Product Description

Deeper Blue shows Kohala’s evolution while influences of folk, jazz, and life in Hawaii continue to serve as a foundation and musical inspiration for the three members of this Big Island acoustic guitar trio: GRAMMY Award-winning Charles Michael Brotman, Charlie Recaido, and new member Rupert Tripp, Jr.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Deeper Blue .......2006-09-16

One of my very favorite memories is a trip I took to Hawaii several years ago. With the very first note of DEEPER BLUE I was instantly transported back to the white sands and gently breaking waves, sipping fresh pineapple juice; without a care in the world. With this exquisite CD, Kohala (pronounced Ko-hall-ah) is able to transport listeners to an auditory world that is pure and natural in its beauty. Influences of folk, jazz and life in Hawaii continue to serve as the foundation and musical inspiration on this seventh release by the guitar trio whose members include Charles Michael Brotman, (who, in 2005, won the first Grammy Award given for Hawaiian music - Best Hawaiian Music Album) handling the melody on nylon string classical guitar; Charlie Recaido; and newest addition, Rupert Tripp, on steel strings. The title track is sublime - a gorgeous melody and dazzling guitar work make this one of the album's standout cuts. "Samba del Sol" follows and once again we are treated to impressive finger work in a delightful piece of music. With some lively percussion added to the mix, "Lime Twist" is another favorite. It's breezy and lighthearted and guaranteed to make you feel good all over. "The Wish" showcases the beauty of simplicity, highlighting the radiance of "less is more." Like the pristine beaches of the Hawaiian Pacific itself, DEEPER BLUE sparkles, charms and casts an unwavering spell that you'll never want to break free of. ~ BETH LEWIS

If Townes Van Zandt is known at all, it may be only for writing the Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard hit "Poncho and Lefty" a decade back. But the voice and music of this care-worn country-folk veteran (who passed away in January 1997) connotes something more sublime. With his warm folkways and dark ruminations, Van Zandt is like a lost wanderer who can link generations of songwriters, from Woody Guthrie to Nick Cave. On No Deeper Blue, his first studio release in seven years, Van Zandt strings a trail of small and intimate folk-blues numbers that lead us down paths both empty and bright. With "The Hole," a ghost story works as a metaphoric battle with personal demons, whether they be alcohol or depression; in "Billy, Boney and Ma," the graveyard tale takes a comic turn. Songs like the poetic "Hey Willy Boy" and the whimsical "If I Was Washington" build on simple folk conceits and wordplay, while others such as "Goin' Down to Memphis" make effective use of the basic blues form. If, perhaps, the thin, dry voice of the Texan troubadour has limited Van Zandt to being a cult songwriter instead of a recording star, it is that same quiet and understated vocal delivery that adds weight and dignity to his tunes. He's living proof the songs of yesterday's ramblers hold their mystery and charm through the years and despite changing musical fashions. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars Back From the Desert.......2001-06-08

I guess all those years on the road and hard living seemed to have taken their toll. His range has dimished, his voice cracks. He sounds brittle, dry as kindling. Prematurely old some would say, but others would argue that Townes Van Zandt was always ahead of his time.

Lyrically speaking he's as sharp as ever. Think of this one as a kind of comeback record after years of wandering the desert with nothing but amnesia and a bottle of gin for company.

Next to woeful classics likes "Tecumseh Valley" or " Waiting Around To Die", "Marie" has to be one of the bleakest & most heartwrenching songs Van Zandt has ever penned. "If I Were Washington" shows he hasn't lost his sense of humor while, " Billie Bones & Ma" coupled with "The Hole" rank as two of the oddest & most grotesque songs in his formidable catalog. Each unforgettable in their eerieness.

"Katie Belle Blue", " A Song For" & " Lover's Lullabye" are ample proof there's more than a few ballads left in him. " Blaze's Blue" is a fitting tribute to friend and fellow songwriter, Blaze Foley. Like Townes, a troubled soul who's end came too soon.

As far as I can gather, NO DEEPER BLUE is the last record of original material Townes laid down before his death. In light of his erratic output throughout the 80's, it serves as a more than decent final word.

Still, despite my enthusiasm, I wouldn't recommend this one as a fitting introduction to his work. You're much better starting off with REARVIEW MIRROR,or some of his earlier fare. For those well acquainted, this one's kind of special. The scars may show, but he hasn't lost it.

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......1999-02-28

I submitted a review of this CD a couple of months ago but it never saw the light of day. This is a GREAT album folks, full of pain and joy and life lived hard and well.

Townes Van Zandt was a great poet and a great spirit and the world is a poorer place for his passing.

My favorite tune on this one is "Cowboy Junkies Lament."

Ah, Townes. Thanks, man, for singing for us.

Album Description

This is an eclectic mix of music -- at times, blues, jazz, southern rock, country, funk & even folk. Often times it's a mixture of all these styles which makes up the sound of the music of Blue Mother Tupelo. There's something on this disc for everyone who loves music with soul. Great female/male vocal interplay and harmonies as well as outstanding guitar which all intermingles with sharp production. The musical journey on this disc will take you through the sounds and vibes of the American South while capturing life's experiences in its songs. This is truly a solid, wonderful album from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Good get down music!.......2002-03-08

This is a great CD! I'm so happy that I ran across it here. The jams are tight & loose at the same time. Good swampy stuff and downright soulfull. I'll be keeping my eyes out for anything else Blue Mother Tupelo comes out with. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves music that jams with a southern Mississippi/swampy Louisiana/high lonesome Appalachian mountain combination. And their other CD rocks too ... I've got them both! What a band! 5 stars!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I love it!!!!.......2001-10-04

What a refreshing CD! I really love the down & dirty grooves throughout this CD. All of the songs are powerful and full of emotion from beginning to end. This is a must-have CD for anyone who loves real downhome tunes from the blues to bluegrass - it makes you want to boogie as well as reflect on life itself. 5 stars indeed!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Eh?.......2007-06-25

I am a blues musician and a PURIST which means that my idea of the blues is a tad old-fashioned. You baby boomer blues fanatics and musicians know what I mean. Bruce Katz is very gifted but young and he is adulterating the real blues into something else. He does what all the younger "blues" musicians are doing now-bastardizing it with jazz inflections. I flinched every time he would get jazzy. Jazz and blues are two entirely different genres. That is controversial but simply what I believe. I thought that this CD would be pure blues but it's not. Too bad....he is really talented. He needs to leave the old time REAL blues alone and just do the new age jazz instead of mixing it up and advertising this CD as a blues CD.

McCoury grabs songs from a variety of sources and molds them all into traditional-bluegrass shape. Assisted by his sons Rob (banjo) and Ronnie (mandolin), the elder McCoury moves from Lefty Frizzell and Willie Nelson to Bill Monroe and 1930s bluesman Leroy Carr. Tight group harmonies and ensemble picking form the foundation while McCoury's wailing voice combines the high lonesome sound of mountain music with the inflections of a blues singer. The instrumental "Quicksburg Rondezvous" displays the band's hot-picking prowess while the gospel "I Know His Voice" features sensitive support from Ronnie's mandolin and aching vocals from his father. --Marc Greilsamer

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars One of Del's Best.......2003-12-03

Del McCoury and his band are one of the best acts in the bluegrass world today. Although many bluegrass musicians are being overproduced to the point of losing their powerful edge, no studio can dull the razor sharp blade that is Del's voice. This is one of my favorite albums by Del and the boys and features the same band he has today, including Del's two sons. Del especially shines on songs such as "What Made Milwaukee Famous.." where he showcases his high-lonesome achingly beautiful twang on this country classic.

5 out of 5 stars Oh what an unique voice that Del McCoury has and what a cd.......1999-08-21

Anyone who has ever listened to Del McCoury will never forget that voice. The band plays some of the bluest of blues songs that are soul stirring and gut wrenching. With every pick, strum, pluck, or pull, the music is awesome. This is one of the best rainy day and lonesome bluegrass cds I've ever listened to. This is a must for bluegrass lovers.

    5 out of 5 stars Powerful Bluegrass!.......1999-07-09

The Del McCoury band is the finest band in the oldtime bluegrass tradition on the market today. This album showcases, as usual, awesome instrumentals and fine covers by Del and his two sons. Ronnie is perhaps the best bluegrass mandolin player in the business and this is the album where he really comes into the forefront of the bands "modern oldtime" sound.

For their sixth full-length, Black Tape for a Blue Girl offer up their most atmospheric and orchestral work to date. Picking up where 1993's This Lush Garden Within left off, composer and keyboardist Sam Rosenthal and company execute a dark, moody, and emotion-drenched series of ambient soundscapes brought to life by Oscar Herrera's powerful vocals and the stirring string duo of Vicki Richards (violin) and Mera Roberts (cello). Typical of Black Tape's albums, Remnants' lyrics deal mostly with passionate--indeed, often overwrought--manifestoes about love and honesty, but what lingers in the memory is the stark beauty of the music, nowhere more evident than on the disc's 26-minute opus, "For You Will Burn Your Wings upon the Sun." A textural marvel, it rises on the wings of Richards's haunting violin and swoops down to perch on Rosenthal's gloomy, muted ambiance before taking flight again amid an epic symphony of neoclassical bombast. Worth it for this track alone. --Steve Landau

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Underrated.......2004-06-26

I think this is one of the more underrated albums of the 90s. This is because they're pretty unhip to listen to, as most people (rock critics) view them as bombastic, moping goths. I'll have to admit that, yes, they can get pretty maudlin at times (which is why I gave it four-stars). However, the strength of this album is in the arrangements/composition, coming from mastermind Sam Rosenthal. Most detractors of this album focus on the vocals, but they fail to realize that the majority of this 70-plus minute record is instrumental, or near-instrumental. Of course, if you only listen to, say, Pavement, then you'll probably turn Black Tape off, but if you like moody music with good arrangements (you know, violins, keyboards, next-to-no guitar) try it.

    5 out of 5 stars Why?.......2003-12-06

I still don't really understand why anyone, except a mansonite, would not like this cd. Rather than being an embarassment, as some said, to the music genre, I feel it adds. Yes, I absolutely love Cocteau twins, but unless your trying too hard to be goth, it's a good change in the sense of ethereal.
This album has a very chamber sound, this is strangely contributed by the keyboards. I guess some of the music on the synths would be a little easy to play, but as one musician commented "Keep it simple, stupid."
With that said, I'm not going to tell people they have to hear it because if they don't they aren't cool enough. Instead, I say it's a really good album, but if you don't like it, then shut up and let those who do, like it...
So if you are thinking about buying it, listen to it on your computer, mabey borrow it from someone. What I'm trying to get across is that, don't buy if your not sure. I recomend it to everyone though. There are mixed reviews about this band. I love them personaly.

3 out of 5 stars Not Pure Goth But Not Absolutely Terrible Either........2002-04-14

Black Tape for a Blue Girl is an acquired taste. Old school Goths don't think much of them which I can understand, it's like Black Tape is playing up to the Goth stereotypes but I don't think that's intentional. The group is okay they just gotta stop Sam Rosenthal from singing cause that guy sounds like my cat after I stepped on it's tail by mistake. It's a sound I never want to hear ever ever again. And though I give Sam his props in whatever else he does with the group "Dude don't do vocals!" Don't do vocals ever ever ever again! Whenever I hear Sam's voice on the other Black Tape cd's I just skip the track. When I want to hear a grown man whine, I'll listen to Earth Wind & Fire. They at least sound good. Other than Sammy boy, this cd is pretty good...well okay. Like the tracks when no one is really singing the most.

1 out of 5 stars Remnants of Dignity in Question.......2002-03-08

I, too have read so many glowing reviews of this band Black Tape For A Blue Girl. I was so very excited to find American Gothic bands supposedly in the vein of 4AD. This band sounds like what Circe Nightshade and Azrael might come up with after a weekend on Ex-Lax and near-beer. Maybe not that exciting. If you like drivel, buy it.

    1 out of 5 stars Pure fake.......2002-02-25

Driven by the shipload of 5 stars I bought this CD (actualy I bought 2 taking "advantage" of a combined offer) hoping to get something that could compete with This Mortal Coil, say Cocteau Twins or Dead Can Dance. It doesn't compete at all: it's a pretentious insult to the whole movement!
As one said, pure cliché. On "Mesmerized by the Sirens" some lyrics are in French - I guess because it's a "chique" language - and, living near France, I can assure you that your Spanish is better than this.

I used to wonder why this "frozen beauty" wasn't available in Europe... That seems pretty obvious now.

Roy Roberts likes his blues soulful and laced with horns, and weaves tight, tasty guitar licks throughout this album. For me, the standout track is "Tonight Your Love Belongs To Me", a tender and charged lurve song that showcases his powerful, soulful voice. I find his later offering "Burnin' Love" a sharper and livelier affair; never-the-less, you will dig this disk if you like your blues soulful.
