About the Artist
Runaway Planet was founded in 2001 in Little Rock, Arkansas. The band is: Greg Alexander on guitar, Steve Brauer on banjo, Ben Ellis on mandolin and Michael Proveaux on bass and evolved out of a long-time friendship between members and a mutual love of acoustic music. Since its formation, Runaway Planet has opened for many well-known international touring acts including, but not limited to: Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, The Del McCoury Band, Charlie Robison,The Derek Trucks Band, Iris Dement and Acoustic Syndicate. In May of 2002 and 2004 the band performed at the annual Riverfest Music and Arts Festival. In April of 2003 Runaway Planet played at the Arkansongs Music Festival, a tribute to Robert Palmer, featuring Arkansas roots music. In February of 2002, Runaway Planet was named winner of the 2002 Arkansas Times Musicians Showcase. In April of that year, the band won second place in the Arkansas Acoustic Festival held at the UCA campus in Conway, featuring Nickel Creek. Runaway Planet has been featured on both radio and television throughout Arkansas. The band is especially proud of their work with the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) in helping to produce a documentary film about the First Annual Arkansas Acoustic Festival. In 2003 the band was selected to be a member of the Arkansas Arts on Tour, a program of the Arkansas Arts Council. Known for their musicianship and entertaining live shows, Runaway Planet has established quite a name for themselves. Playing bluegrass favorites and their own foot-stompin' originals, Runaway Planet keeps one foot firmly planted in the past while keeping an eye on the future. Their own style of progressive bluegrass, sometimes referred to as "newgrass", has gained attention from both staunch traditionalists and newcomers alike. Runaway Planet has succeeded in becoming a regional favorite and promises even more great music in the future.

4 out of 5 stars A darn fine first album.......2007-05-07

No Part of Nothin' is a highly accessible album of contemporary Bluegrass. While there is not an official front man to the band and all members participate as songwriter or lead singer at some point, the bulk of the songs were written and sung by guitarist Greg Alexander. Most of the songs have a blend of traditional bluegrass shibboleths and modern day references that combine in a way that is neither self consciously hip nor ostentatiously old fashioned. A song with a title like Burn the Clutch Out seems to epitomize the approach for me. While the musicianship is tight it has an off the cuff vibe that leads you to believe that if the band were to play a song ten times in a row you'd likely hear ten different versions which is one of the things that appeals to me most about the album; the distinct impression that the band would have been sitting around playing these songs whether they were in the studio or on the back porch. No part of nothin' is exactly what this album is. I'm sure these boys are a lot of fun to jam with or maybe even see in person, but the repetetive nature of the banjo player (learn a new lick, will ya?) coupled with some of the weakest mandolin playing I've heard in YEARS leaves me underwhelmed to say the least.

I will say this; their writing is good. Above average actually. Why they decided to record it themselves rather than trying to find interested bands remains a mystery though.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-12-03

If you even remotely like Bluegrass, you need this album. If you love Bluegrass, you DEFINITELY need this album!! These boys from Little Rock definitely know how to bring Bluegrass to the table. This CD is so good that if I were a millionaire, I'd buy a copy for everyone. So, my review is 10 stars. Buy this CD and you'll be singin' along in no time.
