2 out of 5 stars Not terrible, but unspectacular.......2004-06-29

Randy Bachman's first jazz outing will probably satisfy fans of Diana Krall or Norah Jones, but should be avoided by most jazz aficionados. There's not much improvisation to speak of, and Bachman's vocals range from passable to unlistenable. Some of the tunes are actually quite nice (Our Leaves Are Green Again), but others fall into the usual trap encountered by jazz-dabblers of being songs about jazz rather than actual jazz (Breau's Place). Nice Johnny Cash cover, though (I Walk the Line).

4 out of 5 stars Bachman explores his jazz roots........2004-06-10

Randy Bachman always had an appreciation for jazz and it showed up in some of his compositions with the Rock bands he was a member of: The Guess Who (Undun, A Wednesday in your Garden) and with Bachman-Turner Overdrive (Lookin' Out For #1).

His interest in jazz is more than just in passing and you can hear how deeply Randy was influenced by one of his first teachers, jazz-great Lenny Breau.

Most of the tracks are originals and were written in the style of 40's & 50's jazz standards. The recording quality is first -rate as well as the musicianship.

By his own admission, Randy does not consider himself to be a strong vocalist, and the vocals are pretty laid back, but there is an appealing and honest quality to his voice that suits many of the songs. Think of Chet Baker singing and you will get the idea. I would like to hear Norah Jones, Bonnie Raitt, or Diana Krall cover some of these songs.

Standout tracks include Sentimental Fool, Breau's Place, and Our Leaves Are Green Again.

This is a pretty ambitious and honest first effort and one can hope that Randy will build on this and give us a Jazz Thing II.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent!!!!!.......2004-05-13

rb has really done a fantastic job on this cd, a labor of love for him.

as a rocker guy, i was not too sure if i could like this cd. "looking out for #1" from the "head on" lp many years ago never was a favorite tune. frankly, that is what i was expecting. i expected to hate it. but the guitar work here is excellent, as is the rythem section, and the vocals are nice and mellow, fit the music.

for a rocker like myself to find worth in this cd, should be a signal to any jazz buffs out there. this is a first rate cd. from the opening tune, to the last, a pleasureable introduction to another form of music by a very, very verstile, and under rated man, randy bachman.

shame on the usa record companies once again, for not releasing this in the usa. it goes to show why the industry is in the state it is in. if a rocker type of guy can enjoy this, than all you jazz buffs out there need to try it out.

    Album Description

2002 album finds the Canadian singer/songwriter collaborating with producer Wally Gagel (Folk Implosion, Eels, The Rolling Stones), long-time childhood friend Daniel Burns & Sheryl Crow/Oasis keyboard guru, Mike Rowe. On Asian Blue Gryner combines the pop sensibility of the 80's music she was raised on with the more stripped-down approach to recording she has come to favor to create an album of emotional highs & lows. From the biting but catchy 'Beautiful Things' to the lamenting 'Green Goodnight', Asian Blue is Emm Gryner at her best.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, once again.......2005-09-03

I got a sample tape of Emm's album "Public" years ago, when I was in jr high, and I thought she was excellent! I didnt find the album until 5 years later, and I was very pleased! So, I decided to treat myself and test some more of her music and I was REALLY impressed! Im glad I got the album, and I think anyone that likes to try new music, go for it! You wont regret it. This album has songs that each have their own sound, and yet you know it all blends together.

The first album on the track "Symphonic" was an excellent start to the album, it gets you into the groove. My favorite track would be "Divine" which, the way i see it, seems to be about being so enamored with someone that the only word to describe it is divine. "East Coast Angel" reminds me of a friend that I have lost touch with, that meant a lot to me, but we have seemed to lose each other through distance, and other people being in the way.

This album is AWESOME, and I HIGHLY recommend it. If I could, I would give it 10 stars.

5 out of 5 stars long time fan..........2004-03-21

Emm Gryner has been my favourite female artist for a long time now. 'Asianblue' is Emm's newest release filled with pop rock anthems. Though more pop driven then her other albums, it still gives off amazing energy and it still has classic Emm lyrics and piano. A great CD for the car or when you're hanging out outside in the backyard.

01 Symphonic : the album opens beautifully with this fast paced song

02 Beautiful Things : the single, amazing hook and melody

03 Northern Holiday : was my favourite song when I first got the album, still amazing though no longer my favourite song on the CD

04 Free : the lyrics hit home, a beautifully written song about wanting to be free

05 Young Rebel : this song has great lyrics

06 Siamese Star : a slower song but nonetheless a great song to listen to whatever your mood

07 Lonestar : one of my favourites, really catchy and a great tune

08 Christopher : very slow, amazing heartfelt lyrics and piano is superb

09 Divine Like You : it's got a different tune and I like it

10 East Coast Angel : my favourite song, I just love the melody and lyrics

11 Green Goodnight : slow, sad, beautiful. The true Emm.

If you want to listen to good music, buy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Record, Brilliant Singer!.......2003-12-12

Back in 1998 when she released 'Public' and had her only real radio hit 'Summerlong' she was starting to get a bit of attention. But when she got dropped from her record label and had to become an indie artist, exposure became more difficult. This is partly good as she has become a role model of sorts for aspiring indie artists, but at the same time it is a shame that she is not better known. She could have a level of fame similar to Tori Amos, not huge but certainly a known name.

Asian Blue is perhaps her strongest work to date(Public and Science Fair are pretty solid too) with a variety of sounds and musical styles incorporated into the record. Solid from start to finish, there isn't a bad track on the album. Asian Blue and Emm Gryner are true hidden gems in Canadian music. Go check out this album, you won't be disappointed. I would give it at least 4 stars, heck make it 5, this woman needs some exposure!

    5 out of 5 stars Asianblue.......2003-11-29

After 2001's stripped-down covers disc, Girl Versions, who would've guessed that Emm Gryner would return with the pop masterpiece that is her seventh album, Asianblue. Opening track, "Symphonic," begins with the song's primary piano line filtered to sound as if it were coming through an older radio almost as a nod to the simpler sound she's left behind. Veteran producer Wally Gagel (Eels, Folk Implosion, Rolling Stones) does a nice job in making the disc sound well crafted while staying away from the pitfalls of overproduction. "Free" is a time signature away from sounding at home on the clubfloor while "Young Rebel" begins with an ethnic slant that would make Shakira jealous. After all is said and done however the disc's closing track, "Green Goodnight," returns Emm to the simpler piano and vocals on which most of her fans became accustomed. Asianblue shows that radio-friendly pop can be made successfully on one's own terms without outside interference.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2003-09-24

Ok, she's from my hometown (but I left there 20 odd years ago).
This is one of the most amazing albums I own. 100% listenable (how many albums can you say that about!), unique and very well produced.
I discovered Emm when I was home for a week and she did some local show. I was highly impressed and immediately bought the CD (from her mom I think!). I don't have any other of her CDs.
Her voice is sweet and magical and the music is rich and varied.
    Buy this. Buy it now.

3 out of 5 stars Like nailing jello to a wall.......2005-03-01

I truly did not want to be critical of this collection -- as it contains many wonderful songs (with many personal memories attached for many Canadians aged 30 to 50 somethings. However, despite its attempt to group these songs by genre on each CD, for me, their still too diverse to hang together (i.e., be listenable). Perhaps I am just to attached to many of the songs separately... This set, is however, a very good introduction for appreciators of Canadian music, and people under 30...
    Cheers

PS. One more complaint. Did Celine's "Titanic Song" really have to be included here... jezzzzzzz! Holy smaltzy, Batman!

4 out of 5 stars The first volume was stronger.......2001-06-17

I'm not about to poop on the party and say this four-disc compilation of Canadian pop and rock isn't worth buying. That simply wouldn't be true. But I find myself playing the first Oh What A Feeling box set more than this package simply 'cause this one feels like the second tier of the Great White North's musical output...what wasn't quite remarkable enough to fit on volume one.

There are a couple of returning acts (The Guess Who with Share The Land, BTO with You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet, Neil Young with Heart Of Gold), but for the most part these are artists who didn't make it to vol. 1. among the highlights are Tal Bachman's instantly-hummable She's So High, Barney Bentall's heartland classic Something To Live For, Lee Aaron's Whatcha Do To My body and the Northern Pikes' rockin' party favourite She Ain't Pretty (She Just Looks That Way).

This package also tilts away from classic stuff towards more up-to-date things, like SoulDecision's Faded and Dream Warriors' My Definition Of A Bombastic Jazz Style. For that reason vol. 2 is of less interest to old white guys like me, but at the same time is more eclectic than the first compilation. If anything, that means it shows the world a truer picture of what Canadians are capable of doing musically.

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific collection.......2001-04-08

This is a 4 cd box set which features some of the best in Canadian artists. Almost every genre except classical is covered here. Disc 1 features artists of the 90's. It includes Shania Twain..."Man! I feel like a woman", Sarah McLachlan..."Building a Mystery", Alanis Morissette..."Thank U", and others like Celine Dion, The Moffats, Snow, Choclair, Len and Deborah Cox. Disc 2 features harder rock acts of the 70's, 80's and 90's. Bands like Loverboy..."The Kid is hot Tonite", Bryan Adams..."Summer of '69", The Tea Party..."Heaven Coming down", and others like Our Lady Peace, The Tragically Hip, Trooper and Lee Aaron. Disc 3 contains rock and pop, also from the 70's through 90's. Such as The Guess Who..."Share the Land", The Band..."Up on Cripple Creek", Anne Murray..."Danny's Song", and others from Platinum Blonde to Crash Test Dummies. Disc 4 is the most eclectic with a mix of folk, pop, Celtic and jazz. From Neil Young..."Heart of Gold", Diana Krall..."Peel me a grape", to Barenaked Ladies..."One week". This is a music lovers goldmine, and highly recommended. The first "Oh, What a Feeling" collection, was only on the market for 4 months. So get this while it's still available.

4 out of 5 stars Great Collection Of Canadian Music!.......2001-03-26

The first edition of this CD sold over two million copies in Canada and hopefully this one will be even more successful. This is a four CD collection of Juno Award winners/nominees from past and present. Even if you're not Canadian, try hard and get this CD since it won't be in print for much longer.

    3 out of 5 stars A More Mature HMS.......2006-03-02

Lemon Tongue was Honeymoon Suite's first album in over a decade, and it appears the band has grown up a bit during their absence. Like their countrymen in Harem Scarem, Honeymoon Suite's music has matured on later releases. The big hooks, prominent keyboards, and catchy choruses that were such a big part of the band's AOR sound in the 80's have taken a backseat to smarter lyrics, better songwriting, and a more melodic approach.

Does it work? If you're not expecting the band's classic sound, then yes. Lemon Tongue is a very enjoyable album, and some of the songs here are simply beautiful. They may even be comparable to latter-day Marillion in terms of beauty and emotion.

That being said, I think the band should have stuck a little closer to their classic sound. Lemon Tongue is more mature than Racing after Midnight, but it's also less fun to listen to. At times I forgot I was listening to a rock album at all. Even Amazon labels the band an "alternative rock" act. I'm not necessarily looking for the Big Prize Part II, but an approach that combines the best of the band's older and newer sounds (like what Harem Scarem is doing these days) would work better.

Ultimately, Lemon Tongue is worth checking out, as long as you can leave your expectations at the door. It's not going to make everyone happy, but I think it may pleasantly surprise people.

5 out of 5 stars This is What I Know.......2003-09-15

The music of Honeymoon Suite will move you. If you have a pulse and at least one functioning ear - you need this CD. Songs like "Gone" and "Lemon Tongue" throw an instant party for you, no matter what kind of day you've had. At the other end of the spectrum is a jewel like "Into Me, Into You" which is as beautiful and potent as watching a sunrise in Venice. These guys are true artists disguised as a rock band. The songs are honest and exposed without pretense. Honeymoon Suite has opened a vein and bled true emotion into this effort. Brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Lemon Tongue Rocks.......2002-02-15

This is Honeymoon Suite's first studio album in 10 years. It was well worth the wait. Derry and Johnnie have put together a great album and have an excellent band backing them. They are still performing shows and the shows are still awesome. All of the songs on "Lemon Tongue" are great, but there are a couple that are really good. "What I Know", "So Hard", and "Knew You When" are great. They are very high energy songs with good lyrics to match. Don't worry, they still have the great harmonies and choruses on the tracks "Undone" and "Into me Into You". You will definitely enjoy this album. ;)
