Editorial Reviews
Bob Bollins, American Roots Magazine
AMerican Boy is a painfully good song musically, lyrically and vocally.
Product Description
American Boy is a song written and performed by singer songwriter Ashton Jones. It is written in the "first person" of an American Soldier in Iraq, as he questions and expresses his emotions of the experience. It is both an an anthem to the true American spirit, it is an honor the heart of the American Soldier. It is hearfelt, powerful, and speaks for the people that give or risk there lives when their government requests their duties. American Boy is deidicated to all the lives lost in the Mideast and a one dollar donation is being made to "Headcount" a non partisan oer registration organization. Ashton hopes that "American Boy" helps create a voice for more understanding, peace and forgiveness, while reinforcing that the true American spirit is a caring and generous one.

The best of the series.......2007-06-22
The latest in the band's long-running series of official live releases taken straight from the sound board "warts and all." A truly stellar performance, those new to Moe will find much here to enjoy. Long-time Moe fans will love the set list--with a mind-blowing 27 minute version of Yodelittle, a Plane Crash that rocks your socks off, some wonderful though more seldomly performed songs, and early previews of tracks from the 2007 studio album "Conch." Highly recommended.

not the usual Moe.......2007-05-07
This CD is basic music, nothing special. The lyrics are normal and there are no long jam sessions.
moe. is on fire........2007-04-26
this is, quite simply, the best studio album moe. has ever put out. what pushes the conch past other studio efforts is the consistancy and excellence of the performances and the songs. there are simply no moments of weakness (moe. fans might remember overly frivolous tunes with unecessarily quirky lyrics that, while being certainly creative, might be difficult to take seriously and get behind emotionally) from albums past anywhere on the album, save for the 4 brief reprise/interludes scattered throughout the more fully-formed songs. this album shows moe. at the peak of their powers to date. and the excedingly high quality of their live shows during this time (i recently caught them in san diego and la in april, '07) provide a just and timely complement to the recent release of the album.
each song on the conch includes long and interesting solos and jams by chuck and al. and the jams are hard and heavy! this is when moe. is best, in my opinion - when they really turn up the volume and blast off, sonically. chuck and al's twin guitar attack steal the show on the conch, with, alternately, one guitarist crunching the power chords while the other guitarist plays guitar hero to compelling effect. i've always connected with chucks's playing in particular and the conch is an embarrassment of riches for us chuck fans. his phrasing and power on the conch are perfect.
i'm giving this album to all my music-loving fans who've either never heard of moe. or don't know too much about them. it's the perfect representation of a great rock band.
Another Winner from Moe........2007-04-18
It's been four years since Moe.'s last official "studio" effort, Wormwood. They have continued the process they started on that album, namely recording the main tracks live in concert and putting the best performances on the album. Then they go and add some slight studio enhancement as well as some short transitional pieces to make the songs fit together more smoothly. The technique worked brilliantly on Wormwood, which sounded like an amazing single live set from the band.
The Conch is largely successful using these same methods. Moe.'s biggest strength, songwriting, has always made them an anamoly among their jam-band brethren, but it tends to make for excellent albums. While this album runs a bit long at 17 tracks, there are numerous highlights throughout. The band wisely keeps things relatively short and sweet here, so there are no 8-minute plus jamming excursions to bog things down.
Things start off gently with the laid-back "Blue Jeans Pizza" and the southern rock ballad "Lost Along the Way." "Lost" does feature a ripping guitar solo, though, the first of many to come on the album. The title track is one of the aforementioned transitions, paving the way for the hard-rocking, Bush Administration-bashing "Tailspin."
Next up is the musically dark "The Pit." This is another rocker, with simple lyrics about going to Hell, but with more fiery guitar solos and a never-ending chorus featuring unusual harmony vocals. From here, the album wanders through the same range of genres the band usually tackles. "Another One Gone" is a sparse country-rock tune, while "Wind it Up" is jam-band style prog-rock, "She" is somewhat silly pop, and "The Road" is a speedy rocker about being on the road.
In the middle of the album, "Down Boy" is a particular highlight. Another song featuring unusual harmonies, it's brilliantly catchy and listenable. The album's closer, "Brittle End," is a song so slow it's practically crawling, but it manages to do a steady build of menace and crunching guitars to go along with the narrator's increasing lyrical desperation.
Although much of this album isn't anything really new for the band (although there's a lot more piano here than ever before), the strong songwriting and inventive guitar playing keep things afloat. Vocalists Rob Derhak, Al Schnier, and Chuck Garvey sound different enough from each other to keep things interesting, as well. One of the best albums of '07 so far, and the wealth of highlights may keep it on my list through year's end.
all fluff, to cute, no balls.......2007-04-14
I like these guys alot.I own a bunch of there stuff and love to see them live.I played this Cd a few times liked it at first, but it didn't grow on me at all liked I'd hoped. To cute for me,not spontaneous enough.I feel this cd will become just another dust collector in a short period of time. The band should just let it rip. That's what they do best. This Cd is to well thought out.A good jam band should think from the heart not from the head. That's why most phish Cds sucked so bad. Thank god my brother bought this instead of me.I bought live at cow palace (The Dead) great Cd.
A great representation of the band's evolving sound.......2007-04-08
moe. started off their career as a few college friends just looking to occupy their time by playing music at fraternity parties. The lyrical substance (or lack thereof) of some of their earlier work is evidence of this -- songs such as "Dr. Graffenberg" and "Long Island Girls Rule" from their early 90's repertoire seem as if they were penned by your drunken neighbor down the hall in the college dorms. However, even at this early stage, something clearly separated moe. from the pack of Def Leppard cover bands that call sloppy college bars their home -- an almost innate ability to improvise on their instruments, and a tight bond between the individual musicians that made their songs become more like musical conversations between the band members rather than 'its-my-turn-now' wankery. If you take this perspective when evaluating moe.'s catalog, you can clearly see the progression from this early stage, to their stint with Sony Music and mainstream rock of "No Doy" and "Tin Cans And Car Tires", to self-reflection and independence on "Dither" on "Wormwood".
The five members of moe. have grown up significantly in their 15 years of playing together, and most are now married with young children. The songs on "The Conch" reflect this growth both personally and musically. Songs about drinking and partying have been replaced by introspective ballads such as Chuck Garvey's strikingly beautiful "Where Does The Time Go?" and Al Schnier's "Lost Along The Way". That's not to say the boys have gone soft, though, and several songs on this album, such as "The Pit" and "Brittle End" give the listener a taste of the metal-arena-rock that moe.'s live shows feature more extensively. "Y Eaux Massa" gives the listener a slight idea of the crowd participation that is a hallmark of live moe. shows, and "Wind It Up" weaves multiple musical textures together in one of moe.'s strongest compositions to date. There's even political sentiment offered in "Tailspin", a song about how one can get lost in the media's 'spin' on current events.
moe. is a band best experienced live, and if there is one criticism of this album, it is that the songs perhaps lack a bit of studio 'polish' and sound more like cleaned up, concise versions of their live songs. Still, especially if you are new to moe., or rediscovering the band for the first time in a while, this album is highly recommended as a way to learn where they have evolved to at this point in their careers. Get this album, get a few of the "Warts and All" releases, and then go to a live show to truly experience this band!

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Perfect starter CD!.......2005-02-12
I'm surprised that no one has reviewed this CD yet. Released in conjuction with the Nationally-released PBS documentary "America's Choir" - this album is a perfect starting place for people who wish to have a sampler of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Serving as both a latter-day "greatest hits" and a stand alone album, this CD gathers six tracks from the Choir's recently released albums "Consider The Lilies," "Spirit Of America" and "Peace Like A River" and adds TEN brand new tracks recorded specially for this project, creating a perfect sampler of both the Choir's magnificent history and it's current sound. It highlights the strengths of the Choir's repetoire, from well-known hymns ("Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing") to patriotic standards ("Battle Hymn Of The Republic") to folk songs ("Shenandoah," "Bound For The Promised Land") and even some surprises, like the traditional Welsh anthem "O Home Beloved" and the "Fugue In C Major (Jig)" for organ and orchestra. A wonderful, wonderful CD, with startling changes in mood and tempo, but with the unifying artistry of the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Sqare.

Amazon.com essential recording
Originally recorded in 1989, Phish's second record is a brilliant blend of whimsy and wisdom that served notice to the world: these boys are tough to peg. "The Squirming Coil" is arena-rock bluster, "Reba" is winding art rock, "My Sweet One" is quick bluegrass, "Split Open and Melt" is a funky workout, "Oh Kee Pa Ceremony" is jazzed-up country boogie, "Lawn Boy" is lounge jazz, and "Bouncing Around the Room" is irresistible pop. Add to that "Run Like an Antelope," one of their most successful twisting-and-turning instrumental jams, and you have an eclectic yet digestible smorgasbord of styles. What saves Phish from crumbling under their own weight? A palpable sense of playfulness and sarcasm and musicianship that is both loose and demanding. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Joey Likes It.......2007-01-21
My friend Joey likes this album, especially the chorus to "Reba". And he likes Bathtub Gin, though he'd re-name it Bathtub Whiskey, if given the chance.
We went and saw them at TRAX in Charlottesville in `91, and Joey liked it. He was trippin' on shrooms, and had to go out to the car to get it together. I finally came out and talked him back into the show. We walked in and they were playing "Cracklin' Rosie" by Neil Diamond, and Joey felt better about things. He's from Jersey, Hungarian, and loves Neil Diamond. It's a Jersey/Hungarian thing. You wouldn't understand...
Anyhow, Joey is down with this. It's cool, since Trey is also from Jersey. You see what I'm sayin'?
Gentle Giant meets Frank Zappa and the Grateful Dead.......2006-12-02
Released in 1990, this was Phish's first "official" release. It was their first CD and their first on a major label. Their real first album was Junta, but it was only sold on cassettes at concerts at the time (it later got an expanded CD release). Lawn Boy is about 46 minutes long and the sound quality is very good.
It sounds a lot like what it is. The first major release by an up and coming band. It is a little looser than later releases, and the bands sound isn't quite set yet.
This CD features much more piano than later CD's will. It gives the whole album somewhat of a British Progressive Rock texture. Many of the openings to the songs sound like they could be from Gentle Giant.
There appears to be other influences mixed into the sound. Some of the guitar playing is reminiscent of Frank Zappa. And being a jam band, the seem to mix some Jerry Garica guitar style here and there.
This is a nice collection of songs, with a few exceptions. Phish was still playing most of these songs in concert up until they time they disbanded. You can't say that about most of Phish's albums, where only a few songs would make it to their concert play lists.
But, most of the songs do have the same problems that most of Phish's work, silly, or ridiculous lyrics. The lyrics sometimes are just something that the group can later jam off of.
There are some problems with the production values on some of the songs, especially with the vocals. It is gets really bad when the band tries to harmonize. Some songs are a little disjointed. On Reba, which is 12 minutes long, the first 4 minutes are just a waste, with bad vocals, disjointed music and some of the worst Phish lyrics of all time.
But, get rid of the first 4 minutes of Reba, and lose the two short tracks, My Sweet One and Oh Kee Pa Ceremony, and you have a pretty good CD with almost 40 minutes of nice music and singing.
The song Lawn Boy is a nice little bluesy number. I wonder why Phish couldn't have done more like this.
Phish shows the promise of what is to come.......2006-10-28
If there has been a band that has had the most success of being an "underground" band, it would have to be Phish This is a band that produces some of the most innovative music anywhere on the music scene.. Phish has long had the reputation of being a band with an "open audio taping" policy and as a result they built up a great following - especially as a live act. But their reputation as a live act goes well beyond the "open audio taping" policy - this band can completely back things up by putting on some of the most incredible live performances anywhere. As a result, many people consider Phish to be a stronger live act than a studio act. My feeling is that in order to become a powerful live act, the music performed has to come from somewhere. In this case, much of the music comes from Phish's outstanding library of music they released. One of the roots of this great live music is the studio album, "Lawn Boy". This was Phish's second album and for the most part sets up the foundation for a very successful career.
Phish is commonly called a "jam" band. In the live setting for many of their songs, Phish seems to follow a very simple formula. The songs have simple lyrics - most of the lyrics toward the beginning of the song. Many of their songs are then extended with some beautiful and intricate instrumental pieces - "or jam" pieces. These pieces can be long - including one 12 minute song ("Reba;. If you want to know why Phish isn't played on conventional radio - that is the reason). It's a shame because conventional radio's loss becomes the fans gain. What I like best about many of the long numbers is that it will often take you on a music journey to parts unknown. Phish also isn't afraid to do a short song - as there is a 1:41 track on this collection ("The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony"). Whatever the song length, it's important to know that Phish will grow on you. Some of the songs will catch on right away - other songs will slowly grow on you.
I wouldn't categorize "Lawn Boy" as their strongest Phish album. This album was still made early in their careers and definitely shows that the band was on the road to promise. Here is a track by track review:
"The Squirming Coil": This song is a Phish classic. It is 6:04 in length on this collection, but it is done much longer in live sets. However I think the length is perfect for this song on this album. Page McConnell's piano work sets the tone throughout this entire song. The great thing about this song is how the tempo evolves and changes.
"Reba": Another Phish classic. Phish seems to have fun doing this song. As mentioned above this is the longest track of the collection. The song opens with a folksy-like feel. The chorus of "Bag it; Tag it; Sell it to the butcher in the store" is extremely catchy. This is classic Phish because it follows the simple lyrics that lead into the intricate instrumental. I like the "reprise" at the end.
"My Sweet One": Bluegrass isn't really my cup of tea. This shows Phish explores different avenues and genres. While this wasn't my favorite song, this one hooks you.
"Split Open and Melt": This song is outstanding and proves why Phish is one of the most innovative bands. It has a Jazz feel throughout with a touch of psychedelica. While it is bassist Mike Gordon who is the star of this song, kudos must go to guest vocalist Christine Lynch - who does an outstanding job The horns used in this song also adds to the experience. The near a capella part about 2/3 of the way of the song provides the perfect "relief" before segueing into more vocals by Lynch.
"Oh Kee Pa Ceremony": As mentioned, this is the shortest song on the collection. It is also a pure instrumental feel to it. Not bad, but it also has the bluegrass/folksy feel to it - and this isn't where Phish is their strongest.
"Bathtub Gin": This song follows the classic formula of the simplistic lyrics followed by an intricate jam. I can't say this is as strong as other Phish songs cut in this mold, but it still isn't bad. Once again Page McConnell shines on the keyboards.
"Run Like An Antelope": This song deviates from the classic Phish formula. The instrumental kicks off this song. Trey Anastasio provides some outstanding guitar work throughout this song and once again McConnell gets kudos on keyboards. The two really seem to jam hard on this number. It is the instrumental where Phish really shines. It is over 8 minutes before the vocals kick in! This proves Phish doesn't "follow the script".
"Lawn Boy": This song was accused of being "boring", but I liked this. It combines a "supper club" type feel with some of the fun and simplistic lyrics that Phish is famous for. You can also hear the strongs of Anastasio's guitar.
"Bouncing Around the Room": Great song. This one isn't a jam song by Phish, but it is a "fun song". I'm surprised their record company didn't promote this - because this could have easily been a mainstream hit. Jon Fishman and Mike Gordon kick off this song on drums and bass very well - setting the "bouncing" tone for this song. The song slowly builds up as well. McConnell's keyboard also comes in at the right moments.
The liner notes included the lyrics as well as production and musician credits. While Phish definitely has had stronger albums top to bottom, this is still a very good album. This will definitely keep Phish fans satisfied, but I'd still recommend it for new Phish fans as well
PHiSH is amazing.......2006-01-03
Their second big time album, this album is near musical perfection to my ears.
It's definitely one of their more free-form albums, but I think that's a lot of the attraction to Phish anyway.
My favorite songs are "Reba", an odd song semi-reminiscent of "Esther" from Junta, "Split Open and Melt" which is a slightly ominous funk song (great bass part here, courtesy of one of the world's best bass players. People for a louder Mike!) that really shows their versatility in musical form. "The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony" is a country/jazz inspired melodic jam with a happy crowd laughing in the background. I believe it refers to sessions where the band would lock themselves in a room with a pan of special brownies and let the inspiration flow freely.
It got away...........2005-04-30
This was the first phish CD i bought, and the main reason for this was because I saw it had bouncing round the room on it, and i had heard the "live one" version of this and liked it. However, not only was the studio version not quite as good but i was uninterested in the other songs, especially the jams (Reba, Run like an antelope) because at this point i didn't fully appeciate long songs. Dissatisfied, i went to buy picture of nectar, billy breathes, and junta (in that order). Now, after becoming more of a "phan", I went back and listened to this CD that I had so long called "mediocre". No that I appeciate Phish and jammin more, I found that I love this CD now! I like pretty much all the songs. Here they are in order from best to worst (in my opinion):
1. Bathtub Gin
2. Reba
3. Run like an Antelope
4. The Squirming Coil
6. Bouncin Around the Room
7. My Sweet One
8. split open and melt
9. Lawn Boy
Even though there obviously has to be songs low on the chart, the only 2 that i don't really like are the last 2. Tracks 1-7 are all great. My sweet one is incredibly fun to spin around in circles to, and sometimes grab two pens and bang them against something to the rhythm of the song (or just bang them rhythmless). I can get myself so tired dancing around to Bathtub Gin. Every song (almost) is priceless. I highly recommend buying this CD, but if you're just trying to get into phish start with "a live one" or pictue of nectar.

not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

The Elders get better and better..........2007-03-02
This is a fantastic CD. The Elders are different than The Pogues, or Flogging Molly, but have a style that fans of those great bands will enjoy. Standouts include Bad Irish Boy, Send a Prayer, Racing the Tide, Gonna Take a Miracle, and Saint Brendan Had a Boat. One of my missions for the next year or two is to travel to see The Elders, since it doesn't look like they'll be in California in the near future. Check out earlier CD's as well, you can't go wrong.
Fantastic New Release from The Elders.......2007-02-17
Racing the Tide, the newest release from The Elders, shows off all the immaculate musicianship, strong songwriting and story telling skills of this Kansas City based Celtic rock band. Formed in 1998 The Elders have been rocking Kansas City and Celtic festivals across the country for the last 7 years. County Wicklow native Ian Byrne fronts the band, lead singer, bohdran and battle drum, with Steve Phillips, guitar (formerly of The Rainmakers), Brent Hoad on fiddle, Norm Dahlor on bass, Tommy Sutherland - drums, and relative newcomer to the band, Joe Miquelon on keys.
Foot tapping, sing-along beckons as the Cd opens with Send a Prayer. The band are well known for telling "true stories" at their live shows, and the first track is followed by some of these true stories... Uncle Charlie, Story of a Fish and Bad Little Irish Boy (could this bad little irish boy be Ian we wonder?). The title track Racing the Tide is my favourite cut on this CD, wonderful harmonies. Brent Hoad's incredible lyrics are showcased in Dear God, St Brendan Had a Boat (another true story if legends are to be believed). The track Australia is a departure from the majority of the Elders tunes, putting one in mind of a 1920's speakeasy. You'll rock out with Gonna Take a Miracle, and Right with the World.
I strongly encourage you to buy this CD.... and see The Elders live if you ever get the chance - you won't be sorry.
Excellent.......2007-02-12
The Elders are an excellent Celtic band. They have songs with energy and meaning along with fun. Ian is a great lead singer and the band has awesome harmony as well. Their songs DO stick in you head long after the last track. Well done...CHEERS!
Racing the Tide, by the Elders.......2007-02-12
A truly remarkable CD. The music is original and ranges from driving, up-tempo pieces that make the listener want to "crank it up" to a couple of tunes that slow things down just enough to help you get into the story that the song tells. Lyrics are creative and compelling. Some are just for fun, some tell important stories, and they stay in your head long after you turn the CD off. This is good stuff! D Schaal

There was nothing like the Robeson sound, ever. To describe his deep, rich, perfectly equalized instrument is futile. Go instead to "Balm in Gilead," the opening track, and see if you can listen to the last pianissimo phrase without falling to pieces. Robeson was at his best when the music was slow and the words contained spiritual or social messages. Faster, lighter fare like Kern's "I Still Suits Me" or Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So" find the serious-minded singer out of his element, lacking irony and swing. "Old Man River," though, gets a simple, dignified treatment. It's Songs of Free Men, though, that will just keep Robeson's artistry rolling along, especially in Sony's astonishing transfers. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Robeson on wax.......2007-06-19
I found this album in a thrift store last week, for a couple of dollars. It's the original pressing on four 78 RPM records, in a gatefold format. It's in pristine condition. I really bought it for the incredible cover art, although I hope to be able to listen to it in this format at some point.
The voice, the sound quality and the interpretation.......2004-09-24
Put this on your stereo and if it is good enough the depth and richness of Robeson's voice will make your fillings rattle and your chest rumble. The power of his voice is awesome. This CD is superbly recorded with no audible noise at normal listening levels.
A Voice from the 40s, often dated, often moving.......2002-09-01
"Red diaper babies" have greeted this disc with nostalgic joy, and it captures a time and an aesthetic and a political belief with precision. Anyone interested in the emotional life of the pro-Soviet left of the 1940s should buy this disc. It's something like Henry Wallace set to music. There is much more to Robeson than that, however, and Sony has given us Robeson whole: there are songs by American masters of the musical, there are labor songs, religious songs, as well as the kind of faux-folk songs which the butcher supreme Josef Stalin encouraged and which were not taken seriously inside the USSR (except at gunpoint!!) but which were taken up by dupes around the world. This is Robeson at his least savory - willing propagandist for a vile mass murderer. Songs such as "Native Land" (fittingly, Robeson is referring to the Soviet Union) and the Red Army song are the equivalent of the "Horst Wessel Song", anthems of murder, and it is difficult to listen to the worst of them without retching. On the other hand, Robeson's commitment to American folk culture was real. "Balm in Gilead" is deeply beautiful; "John Henry" is heroic; "By an' By" is both resigned yet hopeful. "Joe Hill" captures an era in labor history. Anyone interested in American popular song should hear these. Turning to Broadway, his "Old Man River" is very fine, though Robeson changed the lyrics for political reasons and Leonard Warren has done the song better. I disagree with the editorial reviewer: "I Still Suits Me" is wonderfully playful and shows Robeson using his gorgeously rich voice to tease and poke fun. However, Marc Blitzstein's "Purest Kind of a Guy" is beyond saving - another example of Robeson recording an unworthy song by a political fellow-traveller. Ugh. But for every miss there are two hits. Robeson performs Mendelssohn's Elijah with nobility, and sings his favorite song, "Water Boy", with joyous pride: "There ain't no hammer that's on these mountains that rings like mine, boys, that rings like mine."
No one need have any fears about the mono sound quality. The orchestra in the second half of the program is at times a little dwarfed by Robeson's voice, but it generally sounds clean and colorful, and the great artist's voice rings like no other.
Robeson at his best.......2000-05-12
It's hard to believe that most of these recordings pre-date the advent of magnetic tape: the CD transfer is superlative. The songs and performance are beyond reproach. Notable is the imaginative packaging in miniature 'record album' format, complete with the original cover art, and a replica of the original Columbia record label applied to the CD.
In response to a previous question: Robeson's performance of Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) can be found on the Vanguard LP entitled "Robeson" (VRS-9037).
some of the greatest songs of the last century.......2000-05-05
In the 1940s, before rabid McCarthyism and racism had taken its toll on him, Robeson made these wonderful recordings of spirituals, classics and pop tunes. Accompanied by the solo piano of the incomparable Lawrence Brown, or by an orchestra, the songs ring out with pride, dignity, skill and unmatched integrity. The shameful treatment that Robeson was subject to from American authorities certainly seem grotesquely absurd to a modern listener. The wonderful version of "The House I Live In" included on this cd should forever kill off any suspicion that Robeson did not love his country deeply. This album ought to be heard by millions of people, world wide. Robeson's voice is nothing less than a glorious high point in 20th century music, and it's hard to think of any recording capturing it to greater advantage.

Teenage junkie, basketball addict, and literary shooting star (he completed the justly revered Basketball Diaries when he was 16), Carroll transforms himself into a postpunk lead singer on his debut album. And a fairly successful transition it is. Crisp, rhythmic guitar lines set the stage for his tales of New York City lowlifes, junkies, and three rather salacious sisters. It's a bleak record and a hopeful one--a peculiar and peculiarly Catholic mix; at least, that's how Carroll accounts for it in the title track ("I'm a Catholic boy, redeemed through pain, not through joy)." The formula really comes together in the unforgettable "People Who Died," as Carroll salutes a litany of ODs, suicides, and other fatalities. If this isn't one of the '80s' greatest albums, it certainly has one of the decade's greatest songs. --Percy Keegan

Jim Carroll - Poet and Rocker.......2007-02-19
Nobody melds poetry and rock and roll better than on this album.
It's too bad in a way that most people only know "People Who Died" because the whole album is a stunner.
From start to finish, every song is a gem, with Carroll's disaffected vocals sharing the roar and rumble of a crackerjack rock band.
After releasing a classic such as this, it makes it all the more frustrating he couldn't follw it up.
The next album - "Dry Dreams" - has about two great cuts and that's it.
But do yourself a favor - if you like straight-up hard rock fronted by a NYC poet spewing gritty lyrics, this is for you.
I still play this 27 years later and it's just as fresh.
I totally agree with blahblah.......2007-01-26
SOLID 5 STARS
"One of the best Rock Albums of all time. He never got close again. For some strange reason the poet and the band just clicked on this one."
Exactly.
"I don't think any of them know why."
They couldn't do it again, that's for sure.
"Some of the best lyric poetry ever written"
At the same time sad, funny and scary. EVERY SONG.
"Very New York street city sound."
VERY New York. If you don't get New York you won't get this.
"Art at it's most honest level, no pretension."
Absolutely. Raw honesty. What Carroll does best. Brutal honesty.
"When the city drops into the night there's one moment of light, that's when everything seem clear, the other side, it seems so near."
Lyrics so good many have memorized into my brain. A straight ahead rock sound that somehow just fits the music perfectly.
Truly the best.......2007-01-06
This guy was sick. I enjoyed every minute of it. I first heard this album in the Navy in 1981 and remembered in my head for 25 years the song It's Too Late. I never noted who the artist was, however and was stranded with the memory of a great song that no longer was getting airplay. Fast forward...I had been searching for anything with Jim Carroll band for some time and finally...success. I get the CD's and of course Catholic Boy is the first I open. It is truly unique from beginning to end he barely sings, rather he talks with the music and it sounds great and what he has to say makes me more in tune to listen. The players are top notch as well. Why the hell do they not make more music like this and less of Creed.
Something like a Dancer.......2005-07-13
This is a very important, much-overlooked, fabulously rocking an poetic document of punk NYC at it's very best (did GG Allin ever record?)
I bought this when it first came out on vinyl as a college freshman (Pete Fornatale played People WHo Died during his 10-1 slot on the old WNEW) and have loved it ever since. I work out to it--I listen to it on the train--I write listening to it. I know Bryan Goluboff, who wrote the movie Basketball Diaries and I envy the fact that he got to know Jim (I didn't care for the movie, but I like the way BG plays basketball and he's a great dramatist). If you are a kid just coming up you have to get this and listen to City Drops (featuring Stones sax player Bobby Keyes) and I want the Angel...it'll blow yer mind.
An Underrated Classic.......2005-04-17
Jim Carroll delivers his finest work, out of three releases, here on Catholic Boy. Everything about this album is perfect: sharp songwriting, great lyrics, and playing that scorches. In a sense, Carroll has created an album that is direct, to the point and eloquenty captures the lives of the downtown NYC outsider; it's an album that Patti Smith should have recorded but didn't. Catholic Boy somehow is not mentioned in the pantheon of punk classics (due to the fact it was released in 79-80 not 1977)but it is deserving a greater merit.

Neither Circus nor Spectacular, but it is Karl King........2006-10-15
Having played a number of times under Karl King, I had great expectations for this CD. Alas, it was not to be. The music is there, the musicians play all the right notes and the conductor keeps time. The recording is only mediocre, of Laserlight quality, and the performance is not what I expected from what they call a "Circus Band." Indeed, the liner notes state that the band is mostly students and professionals from the Philadelphia area. In other words, a "pick up" band. And the conductor seems to have no circus experience only small town symphony experience (from the puffery in the liner notes). From listening, it would appear that he has never even heard a real circus band. Both conductor and band would not last a day at a real circus. I do have a suspicion, however, that the musicians would do better under a better conductor.
Now, if they called themselves a concert band, that would be accurate and fair, and would not have dashed my hopes, as they are OK as a concert band. But just OK.
Of course, a concert band can indeed generate all the excitement of a bona fide circus band, as Frederick Fennell so aptly demonstrated on his Mercury recordings.
Now, if you want real circus music played by a real circus band, get a Merle Evans recording.
However, having said all that, I will keep the album, as I have always been a Karl King fan, and it is fine music decently played by an OK concert band.
Great circus music.......2005-08-12
I needed some circus music to promote a fundraiser our Lion's club was having (a circus). I got the CD on time and it sounded great. I could not find this type of music anywhere else. Thanks.
Good music, mediocre playing.......2001-11-19
It was indeed exciting to find so many of Karl King's marches on one disc. The band's playing, however leaves a lot to be desired, as does the sound quality of the disc. The balance is poor, with a very annoying tenor sax playing loud and out-of-tune on every cut. Buy this if you are a march collector (which I am), but I do not recommend it for its entertainment value. Get the "Screamers" disc by Fennell and Eastman for a far superior set of circus marches with great playing and sound.
Review of Circus Spectacular.......2000-12-07
Certainly the best thing about this CD is that there are many of Karl King's marches that have probably never been recorded previously, which is curious, since some of them rank with his best. The curious thing about this CD, on the other hand, is that it is supposedly a circus album, but only a few marches were actually written for the "big top". This band is not the best I have heard - recommend listening with headphones, to get a much clearer, less muddled sound. King was only kind of a contemporary of Sousa, having lived 35-40 years later. He actually published more marches than Sousa, and generally wrote in a style that was "softer" than the March King. Sousa wrote mostly military-style marches (better than anyone else ever has, of course), whereas King wrote many military as well as circus marches, and marches in a simpler style, suitable for school bands.
Circus Spectacular.......2000-08-12
This recording of music by Karl King is absolutely splendid -it contains 28 tracks most of which I have certainly not heard before - I particularly liked the tempos of the marches - not too quick but just right - the band is good (although I had never heard of them) - I came across this recording by chance and I'm glad I did - highly recommended
