For anyone who enjoys the irreverent humor of South Park, there's plenty of it on this soundtrack. Stan, Kenny, Kyle, Eric, Sharon, Sheila, Terrance... all step up to the mic and deliver in a way the Chipmunks (their obvious musical influence) would never dare. The use of certain four- and five-letter words make this a less-than-appropriate gift for young 'uns, lest you be misled by the characters' cartoon status. Musically, it's mostly swooning cartoon music capped by the incessant ranting of the main characters. By the time you get to Michael McDonald, you may wonder what this "sophisticated" adult-contemporary singer is doing among the children of South Park and Saddam Hussein. Even Isaac Hayes performs not as a late-night Lothario but as his South Park character, Chef. His track is one of the eight that don't appear in the film but have been added to flesh things out. Weirdest of all: Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush performing a straight rendition of "O Canada." Huh? --Rob O'Connor

if you like south park, you need this cd,the song about kyles mom and uncle F'er were worth buying the cd used
Best Animated Soundtrack.......2007-02-03
As far as animated soundtracks go, this is by far, one of the best. Every song that appears in the movie actually appears on the soundtracks. You don't always get that and for once we do. Way to Go!!!!
Great...for the most part.......2006-02-19
Even though I'm not sure I'd call the movie one of my favorites, I've seen "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" more times than I'd care to admit. The film's soundtrack is the reason why.
The songs that are in the movie proper are very nicely done. They manage to further the plot and develop characters and things like that, but they also meet their most important goal: they're hilarious. When I heard the soundtrack for the first time, it brought me to tears of laughter; even now, little details like the "Wooooo!" by the spontaneous chorus line in "Kyle's Mom's A B**ch" bring a smile to my face.
The interpretations are a mixed bag - and the rap ones are downright terrible - but they're not why you're interested in the CD. Even so, the new versions of "I Swear It (I Can Change)" and "What Would Brian Boitano Do? Pt. II," are very nicely done, and the cover of "O Canada" is so good that I still don't know why it wasn't anywhere in the film.
I'm sure it's mentioned in other reviews, but the soundtrack isn't exact. There are a few short songs missing. "Hell Isn't Good" is gone, as are the various verses of Stan's "There's The Girl That I Like." "Eyes Of A Child" has been moved; it was in the credits in the film, and doesn't really belong in the middle of the character section of the soundtrack where it was placed. Those are minor quibbles, though - everything that matters is here.
As long as you're not offended by semi-frequent swearing and some raunchy lyrics, this soundtrack is a joy to listen to.
Kyle's Mom is A B****.......2005-12-17
This is one of the FUNNIEST songs that South Park creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker have ever made. I gave it 5 stars. I guarantee that this song will leave you laughing!

Customer Reviews:
Mountain Dulcimer and the Orchestra!.......2006-11-06
I bought this album because of the dulcimer concerto on it, and it didn't disappoint. Teh liner notes were outstanding and I am so glad to have this piece in my collection!
Beautifully Moving and Imaginative.......2006-05-27
I got to see "Blackberry Winter" performed live in Nashville a few years ago and it was awesome. I took violin lessons from one of the violinists in the orchestra for a long time, so it was a little extra exciting. I got to meet the conductor, Paul Gambill about a year later and he was a really nice guy. He also conducted us in a big youth-orchestra gathering where we played the soundtrack to "Lord of the Rings."
"The Stone" is by far my favorite track on the CD. The mysterious Scottish and Irish themes entwined with each other are simply fantastic. It pretty much just transports you to another world.
"Blackberry Winter" is awesome, too. There's not many great recordings of a mountain dulcimer with an orchestra to back it up. Plus, the melodies and themes in that itself are really uniquely beautiful.
Overall, it's great quiet time and thinking music. It's definetely worth it!

I heard this recording on NPR radio and loved it. While it was out of the mainstream usually stocked at music stores, I found it on Amazon, ordered it, and received in a matter of days! The recording is a lovely collection of Tennessee / Celtic pieces with wonderful solo work. Ellisor is a Nashville musician and composer and her "Blackberry Winter" for Tennessee music box is a real delight. Other pieces on the CD are by Barber, Kodaly, Mock, and Scearce.
wow!.......2005-04-28
I absolutely 'love' this CD. INNOVATIVE modern music. One of my favorites indeed.
Fresh & American!!.......2002-01-13
This is one exciting CD for several reasons. For those looking for orchestral sound that is uniquely American, Conni Ellisor provides the sound that has been missing since the end of Aaron Copland's career. In addition to Ellisor's compositions, the other tracks on this CD are an unusual and beautiful fit that compliments the other pieces. As is frequently the case in music, artists (Nashville Chamber Orchestra) and composers (Ellisor) off the beaten path are a national treasure. I use this CD for inspiration, relaxation, and restoration. One of the top 3 in my collection.

Customer Reviews:
I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11
This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.
I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.
"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.
MarMSED.......2005-08-27
The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.
Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24
Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.
The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.
Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.
Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

Flawless, relaxing, uplifting! It will move you!.......2005-10-02
So far this my favorite classical CD of the year. I never tire of listening to it (over and over on my iPod). It contains some really beautiful renditions of very moving classical pieces, both modern and ancient. All in all an emotional and dramatic presentation. The overall effect is relaxing but it will definitely never bore you!

Telecaster Master........2004-06-03
Danny Gatton was a truly exceptional musician--one of the world's greatest guitar players--period. When he passed on 10 years ago, people who play guitar--and people who just appreciate guitar music--mourned deeply--they still do.
"Portraits" is yet another reminder of what music lovers have lost, because it is a remarkable CD. From his opening R & B take on the classic "Rambunctious" to the three, live closing cuts, including a blistering "Orange Blossom Medley", Danny demonstrates his incredible versatility with blues, jazz and rock n' roll. Another highlight on this CD is "Lotta Lovin' ", Danny's tribute to those exciting rock n' roll pioneers, Gene Vincent and his Bluecaps--on this cut, Danny shows that he can play rockabilly guitar with the best of them--really outstanding !
If you are already a Gatton fan, and don't have this disc, push the "buy immediately" button ! If you like superb guitar playing and--somehow--are not familiar with the "Master of the Telecaster", you are not just in for a treat--get ready for a revelation ! Musicianship of the highest order !
Portrait of a Genius.......2000-09-23
Without a doubt, Danny Gatton was a musical genius: not only did he have flawless technique, but he had vast musical knowledge, a keen melodic sense, exquisite taste, fantastic rhythmic drive, and the rare ability to know when not to play. The CD is 5 stars from first to last, but my personal favorites are "Pretty Blue", a cooler, more elegant blues you'll never hear, and the live versions of "Linus and Lucy" which segues into "Orange Blossom Medley", which contains non-stop 9 minutes of the best guitar playing you will ever hear. Starting with a fast country 2-beat, Danny plays C&W guitar like only he could, then the band eases into a easy 4-beat shuffle, and Danny starts playing the best blues guitar this side of the Appalachians, or any mountain range for that matter, the band keeping up with him beautifully, and it all ends humorously. BUY THIS AND ENJOY !!!

It's truly a shame this great guitarist didn't have a larger audience,he should have been a household name. every cd of Danny is a 5 star.Portraits is great!

Album Description
The eighth full-length release by Floater containds fourteen new songs and a behind-the-scens DVD capturing moments from the band's nearly fourteen years together. Continually pushing the boundaries of modern rock, Floater flexes their creative muscle with intelligent lyrics that tell new tales of human relationships with the passion and power that has become one of the trademarks of this renowned Northwest trio. Keeping in touch with their early sound while stretching their wings, Floater once again demonstrates how they've captured audiences for well over a decade.

Another Floater Classic.......2007-01-10
The new album from the Eugene band is as always .... GREAT !!! Well done and well produced. The 7 CD's these guys have put out are my favorite cd's out of my 600 or so. Rob and the guys have done it again and I am already hungry for the next. If you get the chance, see them LIVE. You will not be disappointed. November 4th, They played for over 3 hours. The new light/laser show is the best I have seen anywhere. See you in Feburary at The Snitz. Concert Hall in Portland. Thanks Guys....Keep It Up. T.N
8/10.......2006-12-06
Floater is a band that can't help but make great music. They can be diverse and artsy without being flamboyantly over-the-top or excessively technical. They have a creative sound that blends intelligent prog rock with the crunch of old-school grunge, and just a dash of Primus-like craziness. _Stone by Stone_ continues on in this fashion, and while there are a few parallels between it and Floater's previous efforts, they still manage to produce a fresh sound that distinguishes this album from their others. One thing that particularly stood out to me on the album was the vocals. I never considered Rob Wynia to be an "extraordinary" singer (and I still would not exactly use that adjective to describe his abilities), but there are moments where he truly excels, and it seems that he has really begun to reach new levels as a singer. Musically, Floater once again proves to be above and beyond your typical "three-chord-special" rock band, as the songs are chock full of both their trademark catchy, inventive electric riffs and their clean, overlain solo sections.
On the whole, the album is pretty upbeat, but still manages to keep the darker qualities of the band intact. "Ghost in the Making" and "Weightless" come across as album highlights, but then there are so many highlights, seeing as the feel of the album changes from song to song, from the spacy groove of "Spaces Between Us" to the tight, riff-heavy "Everything Falls Our Way" and the melodramatic "Tonight No One Knows," which invokes images of a classic prog rock ballad.
As I listen to this album more, it seems that it could in fact prove to contend with _Angels in the Flesh and Devils in the Bone_ to be my favorite Floater album. While I probably would recommend _Angels..._ as a starter album for a new listener, I wouldn't discourage you from picking up this new album if you saw it in the store (unlikely as Floater is still on a small, local record label, but you get my drift). _Stone by Stone_ is a great album by a great band who takes fundamental rock music to new heights, and turns it into something that is beyond "fundamental." It is a strong addition to Floater's already solid and diverse musical portfolio.

Customer Reviews:
"Indifferent Works by Different Jerks".......2006-11-09
I can totally see a logical link between Big Boi and The Roots, and the original material (and it's not a racial one), but most of the other artists involved seem to fall into the following categories:
-Fake Soul / Plastic Soul: Joss Stone, a TV talent show winner; Maroon 5, airbrushed, pitch corrected, charisma-free purveyors of bland fake-funky pop. Josh Stone is here in an attempt to sell more of her records, whilst Maroon 5 are here in order to sell this record.
-Out of date musicians who haven't done anything reasonably worthwhile in years: See Isaac Hayes, Stephen Tyler (who has never done anything worth a damn), and Moby. They are presumably featured here because their names are easily recognised and may add some form of credibility (and may push up sales).
Basically, this album is a totally wasted opportunity: an ill-concieved and poorly excecuted sales exercise, and an appaling testimony to the lack of recognition of Sly Stone's awesome talent and legacy to music.
I can name a thousand bands who could have contributed something truly different and worthwhile to this collection. "Thank You Rhythm Nation 1814"? What the hell?
If you are even slightly interested in Sly Stone, go and buy either the 2 disc 'Essential' from a few years back, or the 'Greatest Hits' from the early 70's, or any of the inspirational and unbeatable albums he released between 'A Whole New Thing' and 'High On You'.
Sly Stone has inspired countless musicians from an enormous range of styles and backgrounds. To present a narrow range of pop singers performing shabby, unimaginative versions of his greatest hits is both disrespectful and despicable.
The recent tribute to Prince "If I was Prince" was patchy, but it was worth a thousand of these.
Dance To The Music By Sly & The Family Stone is my all-time favorite song.......2006-07-18
Sly & The Family Stone aren't dead, so this isn't a tribute cd.
Isn't not "muzik" and it's not "covers". The original songs
Are mixed into the new parts a la' Natalie Cole/ Nat "King" Cole style.
Sure people who like Sly & The Family Stone should have the originals
(c'mon buy another copy for your pod player) but these remixes are
a refreshing spin on the original songs.
Surely these artists aren't on this cd
trying to jumpstart dead careers! Big Boi (Outkast) on 'Runnin' Away', a paring of Buddy Guy with John Mayer on 'You Can Make It If You Try', a duo of Steven Tyler and Robert Randolph (& The Family Band) 'I Want To Take You Higher', John Legend, Joss Stone & Van Hunt 'Family Affair', and a
Mash-Up (DJ Reset) (mashup;two diff. songs `mashed-up' together) Thank You from Sly & The Family Stone
And Janet Jackson 1814 (Rhythm Nation) are a way to put artists together to work on something while giving some love to a band that inspires so many.
The title of the CD beckons one to realize that it's Different Folks that make the gesture
so nice. The `flower power' pun isn't lost on me.
For people who like `remixes' and `redos' like Different Strokes For Different Folks, check out Motown Remixed (on Motown Records), What Is Hip? Remixed (Warner Bros.). I bought this because I love Sly & The Family Stone. Dance To The Music by Sly & The Family Stone is
my all time favorite song forever.
Who The He11 Would Want to Waste Their Time And Money On This [...]?.......2006-05-25
"Tribute" my arse! This CD is an absolute disgrace. Will.i.am, Joss Stone, John Legend, Moron 5, and the rest of those fools (except Isaac Hayes) will never ever in their lifetime possess the talent, imagination, originality, and musicianship of Sly & The Family Stone. Sly's classic songs were blatantly butchered by these new so-called artists who brought nothing new to the table and were only interested in making an extra dollar. If this was a real tribute, then the songs would've sounded close to the original. If Sly was such an influence to these artists, I fail to hear it these days on FM radio. Do NOT get this CD at all- you hear me? And if you can't appreciate real music, then I see no reason for you not getting this catastrophe of a tribute. Other than that, skip this trash at all possible costs and get the original songs by Sly that are perfect the way they are and do not need "reworking" or an "extra twist".
and what about a new Sly record???.......2006-05-19
Durante mas de una decada, Sly Stone habia desaparecido de la escena. Algo vergonzoso en el caso de uno de los innovadores del funk, cuyas canciones han sido sampleadas por gran cantidad de rapers. La solucion, "Different Strokes By Different Folks".
Algunos se limitan a anadir pequenas variantes, como will.i.am en "Dance To The Music", Maroon 5 en "Everyday People", o Devin Lima en "If You Want Me To Stay".
Sly for the new generation.......2006-04-27
This is the album Sly would have created and released himself if he was born in the late 1970's. This is the modern day update of Sly's best work. The songs maintain the power and glory of Sly's original recordings while adding in new sections which flow well. Instead of sampling from Sly's hits for new hip-hop and rap songs this album inserts hip-hop and rap into Sly's original creations. The best of the old Sly with updates by a stellar group of current stars. The album appeals to anyone from my Woodstock generation and my children's generation who appreciate good classic rock & funk; and today's best hip-hop and rap. This is not a selection of Sly's songs watered down and performed poorly by current artists. This album honors Sly's greatness and showcaes current talent. I hope that Cynthia is still playing her horn and loving this album.

What this is not is a previously unknown opera by Mozart; what it is, is a sheer delight, a pastiche by several composers, including Mozart, performed in 1790 at the same theatre and by the same company that, in the following year, presented Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. In fact, Mozart's contribution to The Philospher's Stone is limited to about five minutes of music, but his spirit pervades. This premiere recording includes a bonus CD with a discussion of the piece as well as musical illustrations. Textually, almost every character in Magic Flute has a parallel in this work: Papageno and Papagena are here Lubano and Lubanara, for example, and musically they are eerily alike as well. The world is one of fairy tale and alchemy. It never plumbs the depths of Mozart's late works, but there's joyously good music to latch onto nonetheless. The entire cast is good, with special kudos going to Paul Austin Kelly, who sings tenor music that is difficult enough and chock full of coloratura to match the Queen of the Night's acrobatics. If the entire score is without extra-special brilliance, at least what we get is top-level, very-late-18th-century generic music--sort of like Salieri and company mixed with Mozart. And this definitive performance, on period instruments led by Martin Pearlman, will please everyone. Mozart, not quite; necessary, absolutely. --Robert Levine

Der Steine der Weisen.......2007-06-09
What can one say about a work by Mozart. It is devine.
Definitely lives up to its reputation of being the second Magic Flute. Full of wonderment, fantasy & characters.
Not only the music is superb but once again Schickeneder showed his brilliance as a libretist. The spoken dialogue paces just as vibrantly as the music.
I'm in heaven once again thanks to a wonderful man called Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Please listen and enjoy.
He's done it again.......2003-04-15
I agree with all the wonderful things previous reviewers have said about the music in Der Stein der Weisen and its performance by Boston Baroque and Company under the direction of Mr. Pearlman. I would add that Martin Pearlman's discussion on the bonus disc is worth the price of purchase. He discusses what is known of the work's history, the relationship between the collaborators, and key aspects of the music itself. Mr. Pearlman's comments are insightful and engaging, and the musical discussion is on a level to appeal to seasoned musicians, without leaving anyone else out. The whole production is a remarkable achievement.
Perfect? No. Worthwhile? Oh, yes........2002-08-11
After looking at the other reviews, I thought that they had said it all, and said it well. But since there are only four, I thought I would chime in.
While similar to Die Zauberflote in many ways (which should be enough of a recommendation to many), this is an excellent example of singspiel complete with comedy, drama, romance and touches of the supernatural. The sound is excellent, the performances solid, and it really is a fine opera in its own right. The adorable 'cat' duet betwen Lubano and Lubanara is almost worth the price by itself, in my opinion, but there's much more to it than that.
As I mentioned, other reviewers have already said it all. I'll just add that it's all true. This production really is an accomplishment, and hopefully it will be recognized as a major work in years to come. In the meantime, be the first on your block to own it. You'll thank yourself for it later.
Invaluable insight into Mozart's The Magic Flute.......2000-12-22
While I generally agree with the other reviewers of this disc, I would like to add that, for anyone who is fascinated and intrigued by Mozart's Magic Flute, this disc is essential listening. The parallel characters and similar plot motifs (and similar musical motifs, even between the Magic Flute and the non-Mozart music in Der Stein der Weisen) shed light on the fairy-tale elements of Mozart's opera so as to balance out the notion that The Magic Flute sprang up entirely from Mozart's and Schikaneder's Masonic ideas.
I also suspect that there is somewhat more of Mozart's music in this piece than the press reviewer counts. I interpret the attribution column of the liner notes to say that Mozart wrote much of the second-act finale, and, while I am no musicologist, the segments of that finale seem to build in the way that a Mozart finale does. Still, if you listen to The Magic Flute only because of the grandeur of the music and are really put off by the plot, this singspiel will only annoy you further, since Mozart was using his considerable talents here simply in support of yet another bizarre fairy tale.
I would be a bit more generous to the singers than some of the other reviewers. I enjoyed listening to all the performances and felt that the characters, such as they were (there is a good deal of fairy and folk tale formula here), were brought to life successfully. The orchestra of authentic instruments under Martin Pearlman always sounds good to me. There were never any moments when I felt I was putting up with an inferior performance simply because it was the only performance available.
Enjoyable Curiosity.......2000-10-27
This is a German singspiel, composed by a variety of late 18th century Viennese composers, including Mozart, for theatrical entertainment. It is good fun and entertaining, though it really contains no stunning pieces or enriching music. Mozart's contributions are jolly, but they are not profound or dramatic music of the sort which makes the Magic Flute a towering masterpiece. Instead, the work is more a demonstration of how much pleasurable vocal work was being written at the end of the 18th century and how much richer we are for being able to delve into it in first class recordings.
The performance here is excellent, making for a most enjoyable set. There are no outstanding voices, nor should there be, and the Boston Baroque ensemble sounds just right. The only real weakness is that, as with all singspiels, there are long bits of German dialogue which do not make rewarding listening on repeated hearings or if one is not fluent in German.
Don't get this set because it has bits by Mozart -- they are only a small fraction of the music and they are far from being his best work -- but because its a pleasant and enlightening set. But it's not for people who would not consider buying operas by Salieri, Cimarosa, etc., but only go for the big names.
