sure feels good feelin' good.......2001-02-23
What a nice complilation . This is feel good music to the max! I may be one of the few who would rather hear Elvin sing the songs himself rather than 'Fooled Around's" Mickey Thomas, but I can't quibble too much when a CD such as this provides so much fun. Elvin Bishop has coasted effortlessly through tough urban Chicago blues, the innovative experiments of The Butterfield Blues Band's "East-West",and the happy west coast soul n' funk music he was making in the early seventies. By 1973 Mr. Bishop had rediscovered his Oklahoma roots and preceded to put out some of the funkiest, and funniest, albums in his long and distinguished career. This excellent CD captures the best of Elvin's sly, hick, cool, Okie sugar bear persona better than any other compilation I've heard. If ya can"t find the vinyl ,then for gosh sakes get this CD and "Fool Around and Fall in Love", even if that ain't close to being the best song on the dadgum CD.And here's a P.S. Elvin's still out there playing the blues as cool and hip as ever. Dig those new albums too ya'll!
More than just the hit.......2000-04-30
Folks who only know him from "Fooled" need to discover one of the most underrated guitarists ever. "Travelin' Shoes" works as a perfect introduction to Elvin's Southern style.Enjoy!
Excellent survey of Elvin's best known period.......2000-03-20
"Sure Feels Good" surveys Elvin's six albums recorded for Capricorn records between 1974 and 1978. The material is not as bluesy as Elvin's earlier, immediate post-Paul Butterfield Blues Band recordings which are nicely anthologized on "Tulsa Shuffle." Rather, "Sure Feels Good" covers the more commercial period of Bishop's career and includes his only big hit, "Fooled Around and Fell In Love." Mickey Thomas, later of Jefferson Starship handled the vocals on the hit and on several other tracks on this anthology. This is a marked improvement over Elvin's vocal efforts, but there is a tradeoff. Elvin's earlier efforts, with vocals split between himself and Jo Baker, had a more earthen feel, while his Capricorn recordings are more polished and may appear overproduced in comparison. However, for fans of blues guitar and down home partying, one can hardly go wrong with this anthology. Together, "Sure Feels Good" and "Tulsa Shuffle" will amply anthologize Bishop's career for all but the most hard-core fans.

Barbara's first LP after leaving MCA........2005-08-24
Barbara signed the contract with EMI/America on Nashville now. The first time anyone has done so on a live TV show. EMI was taken over by Capital by the next lp release and Barbara became a victim of the new wave of country music. This is my favorite LP that she did with Capital/EMI. It was released on CD and the first one of Barbara's lp's to do so. The Best of and Greatest hit had been, but this was the first new release to go on CD. I have it it in LP, Cassette and CD. A rare thing as LP's were being replaced by CD's. If you can still find this one, grab it, it's a treasure!
Good title for a great album.......2005-07-22
As the title implies, this album finds Barbara singing songs of hope and joy. Child support, perhaps the standout track, is about a single mother's love for her child. The two tracks that originally opened each side of the vinyl album (tracks 1 and 6 on the CD) are both by Waylon Jennings. Barbara's cover of Just to satisfy you is very funky and I love it. Waylon co-wrote the other song (Angels love bad men) especially for Barbara and added some of his own vocals to it - it's brilliant. Elsewhere on the album, song titles such as It all came true, Sunshine street, I'm glad I married you and Sure feels good tell you all you need to know about the mood of the songs.
Musically, this was typical eighties country with a range of instruments from steel guitars to synthesisers. I love this album but I love it's follow-up (I'll be your jukebox tonight) even better. I reviewed that one in cassette format on Amazon.com
Barbara's Greatest Studio Collection..........2005-05-29
This album, released in the summer of 1987, is Barbara's greatest collection of new material in her catalog! It flows well between songs, and she gives some of her greatest vocal performances of her career in this set.
The opening cut is a cover of a Waylong Jennings / Willie Nelson duet from a few years earlier. Barbara slowed her version of the tempo down a bit from the Jennings / Nelson version, and delivered a solid performance.
Speaking of Jennings, the late country legend also penned the track "Angels Love Bad Men", and joined Barbara near the close of the song. It was released as the third single from the album in early 1988, but only made it to #48 on the country charts, as did the previous single release, the bluesy title track. Both songs should have been bigger radio hits, but country radio was virtually turning its back on Mandrell by the late 80's in favor of newer artists.
The lead-off single, "Child Support", faired slightly better than its successors, reaching #13 on the Billboard country charts. A little on the syrupy side, but a beautiful musical arrangement and a strong vocal performance by Mandrell make it a Mandrell fan favorite.
The strongest performance on this collection is "You Can't Get There From Here", a pretty ballad about trying to get over a past love, but not being quite able to. The melody and lyrics fit Mandrell's sultry voice like a glove, and probably would have been a pretty good hit for her. (It was originally slated to be the third single from SURE FEELS GOOD in the spring of 1988, before EMI decided at the last minute to go instead with "Angels Love Bad Men" as the next release.)
Her R&B-flavored cover of Vern Gosdin's "Hangin' On" is another cut that Mandrell truly excelled on. "Sunshine Street" is a bouncy, upbeat song about newfound love.
The other three tracks on this collection are fairly straight-ahead country: "One Of Us Is Always Leaving", "I'm Glad I Married You", and "It All Came True", the latter being a strong contender to have been a radio hit had it been released by the label as a single.
All in all, country radio and the record label really blew it on this one and missed out! This collection is FULL of strong consistent material from one of the classiest, most talented country divas to ever grace a music speaker.
