Album Description
Grouch & Eligh (G&E) are better than ever in this second G&E release. The beats are tight, the lyrics are profound and ingaging, and the vibe is tremendous. Comp this album. You'll love it from start to finish.
Customer Reviews:
at the top of my hip hop sleeper list.......2007-05-05
I should have wrote this last year when I got it, but when I first hear this cd I thought is was ok(some of my favorites started out like that) A while went by before I gave it another chance and then I really heard it. This one made me a L.L. fan but it's a tough act to follow. These guys have a style that goes back and forth from West Coast flava to underground hip hop feel. Lyrics are always serving the song and theme/story. They're not talking about how dope they are like everyone else, they just show you that they are with raw talent and sick beats that sound original and song writing that made this one of my favorite cd's. It's nice to have someone repping the West again like this and putting us on the map. It's a sleeper so give it a few rounds before you call it.
elightened emcees from the west coast.......2006-07-24
Check this out! Rappers who are elightened and intelligent that don't wear backpacks!!!! Amazing! West coast emcees Grouch and Eligh tear it up over pure west coast grooves and the whole time keep it in the realm of information, knowledge and good times. If your not familiar with Eligh, he is a very elightened and tight emcee who flows about everything from goblins to sitting by a lake meditating. All positive vibes on this album. The grouch is tight as well, seems a little more hardcore than Eligh, but they make a great team. Eligh has a somewhat avant garde flow that ranges from speedy to slow and the Grouch has a somewhat classic west coast flow. But don't expect lyrics involving gats, ho's and money, ice and cars, these lyrics are straight good times, contemplation and knowledge. Best track, Lake release, a song all about going to the lake to be isolated and meditating. The beats are a home made sounding, keyboard most likely. Both members of the Living Legends group, I personally feel that they are the best out of the group. Straight underground style and lyrics I can relate to. Worth the money, I recommend this album to anyone who loves tight hip hop with a west coast vibe.
Legends that will live on.......2006-02-25
This is my first real exposure to Grouch and Eligh, and I'm already kicking myself for ignoring the Living Legends crew for so long. Pure and simple, this album is fantastic. Grouch and Eligh possess a ridiculous amount of talent in the way of lyrics and delivery. One of the most alluring points about the lyrics are the fact that they aren't filled with an abundance of 10-cent words and battle rhymes. They speak out on real life issues. They compliment each other's flows beautifully, which plays off the production in an untouchable fashion. In turn, the lyrics sound fresher, and the lyrical topics are packed with original ideas.
The best way to describe some of these tracks is gorgeous. "Everafter" has a seriously addictive loop that blends perfectly with G & E's seamlessly unstoppable flows. "Just For You" featuring Basik MC & Bicasso, with guitar by David Goodlett boasts some pretty exciting head-nodding production. "Mr. President" has some interesting political commentary (obviously left-wing). I enjoy this lyric from the Grouch - "I don't want to wake up to a bomb in my backyard / Mr. President, quit talkin' for me / I shouldn't have to be 60 and flat broke / The way it set up ain't lookin' out for we". One of the most beautiful tracks on the album is the title track - "No More Greener Grass" featuring Pigeon John. DJ Epik's production is bumping and soulful, which compliments the addictive chorus. "Emotion" also remains a favorite.
Overall, there isn't a wasted track in the bunch. To sum it up, the album is very accessible, contains addictive choruses and hooks, but still manages to keep that west coast underground feel. Everything here is far from abstract. Just real music and real lyrics from real artists.
Scared of the future of these guys.......2006-02-17
This is a great album. Having said that, F*ck the dumb, They don't have this, and other previous Grouch albums (including Living legends almost famous) have a good solid verbal foundation, and don't rely on weak hooks and bad backing vocals to sell their points. The whining voices on road to road irk me. the chorus on no more greener grass makes me wanna puke, pigeon john sounds envious of his peers that have sold out, and expresses regret in not being able to join them (his intro says it best "Yeah! Wassup yall!") The rapping is still amazing on this album, as you would expect from both grouch and eligh. the chorus on no more greener grass makes me wanna puke, alot of the things that bug me on this album speak to loss of artistic control... perhaps i'm just being whiny, and want more of the same from grouch and eligh, and they are sick of what they've been doing, which only they could tell me. as it is, i'd love an accapel version of this album remixed... (dangermouse? are you listening?)
G&E for Presidents.......2006-01-29
it seemed like I didn't know what I was looking for until I found this album sitting on top of a whole bunch of cds. After buying this cd, time after time listening to it, it got better and better. Now I can say this is my favorite hip hop cd to listen to because for that certain time I was going through, I could really relate to the lyrics.. All these troubling times that we all go through have us reaching out in desperation sometimes, Grouch & Eligh allows for that connection with pleasing messages of comfort and faith... a straight up roller coaster ride with 'Emotion'.
I remember hearing a lot of bad reviews on this album, but I always backed this album up to the fullest and am glad that it is now getting the appreciation it deserves. Of course, being from Los Angeles, I like that west coast laid back feel and the Grouch & Eligh duo definately hits the spot. You got Grouch with his powerful delivery and then Eligh with his speedy flow like a Batman & Robin. All the tracks are good to listen to and I'm sure it'll stay in your cd player for days straight if you'll just LISTEN.

Amazon.com essential recording
"Kinky writes from the bottom of his heart and/or the heart of his bottom," explains Captain Midnight in the liners to this engaging 17-song tribute to the ultimate "Texas Jewboy." Friedman's songs offer a most unusual blend of insight and irreverence, of scathing social commentary and absolute inanity, wrapped up in traditional country clothing. "Ride 'em Jewboy," despite its lighthearted title, is a moving rumination about the Holocaust, delivered sympathetically by Willie Nelson. Lee Roy Parnell assuredly honky-tonks through "Nashville Casualty & Life," a poignant ode to a mistreated Music City busker, while Dwight Yoakam dips his drawl into "Rapid City, South Dakota," a song about runaways and unwanted pregnancy--perhaps the only pro-choice country song around. Lyle Lovett invests the proper amount of resignation into "Sold American," Friedman's lament on fleeting stardom and capitalist betrayal. Guy Clark, Tompall Glaser, Tom Waits, Billy Swan, and even the Kinkster himself also issue noteworthy readings. Perhaps the impressive roster of interpreters here will show him to be more than a mere novelty--or maybe they'll prove him to be the most weighty novelty act in town. Either way, the corned beef will come by and by... --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
the humor is a bit raw, the songs are fine.......2007-02-07
The rendition of `Autograph' by Delbert McClinton in this CD is one of the best songs I have ever heard. I found it first on the internet, and it was only when I was trying to find chords to play it myself that I discovered that Kinky Friedman wrote this gem. "When rock n' roll was real" is the feeling that gets captured so well I can hardly believe it myself. I finally bought the CD and discovered that the corny Texas Jewboys have a lot of humor and become the perfect illustration of "They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore."
Great songs, great singers.......2002-09-04
There may be better tribute albums out there, but I don't know about them. An all-star cast delivers the goods here. I'll just mention a few of my favorite tracks: Willie's version of "Ride 'em Jewboy," while not quite as heartfelt as Kinky's own, is excellent. Guy Clark, a great singer-songwriter himself, does justice to "Wild Man From Borneo," a song with depth that popular music seldom reaches. Marty Stuart's version of "Lady Yesterday" is great; Billy Swan (remember him?) does an especially beautiful take on "When the Lord Closes the Door." I should mention that Jonathan Yudkin plays absolutely beautiful violin on that one. I can't quite get into "Ol' Ben Lucas," though. They could have left that one off, but that would have ignored another side of the Kinkster, I suppose. This album is a unique document that is an essential part of any serious country collection. The final track, "You're Welcome, Kinky," is pretty whacked. I don't want to give away the ending here, though.
A couple songs are a definite ***** (5 stars!).......2001-11-21
I'm hardly Jewish, but "Ride Em Jewboy" and a couple others make this record well worth the buy. "Ride Em Jewboy" is one of the prettiest songs in the world. I think I like Kinky Friedman. He's not PC (a plus) and he's not afraid of his own testosterone (a definite plus). At the same time, his songs reveal a sensitive soul, a real gentleman.
I love the Kinkster.......2001-07-10
In this day and age, when gross-out jokes pass for comedy, it's a pleasure to come across an artist who is able to mix satire with sincere feeling. He's funny and his social commentary is unbeatable. I especially love "They ain't makin' Jews like Jesus anymore," and "Highway Cafe."
A Pearl!.......2000-08-23
Ignore my close association with this effort and understand this: I would not have joined this 2 year journey had i not believed in my heart that "Pearls In The Snow" would showcase the cream of the Tradional Country Crop! Songs by Kinky, produced by Nashville's brightest new "studio magic lady", Kacey Jones, and performed with mind blowing emotion by the true blood of Real Country: Willie, Lyle, Dwight, Marty, Lee Roy, Guy, Asleep At The Wheel, and many more. It delivers smoked Texas Music on butcher paper. Eat it with your hands and let the sauce stain your sole forever...

A Classic for the Collectors.......2006-10-07
These sessions were to become the inspiration for Al Santiago's Alegre All-Stars who predated the more famous Fania All-Stars. The formula? Get top rate musicians into a studio and let them wail!
Cachao's legendary sessions feature some of the greatest players of Latina/o music: Tata Guines, whose style served as a template for many other congeros to follow, most notably Giovanni Hidlago; Chocolate, who would later gain fame with Eddie Palmieri's La Perfecta and then on his own; El Negro Vivar on trumpet: Victor Paz who was with the Tito Rodriguez orchestra at the time and who would also later play with Eddie Palmieri (who can forget his high flying notes on EP's "Puerto Rico"?) -- many more are featured in this album. Incidently, the date offers Cachao with different orchestras -- Tito Rodriguez among them.
This is a classic date for any interested in unadorned, raw, yet sublimely beautiful Latino/a music. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
More please!.......2005-01-06
This is the 2nd volume of Frank Hewitt discs from Smalls Records. Take a look at my review of the first (_We Loved You_) for some of the background & a thumbnail of Hewitt's piano playing. In brief: Hewitt was a highly original bebop pianist who was something of an underground legend in New York but never got the chance to release a record during his lifetime. (The only exception was his very brief appearance on _Live at Smalls_, an Impulse compilation which more or less sidelined him.) Since his death Luke Kaven of Smalls Records has been busy trying to secure him posthumous fame by finally releasing the few sessions that Hewitt recorded in his lifetime.
_Not Afraid to Live_ is Hewitt's last session, though he still sounds just fine on it despite the short time remaining to him. The bassist is his usual bassist Ari Roland, while the drummer is the great Louis Hayes, who had not worked with him before. The session is a considerable contrast to _We Loved You_: the repertoire has more of a boppish slant--"Manteca" & "Night in Tunisia" turn up in the setlist--& the tempos are mostly up, sometimes _very_ up. The session has its rough edges: Hayes seems intrigued but not quite on Hewitt's wavelength, & it's pretty obvious that Hewitt simply launched into the tunes without much advance discussion or arrangement. So, for instance, on "Just One of Those Things", he starts with a slow, rhapsodic unaccompanied opening, then shifts into a ferociously fast gear for the head--but Hayes doesn't follow suit, coming in on brushes at a more moderate tempo, so there's a little negotiation before the players lock in & just blow (it's actually a terrific performance despite the rough spot). On "What's New" Hayes seems bemused that Roland insists on playing in two the whole time, & at several points tries to nudge things into doubletime or a brisker walk, but no-one takes him up on it. These are all things that could have been cleared up by an extra take or two but I assume this isn't what happened in the studio.
So it takes a couple listens to get past the occasionally glitchy surface of the music. If you do that, though, you'll find this just as fascinating a window on Hewitt's music as the first CD. The prize plums here are a tremendous "I'll Remember April" (quite fast--nothing like the version on the first CD), "Just One of Those Things", & an especially fierce "Manteca". Hewitt's playing is almost alarmingly double-or-nothing--even on a fast tune he favours doubletime runs--& it's about as far away from the smooth virtuosity of much mainstream jazz piano as you can get..... but despite the fratured surface he's always on top of things--walk-in-the-park relaxed & in the pocket. It's a very personal wrong-right style of playing: even the familiar themes of the bebop tunes get reworked with pointed off-notes & strange harmonies.
I'd still suggest that listeners unacquainted with Hewitt go to _We Loved You_ first: it's a little ballad-heavy, but the band is completely sympatico with him there. But if you like that one, then needless to say you'll want more. I gather there's still more Hewitt in the can, including a live gig--I hope it's not long before these see the light of day.

Hall of Fame.......2007-07-03
"Legendary voices" and "More legendary voices" are excellent compilations (accompanied with two highly reccomended books by Nigel Douglas) of 78 rpm. recordings done 1911-1949.Althought this comes as sequel, there is nothing secondary about these artists, they simply didnt make it on volume one because of limited space (I guess it would make perfect double disc?).
These compilations also serve as a reminder where todays classical singers came from, how post WW" singing changed as compared to previous generations and perhaps also, how fleeting and disposable fame is - like some old family portraits, most of the people (except Callas and Ferrier) are not well known today and that is why we have to be grateful to "Nimbus Prima Voce" company to keep the tradition & carry the torch into new century.Personally,I found "Prima Voce" CDs always irresistible and so far have collected 14 of them, more on the way.Richard Tauber,John Mc Cormack and Beniamino Gigli are wonderful.Reccomended!

Customer Reviews:
AN EXCITING LIVE!.......2001-02-07
THEY PLAYED IN SPAIN THREE YEARS AGO. I ENJOYED A LOT BECAUSE THEIR SON ARE PLENTY OF ENERGY, ROCK AND ROLL WITH VERY GOOD VOICES. THEY ARE ONE OF THE BEST GROUPS IN MY OPINION. I BOUGHT THE FIRST DISCO AND NOW I AM TRYING TO GET THE REST. THEY ARE FANTASTIC. I WOULD LIKE THEY COME BACK AGAIN, SPECIALLY MY CITY: LA RIOJA, WHERE THE BEST WINE IN THE WORLD IS MADE.
Great Debut CD lots of fun and refreshing music........1999-08-13
Teenage Frames has a lot of potential. Their Music doesn't beat you up with repetition. They get into a song and get out before they would ever bore you with the same thought over and over and over again.
Great band to see live!
great record! full of energy and unpretentious pop-punk..........1999-08-06
Songs like "Lemon Drop" will catch you by suprise with their catchy hooks and punk rock edge...A must have record...
