Album Description
No Longer Blue is the debut album on Two Good Reasons Records by Detroit/Ann Arbor americana mainstay Marianne Murphy. The ten songs, all written or co-written by Murphy, cover a wide spectrum of the genre with a touch of folk, blues, country and even pop sensibilities. Joined by her widely respected Cicle Of Friends, a collaboration of the premier midwest folk icons, including Neil Woodward (Michigan official troubadour), Gary Weisenburg, David Murphy, Barb Chiccelli and Native American songwriter-activist Robert Richmond (who also co-produced the album), Murphy's five-star vocal abilities have finally come face to face with top rate playing and support. The album includes the radio friendly "Irish Whiskey On The Side" a non-so-subtle tribute to her soulmate Jim Cerva, who himself makes several appearances on the album. Murphy, who has been likened to Allison Moorer, Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt by various reviewers, is all that and more. Quite simply, we never heard a voice so sweet and suspect you will feel the sameCustomer Reviews:
She sings with a graceful and catlike folkie twist.......2004-06-09
Marianne Murphy is a mother, teacher, artist, songwriter and singer of exceptional ability. Influenced by her Irish father's musicianship and character, she got into the blues, then Celtic roots music, folk and country. She performs traditional Celtic music as lead vocalist and guitarist with Brigit's Fire. From Detroit, Marianne Murphy released "No Longer Blue" (TGR77001) and claimed the honor of the best selling independently released female singer-songwriter album to come out of that area. On this promotional disc about the project, Murphy explains that "she wasn't so much blue as she was mad for years because she had worked hard and had been dealt some rotten cards." The song flowed out of her and came easily because she was happy. It's good to hear that she's not mad anymore. Already heard regularly on Americana radio, cuts are starting to get airtime on country radio and stations of other formats.
Marianne Murphy's "Radio Show" contains both album cuts and acoustic live performances of songs from the "No Longer Blue" album. Short commentaries (less than a minute each) from Marianne introduce each song. Many of her songs like the title cut and "Evelyn" draw heavily on folk sensibilities.
"Irish Whiskey on the Side" has a leisurely country beat, and Murphy says the song is an exact replica of her boyfriend ..."a patient guy, great sense of humor, always smiling, someone you can always count on, and down-to-earth." This promotional disc includes both electric and acoustic (without drums) renditions of the song. To achieve wide airplay, this should be of great use to dee-jays. "Empty Stage" is her tribute to Irish blues and rock guitarist Rory Gallagher who passed away in 1995. The future looks bright for Murphy, and this disc concludes with a new song "The Bridge," available only here in an acoustic rendition and which provides an optimistic outlook for togetherness.
This CD was distributed to all guests at the Marianne Murphy showcase in Nashville in April, 2004 and was mailed to hundreds of radio stations and media contacts throughout the country. Murphy sings with a straightforward earthiness that is a pleasure to hear in a world of too much over-arranged music today. She sings with a graceful and catlike folkie twist that is sweet and mellow. (Joe Ross)
