cello lover.......2007-05-31
Absoluty the best. It is no wonder she was the world premier cello artist!! Can't say enough. If you love cello, and classical music, this is a must have. Her whole collection is worth every penny!!!
99% perspiration.......2006-11-08
(4.5/5 stars) This is a two-disc collection of musical works, in which the great cellist Jacqueline du Pre plays. The first disc consists of three cello concerti by three different composers: Dvorak (Romantic), Haydn (Classical) and Elgar (Romantic). Very good music, though it might leave you wondering what all the fuss is about. Not to worry: just pop in Disc Two to find out. The second disc contains shorter works by a wider variety of composers. It also might just leave you breathless by its beauty. Saint-Säens' "The Swan" (from "Carnival of the Animals") is nearly indescribable in its elegance, with du Pre's cello dancing with a harp. This haunting recording should not be missed. Bruch's "Kol Nidrei" is magnificently gorgeous as well. Three fantasy pieces from Schumann, one of Mendelssohn's "Lieder Ohne Wörter" and a stunning Brahms sonata infuse this collection with genuine grace. Since these were recorded prior to the advent of digital recordings, you might hear a very slight hiss on some of the recordings. This is barely audible and really does not detract from the pleasure of listening to it. Each disc runs 75 minutes, making this inspiration last long indeed.
Immortal Legend.......2006-10-07
As a cellist, I grew up listening to Jacqueline Du Pre's recordings. Even now as a 35 year old, I'm still enthralled by her amazing talent. This is a great cd if one is looking for a wonderful introduction to this superb cellist or simply wants to savor her most well known recordings. Du Pre owned the "Elgar" concerto. No other words can summarize this fact. Other beautiful and moving pieces are here on this disc: Bruch "Kol Nidrei", Haydn "Concerto No.2", Faure "Elegie", Brahms "Concerto No.2". The cello is a difficult instrument to play due to the strength required in both hands. Du Pre's playing touches the heartstrings with both emotion and depth. The tone that she coaxes from her cello is amazing. Jacqueline Du Pre is a legend.
Epitome of Cello.......2006-06-23
As a cellist, I absolutely love du Pré's work. I actually found this CD when I was looking for a modern recording of "A Jacqueline du Pré Recital", a record compiled of pieces done between July 15, 1962 and April 1, 1969. The second CD in this set contains the same songs as that record.
The concertos on the first CD are spectacular, especially her rendition of the Elgar concerto which has defined the piece since she first performed it. The second CD, however, is just as wonderful as a collection of some of the most loved cello pieces. No cello recording complete without Saint Saen's "The Swan" and du Pré's version is the only one I've ever heard that I actually like. "Elégie in C minor" (composed by Gabriel Fauré) is one of my personal favorites especially since her rapport with the pianist is obvious and the two instruments blend in a way that makes the piece even more poignant.
Overall, this CD is a must-have for anyone who loves cello as a perfect sample of Jacqueline du Pré's work.
Ooo! Samples!.......2005-11-29
As far as the romantic period goes, Jacqueline Du Pre is my personal favorite 'cellist. Her sensitivity to put expression of the musical idea always outweighed the desire to appear impressive. There is a difference in being just a virtuoso and being a musician. A virtuoso has the capability to dazzle and amaze, but music is more than just being impressive, and Du Pre succeeds in becoming, in every sense, a musician first and foremost. The only complaint I have of this album is the fact that you only get one movement of each piece! Even so, this a wonderful "sample dish" of Du Pre's extraordinary playing, mainly meant to get you hooked so you can get more.

Customer Reviews:
like sparkling mineral water.......2006-12-22
It is something near to a cleansing experience to listen through the Mozart piano repertoire as performed by Daniel Barenboim.
For starters, Mozart achieves his sparest, cleanest, most limpid lines when writing for solo piano. Then comes Daniel Barenboim, whose reading of Mozart is crisply and unemotionally classical. Not for him the drawn-out keyboard soliloquy. On the contrary, Barenboim gives us Mozart, only Mozart, and nothing but Mozart, clean and shimmering as sparkling mineral water.
This is not to say that Barenboim as pianist is unfeeling. On the contrary, the Fantasia in C Minor - to choose just one example with almost random lack of care - is quite moving. But not with a flourish. Rather, with almost sinewy restraint. The presentation represents a fine grasp of the master composer, nurtured with discipline across the length and breadth of the voluminous sonatas.
Indeed, the sheer volume of the Mozart piano sonatas is intimidating. It is astonishing to imagine one man having mastered it as Barenboim has. EMI Classics has done us the favor of collecting these two gentlemen's asynchronic collaboration in one set, affordable at that.
If Mozart is a musician for the ages and Barenboim a performer who left a formidable imprint on the twentieth century, their collaboration as represented in these recordings is a watershed that will need to be referenced by students of classical piano for at least another hundred years, or until people can only remember as far back as the Dixie Chicks.
Buy Barenboim on Mozart before that happens, and so stick your thumb in the dike against the evil day.
Soulless Rendition.......2005-10-16
I have several artists' renditions of Mozart's piano sonatas in my library. Daniel Barenboim's is the worst. His technique is timid. His rendition is soulless and perfunctory. I regret purchasing this collection. The best rendition I have is the collection of Glenn Gould. If you like Mozart's piano sonatas played the way Mozart intended, give Barenboim a pass and listen to Gould.
Lovely.......2005-03-17
As a pianist myself, I love Barenboim's playing. He does not play Mozart too Beethoven like. His performances are usually VERY good, and this is one example. Also includes the complete variations, which are very nice. The sound quality is excellent. Very highly recommended.
"The sonatas of Mozart are unique: too easy for children, too difficult for adults. Children are given Mozart to play because of the quantity of notes; grown ups avoid him because of the quality of notes." - Artur Schnabel
Top notch performances.......2004-06-17
Daniel Barenboim played this whole set with an interesting approach to WAM . The notations about classical , beethovenian style are always hazardous.
When you are a musician you must avoid in the cliche , and you should feel the music as a whole and the playing must be the consequence of a overlong process that begins in your soul , then your inner mood , your intellect and finally your fingers. I remark the aspect when you are in front of Mozart, Beethoven Wagner, Bruckner, Bach , Schubert and Bartok , because these composers are in a highest level than the others and the music itself is merely a device for expressing deeper issues.
That's why this set is superb. Barenboim plays a Mozart rich in expresiveness , he gives to Mozart presence .
Barenboim plays music as Vegh or Furtwangler did it , always seeking the landscape far beyond the score . That's why they are so original in their performances . The rapture is not a device for exhibite his skills , it''s the final product of a long process.
Acquire this set. It's an unvaluable treasure.
Very good, but a bit misleading?.......2004-05-15
Barenboim playing Mozart has his critics, who say he's "too Beethovian" when performing Mozart's piano sonatas and piano concertos. I disagree; I love his style. Others might not.
My only complaint with this 8 CD set is that the advertised piano sonatas occupy the first 5 CDs; the last three are piano variations -- interesting, but not of the quality of the sonatas themselves. Surely a less-expensive 5-CD set, providing just the sonatas advertised in the title, would offer better value for money. On the other hand, 5 great CDs for $48 isn't a bad deal.

Mostly good.......2007-05-26
A bit of a mixed bag. The symphonies are superb. This is one of the great symphony cycles. The piano sonatas are good, very good (analog) sound. The quartets are well recorded indeed, but there are better cycles out there. The rest is OK, and the sound is genrally good.
Look at the List of Performers First.......2006-11-17
If you want most of Beethoven sitting on one bookshelf, this is a great bargain (especially if you shop for it on amazon.de). But few if any of the performances represent the pinnacles of interpretation that most listeners demand when Beethoven is the composer. The symphonies for instance: can Blomstedt be compared to Furtwangler or (if you lean toward historically informed instrumentation) Gardiner? Most amazingly, the artists who perform the quartets -- the heart of Beethoven's music -- are not even named in the listing.
On the other hand: Vivaldi: The Masterworks is a collection including the very best interpreters, such as Fabio Biondi! Bach Edition (complete Bach) is a fabulous selection of recordings made over 20 years, and almost the same praise can be given the Complete Mozart.
this "masterworks" series is available much more cheaply from Amazon France.......2006-05-28
there are several sets in this series and it's much cheaper to buy these from Amazon France.
included are bach, beethoven, vivaldi, brahms, dvorak, schubert, handel, hayden, and mendelssohn.
they're even cheaper than the list price once u go through the checkout (VAT is removed for overseas (out-of-france) purchases).
**also, the 'complete works of mozart' set is much cheaper there (or at Amazon Germany), too. the 'complete works of bach' is due out later this year.
You heard guy below: Beethoven needs the royality checks! .......2006-04-07
There is quality beyond the Austrian green cardboard (which is lovely to look at, to say the least). In fact, the performance of the symphonies (Dresden Staatskapelle and Herbert Blomstedt) is alone worth the price. The Staatskapelle is a solid group, and Blomstedt, although less wellknown, holds his own. It should be mentioned that Blomstedt recorded many of the most celebrated 20th composition CDs on the market, and definitely knows his stuff. Peter Wohlert recorded mostly for compiliation lables, but to be selected by the Berlin Phil shows that he is a formdiable conductor in rank as well.
Should you buy this collection then? Given the fact that each CD cost $1.75, there is definitely the bargin factor. However, Beethoven's music desveres the top interpreters and musicians of our time - and this applies for all of his music, not just the symphonic. If you are into bargins, then proceed to buy this collection. However, if you save up a bit more, you can buy Karajan's 1963 Beethovens symphonies along with Kempff's 1956 sonata cycles for just a bit more than 70 bucks. Shop around for the string quartets, and the complete overtures should range anywhere from 15 to 30 bucks depending on the conductor/ensemble.
Overall, this is certainly an exceptional bargin. However, quality matter more than money. Besides, chicks dig people with sophisticated tastes.
Buy my box Set!.......2006-03-21
Awesome deal, 40 CD box set of me, Beethoven! There are 3 principle reasons you should buy this box set:
This box is QUALITY my friend, made of the finest, Austrian cardboard with a lovely green finish, it is made to last! You can just set it on your dresser and whenever you need a Beethoven fix you can just pull a CD out. But don't you hate getting your CDs out of order so you can't find what the hell you're looking for?! Not with this set! They are well organized into symphonies, concerti, sonatas and such, so you can find EXACTLY what your looking for, and they have big numbers on them so you can put them right back where they belong.
And the music! Need we go into this, composed through the inspiration of God himself and penned by the greatest composer who ever walked the streets of Vienna, me, Beethoven! Top notch, all done by top performers and recorded at high, clear, digital quality, stick one in your stereo and rock out man! All of my great and mighty works are here, absolutely sublime!
Lastly, you'll be supporting me, I need those royalty checks to keep rolling in!
Buy it if you love me or just buy it if you want people to think that you're sophisticated (the chicks also dig it, I should know: Antonie Brentano, giggity!), you can't go wrong!

The average listener will never have heard most of the music on these discs, sets of variations Beethoven composed in his piano-playing days for casual use. All but one lack opus numbers, which means Beethoven didn't take them very seriously. There are no hidden masterpieces here, at least not in Ogdon's nine selections. But the music has charm and grace, and gives dedicated Beethoven-lovers a chance to experience the composer at his most informal. Ogdon, a great fire-breathing virtuoso during his brief prime, plays this music with modesty and subtlety, never inflating the music beyond its boundaries. These previously-rare recordings (if they were ever issued at all) expand our understanding of a great, tragic pianist, brought down at the height of his career by mental illness. The Gilels performances, of somewhat better-known music, are rescued from their original use as fillers on concerto LPs. Gilels plays the almost famous 32 Variations in C Minor with wonderful drama, and captures the humor in the "Turkish March" Variations. With EMI's excellently remastered sound and super-bargain price, this set is well worth acquiring for anyone interested in the music. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Ogdon and Gilels put Beethoven's Variations on display.......2005-07-09
Beethoven's WoO ('werke ohne opus', works without an opus number) numbers scare away a lot of listeners. They say, "Since Beethoven didn't care to give an opus number, he didn't care about it" or "Beethoven thought it was immature or second rate music." However, these are dazzling sets of variations, probably originating from Beethoven's live improvisations and therefore were not conceived to be published works (though most of them were published soon after they were written). Among these variations are some of the most challenging, creative, and wildly ingenious developments of piano technique of the 18th and early 19th centuries, the very same elements that would lay the foundations for Beethoven's 5 great Piano Concerti, his unsurpassed body of 32 piano sonatas, and his use of the piano in chamber music.
And so I disagree with Ms. Gerber's remark that Beethoven didn't take these pieces very seriously or that there are no hidden masterpieces here. Many of the variations are masterpieces in and of themselves! While the Variations WoO 65 and 66 (1790-1792) are clearly simpler and more tradiationally 'Viennese' than the later WoO 78 'God Save the King', WoO 79 'Rule Britannia', and WoO 80 'C minor'(1802-1806), there is quite a feast for your ears in each piece. These virtuosic variations are perfectly suited to the remarkable interprative and technical skills of two great Beethoven performers, John Ogdon and Emil Gilels. [Certainly, If people would venture to name the people who could overcome any technical barrier on the piano, Ogdon's name would be at the top of the list.] While this is mostly Ogdon's time to dazzle us with his fancy fingerwork, Gilels performs the best known of these works, the C minor Variations WoO 80 and the D major 'Turkish March' Variations op. 76 (1809), and also puts on an amazing show. You'll hear cascading scales and arpeggios, octave passages, pedal tones, trills, rapidly repeated notes, fugues, beautiful harmonization and voice leading, all of which come up in Beethoven's sonatas. (For examples, from WoO 79 the second variation foretells the opening of Sonata op. 109; the third variaion of cascading arpeggios is similar to a passage in the last movement of the Waldstein Sonata. Further examples abound, though the drama and form of these variations does not compare to the greatest among the sonatas.)
The EMI producers were wise to put each variation on its own track, just in case your ears want to hear those stunning pyrotechnics or harmonic twist again.
The liner notes are informative and concise though do not attempt, as I have, to portray the importance and ingenuity of these works. With 13 complete sets of Variations in 2 CDs, this disc is a must for a Beethoven collector, lovers of piano music, and will provide many hours of fun and satisfying listening for any music lover. This is a stunning EMI re-issue compilation, which at about 140 minutes, is a bargain. We are also fortunate that EMI has re-issued remasterings of several other great Ogdon recordings (Rachmaninoff piano music, Shostakovich concerti). Get this while you can, and then look for more Ogdon and Beethoven Sonatas.

Customer Reviews:
The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19
Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

Here's an interesting concept: two CDs of great classical music excerpts combined with a nearly 250-page booklet featuring a glossary of all the major classical terms (from adagio to zarzuela), along with brief biographical notes for all the composers included. The excerpts are all generally superb, the price can't be beat, and the liner notes should be informative to any classical neophyte--not a bad introduction to classical music's greatest hits. The set might have been even more effective if the music was listed chronologically (rather than by composer's last name), but this is a minor qualm. --Edward Garabedian

In the main, the youthful Beethoven chamber music collaborations between Daniel Barenboim, Pinchas Zuckerman, and the late Jacqueline du Pré are characterized by broad, liberally fluctuating tempos, ripeness of tone, and a tendency to place expression ahead of stylistic considerations. Zuckerman's sweet vibrato, for instance, seems misplaced in Beethoven's terse, combative syntax (the earlier trios and violin sonatas, for example). Likewise, du Pré's throbbing solo lines impose a late-Romantic patina on the music that some listeners will find more appropriate to Arensky or Glazunov. More often than not, Daniel Barenboim's piano provides the decisive voice, by way of setting tempos and effecting transitions.
While the leaner, more economically expressive Abegg Trio (Tacet) and Vienna Piano Trio (Nimbus) Beethoven Trio offerings better reflect the composer's headlong brio and nervous energy, the Barenboim-Zuckerman-Du Pré team oozes sheer musicality and involvement in every bar. For this reason, one might well prefer Zuckerman and Barenboim's overwrought rapport in the Violin Sonatas to the violinist's tighter RCA remakes with Marc Neikrug at the piano. Du Pré's tragic illness prevented her and Barenboim from tackling the Cello Sonatas in the studio. Happily, their exciting, communicative live 1970 Edinburgh Festival traversals (plus the variation sets) were broadcast by the BBC and captured in excellent sound. So was a touchingly indulgent Tchaikovsky Trio preserved from one of Du Pré's final concerts, included as both a bonus and a memento. Tully Potter's excellent booklet notes give equal time to music and artists, and rightly discuss the performances in the context of their time. It's good to have these recordings gathered in a budget-priced, space-saving box. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
With minor reservations, "excellent".......2004-05-16
As noted above, this 9 CD set resulted from the youthful collaboration of Barenboim, du Pre (soon to wed Barenboim) and Zukerman. Clearly Barenboim is the driving force. As the info booklet asks: "Would Beethoven have approved of what Barenboim does here? Perhaps not, although he would surely have applauded the young man's courage".
Sadly, du Pre's illness (she had MS, forcing her retirement in 1973 and ultimately causing her untimely death) seriously limited the collaboration. Because her illness prevented a studio recording, the cello sonatas are from 1970 live recordings taped by the BBC. The audience noise is distracting, and I simply cannot understand why the coughs and chair scrapings could not have been edited out.
Barenboim and co really do drag out the slow movements; sometimes to good effect, and sometimes too much in my view. For example, the third movement of the Archduke Trio goes for 12:07 on the Naxos recording but extends to 16:02 here (but this one is still a better rendition).
To fill out the last CD, EMI includes Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio Op 50 (taped from a live performance in Tel Aviv in 1972), which is not in the same league as Beethoven's (but I guess they had to do something with the space).
My main complaint is that the thick 3-language info booklet is devoted entirely to the history of the performers and includes not a single word about the music itself!
That said, I am still very glad that I bought this set.

Envy the lucky pianists! Their literature includes a virtually unlimited supply of wonderful small pieces by the greatest composers, enough to fill an entire program with interesting, varied, high-quality music. By comparison, most of the short works in the violin repertoire are pure bravura pieces, written by other violinists to show off their own virtuosity. No serious performer would devote a whole recital to that sort of insubstantial fluff. On disc, however, and in the right hands, such a program can work well, and Maxim Vengerov is just the man to bring it off. For this record, he has chosen 12 popular favorites "dear to his heart" (and no doubt his fingers). Alternating slow, sweetly singing melodies with brilliant technical fireworks, they serve to display his incredible instrumental mastery and incomparably beautiful tone to splendid effect. However, his natural charm and ability to change mood and character in a micro-second are what really distinguishes these performances. He makes even warhorses like Kreisler's "Liebesleid" and "Liebesfreud" sound fresh and spontaneous and plays with so much genuine inner expressiveness that there is never a hint of cheap sentimentality. Vengerov's enjoyment is palpable and infectious, as is that of pianist Ian Brown, who supports him with total empathy and produces a lovely, subtly nuanced sound. The program is supposed to feature works by violinist-composers, but includes John Williams' all-too ubiquitous theme from "Schindler's List" and the D-flat variation from Rachmaninov's "Paganini Rhapsody" in a Kreisler transcription that preserves nothing but the key. No matter: as long as this infinitely endearing violinist continues to play the great masterpieces of the literature, no one would begrudge him an occasional virtuoso fling. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Another superb recording, but no surprise.......2005-01-12
Vengerov has become more mature in his technique and interpretation. He is giving less concerts - only 30 concerts in 2005, as compared with 110 in 2004 - he is determined to be disciplined. He is also learning a lot of other things to broaden his horizon, which would help enrich his music.
In this newly released album, he continues to demonstrate his virtuosity, adding new flavours to these favourite pieces. He continues to master those technically demanding pieces with relative ease, but he is capable of making them sound more difficult.
He is one of those violinists that could produce the sweetest sound on earth (the change of violin does not seem to have any effect on his playing). Kreisler's Liebesleid and Liebesfreud sounded afresh, although Vengerov has made them just a tiny bit too heavy. I would rather have them played in an easier and more relaxed fashion. Perhaps a little more rubato would have helped.
Vocalise was included again in this album. Compared with the previous recording, the self-indulgence has subsided, leaving it truly sorrowful. I like his interpretation this time round. The Theme From Schindler's List was played with much thoughts. The emotion was there. But it seems that Perlman's version remains the best in terms of the deepness and melancholy displayed.
I have deducted one star from my rating as I have been expecting something new from him. There is not much surprise in this album.
That said, Vengerov is surely one of the best performers now and I can see him becoming more mature in the next few years. Vengerov's fans would be satisfied. Not a bad start if you have never heard him.
