Amazon.com essential recording
Including both his band work (with the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonnie, and Derek and the Dominos) and his long, varied solo career, this four-CD set does a spectacular job in gathering several decades' worth of Clapton's best. There are the requisite classics--"Layla," "Blues Power," "After Midnight," "Further On Up the Road," "Crossroads," and "I Shot the Sheriff," among many others--some of them in previously unreleased live or alternate studio recordings. Released in 1988, when only superstars were granted the box set, Crossroads became the blueprint for what such a retrospective should be. For its scope, this box skims the cream of Clapton's large output. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
Terrific overview up to 1988 of Slowhand's career.......2007-03-17
Although this set doesn't go past 1988 (the year it was released),"Crossroads" includes some of Clapton's best material with the various bands he was a member of (The Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos) and solo. While some of these previously unreleased and rare tracks have since shown up on some other reissues, this is the only place (to date) to find early versions of "Tell the Truth", "Roll It Over" (both produced by Phil Spector and one track featuring George Harrison & Dave Mason on guitar. These were produced during the "All Things Must Pass" sessions)and the tracks from the unfinished second Dominos album.
The sound quality on this set is quite good. The masters aren't as compressed (if at all) compared to the reissues of Clapton's back catalog. As a result the CD doesn't sound quite as "loud" (much of that volume on the remasters is due to the dynamic range being squashed and the masters EQ'd taking much of the musical "punch" out of the music) as the Clapton remasters. Detail is very good on most of these tracks and although with some restoration on the Yardbirds tracks at the beginning because of the fragile nature of the masters they were pulled from. Overall, Bill Levenson and his team did a terrific job here.
This is a terrific set with a nice mix of live material, songs that Clapton performed on ("Comin' Home") and recorded as a solo artist. While his guitar didn't blaze quite as hard on the studio recordings for many ofhis solo recordings, this was a phase in Clapton's development where he was developing and focusing on his singing as much (if not more)than focusing on his guitar playing. That's not to say that he doesn't play well, it just sounds different than his hot, crazed playing for Cream and the tortured blues solos as a member of Derek and the Dominos.
The booklet has notes by Rolling Stone writer Anthony DeCurtis (interesting note--Clapton was so devasted by a critical Rolling Stone article about Cream that it helped convince him to break up the band. The article was completely out of line but managed to push Clapton into something that would have happened eventually given the volatile nature of the egos in Cream). Although this remaster is nearly 20 years old, it still sounds extremely good. Unlike many remasters, this was remastered pretty flat without all the compression and goosing that many remasters feature that make things louder but worsen the sound quality.
Nothing to complain about here.......2006-05-16
I am a casual Clapton fan; more fond of his adventures into Blues than his more popular material, but I'd be hard pressed to complain about this one. Spanning his career from The Yardbirds to his 80's solo material, there is definitely something here for everyone and it's easy to appreciate the legend that Clapton has become when you look at the scope and breadth of his work. Box sets are a nice way to get a true picture of an artist and one with as many side projects as Clapton it becomes a neccessity if you want to get a true picture of the man's talent.
A worthy collection of his material for any fan of rock.
EC's box of goodies.......2006-02-21
Wonderful set. A must own for any Eric Clapton fan (old or new). Covers most of his career up until 1987 including stints with the Yardbirds, John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delany and Bonnie, Derek and The Dominos plus his solo gems. 'The Core' (from Slowhand) is not included for some strange reason but perfection in compilations is seldom accomplished anyway. 5 stars nonetheless.
Travelling through Clapton's periods.......2005-07-28
This collection is the best box set i have ever found and it has all of Clapton's best works.
GREAT MATERIAL.......2005-05-16
I happen to be someone who loves boxed sets, and I have a number of them: (Led Zeppelin (BOTH), George Strait, The Who. ELO, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, George Jones, Billy Joel, Selena, Johnny Cash, and Merle Haggard to name a few). I decided to purchase this set, because I like some of Clapton's material, and to be honest, I am not familiar with a lot of his music (Maybe 15-20 songs), and would like to hear some more (And you always find new songs you will like). I always hear complaints that you should buy the original CDs, but to be honest, people cannot afford to be completists of every singer and (Or) group they like (I am a Strait and Zeppelin completist, and even that is expensive). This is a great box, because you can hear the hits (Layla, White Room, Let It Rain etc), and become introduced to more material, and appreciate Clapton even more. Simply put, this is great material.

emancipation.......2007-05-13
This is an excellent CD. I have all of Tracy Chapman's music on old tapes and now I have them in a digital format. This particular album's songs seem to focus on freedom from oppressive situation of various natures. Very inspirational and soul inspiring!
Tracy is a Genius.......2006-01-28
I have loved Tracy since she debuted Fast Car back in high school and I love her more and more as the years go by. She never stops making excellent music that inspires and touches the soul....this CD in particular is a real winner. I actually consider it a blessing that she is not on the radio where her music would become mundane and ordinary. Instead it's only by hearing about her through others that people have the privilege of listening to her wonderful music where you just can't get enough and it just makes you feel good. She's the best and there's no one else out there like her. That's a good thing!
Dam, she is Good!.......2005-05-05
oh Tracy, you bless my soul. I have all of her CDs and love them all. this one is an early one, and she gets even better, but, if you are a fan, you must have them ALL. buy it, love it, you will like her music, if not, something wrong with you! (kidding) it's good though, ok.
Great Cd~!.......2005-02-18
I am totally a new devotee to Tracy... Other than 'Fast Car' and 'Give me one good Reason', I had never heard any other music of hers. I have to agree with the last review and say that it is a darn shame that some of her other work has not been as noticed. Oh well....the ones of us who are willing to give good music a chance have some of the best music around to listen to with her. Crossroads is an awesome buy ~~Highly Recommended~~
Tape bin.......2004-10-29
Accepting this great album into my collection would have not been possible if I did not search through the $2.99 tape bin at the local record shop. As soon as I played the tape I was in love. I was moved by the first 5 hits and two days later I bought the CD. I think the greatest part of listening to a new song is the feeling as if you heard the songs a hundred times. This album made those feelings possible.
I advise people if they own Tracy "Trapmans" debut they must add "Crossroads" to their collection. I am not a musician but know great music when I hear it.

Customer Reviews:
Crossroads.......2007-01-09
The music is much better than the acting in this film. Ry Cooder's production of classic blues tunes remains one of my favorites today. The Karate Kid steps up to the plate but his performance is mediocore yet saleable. A great story, looking for Robert Johnson's lost tracks, a rendeveouz with the devil, a young love affair and a quest for redempetion make this film very likeable. It is, however, the music that sets it apart. If you are a fan of R. Johnson a lover of the blues then it's a must see/listen.
No Crossroads Duel, No Problem.......2006-02-04
I see that most of the reviewers for this record are disappointed that the Cooder-Vai duel didn't appear on the soundtrack album. That's understandable. But for me, that was better experienced as video. Personally I think the high point of the soundtrack, and the movie for that matter, was the electric guitar bottleneck piece "Feelin' Bad Blues". It is fantastic. It sounds like the guitar may be accompanied by a hammer dulcimer toward the end. I played this for a young guy I work with who is a heavy metal fan and is just discovering the blues. He got wide-eyed.
I just wanted to correct a post I read earlier..........2005-03-22
All of the best cuts from this movie are actually located on Steve Vai's CD entitled "The Elusive Light and Sound". It is a very excellent CD, and has over 40 tracks on it. Thats all, Thanks.
Good Soundtrack.......2004-11-11
Good sountrack, and while I think that the idea was to lean towards blues on this release, some of the best music from the movie isn't on this release. To get that you need the movie DVD, and though I have no complaints in seeing the movie to get hear these tracks, it would have been nice to have them included on the soundtrack.
Ah, the wonders of marketing!.......2004-06-25
Just wait until August, and buy the DVD. The 'soundtrack' only has just over 30 minutes of music on it, and omits some of the good stuff! If you simply MUST HAVE it, by all means, go ahead. As for me, I'm using my copy for a coaster right this minute.

big clapton fan.......2007-02-03
Clapton is one of the best guitar players. This has allot of extended versions of his hits and for a Clapton fan I do not see how you could not get this. A big problem for me that gets worse every time I listen ( I was hoping I could eventual ignore it and just listen to Clapton) is the rhythm section. This has got to be the worse drumming ever put on record, and it is mastered in a way that it is impossible to ignore. It's like water torture. (Also the price is 60 dollars?)
Eric's Best Band.......2006-03-03
Being a long time Clapton fan, I can say with subjective certainty that the Tusla backup band, as heard on this retrospective, was the best that ever stood behind the man. In many cases, he stands in the background while the rhythym section just cooks- "Little Wing" and "Badge" serving as notable examples. Terry is superb both as a rhythym and lead guitarist...never again, not with Albert Lee, not even with Mark Knopfler, would the interplay be THIS smooth, THIS breathtaking, THIS raw. Oldaker is reminiscent of Levon Helm or Gene Parsons, and leads that band charging through numbers with his perfect touch. Dick Sims, on organ, sounds incredible, with his playing hovering between the background and foreground, much like Clarence White's guitar playing in the Byrds. It's there, and it's perfect in every case. Same for Radle- by this time, Radle had been Eric's longest standing bassist and knew Clapton's habbits. Listen to how spotlessly he counters them. And Elliman and Levy provide perfect harmony.
In sum, Eric's best band and Eric's rawest and BEST playing. Never again would he reach these heights. Ever.

If you really love EC.......2005-07-10
This collection shows Eric at his best and his worst. These were days fueled by a lot of alcohol...and on some songs it shows. But for the most part this is a great collection of some of his live work in that era. Some of the jams are wonderful, "Badge" and "Eyesight." He's simply magic with the guitar. However, some, like "Crossroads," sound like he doesn't know which of the twelve blues bars he's supposed to be singing in (that was an unintentional pun.) Juxtapose this with "24 Nights" - this collection is a gritty, loose sound, while the latter is more of a clean, polished performance (that was an intentional pun). I love EC and hope he continues to release his live vault...no matter which of his phases it come from.
Eric at his best.......2005-06-22
Someone once told me that Eric is best listened to live and this set proves the point!
Of course there are a few dodgy tracks and yes, I agree, there should have been other tracks added and others omitted.
But!
This is the master at his best, it doesn't get any better than this.
Favourite tracks, too hard to say which are my favourites but there is some wonderful guitar playing on all tracks.
I have been an Eric fan since the Yardbirds and this CD set takes pride of place in my collection

Kayhan Kalhor is the world's leading exponent of the kamancheh, an upright spike fiddle. Renowned for his work with Ghazal, a group that bridges Indian and Persian music, he applies a similar approach to Iranian folk and classical forms on Night Silence Desert. The Radif (Persian classical repertoire) grew from folk forms, but over the centuries the music evolved from its simple rural origins into an elaborately ornamented and rigorously structured style. This album doesn't take the music back to its basics--there's too much refined virtuosity on display. But the musicians infuse their playing with a vigor and crisp cohesion that belies the record's fitful production. First Kalhor convened 11 strummers, drummers, and flute blowers in Tehran in 1994 to lay down the sweeping instrumental passages. Four years later he and vocalist Shajarian finished the record in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The two men exchange intricate call-and-response melodies that radiate impassioned exhilaration. --Bill Meyer
Customer Reviews:
Wow! A super recording........2005-05-26
Other reviews say all needed to know. This is a incredible cd if you really love music.
Kayhan's best?.......2004-12-16
With this beautiful album, Kayhan Kalhor hoped to bring more of a traditional (rather than solely art-music) musical slant into the art music of Iran. As he states in the liner notes (and rightly so), it's not folk music, as folk music is the music by and for the people... the people who work and sing all day, and play at night. This is a concept that is the same in the USA. There is "folk music" as a genre... populated by the Kingston Trio and Joan Baez, etc... and then there is the real folk music... music played by people who broke their backs at work on railroad tracks, in coal mines, in prisons, etc... That is the heart of folk music no matter where you are in the world. Spiritual subsistence music. Kayhan wanted to bring some of that spirit and some of that melodic feel back into Iranian classical styles. He was successful.
A huge part of this success is of course due to Mohammad Reza Shajarian. His style and degree of vocal control maybe unmatched (At least in terms of men. Oftentimes I greatly prefer women singers over their male counterparts) by all but a few other men on the whole planet.
Kayhan really is the spark behind all of this, though. Mohammad is the voice, but Kahyan is the reason this exists at all. His kamancheh playing is, as usual, gorgeous... and you also get a larger glimpse into his setar playing than is usual, at least by the standards of his other discs that I own. Although if i remember correctly, my favorite instance of his setar playing is on the Yo-Yo Ma Silk Road disc. I need to pop that one in again. It's been a while.
This isn't his most well-recorded disc... it's certainly not at the level of the 2 Ghazal albums I have, or Scattering Stars Like Dust, but I think the quality of the performance makes up for it.
BEAUTIFUL AND TRANSPORTING..........2004-05-16
NIGHT SILENCE DESERT is described in the notes to this CD as a `Khorasan suite' - Khorasan, Iran's largest province, located in the eastern part of the country and home to Masshad, the nation's holiest city, can be roughly translated as `the place where the sun rises'. Kayhan Kalhor has composed the music on this disc based on the classical and folk musics of Khorasan, inspired by his love for the form. The notes that accompany the disc go into great detail concerning the differences and similarities between the classical and folk forms - but rather than writing like a cold theoretician, Kalhor's respect and passion for the music makes the explanation interesting reading.
Kalhor is a master performer on the kemancheh (the traditional bowed lute of the region, widely used in Arab and Middle Eastern music) and setar (a 4-stringed plucked lute) - he is joined here by an exceptionally talented ensemble featuring dotar (a 2-stringed lute), barbat (oud), santur (an instrument similar to the Western hammered dulcimer), nay (a reed flute), ghooshmeh (a double-reed flute), cello, and assorted percussion instruments. The ten tracks on the disc flow together wonderfully - sometimes so smoothly that the listener might not notice the track has changed until the subtle shifts in mood and melody become apparent.
The words sung in the four vocal sections are, like the music, a mixture of ancient and modern - two are by masters from the 11th and 13th century, and two are by contemporary poets. The ghazal form of lyrical expression is one of the most moving and beautiful to be found in the world - and while the pieces on this disc are not sung in English, there are translations provided. The emotions expressed in the poetry are given glorious flight by the voice of Shajarian, one of the most respected vocalists in Persian music today - listening to his performances here, it's easy to understand why he is so revered.
Far from being a `fusion' disc, the music here (at least to my untrained ears) remains true to the essence of Persian classical music. This album is a real treat.
Virtuosity, Perceivable Even by Novices.......2002-12-08
One need not be steeped in the traditions of Persian/Iranian music to perceive the beauty and mastery of the musicians and music on this CD. From my perspective, when one reaches a certain level of artistic excellent, it is foolhardy to split hairs over whether one is listening to a "good" recording rather than a "great" one. For me, this music--hauntingly evocative, spiritual, and luminous in its beautiful complexity--is of the highest order of artistry.
This is a recording one can listen to repeatedly, each time discovering new nuances and patterns missed before. Highly recommended.
Awsome!!.......2002-06-16
This CD has to rank among the "cream of the crop" of contemporary renditions of taditional Persian music. I own a large selection of them and this is one of my most favorite. The lyrics are based on poems by such luminaries as H.A. Sayeh, Attar, and Baba Taher. The song "Baran" is nostalgic, sad and mesmerising.... I have to stop whatever I'm doing and just sink into this song. Kalhor is a magnificent artist and kamanche player -- i've seen him live in concert. Shadjarian is unrivaled. The dotar by hadj ghorban soleimani is great but doesn't really stand out in this CD -- he and his music are authentic folk music of N. Khorassan (which province in Iran i'm from :) i recommend buying his own CD. The CD insert contains a detailed description of the various instruments, all poems in the original Farsi as well as English translations. All in all a magnificent production and masterly composition from the poems to the vocals to the music. This is truely a gem of craftsmanship and artistary and i'm proud to be able to recomment it. :)
This is the CD that moved Simin Behbahani, Iran's preeminent living poetess, to utter "My heart was beating fast with every note of the tar and my throat was choking up." [p.13 in "Kojast Fekre Hakimi?", Ketab Corp, LA, 2003]

Excellent Celtic Fusion Sampler.......2006-04-05
I agree with the last reviewer in that this is an excellent CD if one likes Celtic/modern fusion, as I do. This is one of those CDs that takes you to another place and makes you feel relaxed and good. It blends modern and traditional elements in a very complementary way. There are a variety of different types of Celtic music represented so it never gets monotonous and yet it all blends together very well. It's one of Putumayo's best compilations, in my opinion.
Awesome selection of today's Celtic artists and their music.......2006-02-12
If Tarre was hoping for your old school, toe-tapping, do a little jig type Celtic music, that's probably why he/she was disappointed.
On the contrary, Celtic Crossroads is a beautiful blend of your current Celtic artists and their ability to take the "old flare" and blend it into a new sound.
One can't help but sing along with the lyrical pieces or find your heart wanting to dance along with the upbeat instrumentals.
This is an awesome collection and a great addition to my Celtic music library.
Disappointing offering from Putumayo.......2006-01-30
I have both Women of the World:Celtic I and II discs from Putumayo which are really enjoyable and a delight to listen to again and again. On Putumayo reputation and the word "Celtic" in the title, I bought this album without listening to a single track. Bad move, outside of the nice cover and liner this album is a huge disappointment. Listen to the sample tracks and see if you don't agree.

Every song a hit!!!.......2007-02-08
This...is the best CD since Mary, Mary! I have enjoyed every song. His music is one of a kind! I especially enjoyed God Didn't Give Up On Me & Happy. Dietrick went into every area of sound, from old time religion to calypso! A friend of mine, with cancer, listens to this CD on the way to her treatments. I gave her the CD for a christmas present! You've made 2 people in Indianapolis happy! His previous CD "Lost & Found" doesn't compare! I hear there's a new CD out? I will definitely purchase it!

When I was going through my darkest days, minutes, hours, seconds in my life this man lyrics and music healed my soul and mind! His music is like vitmans for my soul. Also, the lord words. I thank God that I found his cd. His music along with other great gospel vocalist drew me closer to God.Because of Deitrick I buy more gospel music and pray all the time. Because of Deitrick, I feel very optimistic about my future. Most of all, I thank GOD!
ministers to the soul.......2006-01-06
This is one of Deitrick Haddon's best albums. The songs are amazing from beginning to end. "Its Over Now", God Didn't Give Up, You Have a friend, Stir the Gift, and Happy are songs that really encourage you to trust God and that things will work out. God is Good, U.N.I.T.Y, What Love, Crossroads, and Everytime are songs you can groove to. "Walls are Tumbling" and "Amen" usher in praise and worship. There was only 2 songs I really didn't care for, 7Ds and Prayer Changes Things. But overall this CD was off the hook. The songs were well put together and very enjoyable to listen to. This is a definate must have.
Gospel you can dance to.......2005-12-31

Janiva's best so far.......2005-10-01
I don't need 75+ words to say this is the best CD by a female blues singer I've heard in a long, long time. Whether she won a Handy Award or not, she deserves at least one, and soon!
Red Hot Smokin' Blues!.......2004-09-25
I've seen Janiva many times live, sometimes in small clubs and sometimes at Blues Festivals and she ALWAYS puts on a fantastic performance. If there is a better female blues belter out there I haven't heard her. This cd is a departure from her previous ones as this is a more stripped down sound. Her voice has never been better and I think this may be my favorite cd of hers. If you want to hear what a real blues singer sounds like buy any or all of her CDs and you won't be disappointed. Also, if you ever get an opportunity to catch a live show you'll be glad you did. By the way my favorite reviewer on Amazon is Avalondon, please send me an email.

killer blues album! caught me off guard! .......2007-01-29
Well I would know nothing of this man if it were not for the Saturday blues show in my town. they played a few cuts off of this, and I just had to buy it. Not only is Frankie one great singer, but the BASS player drives this cd like no blues cd i have ever heard.
Read my other reviews, I am so picky, I slam so much, for so much is lame. THIS is a stunning cd, every and I mean every song is good, how many times can you say that? Not just killer playing but all songs are good. I promise you will not be bummed off this. NO way
Turn it up as far as you can~!
