A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

5 out of 5 stars Solid Follow-Up to Shine Like It Does.......2002-08-08

      No sophomore jinx here.

"Longshot" shouldn't disappoint anyone who fell in love with Rose's first offering. Among the best on this release is "Good Man," in which Rose uses the poetry of everyday life to make new that same old story of a woman who can't quite give up on a man who doesn't deserve her. The difference here is that this woman isn't living in a dream world. Yes, she would live in a dream world and lie to herself if only she could, but she knows all too well that her lover will never change his ways. And it's exactly because she knows him for who he is that we know her love is real.

"Good Man," like much of Rose's music, draws upon the perspective of a no-nonsense blue-collar up-bringing. There's no smooth coat of varnish to pretty-up these songs. But neither is there the usual artificially applied layer of pseudo-sophisticated cynicism either. About life as it is really lived--with joys and heartbreaks intermingled and sometimes indistinguishable--Rose shows plenty of wit, fortitude, and subtle insight.

      5 out of 5 stars Completely Brilliant!.......2002-05-05

What a stroke of luck! I discovered Eileen through The Rookie soundtrack (bad film, great album) and now I just can't get enough. She has such a beautiful voice. And what a songwriter. Deeper and more wonderful than Ryan Adams or any of the other new pretenders. Really, you have to try it.

5 out of 5 stars Long shot? not any more............2002-04-02

This is a great album full of soul and life from a woman described by Borderline in London as ".....waifish, vulnerable.... bruised but unbroken. Eileen Rose is tattooed, fearless in song, sheer, sensual and true." This CD gets close to her live performances but still cant do true justice to the voice and ambience of her live gigs. Buy this album if you want to be captivated entertained and to be left wanting more from the 'new' queen of melancholy ..... This is one of those collections of songs beautifully rendered that just grows and grows on you.......

An undeniably distinct collection of 11 original songs from Vermont singer/songwriter Patti Casey, ranging from bluegrass to Appalachian to new folk. All strings and vocals, with simple, well-conceived instrumental accompaniment and fine vocal harmonies, laying a solid background for showcasing Casey's one-in-a-million voice.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable for All.......2002-10-15

I was first introduced to Patti by her son who happens to be in my daycare. I love this CD! We listen to it all the time even when he isn't at daycare. The kids love it and the teachers love it too. We can listen to it a few times in a row and not get bored! It is a great mix of toe tapping folk and soulful ballads. My personal favorites are Dogwood Blue and Old Man. If you love simple, straightforward, honestly good music check out Patti Casey.

5 out of 5 stars A Voice to Die For!.......2001-06-19

      Patti Casey: listen and marvel.

Beyond a wonderful voice, Casey has been composing songs that speak in the folk tradition. And her band is extremely effective, never taking center stage from the singer. Oh, to be in Vermont and hear this group live!

This CD is surprising for its emotional richness. It is good to hear a young singer moving so surely along the paths of country music. With her voice, and her song writing talents, I begin to wonder to myself whether Patti is a relative of Hank Williams. Or is there a Vermont branch of the Carter family?

5 out of 5 stars great music, lyrics that haunt..........2000-12-15

The first thing that strikes me about this recording is the voice, clear, lovely, conveying great feeling. Then I listen to the lyrics. Patti Casey is no diarist; the themes here are sometimes dark, sometimes loving, but never superficial or obvious. Some of the phrases haunt me weeks later. Musicianship is impeccable throughout, and the songs are all well crafted. A truly impressive CD.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to find tracks from top vocal trio.......2007-07-02

I was overjoyed to find this compilation. Prior to this I could only find a couple of tracks from the Pioneers in various artists' compilations. I definitely recommend this CD to anyone who loves early reggae from the late 60s to early 70s. It'll be an eye opener to anyone who thinks all reggae is slow. This one's fast and it'll get you on the dancefloor! If you can't get the original "Longshot" album which is now almost impossible to get, run out and buy this one. If you're a collector like me, it's worth it just for the amazing track "Reggae Beat." Also the reviewer before me was kind of hard on the 70s roots reggae period but in my opinion, the true reggae fan knows that there's good and bad stuff from every period of of Jamaican music. Even in the so called "golden period" of 1967-1970,there's stuff that's not so great. That's why I tell people that I love all the eras of Jamaican music from the Stranger Cole ska days through the Alton Ellis type rocksteady era, the ganja clouded period of the 70s and into the digital era of the 80s to 2000s with guys like Elephantman, it's all good! You just gotta know what you want and keep an open mind!

5 out of 5 stars Never Mind the C**P from the 70's.......2005-01-09

I think I have heard it before that the JAMAICAN MUSIC from the 70's is the best. BLAH < BLAH < BLAH! It's so sad that most people only relate JAMAICAN MUSIC to the OVER-BLOWN natty dread jah-drenched stuff from the middle to late seventies. Early JAMAICAN music is totally killer and as an avid fan of SKA/ROCK STEADY and EARLY REGGAE, I can attest to the fact that anyone who dismisses the early stuff is a total SNOB and has no real love for JAMAICAN MUSIC. Even BOB MARLEY started out with SKA and I'm into that period more than the 70's POT-SMOKIN' drenched period. I know that I may have offended or hurt someone's feelings, but you know what, welcome to the world of criticism. ENJOY THIS MUSIC. PERIOD!

4 out of 5 stars Great tunes from one of the best groups of the late sixties.......2002-07-23

The Pioneers are one of my favorite vocal groups of the rocksteady/early reggae era. They got their start around '66 recording for the Caltone label before moving to Jo Gibb's Amalgamated label, which is where this disc starts off.

If you've read the previous reviews on Amazon you know that this disc is heavily weighted to the 1968-72 era. This is considered a weakness by the others but I feel this is the best material from the group, before they left their Jamaican musical tendencies for the "pop" angle over in England. This is where all good reggae artists go wrong (i.e. Desmond Dekker). Get this disc, if you like the oldies you'll love this one!

        2 out of 5 stars Old songs.......2002-03-09

These songs apart from just a few on this cd are the old versions that the Pioneers sung in their early days. The Pioneers went on to produce astounding albums with songs like 'destiny', 'A little bit of soap', 'freedom train' 'Papa was a rolling stone' etc that made the 70s years to remember. we never owned a record player but our neighbours did and boy these were great songs that we proudly sung along. I recall teaching my classmates (at Rusangu Secondary school, Zambia) these songs. I did buy this cd in a cd store while visiting in Washington DC but was very dissapointed. I would never recommend it to anyone. It is however heartening to note that effective March 19th 2002 there is an anthology cd being produced. Cannot really tell what kind of songs will be on it but if it will have some of the songs highlighted above then it is bound to be a hot seller. I personally will be willing to take the risk by ordering it even before it is released because I simply love this group. If the release of this cd is an answer to our past numerous cries I wish to thank Amazon and all those involved in its production. That is the way to go - customer is always right!

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to Jamaica's great crossover singles group.......2001-10-28

Although the Pioneers enjoyed more consistent chart action in their home country than nearly any other act in the 1960s and first half of the 1970s, they have been largely forgotten. The CD revolution has resulted in relatively little reissue action in spite of a string of fine albums to their credit. To add insult to injury, a search for them on Amazon yields mostly the Sons of the Pioneers.

The Pioneers are one of the classic male vocal trios whose work spanned the rock steady and reggae periods. For most of their career and all of this disc, they consist of founding member Sidney Crooks with Jackie Robinson and Desmond Dekker's younger half-brother George Dacres aka Agard.

Like any long-running Jamaican act, the Pioneers worked with most of Jamaica's well-known producers. This particular set starts with their productive stint with Joe Gibbs in 1967. This means rock steady which by the Pioneers receives a particularly upbeat interpretation. The group moved to the legendary producer Leslie Kong for their signature tune "Long Shot Kick de Bucket" which was actually a textual reference to an earlier (and less memorable) hit. This track is deservedly a classic with its sexy bass-heavy rhythm--one of rock steady's absolute finest moments and probably among Kong's finest dozen productions. They cut a string of superb singles under the tutelage of Kong, the partnership ending with the producer's untimely death in 1971. By this time the Pioneers had relocated to the United Kingdom where they tweaked their sound for a more pop reggae orientation. After Kong's death, the Pioneers relied upon their own talents for production and produced a fine string of albums mixing self-penned material with excellent covers (e.g. "Papa Was a Rolling Stone", "I Need Your Sweet Inspiration", "Jamaica Jerk Off"). They also cut fine versions of classic British bubblegum soul tunes such as Cooke-Greenaway's "Pony Express." And they always served up a consistent dose of their own reggae.

This set is weighted heavily toward their 1967 to 1972 period, a shame since they produced so many great sides after that time. And while the collection is strongly tilted toward their original tunes (all but four tracks), it includes a few of their exploitive early sides that copied their predecessors too slavishly and certainly should not have been included. The Pioneers' work as interpreters deserves a better demonstration. As with some other Trojan anthologies, the sound reflects an occasional inability or disinclination to locate original tape masters.

As an introduction the Pioneers, this set is a must. Hopefully somebody will assemble a companion anthology that draws from their mid to late 1970s albums where the Pioneers' formidable pop instincts shine so brightly. But when it was time for them to contribute to the roots reggae sound, they buckled down for 1978's masterful "Pusher Man." Better yet, Trojan should just reissue all of the Pioneers' albums in their original form perhaps on a "two-fer" format.

5 out of 5 stars A great anthemic punk album!.......1999-11-04

I thought this was a great album! One that will be looked back upon as a true punk classic ala Sham 69's "That's Life". Great melodies ans sing along choruses! If you buy one streetpunk album this year, I'd say this should be it.

          Album Description

On her new album of jazz standards, multi award-winning Vermont vocalist/songwriter Patti Casey takes off her bluegrass duds and strolls down Tin Pan Alley. It's a sultry slowdance stroll, with Paul Asbell's sparse, splendid guitar accompaniment and plenty of space left to luxuriate in this woman's lovely voice.
