at every turn, from the acoustic resonator guitar that opens and closes the disc to the percolating funk of "Hell at Home" and the Allmans-like, riff-driven intensity of "Fallin' for You." "A World Away" is this album's tour de force, with Landreth summoning soul from the seldom-used soft side of his voice and slow, moaning guitar lines, whose steel-on-steel cries echo the resigned heartbreak of the lyrics. The CD's sterling production puts Landreth's guitar front and center, which reaffirms the former John Hiatt and Clifton Chenier sideman's instrumental mastery. --Ted Drozdowski

5 out of 5 stars Six Stars? Maybe Eight?.......2006-11-07

The only way Sonny Landreth gets better than this is live in concert. "The Road We're On" has it all: Sonny's unique synthesis of blues, rock, zydeco and that special touch of genius that is pure Sonny. His songwriting reaches a peak that nears perfection, his blues groove is solid and deep, his instrumental breaks are inspired, and it's really cool to hear him on a range of instruments, including a National resonator guitar. Nobody is as innovative stylistically as Sonny, and I think he hit a high point in his career on this one. Just about the only CD that knocks "The Road We're On" out of my player is "Grant Street," and they're both going on my iPod. Buy it. Buy copies for your friends. Give a copy to your mother if she's cool enough to stand it. While you're at it, drop a note to thank Sugar Hill for letting Sonny make records there. This one turned me into a real Sonnyvangelist.

I've heard many slide players and I don't think any of them are better than Sonny. This particular recording has no weak spots: just Sonny laying down some basic blues and stomp, Louisiana-style. You just cannot go wrong with this one. Sonny's style is truly unique, a joy to behold. He is a "National" treasure--check out his steel standard-driven "Jukebox Mama" which finishes the disk. One great tune after another, all guaranteed to get you up and moving.

4 out of 5 stars The Road we're on...come and discover great guitar!.......2006-07-31

Sonny Landreth is an accomplished slide guitarist whose work has spanned several solo projects. Besides that, however, his blues & swamp boogie groove coupled with an underlying tone of some raw rock riffs has allowed him to also gain notoriety with the music world. He's played with John Hiatt, Buddy Guy, and Mark Knopfler among others.

There have been a bevy of blues guitarists come and go in the past 20 years, and despite the staying power of several, it took this listener an accidental stumble through Amazon.com music categories to discover his music. Landreth plays great groove that is soothing and soulful while at the same time adding a darker, deeper feel to his songs that I have not experienced since Jimmy Page's (guitarist for Led Zeppelin, in CASE you didn't know) "Outrider" album.

On "The Road we're on", Landreth plays a no nonsense style of blues that has a modern feel but still an atmospheric presence of some southern swamp who's landscape is only deterred by a gas station and an old dance hall with a broke down pickup out front. I like his style because he's able to embrace an old blues feel but still have some technical prowess thrown in that reminds me of some of the rock guitarists like Eric Johnson. What's fun about this kind of CD to me is that you can play it anywhere..A road trip, the back porch on a summer night Barbequing with friends, or just around the house on any given day. No matter what mood your in, I think Landreth's style of blues will find a place with you no matter what.

I won't cover every track on the album but just touch base with some of the tracks and my opinions of them.

Track one starts off the album with "True Blue" and is a slow, groovy track that evokes a midnight rambler of a tune that has some low sounding bass to it while also of course, having a great lead guitar hitting the high notes. This type of electric guitar approach is technical, but also evoking a "jam" feel, like a bunch of old pals in the back of the club tearing it up on a Saturday night. Landreth's vocals are great, as they are clear and crisp, and though don't come on as raspy or "throaty" as some blues legends of the past, are more of a modern day touch to help balance that old swamp sound.

Track three is "all about you" and kicks off with a rollicking beat that is signature of many songs in the blue's genre. The drums are pretty heavy on this one and Landreth's voice shines on as he tells a simple but satisfying story that rolls along with the guitars.

Track five takes off pretty fast and almost sounds like a "country rocker" out of the gate. "Gone Pecan" is one of my favorite songs by Sonny as its catchy chorus has some fast and fun lyrics that pause before he says, "me and mine, are gone pecan". A second later we're treated to the jam taking off again at full speed and cannot help but smile at the rhythm and overall power of this particular track.

Track six is "Natural World" and is a great written song about the people on earth and the state that the earth is going through. Its not one of those "tree hugger" songs so much as stating that the Natural world changes over time, and its trying to send a message to man, who of course has earplugs in. I'll forgive them if they have headphones on and are just listening to Sonny, but by and by, the song does make a lot of sense. Sound wise this thing is pretty hard rock guitar wise, and we are getting a lot of Edge and Snarl in this. That's okay, because this is the kind of music that does, in my opinion, stand the test of time. Play on Sonny, Move on Mother Earth, continue...

Track ten sounds more like a Jug Band blues ditty starting out before catching a steady beat to ready itself for the rest of the song. Sonny has been knocked a lot by critics for his voice as well as his songwriting, but now I think I know why: Its not because he's a bad songwriter, its because he's that GOOD of a guitar player in his arrangements and execution that we almost get to caught up in the sound of the song and not enough with the themes and songwriting that are woven within. "Gemini Blues" is a great blues-rock track that is another gem on this album.

12 Tracks in all, "The Road We're On" was released in 2003 and though it does not have the diversity and power of his 2005 release "Grant Street Live", its still a great studio album in its own right. Sonny to me showcases much better "blues rock" to me than many that are out there, and I think its because of his ability to play a variety of "blues" mixed in with some Rock and Roll. Soulful sounds also abound with his slide guitar that grooves and grinds till the snakes go back into the water of the swamp. From Robert Johnson to Eric Johnson, and Skynyrd to Seger, if you like some good old-fashioned guitar with some new fashioned sound thrown into the mix, please check out this CD as well as "Grant Street Live" by Sonny Landreth. Great music that will fill any void, but not foil any mood.

I understand that this recording was nominated for a grammy award in 2003 , what I don't understand is how any album could have been chosen over this ! Great mix of styles , but the blues guitar is what cuts it here ... Sonny is the MAN!

5 out of 5 stars A style of his own.......2006-01-25

I agree with the reviews written below; this CD is an improvement on previous Landreth efforts and what I really like about this guy is his unique blend of blues, rock, cajun and zydeco. Yet the sound is his own; his lyrics are intelligent and the sound is passionate and engaging. This isn't any copycat sound; but the work of a true musical artist and genius. My only critique is that there are times when his vocals are drowned out by the music. But this is a small criticism of music that sounds fresh and reveals something new everytime you listen to it. Geez, I'd like to see this guy perform live!

5 out of 5 stars Now THAT'S what I call Country!!!.......2006-07-27

Very few people believe that I am a fan of country music because I'm rarely ever found listening to it. That's mainly because I find so much country music nowadays unimaginative, redundant and just plain boring. One paradigm I have long held onto is that great country music (just like great blues music) sounds like something you could imagine playing yourself on a back porch.

There are probably music purists who could pigeonhole my tastes into one aspect of country music (bluegrass or hillbilly, say), but I contend that my tastes are simply for Country Music.

With all of that said, it seems a shame to say that one of my all-time favorite country albums comes from a conglomeration of members from bands often categorized and punk and rockabilly. X and The Blasters are also bands I am quite fond of, so when I found out that members of both joined together to do some old country-blues tunes and even revise a little X, I was all over that record like white on rice.

This is fun music. Too much country nowadays just isn't fun, or if it pretends to be fun, it does so with a sour pretention of acting like everyone should act this way, but The Knitters nailed an album here that has such a come-along, sing-along feel, that I feel shame that the CMAs haven't nailed a copy of this album to the procemium of every awards show as a reminder of where the REAL heart of country music lay.

This is a great collection of songs. Songs about heartache or jail sung in a way that sounds genuine, not pretend. Like true country music, or the blues, songs of despair sit next to songs of love and joy. These are the emotions of life, told through charming and direct performances. Some of my favorites here are the title track (roadkill as a metaphor for life), Walkin' Cane, and if you aren't slapping your knee during Call of the Wreckin' Ball, you just don't have a pulse.

An added note: whenever I play The Kniters' version of "Rock Island Line," my 8 year-old can't help but just dance around the kitchen table. That's my hillbilly boy!

1 out of 5 stars At last! An X album I DON'T like!.......2006-02-07

Here I thought they were infallible and they go do this one-off "ner ner" music that inspires intimate thoughts regarding blood relations and livestock. I played it backwards and not only did I sober up, but my wife came back to me, my dog came back to life, my truck got fixed, the bank took the lien off my house and I bowled a perfect game!

Signed,

this band is great both live and on cd. the songs get in your head and haunt you. they are all hillbilly bluegrass inspired and they mean all the more if you are a john doe and exene fan or a dave alvin fan or a fan of the 80's hollywood punk scene. Hear john and exene mention l.a. band cohorts the rhythm pigs. hear the tearful songs of broken hearts made all the more poignant by the fact that they were breaking up their long time marriage. its an incredible timeless cd. buy it.

I rememebr i had a tape of this album way back in the mid eighties so when i saw it on cd i decided to give it another try, a i was not disapponted at all. It's nice hearing a bunch of punks goin country cause what you get it's not nashville stuff but a sort of strange mix of what was later to be know as americana. Great stuff and funny too, really worth listening

5 out of 5 stars Just one of those albums..........2005-08-13

You think it's one of those records that you buy to round out your collection of X and Blasters and lo and behold it is one you can't remove from rotation. Poor Little Critter of the Road, Wrecking Ball, Silver Wings are songs that immediatly come to mind when I'm driving on the highway, at a county fair, and am waiting in an airport. I've owned the vinyl since it first came out, and it's still in the stack I play every third Sunday (don't ask).

Just saw the Knitters on Jay Leno last night and they blew my mind, again, John Doe and Exene's killer vocals on top of Dave Alvin's guitar is a classic American roots sound. (I've given up Rock/Abilly/Bluegrass/Country/Blues/Ragtime/Folk distinctions because so many artists have blurred the boundaries. I think "American roots" is the best description of this genre.)

There's a softness to the sound that implies the praries, a twang that implies the south and a desert sensibility that makes you want to install it as the theme tracks to your Airstream as you drive out of Las Vegas into the desert, leaving behind the bright lights, your love, and any hope of water.

3 out of 5 stars +1/2 -- Misproduced shoulda-been cap to supergroup's catalog.......2006-01-06

Waylon, Willie, Cash and Kristofferson met for this third and final collaboration in 1995, and given their proven chemistry, the presence of producer Don Was, and an outstanding selection of material, this should have been the supergroup's ultimate statement. Unfortunately, Was mired the quartet in modern arrangements that were at odds with the their aging, world-weary vocals, and have aged poorly in the intervening decade. The material often outshines the performances, with contemporary Texas classics from Earle, Shaver and Keene failing to find compelling new ground here. The artists connect most fully on their own compositions, including Jennings' gruff balance of faith, responsibility and self-determination, "I Do Believe," Cash's florid story of a visit with a New Orleans' prostitute, "Death and Hell," and Kristofferson's crufty "Here Comes That Rainbow Again."

This tenth-anniversary reissue's must-buy value is derived from the five acoustic demo bonus tracks. Listening to the legends audition songs for their compadres gives one an inkling of the album that could've been. "Live Forever" finds Cash tapping his foot as Nelson picks along to find his part, and Jennings' "I Ain't Song" is interrupted by Kristofferson's gut-busting laugh as the former sing-speaks "I ain't old and I ain't bitter, and I ain't mad at anyone." Kristofferson bangs out "Closer to the Bone" on his guitar as Cash's baritone resonates underneath, and Nelson turns "Pick up the Tempo" into a singalong. There's magic in these interpersonal relationships, it just didn't turn up on all the studio tracks. 3 stars for the original album, but an extra half-star for the bonus tracks. This album from a package tour of Hightone labelmates sounds less like highlights from individual artists and more like a working band. Veteran road warriors Bill Kirchen, Redd Volkaert, Dallas Wayne, and Joe Goldmark join forces (with Kirchen's rhythm section) for some hard-twanging roadhouse interplay. They trade licks on the likes of Volkaert's "She Loves Anything That Swings" and vocals on the album-opening "Truck Drivin' Man," one of three studio tracks from the otherwise live collection. The set ends, as every Kirchen performance must, with an extended revival of "Hot Rod Lincoln" from his Commander Cody days, with the guitarist paying encyclopedic tribute to dozens of idols from Jimi Hendrix to Johnny Cash. Wayne plumbs the depths of barroom misery on a couple of ballads--his own "The Stuff Inside" and Johnny Paycheck's "In Memory of a Memory"--while steel guitarist Goldmark shows a playful eclecticism on "Wacky Walk." The results are better than a tour souvenir, though not quite the same as being there. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff, really expanded my horizions.......2007-05-30

This disk really helped me develop a love for honky tonk music. Both Redd and Dallas have taken a permanent position in my musical collection. If you don't like this disk you are too set in your ways, because these guys are among the best at what they do.

And by the way, this is a really fun disk as well. Just a great attitude throughout.

4 out of 5 stars Uneven CD.......2006-06-29

The song, Hot Rod Lincoln, alone is worth the price of the CD. That guy is a master at the guitar, and listening to him play just about every genre of music is amazing.
However, the rest of the CD is not so amazing. There are a couple of songs I like, but mostly they are just OK.

4 out of 5 stars Country/rock/roots supergroup live!.......2002-02-20

This quartet of road-warriors has put quite a few miles on their collective tires. Bill Kirchen, initially a member of Commander Cody's Lost Planet Airmen, has become renowned as the prime purveyor of Dieselbilly -- a combination of roots rock and country, hauled on the road with a trucker's perspective. Redd Volkaert has a day job as one of Merle Haggard's Strangers, and moonlights as a hotshot Telecaster player. Dallas Wayne is a Missouri native whose honky-tonk is simply too country for a radio market that only pays lip service to Haggard and George Jones. Joe Goldmark is a steel player who, in addition to classic country sides, has taken on everything from African Highlife to The Beatles.

With so many singer/guitarists in the band (rhythm support comes from Kirchen's regular road partners, bassist Johnny Castle and drummer Jack O'Dell), the club stage provides enough room for each to stretch out. Instrumentals like Goldmark's "Wacky Walk" and Volkaert's "Telewacker," along with extended rave-ups of "I Got a Rocket in My Pocket" and Kirchen's trademark "Hot Rod Lincoln" give the band a chance to trade off lead guitars and vocals. The latter, cutting a not-too-shabby ET of 9'22", provides an encyclopedic tour through the riffs of Johnny Cash, Duane Eddy, Roy Orbison, Johnny Rivers, Marty Robbins, Buck Owens, Merle Travis, Merle Haggard, Bob Wills, Maybelle Carter, Flatt & Scruggs, The Ventures, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Speedy West, Leon McAuliffe, James Jamerson, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Jaco Pastorius, Link Wray, Alvino Rey, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Freddie King, B.B. King, Albert King, Ben E. King, Pee Wee King, Scotty Moore, Eric Clapton, Deep Purple, Keith Richards, The Beatles, The Monkees, Sex Pistols, and Jimi Hendrix!

Each player takes a spin in the spotlight, reprising songs from their individual catalogs. Though each has a distinct style, their songs blend beautifully as a band, with Johnny & Jack's rhythm work providing the continuity that holds it all together. The selections from other's pens, including Terry Fell's "Truck Drivin' Man," Blackie Farrell's "Rockabilly Funeral," Johnny Paycheck's "In Memory of a Memory" and Willie Nelson's "I Gotta Drunk" show off the band's heritage and collective ears for great songs.

There's no doubt that the Springfield, MO crowd at this show had a great night of dancing and drinking, but the home listener shouldn't feel cheated: recordist and mixer Lew Whitney caught most of the energy (if not the drinks) on tape. The resulting CD presents one fine night of electric roots music.

5 out of 5 stars Pub rock's highpoint.......2005-07-16

Having found more original footing than their earlier attempts at CSN&Y styled folk-rock, Brinsley Schwarz made good on the roots-rock promise of pub rock with their fourth album, "Nervous on the Road." Nick Lowe dominates the 1972 album's songwriting credits, and though he went on to greater fame as a pure popster, he may never have authored such a singularly solid collection of songs. Ian Gomm and Bob Andrews each kick in for one apiece, with Gomm's excellent 50s-styled "It's Been So Long" taking the opening slot. Lowe's songs range from the twangy blue title song to organ-lined soul and country ballads. The album's covers are perfect fits, including a slightly ragged take of Chris Kenner's "I Like It Like That" and Ronnie Self's rockabilly "Home in My Hand." In a sense, Brinsley Schwarz showed itself to be the UK analog of Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen - a band whose roots took in country, soul, funk and early rock and strained them all through a really good time.

BGO's two-fer also includes the band's sixth (and final) release, 1974's "The New Favourites of Brinsley Schwarz." Lowe's original vision of "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding" opens with some overly aggressive percussion, but the laid-back vocal (and the chorus harmonies) give the song a tone very unlike the subsequent Elvis Costello cover. Once again Lowe's songs dominate the set list, but seem to cut a less-inspired middle-ground between the rootsy invention of "Nervous" and the quirky pop breakthrough of 1978's "Jesus of Cool." Most satisfying is the band's funky cover of the Hi Records (by way of Otis Clay and O.V. Wright) classic "Trying to Live My Life Without You." Overall, the album's production feels crowded, with instruments and voices fighting for space. The balance that was found on "Nervous" seems to have been lost; apparently producer Dave Edmunds still hadn't completely figured out Spector's wall of sound.

Nervous: 5-stars. New Favorites: 3-1/2 stars.

"Nervous on the Road" is the only essential album by this group. Their first album sounded like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young or someone--an unpleasant thing indeed. "Despite It All" has some decent country-rockin' tunes; "Silver Pistol" is all right but just about ruined by too much organ. "New Favourites" is their attempt at soul-music-lite, I suppose, and they don't do a half-bad job on the Hi Records classic "Trying to Live My Life Without You." "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding" is a great song but Elvis Costello did it far better. But it is basically an English version--as is pub-rock in general--of music done much better by Americans, which I believe the perpetrators themselves would readily admit. However, "Nervous" does add a certain pawky humor to the basic r&b/soul/country template; no American artist would have started out a song, as does Nick Lowe, by asserting that he is "scumbag bound." And for once, the keyboardist doesn't overpower the music, leaving room for Mr. Schwarz to indulge himself with his very best Robbie Robertson imitations. They confuse the lyrics on Chris Kenner's "I Like It Like That" and bring in some pretty amusing astrological stuff on "Don't Lose Your Grip on Love." In general, "Nervous" works where most Brinsley Schwarz and pub-rock doesn't because it contains an undercurrent of something real, something very post-'60s, rueful but funny, and the unpretentiousness of its models suggests a way out of hippiedom, which of course is satirized in "Peace Love and Understanding." But as an American, I hardly see how most "pub-rock" is an improvement on the real thing; makes you ponder how the rock and roll era obscured American music like Otis Clay while upholding dreck like Jethro Tull or Yes as worthwhile stuff, and why it took English musicians to hip us to what we were doing in our own country.

4 out of 5 stars The best of pub rock and early Nick Lowe.......1999-07-20

This CD combines two of the best Brinsley Schwarz albums and ("New Favourites") the best produced. The Brinsleys always were at their rocking sexiest live ("Down in the Dive") and the numbers they played best are here ("Feel a Little Funky", "Surrender to the Rhythm"). Watch out for Nick Lowe's "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding", often wrongly attributed to Elvis Costello. I can hear the Brinsleys now rehearsing it in the basement of the Hope & Anchor, Islington. It's summer outside, I've got my first pint and about two hours to enjoy before the gig begins...
