5 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic.......2007-05-14

"Living Stereo" was the name of RCA'S highest quality recordings. The three major labels, RCA, Columbia and Capitol all invested large amounts of money and effort to improve, indeed, perfect the new LP stereo recordings of the 1950's. This album presents a good example of RCA's labor and technology. Although some of these songs are generations old and recorded on rather primitive equipment, they still sound great. Thanks to digital technology, these precious gems sound better today than they did when they were first recorded almost 50 years ago. I bought the LP, then the cassette version so I could listen to it in my car as I traveled the Pacific Northwest selling records and tapes to retailers. You will enjoy listening to the harmony of this cowboy classic.

5 out of 5 stars The last round-up.......2007-04-19

As a small child in the early 1960's, I was given an EP of four songs that were originally on the COOL WATER album (these were: "Cool Water," "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," "The Last Round-up" and "Ghost Riders In The Sky"). At the time, I didn't know who the Sons Of The Pioneers were and had never heard any of their music. Long story short-- I LOVED that record. So, many years later, when the opportunity presented itself, I gladly bought the LP.

This early stereo recording (1959) is a marvel. Traditional cowboy songs with a full (yet not intrusive) orchestra. Gorgeous harmonies, classic tunes and excellent sound. COOL WATER is a truly great album that all fans of traditional American music should own. Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars cool water music cd.......2007-01-09

the songs where sung by some of the oldest western singers in the 20th century, such as autry murphy and roy rogers.
the group was called the sons of the pioneers and if you consider that the wild west still was in the early `900's and tombstone still had stages and sherrifs you can see why.
if you truly like REAL country or western music, then sons of the pioneers is for you

5 out of 5 stars Stands Alone In Time & Genres.......2007-01-09

First the history of this album for me, then my impressions of the CD.

As a kid, we'd leave my hometown of Tulsa and make the drive to my Great-Grandparents' home, in the little town of Holdenville, Oklahoma. While the adults hung up coats and fixed lunch and talked and talked and TALKED, I'd race to the back room.

The back room had tinkertoys, a handful of trinkets gathered from local eating establishments, but for me it mainly had a record player and a stack of records.

It didn't take me long to figure out that very little of my Great-Grandparents' music was going to appeal to me; however, among the stack, I found this album. I loved it immediately and played it every time we went to their house.

Years later I inherited that album, but by that time a bad needle had ruiend the recording and none of the digital "tricks" I had could resurrect it.

Fast-forward to today, and the CD arrives!

As you might imagine, I had high expectations for this CD. Not only does it meet my expectations, it completely exceeds it.

First, the songs are of course exactly as I remember. However, it's like a veil has been lifted between me and the performace... this isn't sound in a groove coming from a cone, they're performing in the room! I'd forgotten how irresistable it is to harmonize with them.

The dynamics are at least as wide as on the album, actually wider because there's no "overload" point where it turns to fuzz. Voices truly soar.

The recordings, while focused on the nartually-eq'd voices, are deep, rich, full, clear, crisp and fresh. This is a very well-balanced recording!

O.K, finally, this is a recording from analog tape form 1959... how's the hiss?

ABSENT.

No joke. I like to think I've got pretty sensitive ears, and I'm not hearing ANY tape noise even at loud volumes. Absolute worst noise is the slightest 60 cycle hum at the beginning or end of one or two tracks when one mic is open by itself. Frankly, I'm not convinced I'm hearing that! I don't know if the RCA producers were magicians with analog tape, or if the company that mastered this CD figured out how to take out the hiss without disturbing the rest of the music... but it is whisper-quiet. the CD label says "Advanced Noiseshaping Redither," and maybe that's the magic... whatever it is, WOW!

In very brief moments, to only the slightest degree, is there a hint of analog overload, but it NEVER distracts from the music and is only a surprise because you almost forget this isn't a full-digital recording!

If you have the SLIGHTEST interest in the Sons of The Pioneers, cowboy music, or simply want an excellent example of what the medium was / is capable of, please do yourself a favor and get this CD!

P.S. - An added bonus for me: ironically, my Great-Grandparent's copy was MONO. Obviously, these recordings were meant to be heard in stereo. If you listen to the files on this page, you'll hear some of the problems of listening in mono: phase issues, etc. Buy this, and listen through headphones for best effect.

P.P.S. - Dig that bass singer!!! :-)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Western Songs By A Great Group.......2006-08-09

This CD has some great songs sung by The Sons of the Pioneers. Ridin Home, Way Out There and Riders in the Sky are outstanding. This is the group that carried on after Bob Nolan retired. The singer who sounds like Bob Nolan is Tommy Doss who does a great job on Riders in the Sky and others. I bought this album in 1959 when it was originally available, and am happy it is now on CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful - no other word for it.......2007-05-30

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. A must for both casual and die-hard Western fans. Great even if your sense of nostalgia doesn't reach that far back (like me; I'm 22). I love the combination of slow ballads and fast, jumpy songs.

5 out of 5 stars More Momories of Westerns.......2007-03-09

Boy, do these bring back memories of some of the Great Westerns of the 50's. We sit and listen to the songs and think of the movies and the TV shows that they are from. We can remember who starred in the movies and how the "Sons of the Pioneers" entered the stage to sing.
This is a GREAT CD.

5 out of 5 stars Old West Nostalgia.......2006-10-29

For anyone old enough to remember all the great Old West TV shows and movies from the same era, this CD is bound to bring you lots of fond memories and relaxing pleasure. What's best, the artists are all the originals; there are no remakes. Plenty of tunes are on this CD. It's well worth the price and the time.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2006-10-24

The quality of the samples is better than the quality of the recordings.

5 out of 5 stars I Look Toward Home.......2006-10-05

This album takes me back to Texas. "The Sons Of Katie Elder" sung by Johnny Cash and "Nevada Smith" sung by Merle Kilgore sound good but are a bit modern. "The Searchers" sung by the Sons Of The Pioneers really hits home. As the sun sets and the days grow short I ride away and I look toward home.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars OK..just OK.......2007-06-25

First off, if you're coming here hoping for the latest round of "here's your sign" stupidity jokes...find a different Engvall CD. He does not a one of his signature gag here. Probably he's afraid they're starting to become stale and he might be correct. Instead the punchlines here are usually at the end of a story.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Bill realizes he's "getting older" (track 5) when he deliberates his wife's offer of a lovemaking session. ("When did THAT start?"). He also skewers the idea of bundled hotel amenities as he verbally parries with a front desk employee ("Part of Your Package"). (I won't spoil the punchline there..) Perhaps the best bit is Engvall pondering (in "Bad Weiner Day") how fish, an aquatic lifeform, developed a taste for terrestrial worms. ("One day, they were lying on the banks of a river....trying to catch their breath....thanks for those of you who got that..") He also finishes on a high note recalling his flight with the "Thunderbirds" (track 12)

LOWS:
The advice to "argue naked" in Track 1 isn't really yuk-worthy and "Slim Jims" is likewise pretty weak.

BOTTOM LINE:
It's OK but I've laughed harder at his older stuff. If you're hoping to take this along in the family truckster, be advised that Bill's language is a bit "ruder" than usual so you may want to sample the whole thing first rather than throwing it in the deck cold with the kids in tow.

1 out of 5 stars NOT His Best.......2007-06-04

I was really looking forward to this new cd, but was very disappointed. Some jokes were obviously old, and the new material was not funny at all. Save yourself the money, and don't even borrow from a friend.

5 out of 5 stars He is as good as ever..........2007-05-26

I think Bill is one of the funniest guys out there. He can use what we experience in a day and bring out the humor in it. I think this is the same if not better caliber than some of his early albums.

4 out of 5 stars Hooray for more Bill!.......2007-05-14

Bill's my favorite comedian and this is certainly funny. I've laughed harder but this is certainly worth the money. I was looking forward to more "here's your sign" and was dissappointed. But like I've said spend the money.

5 out of 5 stars Engvall's funniest yet.......2007-04-08

Bill Engvall has long been my favorite comedian on the scene. Forget that he's country; forget that he's "blue collar." Bill Engvall is a sarcastic storyteller of the highest caliber; his sarcasm and irony are honed to a point--which you could use to roast weenies over an open flame, but only if you eat 'em with Slim Jims and a few cans of beer.

On this album, Engvall bypasses his "here's your sign" bit for some real, genuine humor. He covers scooters ("You feel the need for speed?" he is asked, to which he replies, "I DRIVE a scooter!"), Slim Jims, the great herds of chickens that used to roam these lands, talking fish, boobies, naked arguments, NASCAR advertising, painful passing of gas, and Bad Weiner Day. It's a diverse album full of laugh-out loud moments, and other subtle jokes ("Thank you to all who understood that one," Engvall quips at one point). But, as he says near the middle of the album, "Hey, you all paid to see it." And it was worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Really excellent, I feel like a fool for overlooking it.......2006-04-04

I have bought most of Ahmad Jamal's CDs and picked this up to fill out my collection. I started with "The Essence" and mostly worked backwards in time. I'm sorry I didn't start with this one: it is really excellent. (But I suppose if I had started here I would have guessed that Jamal is senile now, and he's not, he's still producing outstanding work, 45 years later.)

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-02-04

This compilation consists of some of what I consider to be the best jazz ever recorded. There is impeccable, contagious groove throughout, but it is at the same time so sensitive, so musical, and so restrained. Definitely one of the tightest trios of all time. I would consider Ahmad to be in the highest ranks of the jazz pantheon even if Miles Davis never said a word about him.

5 out of 5 stars Breath Taking...........2005-09-18

Ahmad Jamal is one of the finest and smoothest pianist period! I use to listen to "Live at the Pershing" when I was in college. "Poinciana" would always put me in the right frame of mind. This compilation is well worth the money! It is the next best thing to seeing him "Live" in person.

5 out of 5 stars 1958 - 1961 -- Hardly, More like 1958 to Forever.......2005-01-20

We're lucky when music is initially captivating. Enriched when it is enduring. Ahmad's great launching platform is fortunately for us, both. Empowered by a world class supporting cast, Jamal showcases the talents that earn him worldwide recognition, and also mark a musical turning point for jazz music. Seminal and standing the test of time. What else could you want in a musical performance. Listen and enjoy. By the way, Israel and Vernel are masters. Worth the price of admission for their own performances.

5 out of 5 stars At The Pershing...and more -- Inspired Miles Davis!.......2003-01-02

The first sides are from the classic "Ahmad Jamal at the Pershing" which was as essential listening in its way as "Kind of Blue." Miles was inspired by the selection of show tunes, many of which he also recorded later with Red Garland playing the Ahmad Jamal role on piano. I think it was not so much what Jamal played but what he did not play. His use of space was phenomenal. Vernell Fournier was a New Orleans drummer and Isreal Crosby had played and recorded with Benny Goodman. Together they reinvented jazz for a decade. This LP, by the way, and not Muddy Waters recording was what put Chess Records (Argo's parent) on the map financially. So thank Jamal for the other music that he funded. Classic stuff and never enough of it.

Barbara Mandrell hit her commercial peak in the early 1980s, when her only serious rival as the queen of country-pop crossover was Olivia Newton-John. With her TV variety series, glitzy stage show, and commercial success, some questioned whether Mandrell was country at all, though she reasserted her loyalty when she recorded "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool," revived here as a kickoff duet by Reba McEntire and Kenny Chesney. The range of artistry assembled for this trans-generational tribute suggests that Mandrell's music remains deeply loved and widely influential, almost a decade after her retirement from music. Younger artists such as Terri Clark ("Singing Single in a Double Bed"), Brad Paisley ("In Times Like These"), and Dierks Bentley ("Fast Lanes and Country Roads") bring a hard-rocking edge to Mandrell hits, though Gretchen Wilson plays against type with the steel-guitar weeper "The Midnight Oil." Mandrell drew inspiration from outside country as well, as LeAnn Rimes reminds us with the string-drenched, rhythm & blues balladry of "If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Wanna Be Right," as does CeCe Winans with the sweeping gospel finale, "He Set My Life to Music." Best of all is the teaming of Willie Nelson and Shelby Lynne on the tender "This Time I Almost Made It." --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars She Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool.......2007-03-08

A good cd. The artists, in general, did an outstanding job. There are only a couple that I am not too wild about, but overall - a very good job.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-02-13

I ordered this for 1 song because, of 1 artist, however I like almost all the tracks with a few exceptions

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-01-18

Interesting choice of the artist's on the CD. I was hesitant about a couple of them, but they really made the songs their own (so to speak). How wrong can you go with Randy Owens, Reba, Sara Evans, Brad Paisley, etc.. I loved Barbara Mandrell when I was a little girl, and looked forward to this CD. They are older, more traditional songs so those who only like "new country" may find it a little slow. But, a classic is a classic no matter who sings it. Randy, Reba, and Cece were my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Barbara Mandrell tribute cd.......2007-01-10

Arrived in great condition; it was a gift that has been very much enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars Barbara would be better.......2006-12-09

Yes, I gave it 5 stars because it was done in honor of Barbara Mandrell, not to give hits to other singers that were once (always will be) her songs. Anytime A Mandrell sister is honored I'm all for it. NO one has more grace or talent than these ladies (BARBARA, LOUISE & IRLENE). The music business wants to honor the best of the best. Names we've heard so far are, CASH, JONES, WYNETTE, CLINE, LYNN, JENNINGS, WILLIAMS and now MANDRELL. I say it's about time the younger music fans learn and remember how they (the Mandrell's) did it and did it with class style!!! I've never left a Mandrell show without feeling I had been entertained.

Barbara recorded and had hits in 3 decades, unheard of today!

Thanks to all who re-recorded these memeories!!

Love ya Barbara, you are the best!

Though he earned earliest acclaim as a blues traditionalist, Taj Mahal is no purist. Instead, he's an eclectic artist who finds common spirit with the blues in a multicultural array of styles. This album's acoustic arrangements lace the ukuleles, slack and steel guitars of Hawaii (where Taj lived for 15 years) with the airier strains of flute and saxophone and the lilt of the African kalimba. Within this follow-up to 1998's Sacred Island, the music island-hops from the Pacific to the Caribbean, as a blend of reggae and calypso influences highlight "Great Big Boat," "King Edward's Throne," and "African Herbsman." Taj and his Hula Blues band additionally apply their transformational power to a sinuously propulsive rendition of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," as well as providing syncopated renewal for traditionals "Black Jack Davy" and "Stagger Lee" plus Mississippi John Hurt's "My Creole Bell." Straying furthest from bedrock blues, the lovely Hawaiian balladry of "Moonlight Lady" shimmers like moonbeams dancing across the ocean ripples. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars The wistful blues.......2003-10-02

Has Taj Mahal lost it? One might think so after a superficial listen to his latest outing. Closer attending renders a different conclusion.

It's all about the vibe, here--one that, apparently, not everyone can get on board with. How can you have the blues on Hawaii? Or in the Caribbean? Simple. Not everyone is a plantation owner or scuba-diving tourist guide. Read V. S. Naipaul's great book, The Middle Passage, and find out what it means to be a "client culture."

Yes, there's a kind of inanity in much of the lyrics (although a good portion of them are traditional). Yes, this is miles from Mississippi John Hurt (although it contains one of his tunes), let alone Cory Bell or even Muddy Waters.

But you know what? Taj Mahal still works his magic here: The trademark vocal gruffness, esp. manifesting itself at the end of "Blackjack Davey" (easy to see where Captain Beefheart got his basic approach from), the raw edge of his electro-acoustic guitar (which has pretty much replaced his National Steel guitar), the loosy-goosy ensemble playing--all of which is perfectly suited to the island-blues vibe he's evoking here.

I, for one, celebrate this nifty transformation of the blues into an island key. And if you've got big ears, I think you will too.

1 out of 5 stars What a waste.......2003-09-09

I've played it through three times and am going to junk it.
It's [bad] - incredibly repetitive lyrics.
Whatever happened to the real Taj Mahal?
This is the last time I ever pay any attention to a magazine music reviewer. I would definitely like to have my money back.

4 out of 5 stars Island Taj.......2003-07-29

I've been a Taj Mahal fan for over two decades now, and the man never ceases to amaze me with his variety, artistry and creativity. My first initiation to Taj was through his early standard acoustic blues covers and originals, then I followed along as he tried his hand at blues-infused African rhythms, Reggae, Pop, Soul and duets with diverse musicians such as Toumani Diabate and Ry Cooder. This time around Taj combines blues with Hawaiian music and the results are stunning. From the great Hawaiian blues rendition of Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower', to the hauntingly beautiful Taj Mahal original 'Moonlight Lady', this is some incredible music. There are also some interesting blues standards here given new life with Hawaiian blues flavor, such as Mississippi John Hurt's "My Creole Bell' and the blues standard "Stagger Lee". Overall, this is a very impressive new release by one of blues music's true living legends, Taj Mahal. Highly recommended for fans of Taj, lovers of Hawaiian folk music, or fans of blues music everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars This is great stuff!.......2003-07-06

We were in Kauai for Christmas 2001 and they have kiosks which sell mostly Hawaiian music (slack key, etc) I spotted a Taj Mahal alblum on display and the clerk told me he lived on the island. I had not heard from Taj since the late 60's in San Francisco and was pleased to see he was still around. The clerk demo'ed a German release of this alblum and his Sacred Island alblum. I was blown away. It was the sound track for our two week vacation. My 86 year old father was with us and he loved it too. Sadly, he passed away shortly after our return. I still listen to these two often and remember our time there. Last Monday Taj was at Humphrey's in San Diego and we saw him there. After the show when only a dozen or so people were remaining, he came out and chatted with us. He is so pleasant and unpretentious and talented.

2 out of 5 stars This cd gives the blues..........2003-07-05

This cd gives the blues, but not in the way intended. This is a disappointing cd from a musician who has produced many great works. The music draws from Hawaiian music, but not enough. What comes out is a water down version mixed with a dash of R&B.
The band is not much better in concert. I recently saw them at the Fillmore in SF. They appear to be very good musician, but there is no spark. All the energy was coming from Taj. He had three ukulele players, and this could have been a great opportunity to show mainlanders what a great ukulele musician can do with four strings. But, these musician only played rhythm and mostly the three chords all ukulele students learn in the first lesson, G, F and A. My son and I, the next night, went to a concert of hawaiian music which was excellent by Amy Gillion, Willie K and Makana.
I advise getting Taj Mahal with the Phantom Band or earlier material. If you want hawaiian music visit the international music section at Amazon.com and try some of the musician listed above, or others such as Ohta-San, Sistah Robi, Iz, or many of the excellent slack key guitarist.

1 out of 5 stars Good Selection, Terrible Sound.......2007-06-21

This should have been great. The song selection, the graphics and notes are first rate. The problem is that the remastered sound is AWFUL. I have the Proper sets on Ernest Tubb and Bob Wills, and the sound is good for budget sets. On this set however, the sound is so bad that it makes much of it unlistenable. The reproduction is most annoying on the artists voice, where it's almost always distorted. It's sad that you have to spring for the expensive Bear Family set to get this material done right. Material this important needs to be treated with more care.

    1 out of 5 stars all.......2007-03-08

Cool Cool Water and Whuskey brought me back to the 1940s when alot of music meet something in a better life than now with music going no where. Today Country music has little in it .Too BAD.But I'm just a country boy of middle 60's in age.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent 25 track collection of the Sons' RCA 1940s work.......2003-05-07

These tracks were recorded for RCA Victor from 1937-1951 and ASV as put out this excellent sounding compilation of their best from this period. Roy Rogers only appeared on 4 tracks of this CD but of course, with and without Roy, the music is great and some of the highlights include the RCA Victor recordings of "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and "Cool Water," the WWII war song "Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima," "Wagons West," "The Last Roundup," "Red River Valley," and "Cigareets, Whusky and Wild, Wild Women," but the entire CD is full of great music. If you already have their Decca recordings on greatest hits CDs and can't afford to shell out the Bear Family boxed sets, this is the CD to buy for their 1940s RCA recordings as the music is timeless and they are one of the greatest vocal groups of western music ever.

5 out of 5 stars Sons of the Pioneers.......2003-05-01

If your a Sons of the Pioneers fan,ya gotta add this one to your collection. It does have some of the standard "Sons" songs, but there are some gems on this C.D. "Serenade to a coyote" is my favorite on this C.D. It seems that the more i look for sons of the pioneers music, the more i appreciate what they did for "Cowboy" music
