Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

The marvelous voice of Linda Eder takes center stage in her fourth solo album, recorded when the singer was seven months pregnant. Frequently compared to Barbra Streisand for her combination of vocal power and sensitivity, Eder swings ("You Never Remind Me"), is torchy ("Romancin' the Blues"), and even does a good impression of Celine Dion ("Even Now"). Unlike Streisand, however, Eder is strongly associated with a single composer--her husband, pop-Broadway man Frank Wildhorn, whose songs with lyricist Jack Murphy continue to dominate Eder's repertoire on It's No Secret Anymore. Of particular interest here are four songs from the yet-to-be-produced show Havana--a not-surprising combination of bombast, balladry, and Latin dance-pop. Wildhorn's work usually receives mixed reviews, but no question it sounds best when sung by Eder. For unconvinced critics, there is also one non-Wildhorn song on this album, the Arlen-Mercer classic "One for My Baby," that proves that Linda Eder can sing just about anything. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Linda is Superb!.......2006-05-04
Everyone has said everything that could be said about the superb Linda Eder. I have only just received and listened to this, my first Linda Eder CD, and I am on an absolute high. Every song is sung from the heart. I just had to add my few words of support for this lady. Do buy this CD, it is wonderful. Yes, there are 14 cuts but you wish it could go on and on. This will not be my last Linda Eder CD. Well done Linda - may you always be remembered in years to come - you are superb.
Very Good.......2005-02-06
This album is great! I love almost all of the songs on here. I think "Vienna" is my favorite. Linda's voice is so full of feeling. It is remarkable! I definitely recommend it.
Linda Is Great - No Secret Anymore.......2004-02-18
Linda Eder has everything to be a singer who is proud of her own voice and career. She has the voice of clarity, captiveness, commerciality, wiseness, and most importantly, beauty. Besides, she has Barbra Streisand's range. She also has a pretty face (her face ALWAYS reminds me of Shannen Doherty). It was no wonder that when I came across her at Amazon.com I was totally taken. I still remember the time when I was brought to her magical world by a list that put her in. I clicked on this album and simply play the sound sample. And `do you hear what I hear'? I hear a voice which (I know Julie's fan will disagree) even surpasses Julie Andrews' (which is one of the most timeless voice ever). You know, I'm a newbie in Broadway (all I know are Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical theatres and "The Sound Of Music"), but I know that Linda's voice travels and surpasses all genres. So I'm not surprised that at last I bought "It's No Secret Anymore".
At first, I need to adapt from my usual musical liking, pop, alternative, classical, to these Broadway or Swing like songs. But the adaptation doesn't need too much time as Linda's voice make me fall in love with this genre. I'm crazy in love with this album since then and this album stays in my CD player (though it's not only this one. Clay Aiken's "Measure Of A Man" and Sarah McLachlan's "Afterglow" are on my CD player too). All songs are perfectly perfect and the lyrics are far from `cheesy' cathegory.
1. It's No Secret Anymore = The song transforms from a slow song to a fast tempoed Swing song. The lyrics are truly creative and the music is catchy, things that almost all songs here have.
2. You Never Remind Me = In the booklet, Linda says it's her favorite swing cut on the CD. At first I think this one's so-so, but later I labeled this as my favorite too. The lyrics are clever (again) and the music is simple, but captive. This song doesn't really take broad range or ability to sing real fast, but that's the reason that this song is very likeable.
3. Romancin' The Blues = One of the jazziest song in the album. Linda sings `lazily' and the song is very chillin'. The back cover of the album describes this song :-)
4. Havana = One of the hippiest song in the album (NOT the hippiest). HAVANA showcases Linda's hobby, to scream. She screams great, no wonder she loves to scream.
5. Why Do People Fall In Love = This is the first ballad in this album. These kinds of songs really make Linda sounds best.
6. I Guess I Love You = This song can only be written by a genious. The lyrics are truly captive and the music is wonderful. Linda's last line is great. "Just guess !!!"
7. This Time Around = The music is very ballad-like. Well, the lyrics are so-so but Linda always makes it to this song.
8. Looks Like You Started Something = This song talks about everything. From George Washington to Adam and Eve. You may think that it heard strange, but it helps creating the great foundation for the `looks like you started something' stuffs. The best song lyrically.
9. Little Things = The piano and rain-like drum intro makes this song very special. Each little thing makes this song great. "It's the little things...."
10. Even Now = This is the `Barbra Streisand track'. She sings real high notes here (with no head voice, as usual). There are also several parts where the background vocals are really beautiful.
11. Never Dance = The (as they called it) `Ricky Martin track'. Always (want to) dance when it comes to this song.
12. Vienna = This song is the remake of one of her hit from her 1st album. This one also shows her `Barbra Streisand side'. Quite touching.
13. Anything Can Happen = Yeah, great lyrics.....
14. One For My Baby = I always like Mercier's lyrics. No exception for this one.
Linda Eder has `the female voice of the century' so this album worth each track. Listening to Linda's voice is one of the most beautiful and worthy experience I've had. Her voice is God's gift.
Linda's Brilliance Shines Bright.......2003-10-13
Linda Eder's vocal brilliance shines in this CD. She sings the classic pop songs like no other female artist alive today. Her song "Even Now" is a full force anthem. The lively salsa number "Havana" will transport you right into Cuba's 50's hey-day. "Vienna" is a rich, gorgeous tribute to Linda's homeland. This gifted vocalist sweeps you into a wonderfully orchestrated trip on every cut on this CD. Don't miss this one for your collection.
I LOVE LINDA EDER! Linda is AMAZING.......2003-04-06
This is the first Linda Eder CD I have and I can not stop listening to it. Her voice is wonderful, and and range is amazing. I recommend this CD to everyone. She has one of the most beautiful voices in the world. She has become my all time favorite singer. If you want to hear great music by the most amazing singer BUY THIS CD! You won't regret it! She is awesome. I hope one day I'll be able to see her in concert!

Exquisite tenor singing and songs of incredible beauty.......2001-10-02
My acquaintance with Sergei Larin was made through his performances of Verdi, Puccini and verismo works. And I have always been impressed by his beauty of tone and phrasing. It was a nicest surprise to discover that he could offer performances of such level of artistry in the chamber repertoire. This disc alone raised my admiration of Larin, one of the best tenors on operatic stages these days.
First of all, these songs require broader performance most of the time. They are passionate quasi-operatic works with a most evocative and sometimes melancholic atmosphere. Larin pours his heart and soul in these pieces. His tone is honeyed throughout, powerful when it opens up, but he also produce the most extatic soft tones when required. The wide palette of tone colouring is quite helpful to differentiate each song from the others and his care with the text is so amazing that, even if you don't know the text or are not Russian-speaking (as I am not), you won't really miss it, so powerful is Larin's ability to create the right mood. If you have any doubt, you should try "In the Silence of the Secret Night" - a most delightful song.
Last but not least, Eleonora Bekova is the amazing pianist who not only shines in the sometimes virtuosistic piano playing preditably required by Rachmaninov, but also responds sensitively to Larin's singing throughout. A nice example of interplay between admirable musicians.

Bill Gaither's Favorite Homecoming Songs and Performances: It Is No Secret.......2006-01-30
This is my second purchase of this CD. I sent this one to my sister because it reminded me of our childhood and the music we heard then. I have since heard that there are "Bill Gaither" groupies out there and I can see why. This CD is the greatest.

GET OUT OF A BAD MOOD!!!!!!!.......2006-01-17
THIS CD PUTS A SMILE ON MY FACE EVERYTIME I HEAR IT! JUDY KAYE IS A MOST UNDERUTILIZED TALENT ON THE BROADWAY SCENE, AND THIS CD PROVES IT. CLICK THIS RECORDING INTO YOUR CART THIS INSTANT!
Pure Energy.......2000-09-17
What an incredible recording! What energy, what a fantastic voice! The songs, many of which are rarely recorded, are presented in a wonderful upbeat and stylish mood. It's almost impossible not to love this CD. Her tributes to the greats of the silver screen are very witty and yet not overly campy. Judy manages to almost one up Carmen Miranda, with her Carmen Tribute. I must say I never really liked the song "Thanks alot, but no thanks" until I heard Judy's version. This CD will leave you exhausted but with lots of happy memories. It will also leave you wishing that Judy Kaye recorded more often!!
