Rasputina dish up an Alice in Wonderland psychedelia mixed with a Kate Bush sensibility and Medieval-meets-Victorian vibe in both appearance and musicality. The end result on Cabin Fever, Rasputina's sixth overall release since 1993, is charming, if likely too idiosyncratic for mass acceptance. Since Melora Creager (who toured with Nirvana in 1992), formed the band in the early '90s, this New York-bred trio of female cellist-vocalists has opened for Marilyn Manson and Bob Mould, attesting to the diversity and quirkiness of this lineup. On Cabin Fever, from the quavering vocals of "Remnants of Percy Bass" to the revved-up pop-tech stylings of "AntiqueHighHeelRedDollShoes" to moments of music-box delicacy, Rasputina show a penchant for creating wonderful, odd, and old-fashioned vignette-style lyrics and songs. "Quaint" and "enchanting" are not likely words that lead to the cover of Rolling Stone, but that's no matter, as long as Rasputina's considerable and curious charms allow them to invoke more musical magic. --Katherine Turman
Customer Reviews:
No one seems to understand..........2006-01-10
No one knows this but Rasputina is the most simple yet intelligent band in the world. Perhaps I'm biased. However, I feel that Cabin Fever is their best album. In order of preference, I would say that my favorite songs are:
#1-Thimble Island
#2-Clipped
#3-My Orphanage
#4-Hunter's Kiss
#5-AntiqueHighHeelRedDollShoes
People think Thimble Island is about grabbing a man. It is, but if you listen to the lyrics, there is a hint of darkness that suggested to me, this Thimble Island is a place in the afterlife.
"You go there alone/To find someone for to call them your own/I've not heard of girls returning/it is a murky mystery place."
Also, there is definately a watery theme to the album.
It just seems that no one understands the album and the purpose of the musical distortions so well put together and artistic on the the album. THIS IS THEIR BEST ONE!!! I have and LOVE all of their albums. But I truly feel Cabin Fever is the most well-executed.
Not like the two previous ones, but ingenious none the less........2005-09-30
There are only three song on this one that I do not like: State Fair, Antique High Heeled Red Doll Shoes and Cooped, for some reason those songs just really grated on my nerves. Other than that however, I thought that the songs of this album were really great. Although a lot of the other veiwers did not care for Remnants of Percy Bass, I felt that it was a really beautiful. I do understand peoples' dislike for this song though, because the sound of the dulcimer is very unusual. The dulcimer is a very ancient musical instrument, most people aren't even familiar with it's sound unless they have heard Asian music which is why the dulcimer can really take some getting used to for the ears of many westerners.
half and half.......2005-07-24
I'm a Rasputina fan, albeit not a huge one. I don't feel the need to have everything they've ever recorded, but I do have all four LPs and their live album and consider them one of my favorite bands. The problem with Rasputina is that, to my ear, they have a tendency to occasionally, among the brilliance, create songs that are absolutely unbearable.
And so we have Cabin Fever!. This is what I would consider Rasputina's weakest album partially because of this tendency for polarization. It has songs I absolutely love. It has songs I absolutely loathe. More than half the album is very good. But it has more songs I can't stand to listen to than any of their other albums.
But this isn't the only reason I consider Cabin Fever! to be their weakest album. Song-writing aside, this album suffers from having been Rasputina's first independent effort. All the songs on the album would have benefited greatly from re-recording, better mixing, and an outside producer (or a second opinion). The album overall has an unpleasant stringent quality. All the sounds are a little too harsh and hard on the ears for comfortable listening, and I'm not sure that the sound-quality is quite where it should be. My overall impression of the album is that it is frequently nearly cacophonous, and it shouldn't be.
That being said, there are songs on this album that I wouldn't give up for the world, despite some tinniness. The following breakdown is completely biased by my listening preferences, but I think it is indicative of the uneven quality of the album.
Songs I love: SweetWater Kill (The Ocean Song), Hunter's Kiss, AntiqueHighHeelRedDollShoes
Songs I like: Gingerbread Coffin, Thimble Island, Rats, PJ + Vincent & Matthew + Bjork, Our Lies, A Quitter
In between: State Fair*, CrossWalk, Cooped
Songs I can't listen to: Remnants of Percy Bass, Clipped**, My Orphanage
* I've always been torn about State Fair, but especially now since I've fallen so far in love with the Tweaker Remix available on My Fever Broke (which is much less stringent and much catchier), I can't really stand the original.
** What kills about Clipped is that it's the harshness of the recording that could have been fixed that makes me unable to listen to it, not the song itself, which I think could have been really good if it had been recorded differently.
To the Rasputina fan, I would recommend that if you can pre-listen to this album, do so and pick off iTunes the songs you want if you don't care about having the cd packaging. Otherwise, go ahead and buy the album--there should only be a few tracks that disappoint you.
To those who are not already Rasputina fans but are wondering if they should be, don't start here. I would recommend How We Quit the Forest, but it is out of print although available at iTunes. Either download it there or pick up Frustration Plantation instead, provided you keep in mind that the southern influence is characteristic of the album, not the band as a whole. Another good idea would be to grab a couple of tracks from each album off iTunes, which would help you get a better sense of the band's phenomenal range.
Another Awesome Raspy Album.......2005-06-18
I loved every song on this album with the exception of the Bjork joke song. Rasputina doesn't ever dissappoint.
I don't really like this one........2004-11-01
I don't have much to say about it. I listened to it once, and it was too loud, raspy and it hurt my ears at times.
The date thing was hilarious though, and that gives the album 3 stars alone. I laughed my ASS off at that.

This is a hauntingly beautiful CD. I have played it over and over and have never gotten tired of it. I know people who have requested that this music be played at their funerals. A great sound track that brings to mind the struggles of Gus and Woodrow and of course, of us all.

it wasn't very good..........2005-05-14
I personally didn't like it, just my opinion. I don't usually buy soundtracks but the music on this one wasn't very good!
TERRIBLE!.......2005-05-14
OMG, this is really not a very good CD... why would you want to buy a soundtrack for a horror movie anyway? and listen to people talk on it... honestly! It's really a pointless CD and a waste of money!
David Hess is NOT on this CD!.......2005-01-28
A search for David Hess turned up this CD, which he is NOT on. David contributed SIX songs to the Cabin Fever Soundtrack, including the closing credits. Do not buy this CD if you are expecting to hear David Hess music from the film, those songs are available separately from David Hess at his own .com
Awesom Stuff.......2003-09-19
The Cabin Fever soundtrack captures all the fun and insanity that makes the movie such a riot to watch. The soundtrack features a few cool songs from the movie (The Turtleneck's song is hilarious) as well as some well placed dialogue cuts, but for the most part this soundtrack is a show piece for Nathan Barr and Angeleo Badalamenti. Nathan's tracks are great mood pieces that work great with the film and would make great Holloween music if you need some for a haunted house. As far as Angelo's work goes...it's awesome. His stuff is more subtle than Nathan's work and its adds a nice contrast to the other tracks. Some tracks feel like they came straight out of Twin Peaks. Great stuff! I highly recommend this soundtrack!!

Customer Reviews:
Intimacy and Honesty from a Genius.......2006-02-01
I purchased this CD several years ago when it first came out and play it regularly. It feels like Breau is in the room with you. I have never felt such emotion from a jazz recording, it gives me goose bumps with every listening. Also excellent is his Live on Bourban Street disc. I look forward to getting the Living Room Tapes CD in the near future. I don't have much to add to what others have said about Breau's stunning mastery of his instrument. I have been hooked on him since I heard his version of "Mercy Mercy Mercy" on a Guitar Player magazine jazz collection years ago (the cut is on the Velvet Touch cd). I am also a huge fan of the late Joe Pass, whom I was fortunate to see perform late in his career in a small basement club in Annapolis, but there is a shimmering ethereal quality in Lenny's playing that moves me in ways that no other musician does. If you love guitar music, buy this disc.
Stunning, honest and heatfelt ideas from a musical genius.......2003-10-08
When you reach this level of performing, it's hard to say whether one performer is better than another; that's a matter of subjective interpretation. What one can comment on is the level of sophistication as it's applied to technical facilities used during the performance.
In reality, a performance that reaches the deepest levels of a listener is not based solely on technique; it's based on the intuitive ability of the performer to express what's inside, using technique as a springboard through which feelings are communicated.
This is what Lenny was able to accomplish in ways no other guitarist has achieved. In addition to this ability was an astonishing level of technical abilities. Lenny's ability to carry a bass line, comp stabbing three-note cluster chords in the middle register, solo and carry the melody in the upper register, all while improvising moving inner voicings in an astonishing simultaneous four part array of pure notes and harmonics was something no other guitarist has accomplished to date.
Cabin Fever displays the true essence of Lenny's unbelievable abilities better than any release currently available. It's Lenny performing for Lenny, warts and all. The decision was made on this release to simply dump the reel-to-reel to CD without editing it down. It's as though you happen to be listening in on a private moment where Lenny is playing purely for personal satisfaction, and the results are glorious!
Lenny has always been primarily a guitarist's guitarist, but this recording is capable of cracking even the iciest of hearts. Its mood is gentle, lilting, passionate, melancholy, heartwarming, and introspective. For the guitar enthusiast, it's an ego-splitting exploration of what you never thought possible. For the rest of us, it's a moving aural snapshot of the truest essence of Lenny's inner being.
There is nothing that can compare to this disk. I agree with the previous reviewer; there is no performer of jazz on the classical guitar who has reached this level of sophistication, whether it is Joe Pass, Gene Bertoncini, or Charlie Byrd. Lenny Breau is a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon.
The unedited genius of Lenny on solo classical guitar.......2002-01-16
If you like Lenny, this is a must have. If you haven't caught the Lenny bug, listen to this one. It is an exceptionally honest recording, direct to analog tape, Lenny alone in a cabin deep in Canada. His father had just passed away, and this is a tribute to that man, who Lenny had played music with professionally as a youth. It was recorded with the intention of editing it into an LP, but that never happened. Believe me, we are lucky that it was released, all due to the efforts of Randy Bachman (yes, he of the Guess Who and Bachman Turner Overdrive, who learned guitar from Lenny as a peer in Canada). This is the way to do it, unedited, gets you right into Lenny's head. Yes, he was a wonder; warm, brilliant, introverted, incredibly diverse but keeping everything wrapped in a beautiful completeness. The flamenco sections are wonderful, but it all circles back to the grounding of the standards he plays so well. He never sounded so much like Bill Evans. This is the best jazz solo work on a classical guitar I have ever heard by a long shot-beats the tar out of Joe Pass' attempt on the instrument, and he plays circles around Charlie Byrd. This is simply one of the finest solo jazz guitar recordings ever. No, make that jazz guitar recordings period, solo or not. Rest in Peace, Lenny, you were a good man, sorry you had such a rough time of it.

Spending my teenage years in Northeastern Ohio, you'd have had to be living in a cave not to know of the MSB. This album, while only one of many they released, is to me their finest work, with not a dud song on it. My friends and I used to play this several times a day, so this track list is from memory. Mind you, it still sounds fresh. They were so tight and together on this record! Brings back some awesome memories.
MSB Rocks in Wales.......1998-10-22
Perhaps MSB's best album. If the Band struggled to find an "identity" in its 1st two studio albums (although they are still good albums!), this follow-up effort to the "live" Stagepass left no doubt which direction the band was headed: crank-up the amps; they're rockin' on this one. Recorded in Monmouth, Wales, in an old castle (not far from Robert Plant's house) & remixed at Trident Studios in London (where the Beatles recorded "Hey Jude"), the band captures in the studio the sound and excitement they brought to their live performance in Stagepass. Great songs; great guitar; and a great sound on this album.
